James Tonnies

James John Tonnies, age 87, of Verona, Missouri passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at his home.

He was born December 15, 1938 in Newport, Kentucky, the son of George and Lucille (Matz) Tonnies, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are his sons, David Tonnies and wife, Kimberly of New Castle, Pennsylvania and Brian Tonnies and wife Sharon of Farmington Hills, Michigan; sister, Carol Barth of Newport, Kentucky and two grandchildren, Carter and Chase.

James grew up and attended school in Newport, Kentucky graduating from Newport Catholic High School later attending Iowa State University where he attained a Ph.D. He was employed by a nuclear reactor manufacturing company as a nuclear physicist from where he retired. James had resided in Verona since December of 2011, coming from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He enjoyed farming his land, reading and his family. He was of the Catholic faith.

Private services will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.
