Bob Meeks

(From Ulmer Funeral Home)

Robert L. “Bob” Meeks, 84, passed away at his home in Carthage, Missouri, on Friday, August 26, 2022. Bob was born on August 16, 1938, in Ferriday, Louisiana to William Edgar Meeks and Grace Mae “Loucks” Meeks.

Bob attended Arkansas State University where he earned his Master’s degree in Music, and then spent the next several decades touching the lives of countless students as a music educator while also performing as a professional musician.

During his career Bob received numerous honors and awards, including being named “Outstanding Jazz Educator” by the Missouri Association of Jazz Educators, selected as a “Legend of Music Education” by Palen Music Center, and selected as “Best Teacher” multiple times through the years by his students.

After retirement, Bob became a member of the Patriot Guard where he rode over 500 missions. Bob was eventually selected to be the Missouri state Secretary-Treasurer. He felt a strong sense of duty and camaraderie with the Patriot Guard and felt honored to be able to show his respect to our fallen veterans.

Joanna Holmes

(From Bath-Naylor Funeral Home)

Joanna Lynn Holmes passed away to be with our Lord and Savior at 8:28AM on August 28, 2022 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.

She was born Joanna Lynn Lucas on January 10, 1961 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Margie Eichhorn and Larry Lucas. In a household of five children, Joanna was the middle child with two older brothers, who were her best friends growing up. Being so close in age and the only girl at the time, Joanna had to become "one of the boys," and would always brag that she could play football, hold her own with her brothers and was tougher than a lot of boys in the neighborhood.

A few years later, her baby sister Elaine joined the mix and she finally had a partner in crime against the boys. Spending most of her childhood in Pittsburg, the family moved to Clovis, New Mexico for a short period of time and that is when the last child, her baby brother Wayne arrived. Having previously been a tom boy, Joanna took to her little brother, looking after him almost like a second mom. She was a very devoted, kind and protective big sister.

Joanna attended Pittsburg schools including Washington Grade School, Lakeside Junior High, and Pittsburg High School where she participated in a variety of sports. She graduated High School in 1979.

Around this same time, she met a persistent young man who was head over heels in love with her; John Holmes. After many pleas, she accepted a date with him and the rest was history. They were married on June 15, 1984. They had three children between 1987 and 1990. After the birth of her third child, she decided to go back to school full time to pursue her goal of becoming a nurse.

Having three children under the age of five, she went to school full time, worked on the side as a cosmetologist to help support her family and graduated from Pittsburg State University's Nursing Program in 1995. As a nurse, she worked in all aspects of the profession, including the ER, Gen Surg, and even worked for a short period of time at the Student Health Center on Pitt State's Campus. Joanna took pride in being a nurse and was always admired by co-workers and all of her patients loved her, and she loved her patients; their well-being always came first. There is no greater example of this than when she was working at St. John's Hospital in 2011 when the notorious F5 tornado hit Joplin, MO.

Joanna was the nurse who advised the hospital to initiate Code Gray, which allowed all floors to take necessary measures to get the patients to a secure location prior to the tornado hitting the hospital. If it wasn't for her actions, many more patients could have been lost in that natural disaster that actually moved the gigantic hospital six inches off of its foundation.

Joanna adored her children, always taking pride in their athletic ability and traveled all over the country for their athletic tournaments. On September 16, 2015, her first and only grandchild was born to her eldest son and his wife, a baby girl named Presley. Over the past six years, Presley and her "Nana" developed a special relationship and loved to sit and watch videos of Elvis Presley performing live. It was one of their favorite hobbies and Presley always looked forward to spending time with her Nana. A lifelong animal lover, Joanna was always willing to give food and nurture animals that she found without a home, and was always willing to adopt animals that took a liking to her.

In March 2020, Joanna was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy, numerous chemo/radiation treatments all while still working full time as a nurse. Tragically, her husband John contracted COVID in late September 2021 and passed away from the disease on October 14, 2021. Losing her best friend was something Joanna struggled with and up until her death, still said she missed John every second of every day.

Joanna's cancer returned in the spring of this year, infecting her spine, pelvis and liver, but she refused to give up. She continued to fight up until the very end. Joanna will always be remembered as a kind and caring person, who adored her family, profession and of course all of her animals. She was always the first to speak up and defend those she loved, stood by her convictions and lived life her way.

A lifelong Catholic, she has been a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Pittsburg, Kansas her entire life.

She is survived by her three children, Brodie of Pittsburg, Keegan (Logan) of Pittsburg, Paige of Pittsburg; her granddaughter, Presley Holmes of Cherokee, KS; her parents, Margie Eichhorn of Pittsburg, KS, Larry (Virginia) Lucas of Weir, KS; her siblings, Clint Lucas of Pittsburg, KS, Bruce (Marsha) of Prospect, TN, Elaine (Matt) Price of Orlando, FL, and Wayne Lucas of Rogers, AR; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A parish rosary will be recited at 6 pm on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS. Family will receive friends following the rosary from 6:30 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 1 pm, burial will follow at Highland Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the S.E.K Humane Society and/or Memorial Masses to Our Lady of Lourdes in remembrance of Joanna Holmes.

Friends may drop off or mail memorials to the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, KS 66762.

Marilyn Smith

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Marilyn Gwen Smith, 80, of Neosho, Missouri passed away August 28, 2022 in her home.

Marilyn was born October 16, 1941 in Mankato, Minnesota to Fritz and Mabel (Kittleson) Schiebel.

Marilyn is survived by her two daughters Kristin Abbott and husband John of Palmyra, Missouri and Tracy Smith Clyburn and husband Brandon of St. Louis, Missouri; her sister Florence (Ron) Johnson of Canyon Lake, Texas; her four beloved grandchildren Peyton and McKenna Abbott and Mason and Ainsley Clyburn; and several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn attended Mankato High school and went on to receive a secretarial certificate. Her early career in office work led her to work for a travel agency which afforded her trips to the Bahamas, Mexico and eventually Hawaii where she lived for a short while. Later, she began a life-long passion of breeding dogs.

Marilyn was an animal lover and always had a related story to share. Her daughters and grandchildren relished hearing these stories like the childhood pet duck she walked on a leash to swim in the creek or the backyard squirrel that made her laugh when he couldn’t climb the greased bird feeder pole. She was a nature lover that saw beauty in her backyard flowers or a wind-swept wheat field that she said reminded her of ocean waves.

Marilyn was a highly independent, capable woman even in her sunset years, which served as an excellent example for her growing daughters. She was a clever, resourceful problem solver. When her riding mower once needed a new battery, rather than pay to have it hauled in for repair, she borrowed a book from the library and changed it herself, fully impressing her pre-teen daughter.

She had a great sense of humor and appreciated funny stories about family pets or grandchildren and saved the letters and notes about the stories so she could reflect back and laugh. Those who loved her will miss her hearty laugh.

According to her wishes, no services are planned. Cremation is under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho. For those that would like to honor her memory, consider donating to a wildlife rescue center or trusted pet adoption agency or simply take in nature’s beauty and think of Marilyn.

Phyllis Lewis

(From Clark Funeral Home)

She loved us all so well, and we all were the better for her love. Phyllis Louise Lewis passed away on August 22, 2022, in her home in Neosho, MO, fiercely loved by family and friends both near and far.

Phyllis was born November 24, 1937, outside of Stella, Missouri, to parents Justin Owen Lewis Sr. and Grace Madeline (McNeill) Lewis. The eldest of 3 children, Phyllis was the one and only girl, often acting almost as a second mother and caring dearly for her two younger brothers, Justin Jr. and Robert. She attended primary school at Jay Bird in Neosho, MO, graduated from Neosho High School, and attended Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Education.

After graduation, Phyllis began what would be a long and successful career as a schoolteacher. She began teaching high school and transitioning to elementary until she eventually found her calling as a remedial reading educator; imbuing the experience of reading with possibility and joy to many who would not have had such an experience without her; that was part and parcel of who Phyllis was.

She lived and taught across the country in the early 60s, from Chicago, Illinois, to Long Beach, California, until coming back to the Ozarks in 1967, where she continued her teaching career in and around Neosho, including Stella and Anderson Elementary schools. She officially retired from teaching in July 1997 with special recognition from McDonald County School District for “31 years of exceptional and dedicated service”, but she also continued to teach part-time through 2003; for the love of it.

Family was held dear and a priority to Phyllis. She watched over her little brother J.O. (3 years her junior) throughout their childhood, and she was like a bit of a second mother to young Robert, born when she was nine years old. Both brothers looked up to their big sister with an admiration that lived on into their adult lives. She also tenderly cared for her parents, Justin and Grace, in their later years.

She had a passion for reading, history, and travel which she instilled in her nieces and nephews; taking them on road trips across the Ozarks, and Mid-west, including a trip to the site of the Battle of Pea Ridge that became a “must-do right of family passage.”

She became a bird lover and gardener in her retirement, turning the front and back yards of her sweet home on Walnut Street into a lush garden full of a plethora of Hosta’s and flowering vines that she tended to and enjoyed thoroughly. She also became quite the traveler in her later years, traveling with friends and family to destinations packed with history, including Boston, Nova Scotia, New York City, Seattle, Denver, and Chicago.

Phyllis was fiercely devoted to her family. She could always be relied on for a helping hand. She was tough and didn’t suffer shirkers; however, she believed that success was obtainable for anyone who worked for it. And she gave her heart freely and was generous to those who had earned her friendship and respect. Phyllis was dedicated to friends, church, and community. But Debbie's most rewarding and treasured job was raising her children and being Mema to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Debbie enjoyed traveling, often taking her foreign exchange students to notable sites of interest in the US while they visited or taking vacations with family. But she was most content at home, spending time outdoors taking care of her yard and her animals, or going to auctions and garage sales hunting for bargains and gifts for her friends and family. She loved people and was known to host her neighbors for gatherings of food, fun and fellowship.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Peter and her children, Michael Eck of Ozark, MO; Christina Rhymer (Jerry) of Salina, OK; Kandace Logan (Steve) of Miller, MO; and Troy Royko (Susan) of Fayetteville, North Carolina.
