Erma Coble

(From Parker Mortuary)

Erma Vivian (Haner) Coble passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at the Solace House of the Ozarks in Joplin, MO, following a sudden fight with aggressive cancer. She was 63 years young.

Erma was born on November 21, 1961, in Bartlesville, OK, to Emma Lee (Fencer) Haner and James Richard “Jim” Haner. She was the youngest of three children, her older brothers being Leonard James “Jimmy” Haner and Kenneth Ray “Kenny” Haner. Her early years were spent in Oronogo, MO, where she spent countless hours making long-lasting friendships and memories. She graduated from Webb City High School in 1980. That same year, she married Jeffrey Wayne Coble of Miami, OK, with whom she had two children, Tyler James Coble and Tristan LeeAnn (Coble) McNeill.

In 1993, Erma and her children returned to Webb City and the Joplin area, where she reestablished her presence in the community. She quickly became what seemed like everyone’s banker. She worked in the banking industry for 40 years, and though she loved it, she was eagerly looking forward to retirement at the end.

Throughout her life, Erma wore many hats. She was a mother to many beyond her own children. She was a sister to her closest friends. She was a leader, a mentor, a friend, and a confidant. But by far her favorite hat to wear she received on December 30, 2015, when her grandson Calvin James Freeman was born, making her a proud and loving “Erm-ma.”

Erma enjoyed many things in life. She liked to fish and reveled in all things “lake life.” She had a passion for mowing her own lawn. She threw a bowling ball like a pro. She had (an arguably extreme) interest in crime documentaries and docudramas. She took pleasure in planning events and hosting holiday parties. She was an active member of the Joplin Elks Lodge, and she participated in many local and state-level events with them over the years. She loved to laugh, and she had a biting wit that made others laugh, too (or set them straight, if needed). But most of all, she enjoyed doing or attending anything that gave her time to spend with friends and family.

Erma is preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Jim; her oldest brother, Jimmy; and her two dogs, Shelby “Monkey” Louise and Brian Bear.

She is survived by her son, Tyler, of Norman, OK; her daughter, Tristan (husband Derek), grandson, Calvin, and granddaughter, Austyn, of Webb City, MO; her brother, Kenny (wife Sue), of Tucson, AZ; several loving nieces and nephews; and a community of friends and extended family she always held in her heart. She loved many, she was loved by many, and she will be fondly missed.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel in Joplin, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Solace House in care of the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direct care of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, MO.

Jim Gilmartin

(From Konantz Warden Funeral Home)

James “Jim” Alan Gilmartin, 64, of Lamar, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2025. A lifelong resident of Lamar, Jim was born to Joseph and Betty (Loewe) Gilmartin and raised on the family farm that shaped his life and values.

He lived his entire life within a one-mile radius of that cherished land, a testament to his deep roots, steady heart, and unwavering commitment to home and heritage. In 2012, the Gilmartin family farm earned the distinction of being a Missouri Century Farm, a recognition Jim wore with pride.

A 1979 graduate of Liberal High School, Jim began his working years at O’Sullivan Industries, farming on the side but soon returned full-time to farming. Farming wasn’t just a job, it was a lifestyle, and a joy. The outdoors was his sanctuary where he dedicated many hours followed by his faithful dog Ellie Mae, who was the perfect farm dog. His cattle were more than livestock; they were pets. He had “the touch,” with livestock giving him a skill caring for them that few others could match.

On February 2, 1985, Jim married the love of his life, Karen Foster. Over the next 40 years, they built a life rich in love, laughter, and family. Together they raised four children and created a home. He was a strong believer in Christ and a member of the Nevada Church of Christ. Jim worked hard to show support for his family and their endeavors—even if it meant buying 35 boxes of Girl Scout cookies just to help a granddaughter hit her goal (and yes, he ate them too). Jim was a devoted husband, father, and granddad teaching grandkids how to drive the Gator, or simply riling up and then handing giggling grandchildren back to their parents.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Karen Gilmartin of Lamar, MO; his children April (Tim) Brown of Paola, KS; Austin (Alana) Gilmartin of Lamar, MO; Dylan (Abby) Gilmartin of Lamar, MO; and Krista (Zak) Banks of Halfway, MO; and his grandchildren Brynlee Brown, Adalynn Brown, Harper Gilmartin, Matthew Gilmartin, and Hudson Gilmartin. He is also survived by his sister Christine (Lester) Fast and his brother Kent Gilmartin of Liberal, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Betty Gilmartin, his sister, Caroline Wood, his mother and father in law Betty and Howard Foster, and his sister-in-law Carol Gilmartin.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of love, quiet strength, and a life well-lived in simple, meaningful ways. His hands were calloused from years of hard work, but his heart was soft when it came to the people and animals he loved. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him, but his spirit lives on in every sunrise over the pasture, every laugh of a grandchild, and every quiet moment on the land he called home.

If you would like to make a donation in lieu of flowers the family suggests Fair Haven Children’s Home in care of the funeral home.

The family will honor Jim’s wishes and have a simple graveside service where all are welcome to attend. It will be held at Barton City Cemetery at 10:00 am on Saturday June 7, 2025.

Shira Lawson

(From Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home)

February 18, 1945 — May 27, 2025

It is with full hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that our beloved Shira Lawson - devoted wife, cherished mother, treasured grandmother, and friend to so many - passed away from this earthly life on the evening of May 27, 2025,.

Born with a spark that only grew brighter over the years, Shira was the beloved wife and life partner of Pat Lawson. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, loyalty, and a love that stood the test of time. As a coach's wife, Shira was the ultimate supporter-on the sidelines, in the stands (not so quietly we might add), and most importantly, in spirit. Her presence was steady and strong, a true anchor in every season of life.

She was the proud and loving mother to Renate and Shan, raising them with the same fierce devotion and quiet strength that she brought to every role in her life. Later, she would become Grandma to Nicole and Travis, a title she wore like a crown. Whether it was a game, a match, or a student performance, if someone she loved was involved be it family or friend, you could count on Shira to be there, cheering from the crowd with unmistakable joy and pride.

Shira spent decades shaping young minds as a dedicated educator at Seneca High School. Teaching wasn't just her job - it was her ministry. Her students knew she cared, not just about the grades they earned, but about the lives they were living. And in turn, she earned the lifelong love of countless young people who she welcomed into her heart as "one of her own."

A true explorer at heart, Shira found joy in travel, particularly in the natural beauty of Colorado, where the mountains seemed to echo her adventurous spirit. She had a deep love for music and dancing, often found laughing among her many dance groups, reveling in the rhythm and camaraderie. Her camera was never far from her side, always ready to capture the fleeting beauty of a moment - a lake, a field of flowers, a grandchild's smile, all memory in the making.

Shira's life was one of devotion: to her family, her students, her friends she considered family, and her community. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the lessons she taught, and the memories we now hold dear. We will miss her presence -her laughter, her wisdom, her fierce hugs - but we are better for having known her. And we will carry her with us, always.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca, MO.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the Seneca United Methodist Church with Rev. Marilyn O'Brien officiating. Millie West

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

M“Millie” L. West, age 92, of Baxter Springs, KS, passed away peacefully at Freeman hospital on May 27th, 2025.

Millie was born on May 2nd, 1933 in Greenwood, MO to her parents Audie and Martha (Tash) McDonald. She later moved to Joplin, MO where she married her husband, Jerry West, on March 10th, 1951.

Millie had a zest for life; she had the amazing ability to draw the attention of every stranger she met. She loved to dance; there was not a person who was not subject to being her partner on the dance floor. Strangers at the beach, daughters, brothers-in-law, grandbabies and her favorite partner of all time, Jerry (the love of her life) were her partners of choice.

She believed strongly in getting dressed up in as much bling as possible even if she was just sitting at home in her chair. In recent years, very fancy-dress shirts, sweats and red dress shoes (bought by one of her grandkids) was the outfit she would pick every day. She loved watching baseball, old movies and Little House on the Prairie. If given the opportunity, she would have lived just like the Ingalls family, as long as she could bring her cell phone to play solitaire and have her Oreos, gummy bears, Reese’s and twinkies. She loved to laugh, and when she did, you might want to look closely because she had probably pulled some sort of prank. She loved her family and always looked forward to any time she could spend with them.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Audie and Martha McDonald; her husband, Jerry West; four siblings, Harvey McDonald, Harlan McDonald, Deanie Myers and Neville Driskill.

Millie is survived by three siblings, Jeanie Harsch and husband Gene, Shirley Cox and husband Virgil and Neal McDonald and wife Judy; two brothers-in-law, Don West and wife Marilyn, Gayle West and wife Patty; one sister-in-law, Garra Coffman; two daughters, Yvonne Davis and husband Jim, and Diana McCann; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held in her honor from 6:00-7:00pm on Friday, May 30th , 2025 at Mason- Woodard Mortuary, 3701 E 7th St, Joplin, MO 64801. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jim and Yvonne Davis for Memorial Arrangements.

Rueple Herrin

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Rueple Herrin was born January 24, 1927 in Neosho, Missouri to Walter Arthur Crews and Sarah Elizabeth Jefferson Crews. She lived independently in her own home in Neosho until 2023. She remained in the area until her health failed and she moved to Overland Park, Kansas on February 3, 2025 to be closer to her daughter. Rueple passed away on May 27, 2025 at the age of 98 years.

Rueple attended Meeks School, a one room schoolhouse in rural Newton County, Missouri for her elementary grades and graduated from Neosho High School.

Rueple married Charles Mottier Herrin Jr. in Bentonville, Arkansas on June 24, 1944. They were married for nearly 75 years and Rueple was devoted to caring for Charles the last few years of their marriage as his health declined.

They spent several years moving throughout the South as Charles worked on oil pipelines. Rueple enjoyed sharing how she could pack up their few belongings and set up house again in their new location in record time.

When they returned to Neosho, Rueple and Charles operated Herrin Grocery (situated in a half mess hall building that they bought from Camp Crowder) for about ten years. Rueple was never afraid of hard work and whether it was greeting customers at the counter, pumping gas or overhauling the motor on a meat cutter, she was up to the task.

When the store closed, Rueple devoted herself to her daughter, Labeta "Susie" Herrin, her husband and her beloved Oakwood Christian Church where she was a very "hands on" member for many years. She worked tirelessly alongside Charles assisting with church maintenance, construction and expansion. She was a wonderful homemaker, seamstress, plumber, electrician, roofer, etc. She was willing to do any type of hard work and loved staying busy. It is unclear who nicknamed her "Little Toughie" but, without question, she rightly earned it. Charles and she could often be seen on their his and hers riding mowers, well into their 80’s, mowing the lawn together. Charles had a shopful of power tools and Rueple knew how to operate all of them. She had a knack for coming up with creative ways to make broken things work again. She was a wonderful gardener and loved growing vegetables, especially to share with neighbors, or to can in order to help with the grocery bills and feed the family in the leaner months of winter. She grew the most gorgeous gladiolas in her flower gardens and enjoyed sewing beautiful clothes for her family.

Rueple was happiest when telling stories about her past and any one she met would soon learn about her life and her interesting past. She was very interested in native American history and avidly researched her family genealogy. Though she was never able to substantiate that she was part Native American, she always believed in her heart of hearts that it was so and carried it proudly.

She is survived by her daughter, Labeta "Susie" Herrin of Overland Park, Kansas (Andrea); two nieces: Beverlie Wilson (Jimmy) of Neosho and Glenda Livingston of Goodman, Missouri and Diane Marble (Neosho) and many nieces and nephews. Rueple is survived by a number of relatives of her late husband, including brother-in-law Doyle Herrin (Jeri), nieces Victoria Herrin, Christie Herrin, Stanley Herrin and Ann Galasi.

A debt of gratitude to cousins Anna Moore and Angela Duncan who were so helpful in providing caregiving guidance during difficult times, to Home Instead of Joplin who assisted Rueple to remain living independently in her home as long as possible, and to the compassionate caregivers of Garden Terrace of Overland Park and Good Shepherd Hospice who provided comfort and support to Rueple in her final days and weeks. Special mention and deepest thanks to Rueple's devoted caregiver Sandy Owen, who always went above and beyond to take care of all of Rueple's needs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Herrin Jr. of Neosho; her parents, Walter Arthur Crews and Sarah Elizabeth Jefferson Crews of Neosho; her sisters: Kathryn Marble, Retha Johnson and infant sister Gertrude Elizabeth Crews; and by her nephew Gerald Marble..

Her hope, one that she repeated often, was that she wanted to live to the age of 100. Although she defied predictions that she would not survive after several medical crises over the past few years, “Little Toughie” finally succumbed at age 98 and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mavis Stewart

(From Knell Mortuary)

Mavis Lynn Stewart, a gentle soul whose brief presence in this world left an indelible mark on the hearts of her family, passed away on May 23, 2025, in Joplin, Missouri. Mavis, the cherished daughter of Dylan and Madison Stewart, was a beacon of love and joy to her doting parents from the moment they learned of her arrival.

Mavis's impact was profound, touching the lives of her beloved brother, Mavrick Stewart, who looked forward to being the protective and loving sibling. Mavis was the treasured granddaughter of Melvin and Reba Dalon III on her mother's side and Daniel and Nancy Stewart on her father's side. Each grandparent had eagerly anticipated the opportunity to spoil and nurture her with all the wisdom and affection they had to offer.

Mavis's arrival was celebrated by a host of aunts and uncles, including Melvin Dalon IV, Michael, Maliakhi, and Matthew Dalon, as well as Natalie Stewart-Cutbirth and her husband Alex, Devin, Derek, Damon, and Nichole Stewart. Gary Yates

(From Knell Mortuary)

Gary Wayne Yates, 69, Nixa, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at his house in Kimberling City, Missouri. He was born on January 30, 1956, in Carthage, Missouri, the son of the late Charles Lee Yates and Eunice Jane (Farmer) Yates. Gary's life was marked by his jovial spirit, unwavering friendliness, and the love he so generously spread.

Gary began his career working alongside his father at Faubion Tank Shop, where he developed a strong work ethic and valuable skills. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1974 and went on to attend Missouri Southern State College, where he furthered his education before embarking on a successful career. He dedicated many years to H.E. Williams as a national sales manager until his retirement.

Even in retirement, Gary remained active by assisting with the family business at La-Z-Boy, where he enjoyed lending a hand and staying connected with those he loved. His professional life was complemented by involvement in his community, where he was a past member of the Carthage Rotary Club and maintained a lasting connection to Fairview Christian Church in Carthage. Gary married Cindy Wickstrom on January 2, 2004, in the Carthage Courthouse.

His family was the cornerstone of his life. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Cindy Yates; his adored children, Shayla Yates of Springfield, Missouri, and Maddy Scanio (Danny), also of Springfield; his grandchildren, Layla Morton, Leah Morton, Ariyah Morton, Brooks Scanio, and Graham Scanio, who will miss their grandfather's humor and warmth. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Charlene McDaniel, Sarah Biles, Connie Yates Brown, and twin sister, Sherry Vaughan; and his nephew, Kevin Yates.

Gary’s passions were as spirited as his personality. A loyal Kansas City Chiefs fan, he held season tickets for 40 years—a true testament to his dedication and enthusiasm. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and had a love for the open road, whether it was riding his Harley Davidson or cruising in one of his Corvettes. A devoted animal lover, Gary had a special bond with his horses and dogs, cherishing the time spent caring for and being around them. He had a deep love for golf and could often be found on the course, sharing laughs and stories.

Above all else, Gary cherished time with his family—whether it was spending a day at the lake, celebrating life’s moments, or simply relaxing together on the porch while listening to classic '70s rock.

Described by those who knew him as funny, friendly, and spirited, Gary had a remarkable knack for making everyone around him smile. He was a gifted storyteller who never hesitated to tell it like it was, and he never met a stranger—always striking up conversations and making people feel welcome. His humor was infectious, his companionship treasured, and his presence a source of comfort and joy. Gary's ability to light up a room with his laughter and connect with people from all walks of life will be deeply missed.
