James L. Hess, 66, Carthage, passed away at his home after a year long battle with cancer.
Jim was born June 12, 1951 in Kansas City, MO, son of the late Dr. Orien E. Hess and Ruth M. Zulauf Hess. He was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1969. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics at University of Missouri, Rolla, and his Masters and PHD in statistics from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. He married Janis Sue Crocker on July 8, 1972 in
Carthage; she survives. After graduating, Jim taught statistics at Kansas State University, was a statistician for A.I. Dupont Co for 15 years then moved his family back to Carthage, Missouri where he worked for Leggett & Platt for 17 years, retiring in 2012.
Additional survivors include three sons, Zachary (Marianne) Hess, Carthage, Benjamin (Erin) Hess, Landenberg, PA, Samuel (Joy) Hess, Greenwood, MO; a daughter, Emily Carrol, Carthage; three brothers, Robert (Kim) Hess, Carthage, John (Kirsti) Hess, Houston, TX and Tom (Kelly) Hess, Shawnee, KS; one sister, Mary (Ron) Rainosek, Lewisville, Texas and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Friday, July 7, 2017 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO. Funeral mass will be recited at 10 AM, Saturday, July 8 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Carthage. Inurnment will be in the north mausoleum, Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Carthage Crisis Center, Hospice Compassus or Circles, in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W.
