Marlene Nichols

(From Parker Mortuary)

Marlene Malee Nichols, age 86, Joplin, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at her home, which was her delight.

Marlene was born April 13, 1934 in Lawton, Oklahoma, daughter of the late Elwin Everett Long and Elva Bell (Sutton) Long. She grew up in Gate, Oklahoma where she graduated from Gate High School. She also received some college credits toward her nursing degree.

She married the love of her life, Frank Nichols on September 20, 1952. They were married for over 63 years. They lived in Forgan, Oklahoma on the Nichols Homestead where they farmed until moving to Plains, Kansas in 1968.

Marlene worked for Southwestern Heights High School as a custodian for 25 years before retiring. She took care of a lot of teachers’ children who became lifelong friends. They moved to Joplin in 2009. She was always active at her churches, and most recently was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church in Joplin. Marlene was known by all to be a prayer warrior – if she knew you – she prayed for you. Her gift of calling and writing people to encourage them was her passion. She will be missed by many including nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents, Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nichols, who passed away in 2016; two brothers, Everett Long and Lyle Long; a granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Nichols; great-grandchildren, Tristen, Charis, and Emmett; and a son-in-law, Bob Preble.

Survivors include her children, Lavonna Preble (Al Kimery) of Webb City, Rita Glenn (Gene) of Joplin, and John Nichols (Sherrie) of Coffeyville, Kansas; 19 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Wildwood Baptist Church with Lew Poe, Gene Glenn, and Jereme Glenn officiating.

A celebration of her life will also be held in Forgan, Oklahoma on Saturday, April 17th at 11:00 a.m. followed by Inurnment of her ashes at Forgan Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Oklahoma Baptist Children’s Home which Frank and Marlene were faithful supporters through prayers and donations. (www.obhc.org) Please designate to Marlene Nichols, or send to Parker Mortuary.
