Georgia Mattison

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Today, March 31, 2022, our sweet Momma, Georgia Mae Cantrell Mattison got to meet Jesus. Born May 16, 1932 to George and Naomi (Cockrum) Cantrell. She grew up in Galena and lived most of her life there.

Mom met Dad at the age of 14 at the skating rink in Galena. They were married May 18, 1950 the same day she graduated from Galena High School.

Mom was a lifetime member of 6th Street Baptist Church, Galena. She loved her Lord and Savior with her whole heart and was never afraid to share the gospel with anyone who would ask.

She was quick to tell you if you were misbehaving that you better hit your knees and make it right because time was a gift and tomorrow were not promised. Mom had a true servant’s heart. She took care of so many and did so much to help wherever and whenever it was needed and never complained.

Mom worked for USD #499 for 32 years in the kitchen. When she retired, she had worked her way to being the head cook. She retired in 2003. Mom loved all the kids and they all loved her, too. If they needed a hug, she always had one for whomever needed it. She affectionately became known as the lunch lady which brought an infectious smile to her face. She made sure no kid ever left hungry.

Mom is survived by two children; Monty Mattison, Galena, and girlfriend, Patty Lessman, Joplin, MO, and Brenda Baugh and husband Paul, Baxter Springs, KS; two brothers, Paul Cantrell and wife, Doris, Joplin, and Harry Cantrell and wife Dot, Galena; 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Naomi Cantrell, her husband, Elmont (Sonny) Mattison, one brother, Eugene C Cantrell and one sister, and her best friend, Stella Faye McMurray.

A very special thank you to all of the staff at Quaker Hill Manor who loved our mom and took such very good care of her the last couple of months when she couldn’t be at home. You will always be a part of our family.

Mom has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, for cremation. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 9, 2022 at First Christian Church, Galena. Brother Bob Martin and Brother David Schepper will share the service.

There will be a come and go visitation from 4pm to 7pm, Friday, April 8, 2022 at 1600 Main St, Galena.

In lieu of flowers please made a donation to St Jude’s in care of the funeral home.
