Ed Sommer

(From Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home)

Edward "Ed" Louis Sommer, a father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024, in the comfort of his home, in Sarcoxie at the age of 77. Born on January 9, 1947, in Garnett, Kansas, to the late Louis and Gertrude (Donaven) Sommer.

Ed was a graduate of Sarcoxie High School. After graduation, he served his country with honor during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army.

On September 7, 1968, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Joplin, Missouri he was united in marriage to Eunice Irene Davis. Together they shared fifty-three years until her passing on January 18, 2022. Ed dedicated many years to FAG Bearing in Joplin, where he retired as a respected machinist. His commitment to his work was surpassed only by his devotion to his family and community.

Surviving Ed are his son, Dustin Sommer (Michelle) of Sarcoxie, and his grandchildren, Matt, Ashleigh, Brooke, and Grayson Sommer; siblings, Gregory Sommer (Janice) of Sarcoxie, Charles Sommer (Marcia) of South Carolina, Shirley Aubey of Hampshire, Texas, and Linda Huff of Stotts City; brothers-in-law, Bill Davis of Webb City, and Jack Davis (Ronda) of Carthage, along with several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, who was the love of his life, his parents, his brothers-in-law Jimmy Huff and Vic Aubey; sister-law, Gloria Davis; and niece Johanna Sommer.

A man of faith, and member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Carthage, Ed was deeply involved in his church, where he was a beacon of light and support to his fellow congregants. His interests extended beyond the walls of his home and church, as he enjoyed traveling and experiencing the beauty of the world. Always ready to lend a hand, Ed volunteered at The Sarcoxie Senior Center and was known for his willingness to help others whenever the need arose. In-lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Bill and Virgina Leffen Center for Autism in care of the funeral home.
