Leroy Thomason

Bartlett "Leroy" Thomason, age 80, Joplin, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021, peacefully at his home in Joplin.

He was born July 1, 1940 in Claremore, Ok, to the late Bart Thomason and Mertie Thomason. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1958.

In early 1961, Leroy meet the love of his life, Karen Kaye Woolever. Leroy and Karen were married August 18, 1961. They had two daughters, Chris and Cindy.








Leroy worked for Pennington Drug Company (that later became Amerisource) for over 42 years. He held various positions from outside sales, IT manager and retiring as Operation Manager in 2002. Outside of work, he held many roles. He was a Freemason, 32° member of the Valley of Joplin, Orient of Missouri, since 1983, and a member of the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque out of Springfield, Missouri from 1983 – 2013. He became lovingly known as “Poppy” to everyone, including his five grandchildren. 

He enjoyed time with family and friends at the house on Table Rock Lake. Many summer days were spent cruising the shorelines with Poppy as captain of the pontoon. He also enjoyed attending track meets, baseball and softball games, and many other activities the grandkids were participating in.

In addition to his parents Leroy, was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Karen Kaye.

Survivors include his sisters Joyce Whisenhunt (Leroy) of Tulsa, OK, and Barbara Worley (Earl) of Owasso, OK; two brothers Rodney "Butch" Thomason (Mary) of Utah, and Howard Thomason (Phyllis) of Jasper, MO; two daughters Chris Strait and fiancé Max Spencer of Jasper, MO, and Cindy Moran and husband Blair of Joplin; five grandchildren, Jacob Asbell and wife Krista of Carl Junction, Sabrina Reineke and husband Seth of Carl Junction, Russell Asbell and Collin Asbell, both of Carl Junction, Cody Strait and wife Erin of Pensacola, FL; seven great-grandchildren Sophie Asbell-Spencer, Austynn Asbell, Madelyn Reineke, Dylan Strait, Asher Asbell, and two great-grandaughers, due March and April 2021; as well as numerous adored nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life for both Leroy and Karen at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in Leroy’s memory to The Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque, 601 St, Louis, Springfield, MO., 65806, or to The Valley of Joplin, Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 505 S. Byers, Joplin, MO., 64801
