Melrose Brafford

Melrose Edith Brafford, age 92, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Mt. Vernon Place Care Center. She was born February 12, 1933, in Joplin, Missouri, the daughter of Walter Herman and Edith Mary (Blanford) Sullwood.

Melrose was a 1950 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. After graduation she worked at Carnation Can Company in Mt. Vernon. When her children were little and still at home she did babysitting in her home and later went to work at Evans Dog Collar Factory in Mt. Vernon and Engineering Apparel in Monett, Missouri. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.

On April 14, 1951, she married John Brafford, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on January 6, 2021.

Melrose is survived her daughter, Janet Jones of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; son, Emery Brafford of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; six grandchildren, Sasha Gibson and her husband, Robert, of Aurora, Missouri, Jeremy Jones and his wife, Angela, of Neosho, Missouri, Alissa Stoddard and her husband, Richard, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Jenna Swihart and her husband, Jason, Emily Chapman (Joe Sam) and Heath Brafford and his wife, Alyssa, all of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Melrose was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Edith, her husband, John and son-in-law, Dwayne Jones.

A private immediate family graveside under the direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery, southwest of Mt. Vernon.
