Barbara Jean Spencer, age 80, Carthage, passed away at 4:40 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017 at St. Luke's Nursing Home after an illness.
Barbara was born November 23, 1936 in Joplin to the late Grover Cleveland Ward and Amanda Opal Robinson Ward and had lived in the Joplin area all of her life.
She worked as an administrative assistant at the office of Charles Parrish and was responsible for typing the construction plans for Northpark Mall. She then joined the office staff as an administrative assistant at the police academy at Missouri Southern State College, retiring the final time in 2014 after 40 years of service. In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed horses and being outside gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachelle Hanke, Carthage, Robin Ruhmann, St. Louis, Missouri; and seven grandchildren, Matt Hanke, Amanda Ruhmann, Jake Ruhmann, Zach Ruhmann, Sarah Ruhmann, Nathan Ruhmann and Ethan Hanke.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by a brother, John Ward.
Memorial services are planned for Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Missouri Southern State University Police Academy Auditorium. Dr. Jack Spurlin will officiate.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
