James R. Marcum, 79, of Joplin, MO, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Freeman Hospital. Jim was born April 30, 1937 in Indianapolis, IN. Leaving a career in the oil equipment business, Jim and his family moved to Joplin in 1971 to attend Ozark Bible College. While a student, he served as Minister of Gray’s Point Christian Church. Following his graduation in 1976, Jim became a professor at the College, was involved in Administration as Admissions Director, and was currently an Adjunct Professor with online classes. His career with the College spanned over 40 years. Jim also received his Master’s Degree from Cincinnati Christian University. Jim was a member of the Carterville Christian Church, where he served as an Elder, Sunday School Teacher and as a mentor to many. Jim was an avid horseman and volunteered with Magic Moments Horse Riding Therapy, and at Wildcat Glades.
Jim married Sonya Poppaw December 9, 1956 in Indianapolis, IN and she survives. Additional survivors include a son, James G. Marcum and wife Melissa, Kansas City, MO, one daughter, Kambi Swan and husband David, Statesville, NC, one brother, Rick Marcum and wife Chelle, Carlisle, PA, one sister, Carmella Willits and husband Ron, Bedias, TX, 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, (one more on the way), and many nieces and nephews.
Services are at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Carterville Christian Church with Robin Sigars, and Damien Spikereit, Ministers, Officiating. Burial will follow in the Carterville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Monday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel in Joplin. Memorial contributions are requested to Carterville Christian Church, Ozark Christian College, or Spring River Christian Village in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
