Debora May

Debora Kay May, age 70, of Joplin, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024, at Foxberry Terrace in Joplin.

Debora, daughter of the late Fred and Norma (Henson) Lowell, was born on April 14, 1953, in Richmond, CA. She grew up in the sunny state of California and moved to the Joplin area several years ago to make her home. Her husband, James May, preceded her in death in 2006.

Debora dedicated her life to the well-being of others and had passion for nurturing those around her. She had an unwavering love for children, which was the cornerstone of her life's work. As a foster mother, her door and heart were always open, providing a safe haven and a loving home to numerous children over the years.








Debora found joy in creating beautiful things with her hands. Her talent was evident whether it was crafting, sewing or a colorful garden that bloomed under her care. Her love for animals, with her gentle spirit and compassionate nature made her a friend to all creatures great and small. Debora volunteered weekly at the First Baptist Church of Carl Junction, where she served meals with a smile. Her culinary skills were a source of comfort and joy, especially to her family. Debora's legacy is one of unconditional love and the profound impact she had on each life she touched.

Survivors include her children, Jennifer May, of Joplin, Kayla May, of Joplin, Amelia Laurance, of Springfield, Miranda May, of Joplin, and Annika May, also of Joplin; siblings, Carol Hansen, and her husband, Nick, of Lake of the Ozarks, Diane Mordinoia, Larry Henson, Fred Henson, and Robert Henson, all of California; two grandchildren, Odin and Amias; three great grandchildren, Evie, Ciaran, and Malkolm; and numerous nieces and nephews. 








In addition to her parents and husband, Debora was preceded in death by siblings, Karen Lynn Hansen, Patricia Garcia, Ruth Marie Dupri, Betty Joan Burling, Donald Leroy Hanson, Ronald Dean Hanson, Gerald Hanson, and Richard Harold Hanson; and one son, Kris May, in 2023.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 6:00 PM at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin with the family to receive friends for a time of visitation following services. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in memory of Debora, may be made to the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks, and may be entrusted to the mortuary.




Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
