Betty Harris

On June 25, 2021, Betty Ann Harris, 75, unexpectedly passed away after living an exceedingly full life. Betty was born in Springfield, MO., on July 7th, 1945 to James Kenneth Harris and Marian Pruitt Harris.

Betty graduated from the University of Arkansas, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She taught math for the Shawnee Mission School District, before being a flight attendant for United Airlines for a few years.. She earned her Master’s Degree in accounting from Colorado State University, was a CPA, and became a professor at Mesa State University in Grand Junction, Colorado.








After 30 years in Colorado, Betty moved back to Missouri, and took a job as an accounting professor at Missouri Southern State University. During her second year there, she was awarded the University Teaching Award. Helping students learn was her passion. She will be long remembered for the high level of energy she applied to work and all her activities, especially PEO.

Betty was a member of a MSSU breakfast group of retired faculty and stayed in contact with many of her retired coworkers and former students. She always loved cats, recently adopting two from her favorite charity, the Joplin Humane Society.

Betty is preceded in death by both parents. She leaves behind her brother, John Harris, and nephew Kent Harris of Tulsa, niece Trisha Fields of Austin, cousin Becky Miller of Florida, very close friend Julie Johnston of Joplin and many other friends.

Betty will be laid to rest with her parents at Mount Hope Cemetery. A graveside service will be held on July 26, 2021 (Monday) at 10:00 am.
