(From Clark Funeral Home)Dorothy Irene Costigan Mulik passed away peacefully at her home on June 29, 2021 after a long illness.
Dorothy was born on October 28, 1934 in Ottawa, Kansas to John R. Costigan and Teresa C. Lickteig Costigan. That same day, the family rushed her over to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church two blocks from her home to have her baptized.
She attended St. Rose of Lima Elementary School and started piano lessons there. Within two years she was playing organ for the Children’s Masses. She graduated from Bishop Ward Catholic High School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1952.
Dorothy and Charles were in the same music groups in school, but it wasn’t until Dorothy’s sister Pat, who was dating Charles’ best friend, set Charles and Dorothy up on a double date. They continued dating through the summer of 1961 and on Christmas Eve 1961, Charles proposed and Dorothy accepted. She selected the wedding date of June 2, 1962. Dorothy and Charles raised four children: Tracy, Paul, Becky and Mark.
Dorothy was a lifelong musician. She had a calling to play the organ for Mass at church that started in elementary school. She continued playing for Mass every week until she fell ill in 2011. Her gift allowed everyone to experience worship during Mass through music. Her legacy as a church musician continues with her children and grandchildren. She shared her talent with the entire community by providing music for countless weddings and funerals over the years and played piano for local dance recitals and community musical theater productions. She also enjoyed singing with the Neosho Community Choir.
Dorothy supported her church, St. Canera Catholic Church, through all the years she lived in Neosho. She was on the Church Board for many years. She helped form and chaired the first Liturgy Committee and taught children’s Sunday School. She was active in the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and was named “Woman of the Year” in 1975.
As her children grew up, Dorothy was a busy homemaker. She was active in Girl Scouts and Camp Re-NEW-All serving in leadership roles. She was a wonderful mother who made sure that her children were raised with a strong foundation in church and family.
After her children were grown, Dorothy returned to the workforce as an Administrative Secretary at Layton & Associates and later as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Nursing at Freeman Hospital in Neosho. She retired in 1999.
Dorothy stayed busy with many volunteer activities such as Meals on Wheels, Soroptimist International and Neosho Welcome Wagon. She loved all kinds of needlework, watching musicals and watching the birds at her bird feeders.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Joe Costigan and Rev. Richard Costigan S.J., a sister, Ann Schneider and a son-in-law, Jeff Schloss.
She is survived by her loving husband Charles Mulik, her children Tracy Schloss, Paul and wife Cindee, Becky Haddock and husband Rick, and Mark and wife Heidi and 8 grandchildren.
Dorothy touched so many lives and will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew her. We rejoice to know that she is now playing organ in heaven for the angel choir.
