Walt Hurst

Walter Byron Hurst, Jr., known affectionately as Walt to his friends and family, passed away suddenly on January 11, 2024, in Joplin, Missouri at the age of 79. Born on July 31, 1944, in Grafton, North Dakota, Walter's journey through life was marked by his gentle spirit, adventurous soul, and unwavering kindness.

Walter's early years were spent in the close-knit community of St Thomas, North Dakota, where he was raised by his loving parents, Walter Hurst Sr, and Ruth Christianson Hurst. His bond with his family was a testament to the values that would define his entire life.






 Walter's journey led him to find his partner, Marilynn Unruh Hurst, with whom he shared 30 cherished years of marriage. They built a life filled with love and laughter, surviving Walter are three wonderful children: Christopher, Sharon, and Rachael.



Walter's legacy is carried on by his mother, Ruth of Grafton North Dakota; devoted wife, Marilynn, of Webb City, MO; his son, Christopher Hurst and daughter-in-law Rachel Chapman of Erie, CO; his daughters, Sharon Klassen of Warroad, MN, and Rachael Maculewicz and son-in-law Tim of Lakewood, CO. His grandchildren, Madeline and her husband Scott, Logan, Zachary, Mason, and Jaxon, will miss their grandfather's gentle guidance and endless support. Walt's brothers, Warren (Marie), Bob (Kristi), Norman (Lisa), and Kent (Karen), along with his sisters, Jeana (Tim) and Marcia Hurst, will fondly remember their brother's adventurous spirit and kind heart.

An alumnus of the University of North Dakota, Walter's pursuit of knowledge lead to his foundation for his diverse and successful career. His professional life began in the construction industry in California, where he honed his skills and work ethic. 

Walter's career path eventually brought him back to the Midwest, where he became a valued employee at Marvin's Window and Doors in Warroad, MN. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when he took the helm of Main Street Bar and Grill and Lakewood Park and Sells, both located in Warroad, MN, where he became a well-respected business owner and community member.

Walter's dedication to his community was evident in his membership at Zion Lutheran Church of Warroad, MN. His faith was a cornerstone of his life. He served his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the United State Army and his community with the same generosity and warmth that he extended to his family and friends.








Those who knew Walt best would describe him as a man of great gentleness, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand. His adventurous nature led him on many journeys, both literal and metaphorical, and he approached each new experience with an open heart and mind. Walter's kindness was his hallmark, touching the lives of everyone he met and leaving a lasting impact on his community.

Walter is preceded in death by his father, Walter Hurts, Sr., a brother, Rick Hurst and a sister, Kristi Hurst.

A committal of ashes will take place at a later date in Saint Thomas, North Dakota. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
