Ernie Young

(From Rogers Family Mortuary)

Ernest Weldon Young, affectionately known as Ernie to all who loved him, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, at his home in Antonito, Colorado. Born on May 10, 1941, in Littlefield, Texas, Ernie brought warmth, laughter, and unwavering strength to the world around him for 84 beautiful years.

Ernie was the treasured son of the late Joseph M. Young and Johanna M. Hensel Young. He was born and raised in Texas and later moved to Colorado after he graduated from high school, where he lived, married and raised a family.

He is now reunited with his beautiful mother, father and his siblings — Erlene Young Harris, Martin Young, Martha Ann Young, Loren Young, and Melba Sue Young Strickland — each of whom held a permanent place in his heart.

Ernie was a man of great knowledge and wisdom and was true to what he believed in. He enjoyed driving his semi truck, being a businessman and operating his own sawmills/lumber yard with the mother of his children. He enjoyed riding his bike and sitting peacefully outside, watching hay trucks leave the valley. The only thing he loved more, was his family. He truly loved his kids - Trent (Deb) Young of Alamosa; Nicolette (Doug) Allen of Montrose, CO; Jeri Young of Alamosa. His seven grandchildren - Trent (Anna) Young Jr, Thom Allen, Mark Allen, Weldyn Allen, Donathon Archuleta, Tedi Lyn (Cody) Wiescamp and Trey Archuleta. As he had become older he cherished his time spent with his great grandkids-Paislee, Kenzie and Wesley Wiescamp.

Ernie’s love and memory is also lovingly held by his siblings: Joseph “Jody” Young Jr. of Amarillo, TX; Ronald Young of Lubbock, TX; Tony Young of Amarillo, TX; and Loretta (Earl) Bales of Neosho, MO. Alongside a large extended family and countless dear friends, we will all remember the light he brought into every room — a light that never dimmed.

One of Ernie’s greatest passions was the study of Nature’s Law. He cherished spirited conversations and thoughtful debates, always eager to share insights or challenge ideas with a twinkle in his eye. His curiosity was contagious; his wisdom, humbly offered; his presence, unforgettable. In every discussion, he left others a little more thoughtful and a little more seen.

A memorial service celebrating Ernie’s life will be held at the Dutch Mill in Antonito, CO, on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at 1 pm. Though his physical presence is gone, we find comfort in the legacy of love, resilience, and grace he leaves behind and in the gentle echoes of his laughter that still lingers in our hearts.
