Vernon W. Correll was born May 16, 1928 and died August 5, 2016 at Oswego Hospital, Oswego, Kansas. Vernie's parents were Thomas Leroy Correll and Anna M. "Duncan" Correll. Vernie was born and raised in Oswego attended Oswego schools and graduated from Oswego High School.
Vernie joined the Army and while stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma he met the love of his life Laura Callicott. They were married in Lawton, OK on December 19, 1948. Immediately following the wedding they moved to Oswego where they have resided since.
Vernie and Laura had 2 daughters, Cheryl Lewis (Steve) of Oswego and Julie Blankenship (David) of Webb City, MO., four grandchildren Janna Olson (Kevin), Ty Lewis (Nikki), Laurie Crocker (BJ) and Sara Hoffman (Dustin), 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 brothers and sisters.
Vernie began his career carrying mail for the US postal service for 14 years. He quit the postal service when he and Laura bought Realty, Inc., which they owned and operated until their retirement. Vernie was a true servant. He served as song leader for over 40 years for the Oswego First Baptist Church. He served on the USD504 Board of Education for 12 years. He served for 8 years as a Legislator in the Kansas House of Representatives. He was also a long time Mason, Shriner, Lions Club Member, Founding Member of both the Oswego Golf Course and Oswego Industries. He and Laura were two of the original partners that built The Oswego Home Place. He was involved in numerous other civic organizations through his lifetime. Vernie retired from the US Army Reserves as a major after serving over 25 years of service.
He was also an avid woodworker until shortly before his death, creating everything from furniture to letter openers. He was always in his shop "creating" until he was no longer physically able to do so.
Vernie spent his entire life serving others. He served God, family, church, community, State of Kansas, and the United States of America.
The family is having a private service but will have a "Celebration of Life" to be announced at a later date.
