Virgil Boyd

Virgil Crosby Boyd, Jr. died on February 28, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Olathe, Kansas.

He was born on September 27, 1929 in Girard, Kansas to Virgil Crosby Boyd and Christeen Violet Boyd. He was raised in Webb City, Missouri, graduating from Webb City High School in 1947.

After graduation, Virgil enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1948 to 1952. He was a machinist mate, who served on the USS Chilton, a Bayfield-class attack transport.






 

While in the Navy, Virgil served in China to help withdraw marines from the Yangtze River region, operations and exercises in the Hawaiian Islands, worked on a training ship in Cuban waters and lastly served in the Mediterranean. 

After his discharge, he returned to Webb City, Missouri and attended Joplin Junior College and the Missouri School of Mines (now Missouri S & T). Virgil graduate in 1956, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. 

That same year, he accepted a position with DuPont and moved to Clinton, Iowa. In 1958 he was transferred to Tecumseh, Kansas for the start-up of a new DuPont plant that made cellophane. He would work for DuPont until his retirement in 1985. From 1985 to 2016 he worked at Alvamar golf course in Lawrence, Kansas. Virgil enjoyed fishing, golf, and woodturning during his retirement.

In 1954 Virgil married Patsy Trussell and they were married until Patsy died in 1979. 

In 1985 Virgil married Barbara Morton and they were married until Barbara's death in 1994. 

Virgil is survived by his sons Mike and his wife Teri, Cape Coral, Florida and Ken and his wife Teri of Olathe, Kansas. There are four grandchildren, Andrew Crosby Boyd of Nashville, TN, Connor Boyd of Joplin, Missouri, Dalton Boyd and Cassidy Boyd of Olathe, Kansas.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30pm, Friday, March 25, 2022, in Carl Junction, Missouri. The Carl Junction Cemetery is located on North Grimes Street, South of Ivy Road. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to go to the Carl Junction Cemetery, these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Services are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, KS.
