Mrs. Dorothy Mae Burkey, 91, of Reeds, Missouri, departed this life on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the Sarcoxie Nursing Center.
Dorothy entered this life on June 27, 1928 in rural Newton County to the union of the late Dutch and Anna (Goen) Dodson. She grew up in the Sarcoxie area and graduated from Sarcoxie High School. She attended college and taught school for one year. On April 26, 1947 she was united in marriage to Billy Jay Burkey. Together they shared sixty eight years until his passing on May 28, 2015. She enjoyed working on the family farm, quilting, gardening, flowers and animals. She loved and was very caring for her family. She will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy Jay Burkey; and one brother, Bill Dodson.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Judy Turner (Gale) of Sarcoxie, Bruce Burkey (Camie) of Diamond, Rick Burkey (Elva) of Carthage and David Burkey of Reeds; grandchildren, Mike Turner, Tammy Gilbreath (Scott), Bart Burkey (Kelly), Logan Burkey, and Toby Brown (Kenzie); great grandchildren, Austin Turner, Megan Gilbreath, Lauren Gilbreath, Kanah Burkey, Barrett Burkey, Kutter Brown and Taitum Brown; sisters, Phyllis Carr, Betty Reid both of Sarcoxie, and Carolyn Branum (Roger) of Houston, Texas; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Burkey are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2019 in the chapel of Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, with Pastor James Yost officiating. Burial to follow in Sarcoxie Cemetery.
Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Mike Turner, Austin Turner, Bart Burkey, Logan Burkey, Toby Brown, Barrett Burkey and Scott Gilbreath. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sarcoxie Chiefs 4-H in care of the funeral home.
