Bill Taber

A retired Roadway Express "million mile" driver retired in 1989. Bill started his career working with his father hauling cars & trucks. He was proud to have purchased a truck for his Dad and he often told this story.

Billie Jack Taber, 96 passed away at the Medical Lodge nursing facility located in Neosho, MO. On January 13th, 2025.

Bill was born in Baxter Springs KS. On February 23rd, 1928 to Maynard & Neoma (Woodcock) Taber. He graduated in 1946 from Riverton, KS. High School. He joined the Army in 1950 and served with 97th Gun & Anti-Aircraft Battalion in Japan during the Korean War. 






Bill was a lifetime member of VFW Post 554 in Joplin, MO. He along with his companion of 25 years, Wilma Cates, volunteered many hours at the Veterans Clinic/Home in Mt. Vernon, MO.

Bill met and married Gwyn Shaffer and spent many happy years together on Grand Lake. She preceded him in death in 1983. Also, his parents, and siblings Burgis, Neal, and Rebecca (Chambers) precedes him in death. He is survived by his nephews Brian Taber and Dale, Gary and Steve Chambers and their extended families. Along with good and faithful friends Wayne and Candie Reinhart and caregivers Dan and Georgine Smith.








His memory will live on in all those who knew and loved him.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the Lowell Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #206, Baxter Springs, KS. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the VFW Post 554, Joplin, MO. Billie has been entrusted to Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel for cremation.
