Larry Robert "Hyram" Cook, age 72, of rural Jasper, Missouri, passed away Saturday morning, May 13, 2017, at Mercy Hospital Carthage, following an apparent heart attack.
Larry was born October 29, 1944, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the second of the four sons of the late Walt and Reba (James) Cook. He graduated from Jasper High School and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1965 through 1967. A life-long Barton and Jasper County farmer, Larry loved the land and was a staunch John Deere advocate. He was an active member of the Jasper Shrine Crew and the Barton County Shriners, as well as the Jasper Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed the fellowship of many friends at the Joplin and Lamar Elk Lodges and looked forward to the camaraderie of his Judy’s Truck Stop family each morning at breakfast. You knew you belonged in Hyram’s inner circle if he gifted you with a nickname.
Survivors include his three children, Kim “Pete” (Phil) Chaligoj, Jasper, Rob “Rabbit” (Jinda) Cook, Boston, Massachusetts; and Caralee “Sis” Cook, Joplin, Missouri; three brothers, “Brother Jim” (Laura) Cook, Jasper, “Brother Ed” (Linda) Cook, Liberal, Missouri, and “Brother Don” (Susan) Cook, Joplin, Missouri; a large and loved extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, including a close nephew, Terry Cook and a close niece, Becky “Bill Beck” Cook. Larry was adored by his nine grandchildren and they were the absolute lights of his life – Kadey “Kates” (Chris), Kamey “Kam”, Kerey “Miss Piggy”, Kenedey “Kenz”, Riley “Riles”, Mesa, Camryn “Spike”, Emelyn “Doll Baby”, and Ellise “Alice”; and three great-grandchildren, Beau, Aurora, and Colbie.
A memorial service including military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Daniel Funeral Home with Leon Bishop and Marty Compton officiating. Those serving as honorary pallbearers include Rob Cook, Camryn Simon, Phil Chaligoj, Terry Cook, Matt Cook, and Fred Waldbuesser. Burial will be in Nashville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday at the Barton County Shrine Barn in Boston, Missouri from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. with Masonic Rites conducted at 7:30 p.m.
Please honor Larry by dressing casual and wearing at least one article of John Deere attire to both the visitation and memorial service.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Barton County Shriners Children’s Travel Fund, the Jasper Masonic Lodge, or Elks Lodge, in care of the funeral home.
