Larry E. Downey, age 75, Carl Junction, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017 at his home.
Larry was born August 5, 1941 in Joplin, Missouri, son of the late Floyd E. Downey and Rosetta Alice Oliphant Downey. Larry was a lifelong resident of the Joplin area. He worked for F.A.G. Bearing, retiring in 1994 as Director of Human Resources. He loved hunting, fishing, and was an avid golfer and pool player. He enjoyed training bird dogs and horses. He has always enjoyed sports, both watching and playing, and was once a good pitcher for local fast pitch softball teams. Larry coached his children's Little League Baseball teams for a number of years. He always enjoyed being involved with his church, Fir Road Christian Church, spending time reading his Bible and many western novels. Another great joy for Larry was going to his morning coffee group, and his visits to the Senior Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Rowe.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Campbell Downey, whom he married 53 years ago; children, Bryan Downey, of Mexico City, Mexico, Boyd Downey of Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Michele Downey of Lees Summit, Missouri; brother, Steve Downey and wife Anne of Loma Linda, Missouri, brother-in-law, Barry Rowe of Baxter Springs, Kansas; grandchild, Griffin Her.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Fir Road Christian Church with Pastor Tracy Rowe and Pastor Dan Toney officiating. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Jimmy Ross, Grant Downey, Griffin Her, Mike Rowe, Craig Downey and Bryce Rowe serving as Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m..
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Fir Road Christian Church, in care of the mortuary.
