(From Derfelt Funeral Home)Robert "Bob" Wayne Gruber, 76, entered into rest, Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Joplin Gardens Skilled Nursing Facility in Joplin, MO.
He was born August 15, 1948, to Carl and Opal (McDowell) Gruber in Coffeyville, KS, who preceded him in death.
After graduating from Liberal High School, Bob attended Diesel Mechanic School in Okmulgee, OK, before proudly serving his country in the Army during the Vietnam War.
After his military service, he attended Parsons Community College where he earned his nursing degree and met the love of his life, Linda Brown. They married April 6, 1974, and made their home in Baxter Springs, KS. Linda preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2018.
Bob dedicated his life to caring for others through his work in the medical field. He served as Director of Nurses at Baxter Springs Memorial Hospital before joining St. John's Hospital, where he worked on 3 East as an RN and Nurse Shift Coordinator until the 2011 tornado. His commitment to patient care continued even after being dispersed to various hospitals and clinics following the devastating tornado. He was a Christian; he and his family were longtime members of Fellowship Baptist Church, Baxter Springs, KS, for many years where he also served as an ordained deacon.
For many years he was also the “ice cream man,” servicing patrons with his ice cream truck business, Bob’s Frozen Treats.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Amy Gruber, and their three children, Ember, Remi, and Rogan, of Gladstone, MO; his daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Mark Bennett, and their son Braeden of Joplin, MO.

Additional survivors include brothers Larry Gruber of Mesa, AZ, Michael Gruber of Manford, OK; a sister Nancy Runyon of Coffeyville, KS; brothers-in-law Gary Runyon of Bartlesville, OK, and Jim Brown and wife Bonnie of Wichita, KS; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025 at Derfelt Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs, KS. Burial will follow at Hosey Hill Cemetery, Weir, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Folds of Honor. Online condolences may be expressed at derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
