(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Orville D. Garrison, 83, of Joplin, Missouri passed away at 7:54 pm on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, after extended illnesses.
Orville was born on November 26, 1941, in Steelville, Missouri to Herschel and Dessie (Hamilton) Garrison. He graduated from Steelville High School in 1959.
On March 11, 1960 “Obbie,” as he was affectionately called by family and childhood friends, married the love of his life, the former Pauline Adams. His last words were referring to his partner of 65 years as “my precious wife.” Orville was a Vietnam era veteran, serving as a supply sergeant. While he was in the army, Orville and Pauline welcomed Teresa Diane to their family, followed by Brian David 4 years later. Orville was an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God for nearly 50 years. His love of God and people led him to pastor with compassion and kindness and travel on many mission trips in the US and abroad.
After receiving the call to the ministry while working for Bethlehem Steel at Meramec Mines in Sullivan, Missouri, Orville moved his young family to Apache Junction, Arizona in 1972. He worked as a Sales Manager for Round-Up Mobile Homes/RV Sales while traveling to Guadalupe, Arizona in ministry to the Yaqui Native American Tribe. After Guadalupe he assisted in the pioneering of Apache Junction 1st Assembly of God. From 1974 to 1977 Orville pastored First Assembly of God, in Gilbert, Arizona. In 1977 the family moved to Payson, Arizona, where he pastored until 1985. While in Payson, Orville served as Chaplain for the Payson Police Department and was on the Arizona Review Board in advocacy for abused and exploited children. He also enjoyed serving the community as an active member of the inter-denominational Payson Ministerial Alliance.
After returning to Missouri to be near aging parents in 1985, he resided in Joplin for nearly 40 years, pastoring Bethel Assembly of God church for 29.5 years until his retirement in 2015. Orville also served as a Representative for the Southern Missouri District of the Assemblies of God Men’s Ministries for 17 years. Even after retiring and with many painful and debilitating health issues, Orville continued lovingly ministering and serving God and others, often at home, from his recliner. He faithfully attended Second Assembly of God in Joplin from retirement until his death.
He is survived by Pauline, his wife of nearly 65 years. Other survivors include one daughter: Teresa Garrison of Joplin, Missouri and one son, Brian (Julia) Garrison of Joplin, Missouri.
