Nancy Dawson

(From Parker Mortuary)

Nancy Lynn Dawson, age 71, of Webb City, passed away October 31, 2023 at home surrounded by her loved ones after a recent battle with brain cancer.

Nancy was born August 31, 1952 in Joplin, Missouri, daughter of the late Carl and Mary Broadwater. She was a graduate of Joplin High School where she enjoyed playing violin in the orchestra.

Nancy married Jack Eugene Dawson on June 19, 1970 in Joplin, Missouri. Her life was devoted to her family and church. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother who spent much of her time with her family. They will forever cherish her ability to make their house a welcoming home with countless dinners around the table which always had an open seat. Her joy and zeal for life was contagious.

She had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the violin, guitar, piano, dulcimer and a handful of other instruments. She loved bluegrass and was known for her “fiddling.” For years Nancy enjoyed leading children’s music programs at First Baptist Church and eventually became the Music Director at Emmanuel Baptist Church where she directed countless programs and lead worship.

She was well known for service in the community that stretched far, from providing music in numerous nursing homes to facilitating a historical children’s program for Webb City Schools called “Great American’s Day.” Perhaps one of her greatest loves was partnering with her husband, Jack to share the gospel through his artwork and managing their business, Bittersweet Gallery.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her grandson Silas Bandy.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jack Dawson; her two children; Jeremiah Dawson and wife Michelle, Sarah Bandy and husband Josh all of Webb City, Missouri; brother Larry Broadwater and wife Jane of Joplin, Missouri; grandchildren, Zachary and wife Paisley, Joseph and wife Abby, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Elijah, Josiah; one great granddaughter Wrenlee Ray, and a great grandson David Roger due next week.

There will be an impromptu choir for her service Friday, singing some of Nancy’s favorite hymns. The family would love for any and all to join the choir to honor Nancy’s life and lift up the name of Jesus. Internment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with family serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:30-8:00 at First Baptist Church in Webb City, MO.

Linda Arft

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Linda Jane Arft passed away in the early hours September 4 th , 2023, but her 70 years of life were filled with an indominable spirit, a big, fierce love, overwhelming kindness, hard work, an always-present streak of sass, and lots of laughter.

Linda was born in Columbus, OH to her mother Barbara but grew up in and around Joplin, Missouri in more places than she could count (her words) and eventually settled in Joplin and worked at Allgeier, Martin and Associates for even more years than we could count.

Her work was a huge part of her life, but her family and friends were the greatest part. Her mother Barbara raised her along with her sister Julie, and her brothers Bob, Dave, and Rick were always there in the adventure, and later in life Sandi, Bob’s wife, became one of her closest people. She and her then husband Dennis had one son, Justin, and he and his wife Elaine had three children, Henry, Benjamin, and Penelope, who became the absolute light of her life. There are simply too many friends and family to recount here in whole, some of whom survive her, and many of whom do not, but anyone who knew Linda knew her for all of the things listed above.

For those of us who knew her best, we knew Linda as a fierce protector of just about anyone who crossed her path, always finding a way to support friends in need and giving her all for her family. She loved her people in a big, big way and truly found joy in the happiness and success of others. Her hospitality was only matched by that of her mother, and when they lived together, you were not getting out of the house without at least 12 offers for “something cold to drink” and a big meal.

Linda was also one of the smartest people we knew, being able to manage complex problems at work but also being an expert planner and manager of all things meaningful and fun at home as well. Linda was maybe most fundamentally a giver. She gave everything of herself to any task she undertook and especially gave big to her family. Yes, she gave mountains of gifts with no special occasion in mind, but she gave herself and her love and kindness to everyone, even in the most difficult of situations.

In her later years she became a caretaker for her then divorced husband Dennis, by his side to the end, and even later became a caretaker for her mother Barbara for many years, to the end, even as her own health was suffering.

Shortly after Linda moved to Knoxville to be with her grandchildren, she suffered a sudden onset of a rare disease. She was very ill for several months, but her true persona shone brightly even as she was physically diminished. She fought with everything she had and was kind, loving, giving, and even a bit sassy through all of it. She leaves a huge Linda-sized hole in all of our lives, and even though we are all better for knowing her, we sure will miss her.

The family will be holding a memorial service at Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin, MO on November 25th at 2:00 pm. Linda had no specific wishes for donations in her honor, so the family just asks that you give something of your choosing to someone in need. Also, wear something sparkly when you get a chance. She would love that.

Barbara Selph

(From Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home)

Barbara Jean (Crandall) Hashagen Selph, 81, passed away Thursday, October 26th, 2023.

Graveside Service: 1pm, at Hazelwood Cemetery, 1642 Seminole St. Springfield, Mo. 65804.

Barbara was born September 18,1942 in Neosho, Missouri to Ralph and Daisy Crandall. She graduated from Neosho High School and then attended Southwest Missouri State (SMS) University in Springfield, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Barbara was a kindergarten and elementary school teacher for the Neosho and Springfield school systems for several years before earning her certification in Learning Disabilities. After that, she worked with the Special Learning Needs program for the Fair Play School District. Barbara was a lifelong learner and returned to SMSU to earn a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling when she was in her 50’s. During that time, she worked with Transitions, a suicide intervention program within Burrell Behavioral Health.

Through her love of education, Barbara became very involved in the PTA. She was President of the Springfield/Greene County PTA for two years and was the Chairman of Juvenile Services for the State of Missouri PTA. One of her key accomplishments as a state PTA chairman was her involvement in the McGruff the Crime Dog campaign, which she introduced into the Springfield School system to promote crime prevention and safety among Springfield’s elementary population. She was a fierce defendant of children’s safety and wellbeing, which she continued to champion by partnering with a local action group to promote decency in radio – targeting “shock-jocks” and indecent content on child-accessible radio.

Barbara was also a member of many women’s clubs throughout her life and often found herself in a leadership role – largely due to her expertise in the practice of parliamentary procedure. She passionately studied Roberts Rules of Order and was very fluent in its’ practices. She was also a life-long supporter of the arts and was a member of the Southwest Missouri Museum Association for many years. She loved the theater and supported Springfield’s Little theatre – not only as a loyal season ticket patron, but she also helped build sets for their productions as well!

Barbara’s love of learning also extended to her family, and she spent several years tracing her family tree and visiting ancestral homes and family cemeteries. Her investigation uncovered family ties all the way back to Colonial America, which qualified her and her daughters to become members of the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR).

Barbara greatly enjoyed travelling - whether it was a simple road trip down to Eureka Springs or a long journey to another continent. With her children in tow, she always managed to weave education into any journey by visiting the local historic sites and learning about the people. She managed to instill that wanderlust into her daughters, who are passionate travelers themselves. Up to her final days, Barbara was still dreaming of hitting the road and was planning a trip to Maui.

Barbara had a special place in her heart for animals. She had many of her own pets over the years and donated consistently to multiple animal organizations and causes. Her kindness even extended to the unusual pets her grandson maintained at her home, including lizards, guinea pigs, rabbits, and an occasional snake!

Her other favorite pastimes included meeting monthly with her beloved Bridge group, reading, dining-out, shopping, and spending time with her beloved grandson, Cody.

Barbara was a fiercely loyal friend, mother, and grandmother. She appeared serious to strangers, but her friends and family were well-aware of her playful and mischievous side. Her sweet smile and sparkling blue eyes will remain in our hearts forever.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Daisy Crandall and son, Ryan Hashagen.

Survivors: Daughters Kelly Hashagen and wife Lyn Westfall, and Tracy Hashagen Minkara and husband Abe; Grandson Cody Hashagen and wife Mariah; beloved dog, Barbie; and numerous cousins, extended family, and friends.

Janet Haviland

Janet Layne Haviland, 64, of Joplin, passed away on October 28th winning her three-year battle with cancer and joining her creator, parents and other loved ones passed, in celebration that she is now free and singing in the heavenly choir. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time she passed and in pure Janet style left when she was ready.

Janet was born on January 7th, 1959 to Kenneth and Wanda Reynolds in Carthage, MO and lived most of her life in southwest Missouri until her move to St. Joseph, MO in 2020.

Janet is survived by two daughters, Candace Conklin, Shanna Helm, a son-in-law Brent Helm, whom she claimed as her own, 3 grandchildren, Ted Conklin, Madison and Abhrum Helm, a step-grandson Cody, and one great-grandson Weston Taylor. She is also survived by her three siblings, Linda Erskin, Bill Reynolds and Joanna Woods (George Woods) along with all of their children.

Janet had two major loves in her life, Jesus and her family, and was never shy about sharing either of these things. She was first a Christian and took great pride in bringing people to Christ. She shared this love with her daughters and grandchildren making sure that all around her knew His love and what He had done for her. Janet was a DJ for over 15 years, doing Karaoke, weddings and parties for all and she took great pride in this. She could sing ‘Mustang Sally’ bringing everyone to the dance floor and had the ability to charm anyone through her beautiful voice and love for music.

Her family and friends will miss her dearly as she was a pillar in their lives and they were blessed to belong to her. Her generous spirit, sense of humor and stubbornness will live on through her grandkids and she made sure they all knew how much she loved them and stalked them appropriately through Life360, as any grandma would, demanded they supply her in Sonic sweet teas, caramel macchiatos and hugs. She taught all of them how to fight with dignity, strength and not let bitterness into your hearts and used humor to get them through the last few months when her cancer battle increased.

There will be a ceremony to spread Janet’s ashes announced at a later date to family and friends who want to honor her memory sharing stories and celebrating her, the irony that she loved a good cemetery isn’t lost on us, but she had other plans in mind for herself.

Ann leaves four children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

She had a keen wit and great intelligence. If you were in the mood for a lively time and a few ‘brown drinks’, head to Mom’s. Just don’t try to beat her at scrabble. She always wins. Rest in peace, Mom.

Peggy Whitfield

(From Simpson Funeral Home)

Peggy Masters Whitfield was born on her family farm, four miles north of Stockton, Mo., on August 15, 1929, to John D. and Birtie J. Masters. She departed this life to be with her Lord on October 26, 2023. She was the youngest of four children.

Peggy attended rural elementary schools and helped on the family farm in her younger years. She attended El Dorado Springs and Stockton High Schools, graduating from Stockton High School in 1947. She then attended Southwest Baptist College from 1947 to 1948. Peggy accepted an elementary teaching position at Virgil, Mo., and taught there from 1948 to 1949.

In the summer of 1948, she met James L. (Jim) Whitfield who became the love of her life. They were married at Caplinger Mills, Mo., on May 29, 1949. To the union were born two children, Julie Ann Whitfield, Oronogo, Mo., and James D Whitfield, Jefferson City, Mo., who both survive. Jim preceded her in death in 2019. They enjoyed a wonderful and blessed 70 years of marriage together.

After their marriage in 1949, they resided in El Dorado Springs. Due to Jim's work with the University of Missouri Extension Service, they moved to Bolivar Mo., in 1954, to Clinton Mo., in 1959, and to Columbia, Mo., in 1965. Jim had the opportunity to obtain his doctorate degree in 1968 and the family moved to Tallahassee, Florida, where Jim earned his doctorate degree from Florida State University in 1970. The family then returned to Missouri and resided in Jefferson City until Jim's retirement in 1982 from the University of Missouri. In 1983, Peggy and Jim moved to Jim's family farm located near Oronogo, Mo.

Peggy was known for her warm and caring heart. She loved her Lord so very deeply. Her family was the light of her life. She worked tirelessly to see that they were cared for and had what they needed. She enjoyed many of life's treasures. Her cooking ability was next to none and her cherry pies were renowned. Peggy loved to see things grow on the farm, especially her flowers and kittens. She also loved to see and take care of the family horses. And seeing other wildlife was a joy to her. She enjoyed playing dominoes, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball team games with Jim. And she absolutely adored the family pet poodle, "Reign", and he adored her. He spent much of his day on her lap.

Words cannot do justice to what Peggy's loss means to her family and friends. Her down-to-earth, logical, and intelligent approach to life's matters was exemplary. She was so very selfless and supportive. Peggy was a very loving person and always tried to do "the right thing". God bless Peggy and there is no doubt she has already joined Jim in heaven and is in Jesus' loving arms.

Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A graveside service will be held for Peggy at the Stockton City Cemetery at 1 p.m., Friday, November 3, 2023. The arrangements are being made at the direction of Simpson Funeral Home, Webb City, Mo. Due to ongoing health concerns, it is requested that those attending her service observe social distancing protocols and the wearing of protective masks.

Those wishing to honor Peggy with a gesture of love may do so with flowers or by making a memorial contribution in her memory to the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Clayton Spencer

(From Bedene Funeral Home)

Clayton John Spencer, 75, of Liberal, Missouri went home to be with the Lord on October 26th, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Clayton was born to Carroll and Rose (Kociolko) Spencer on March 24, 1948 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Clayton grew up and was a 66-year resident of Mulberry, Kansas where he met the love of his life, Gloria (King) Spencer. Their puppy love turned to lifelong commitment on January 17, 1969. Clayton and Gloria were married for admirable 54 years. Clayton was raised in Mulberry, Kansas and graduated from Mulberry High School.

Clayton is survived by his wife Gloria, one son, Craig (Kim) Spencer of Liberal, Missouri, one daughter, Courtney Mintz of Wharton, Texas, one sister Carol (Ken) Kunstel of Williamsburg, VA, four grandchildren, Cade and wife Abbey, Carly and fiancé Case, Spencer and Bryson and several nieces and nephews.

If you knew Clayton, you would have experienced the deep pride that he had for his family. He never passed up the opportunity to tell others about his son and daughter-in-law’s success as business owners, or what the grandkids were achieving next. Clayton was a family man and passed down those values to his children and grandchildren that will continue to impact them throughout life. When Clayton’s family was surrounding him, it brought an indescribable peace during the last days of his earthly life.

Clayton had a passion for running heavy equipment and wasn’t afraid to work hard. This led him to a 28-year career in the coal mining field, working for Mackie-Clemens Fuel Company and making his family proud as a third-generation coal miner. Retirement didn’t slow Clayton down, as he spent many summers and busy days running heavy equipment alongside, Craig and on the family ranch whenever he got the chance. He became just another “co-worker” always keeping a close eye on those around him. When he wasn’t on the farm, you could find him on his side-by-side riding around Liberal or at Henegar’s Garage.

At the heart of Clayton’s story is resilience. After years of sickness and injury, he was the last to complain. Even in his final months battling cancer, he showed up strong for those he loved, something they will never forget.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and paternal and maternal grandparents.

Clayton will be missed most for his onery spirit, one of kind grin and his ability to give instruction to others.

Mr. Spencer has been cremated according to his wishes. Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the Rosebank Cemetery in Mulberry, Kansas with Pastor Marcus Campbell officiating. Friends may call Friday, November 3, 2023 at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma, Kansas to sign the register book and contribute to the memorials. Family suggests memorials to the Mulberry Museum, Franklin Miners Hall Museum, or the Big Brutus Museum. Donations may be left at or sent to the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, PO BOX 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
