Jim Benham

James “Jim” Benham, age 86, of Carl Junction, MO, passed away on January 7, 2025. He was born in Columbus, KS, on September 15, 1938, to parents Donald Benham and Margaret Shoots. Jim graduated from Columbus High School in 1956 and went on to graduate with a BS degree in graphic design from Pittsburg State University on January 28, 1960. That same day, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and married his beloved wife of 64 years, Jacque Scott, daughter of Jack and Lucille Scott of Riverton, KS

Jim proudly served in the Army for six months at Fort Sill, OK, before being discharged and joining the Missouri National Guard, where he served for eight years.








He worked as a graphic design engineer for MO Rogers in Joplin, MO, until 1975, when he became a co-owner of Deakins Buick Dealership in Columbus, KS. Later, he took sole ownership of the business, renaming it Benham Motors, which he operated until 1985. He then transitioned to a role as transportation supervisor at Empire Electric Company, retiring in January 2001.

Jim enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including trap and skeet shooting, golfing, model trains, and boating. His love for big band music led him to teach himself to play the drums, performing in local bands. His last gig was playing in St Paul’s Methodist Church, for several years.

Jim is survived by his living wife, Jacque Scott; daughters Lori Benham (Keith Southern) of Springfield, MO, and Kammi Grosse (Greg) of Ozark, MO; three grandchildren: Jaclynne Grosse of Springfield, MO, Katelyn Layton (Alex) of Nixa, MO, and Erin Benham of Springfield, MO; two great-grandchildren, Langston Grosse and Parker Layton; and three siblings in law: Kathy Wyman (Mick), Becky Baker (Bruce) and Joy Scott.








He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Benham and Margaret Shoots; his in-laws, Jack and Lucille Scott; and brothers-in-law, Michael Scott and Harvey and Betty Scott.

A visitation will be held on January 18, 2025, at The Well United Methodist Church at 601 W Well St, Carl Junction, MO from 1:00 – 2 ;00 pm. with the service following at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be sent to The Well United Methodist Church, or Watered Gardens in Joplin, MO.

Jim will be remembered for his deep love for his family, and his wonderful sense of humor.
