Letha Smith

(From Parker Mortuary)

Letha Fern Smith, age 89, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in Carthage, Missouri. She was born on October 8, 1936, in Prosperity, Missouri, and lived a life marked by love, generosity, and devotion to her family.

Letha was born to the union of the late Ray Vernon and Josephine (Jeans) Holden. She grew up with the values of hard work, kindness, and family closeness that would remain with her throughout her life. Those who knew her will remember her as a loving and generous woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth to those around her.

Letha wed her loving husband, George "JD" Smith on August 7th, 1954. She spent every moment she could with her children, raising them and teaching them all about the world around them. Her home was a place of guidance, care, and steady encouragement, and her children carried with them the lessons she shared through both words and example. Her devotion to her family was evident in the way she gave of herself so freely and so completely.

Letha loved to read and work in her flower garden, finding joy in the simple and meaningful parts of life. Her fur baby, Ellie, was never far behind, and the companionship they shared brought her much happiness. These quiet pleasures reflected the gentle spirit she carried and the comfort she found in the everyday moments of life.

She leaves surviving three sons, Rocky Don Smith and Vickie of Joplin, MO, David Ray Smith and Tabatha of Joplin, MO, and Steven Wayne Smith and Cheryl of West Branch, Michigan; her daughters, Jeanne Marie Williams of Joplin, MO, and Neva Jo Brill of Joplin, MO; one sister, Betty McDaniels of Atkins, TX; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Her family was a source of great pride and joy to her, and her love for them will remain a lasting part of their lives.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, George "JD" Smith, two brothers, Bill Holden and Gene Holden, and one sister, Bessie Gregory. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kendall and Carlea.

Letha will be remembered for her gentle nature, her generous heart, and the steadfast love she gave to her family. Her life was one of devotion, and the example she set will continue to guide and inspire those she leaves behind. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered always.

Memorial services for Mrs. Letha Fern Smith will take place at Parker Mortuary on Friday, October 9th at 2 p.m. with Alan McCamey officiating.
