Charles F. Burt, age 90, Joplin, was called home by his Lord and by the love of his life, Rosalie, at 11:02 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.
Charles was born June 2, 1926 in Joplin, Missouri to the late Charles F. Burt, Sr. and Nellie Neal Burt.
After his father's death, he began working at the early age of 12, taking over his father's Joplin Globe/Herald delivery route. Charles worked several years as a teller at the former First National Bank in Joplin and also for Bank of America in Inglewood, California. He then joined the staff at The Yellow Pages as an advertising sales associate for a short time before eventually joining the May L. Arant Real Estate Agency with his wife, Rosalie and her mother, May.
He moved back to Joplin in 1962 and worked at the Roy Ferguson Real Estate Agency for one year, the amount of time it took before he could officially open his own company. In 1963, he and his wife Rosalie founded Charles Burt Realty and to this day, remains a pillar in the area real estate industry.
Charles was a member of The Realtors Association, Club 44, The Board of Realtors and was a past recipient of the Realtor of the Year award. He was a longtime member of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce and First United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of directors and was a trustee. Charles was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, where he served during World War II as a squad leader in the first platoon.
He married the woman of his dreams, Rosalie Marie Arant in 1944 in Inglewood, California. She preceded him in death only six weeks earlier on August 18, 2016 after sharing 72 years of marriage together. Throughout their time together, they traveled the world, never traveling apart. They were an amazing love story, meeting at the age of 15 and marrying at 17, raising a family, building a family business, employing several of their children and grandchildren over the years, teaching them so many wonderful life lessons.
Charles was also preceded in death by a sister, Clendora Thomas.
Survivors include his children, Janis McGrew Sturgis and husband, Mike, Joplin, Jim Burt, Joplin, Charles Allyn Burt and wife, Pennie, Joplin, Rosalie Biastock and husband, Doug, Joplin, David Burt, Cedar Creek, Missouri, Kathleen Spidell and husband, Jackson, Joplin; a sister, Maty Boone, Long Beach, California; grandchildren, John McGrew, Jason McGrew, Julie Trahin, Sam Sturgis, Michael Sturgis, Troy Burt, Brian Burt, Nathan Burt, Andrew Zimmer, Skylar Burt, Tyler Burt, James Burt, Jr., Julianna Burt, Lance Burt, Jennifer Burt, Jill Askins, Autumn Easter, Molly Sears, Paul Greninger, Sarah Rosalie McDowell, Melissa Werle, Adrienne Kuchulis, Robert Martz, Jackson Spidell, Jamie Bassler; thirty one great grandchildren and several extended family members.
Services are planned for Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 4th and Byers. Rev. Bruce Jacobs will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John McGrew, Jason McGrew, Troy Burt, Robert Martz III, Sam Sturgis, Donny McDowell and Michael Sturgis, Jr.. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Compassus or to First United Methodist Church, both in care of Parker Mortuary.
