Leo M. Rader, of Lockwood, Missouri, departed this life on Monday, October 10, 2016, at the Good Shepherd Community Care and Rehabilitation Facility at the age of 90 years. He was born May 20, 1926, in Rader, Missouri, to the late Hans M. and Iris Rader and was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rader.
His family moved from Rader when he was about 10 years old to Polk, Missouri, and then to Lockwood in the spring in 1938. Leo was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lockwood in 1939. He graduated from Lockwood High School in 1943. In 1944 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Philippine Islands; he was involved in the occupation of Japan. After he returned home, he attended college and played basketball at Valparaiso University, Indiana, and completed his degree at Drury College in Springfield where he was also a member of the basketball team.
In 1956 he purchased Rader’s Store in Lockwood from his parents and continued to operate this retail clothing store until January, 2015, when his health began to deteriorate. He was a member of several civic organizations including Chamber of Commerce, and he served as mayor for a number of years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lockwood and the American Legion Post #372.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents, were four sisters and one brother and their spouses: Cleo Rader (Richard) Lilienkamp, Thelma Rader (Willard) Lowe, Gladys Rader (Lowell) Crable, Howard (Mary) Rader, Ella Marie Rader (Erwin) Lewis.
Survivors include one brother-in-law Ted Lilienkamp; sixteen nieces and nephews: Kay Lilienkamp (Bernard) Means, Beverly Lowe (Jim) Holmes, Larry (Sue) Washburn, Darlene Rader Roswurm, Linda Lowe, Wayne (Yvonne) Lewis, Rodney (Nancy) Lowe, Janice Lilienkamp (Mike) Theurer, Mike (Martha) Rader, Deborah Lewis (Bill) Blamey, Randy (Marcia) Rader, Bonnie Lilienkamp (Mike) Stout, Lynda Crable (David) West, Jeff (Donna) Lewis, Bruce (Marcia) Lilienkamp, Karen Rader (Kelly) Bench; and several great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016, in Lockwood Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Kyle Fittje officiating. Burial will follow at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Friends are also welcome to call at their convenience on Wednesday after 4:00 p.m. in the church.
