Chet Lien

(From Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home)

Chester Griffiths Lien, Age 67, of Macomb tragically passed away on Friday November 16, 2023. He was born to Robert LaVerne Lien and Thelma Delores Griffiths Lien Maples on June 6, 1956 on a military base in Sendai, Japan.

Chet married the love of his life, Margaret Helen Bienemann, on August 9, 1986 in Macomb, Illinois in a theater staged for Camelot.

Together Chet and Maggie had 2 children, Melody Lien of Willow Springs, MO and Seth Lien of Chicago, IL. Chet also cherished his relationship with Carole Carr and her children. Being a grandfather was one of great joy for Chet.

Chester is preceded in death by his parents Robert Lien, Delores Maples, and William Roberts Maples, his brother Jon Lien, and his sister-in-law Patricia Bienemann.

Chet grew up in Round Grove, Missouri and lived in the country with many of his family close by. Chet fondly remembered running cattle before running to school. Chet was one of the fastest boys in his school, second only to his brother Jon.

Chet received his bachelor's degree in theater from Missouri Southern State University. He then went to Western Illinois University where he earned a masters of acting and directing, followed by a doctorate of education. Chet fell in love with Macomb and always considered it his home.

Chet devoted his life to education working at various schools but in particular his passion was most evident during his time as principal at Project Insight, principal at Astoria, Superintendent at Rockridge School District, and CEO at Arrowhead Ranch. Chet's greatest joy in life was being able to work in schools.

Chet also spent over 40 years officiating high school and college sports. Many nights year round you could find him on the field or court. Some of Chet's most loved friends were his fellow officials. Chet had no intention of slowing down with officiating as he got older.

Chet was also an avid and lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and made it to many Cardinal games over the years. He had some of his happiest moments at Busch stadium. Chet loved traveling with his love Maggie, and anyone else who wanted to travel with them.

When you think of Chet, think of him on a sandy beach at sunset, with a beer and a book, salt in his hair, and not a worry on his face.

There will be a celebration of life for Chet Sunday November 26, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at The Macomb Elks Lodge #1009, 401 S. Deere Road, Macomb, IL. There will also be a second celebration of life On Saturday December 2, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at the Miller First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 102 State Hwy DD, Miller, MO.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family requests ALL memorials be directed to the West Central Officials Association (WCOA). The WCOA will begin a scholarship in Chet's name for beginning athletic officials to cover any equipment, uniforms, registration fees, and training. As a longtime official in Illinois, Chet was a friend and mentor to so many officials. The family hopes this memorial/scholarship will continue to "mentor" beginning individuals in the profession of officiating."
