(From Clark Funeral Home)Evelyn Louise DeWitt, 98, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, at her home in Joplin, Missouri, surrounded by loved ones.
Evelyn was born April 18, 1927, to Leon and Mae Mowell in Springfield, Missouri. She met the love of her life, Keith DeWitt, on a blind date after World War II at a USO dance in downtown Springfield. They were married on October 4, 1947, in Monett. They honeymooned at the Connor Hotel in Joplin.
The family lived in Monett until Keith was recalled to the Navy in San Diego during the Korean War. After the war they lived in Aurora, Cassville, Neosho, and finally Joplin.
The family was blessed with six children. Evelyn was a wife, first and foremost. She loved her husband but was also devoted to her children. She worked tirelessly to create a wonderful and loving home. She cooked and baked every day and sewed all her girls’ clothes. Evelyn scrimped and saved to provide well for her family.
Evelyn was a founding member of the Newcomers Club in Neosho in the early 1970s. She and Keith were avid square dancers, traveling in their motor home to attend dances all over the United States. She was a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church.
Evelyn is survived by 5 children: Mike DeWitt, Oronogo; Jan Watson (Ed), Joplin; Gary DeWitt (Mary), Hermann; Tricia McKay (Jay), Mindenmines; Beth Hyde (Jeff), Joplin; daughter-in-law Beth DeWitt, Kailua, HI; 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and many other loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Keith, son Steven, daughter-in-law Ruth Ann DeWitt, brother Bill Mowell, sisters Wilma Hill, Jean Wallace, and Carol Young, and her parents.
