(From Parker Mortuary)Lorraine (Guthmiller) Asmus passed from this part of her life to her eternal home on Monday, October 13, 2025 at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 9 days. Lorraine (Lorene) was born February 4, 1934 to Peter and Dorothea (Martin) Guthmiller in Petersville Township, Kidder County, North Dakota. She was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Pettibone, ND and was later confirmed there.
Following her high school graduation at Pettibone High School, she followed a course in study that prepared her to be a Lutheran school teacher. She attended Concordia College of St. Paul, MN and later Concordia College of River Forest, IL to receive her teaching certificate. She taught at Lutheran schools in Marcus, IA and Perham, MN.
While preparing for her year of teaching in Perham, she met her future husband, Gerhardt Asmus, who had recently been installed as Pastor at her home church in Pettibone. A year later, on August 20, 1957, the couple was married and began their life together serving in congregations. Gerhardt served as pastor in in Lutheran congregations in Pettibone/Woodworth, ND; Anamoose/Drake, ND; Pevely, MO, and West Fargo, ND. Throughout those years, Lorraine was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, in choirs, and in numerous congregational and community activities. She also was a full-time mom, supporting the many activities of her husband and their four sons – Jonathan, Aaron, Nathan, and Daniel.
Following Gary’s retirement at the close of 1996, Gary and Lorraine traveled throughout all of the United States and much of Canada in their motorhome, pausing occasionally to serve congregations in ND on an interim basis. In 2004, Lorraine and Gary settled south of Joplin, MO, sharing a hobby farm with son Nathan, and hosting son Daniel for several years. Over the years in Joplin, Lorraine and Gary lived for brief times at College View Manor, a rented house in Joplin, and finally at the Communities of Wildwood Ranch.
Lorraine’s family and friends are grateful for the many gifts the Lord provided to her and through her – especially the gift of faith and trust in the eternal life given through our Savior Jesus! Celebrating God’s gifts are her family – her husband of over 68 years, Rev. Gary Asmus; her sons – Jonathan (Eva) of West Kelowna, BC; Aaron (Lisa) of Sioux Falls, SD; Nathan of Racine, MO; and Daniel of Sioux Falls, SD. Grandchildren - Andrew, Alissa (Jesse) Baker, Simon, & Adam (Vania). Great-grandchildren – Kalan and Olivia Baker.
