(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Chuck Smith, age 78, of Carterville, MO, passed from this life Monday, September 9, 2024, three days after his birthday. His final hours were spent at Circle of Life Hospice following a brief battle with cancer.
He was born in Hammond, Indiana, to Fay and Gertrude Smith of Griffith, IN. After growing up in Griffith, he graduated from Lincoln Christian College, Lincoln, IL. While attending, he met Joyce Hunter, and they married in August 1970. They served churches in Pence and State Line, IN, Drumright OK, Alba, and Carterville, MO.
After preaching, Chuck served as an elder in the church and taught several groups. He also worked some years for Premdor Manufacturing, Pittsburg, and before retiring, as a greeter for Walmart.
Chuck loved studying and taking notes from the Bible. He was a great fan of the Chicago White Sox and Indiana Hoosiers. He loved Jesus, his wife, his kids, and his grandkids. He was a man of laughter who enjoyed sharing the funny anecdotes he would read.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edgar. He is survived by his wife Joyce, son Mark of Carterville, daughter Wendy Harris and husband Casey of Carthage, and grandchildren Grant, Abiah, Kam, and Tyler.

A memorial service will be held at Carterville Christian Church on September 21, 2024, with a visitation at 11 a.m. and a noon service led by Austin Weece, minister.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions go to Carterville Christian Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory Joplin, Mo.
