Roger Wormington

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Roger Allen Wormington, age 60 of Riverton, Kansas, passed from his earthly life on February 2, 2022, in the comfort of his own home following a courageous battle over the span of 17 years to four different cancers and a stem cell transplant.

Roger was born on February 2, 1961 in Purdy, Missouri, to Roy and Ruth Wormington. Roger was raised in Cassville, MO and at an early age chose to join the Army in 1977 where he was stationed in West Germany.

Following his honorable discharge in 1979 he dedicated his life to helping others in the community. He spent nearly 20 years in law enforcement in the state of Missouri, Kansas, Southwest Missouri Drug Task Force, Missouri Highway Patrol, Division of Drug and Crime Control, and Lieutenant/Chief Detective of Cherokee County Sheriff's Department.

After his law enforcement career, and until retirement, he spent his time working with Wal-Mart where he became a Co-Manager and worked at several locations throughout Kansas and Missouri.

Roger was a member of Christ Point Church where he loved being a part of the praise and worship team. He loved his church family, smoking meats, his cattle, and his family. Roger never met a stranger (our social butterfly) and truly saw the best in others. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Roger is survived by his wife of 18 wonderful years, Peggy Ann Patterson-Wormington; Mother, Ruth Fisher of Wichita, KS; three sons, James (Deidre) Wormington of Jefferson City, MO; Alan (Ileen) Hoekman of Los Angeles, CA; Andrew (Ashley) Patterson of Carthage, MO; daughters, Brandi (Joseph) Scroggins of Battlefield, MO; Jessica (Derek) Johnson of Riverton, KS; Olivia Patterson (Kyle Brown) of Blue Springs, MO; thirteen grandchildren; Sophia, Kaleb, and Landon Wormington of Jefferson, MO; Zack, Logan, and Johnny Hoekman of Los Angeles, CA; Tayler, Ella Rae, and Henry Scroggins of Battlefield, MO; Bryce, Chloe, and Kinley Johnson of Riverton, KS; Knox Patterson of Carthage, MO. Additional survivors are sisters, brothers, several nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. Roger is preceded in death by his father, Roy Wormington; and one brother, JR Wormington.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at Christ Point Church, Galena, KS. Pastor Josh Pennington will officiate. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-7:00 p.m., at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Burial will follow at a later date in the Springfield Veterans Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Christ Point Church in memory of Roger. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
