Jean Mathern

Jean Arlene Mathern, 95, Carthage, Missouri a beacon of love and spirited joy, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage. She was born on January 18, 1930, in Lone Tree, Iowa, the daughter of the late Oliver Harrison Strong and Sarah Bethier (George) Strong.

Jean's early years were spent in the close-knit community of Lone Tree, where she graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1948. Her pursuit of knowledge and desire to help others led her to Franklin Tech, where she earned her LPN Degree. Jean's career as a Licensed Practical Nurse at St. John's Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, was marked by her caring nature and dedication to her patients. Her work on the family farm showcased her love for animals and the simple pleasures of rural life.








She built a life defined by resilience and an unwavering commitment to her farm and animals. Jean was a force of nature known for her strong will and self-reliance. She navigated life's challenges with grace and determination. Her fiercely independent spirit was an inspiration to many. She managed the demands of both farming and nursing with an unmatched work ethic.

Survivors include her loving son, Daniel Mathern (wife Cher Jiang); her cherished granddaughter, Brittany Carnagey (husband Erin); her adored great-grandchildren, Paizlee and Birklynn Carnagey; her great-great-nephew, Beckett Eby; and many extended family members and friends, who will miss her dearly. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nicole Marie Mathern Gibson; her infant son, Mark David Mathern; her grandson, Braden Mathern; and two brothers, Lester Leroy “Roy” Strong and Dale Strong.








Beyond her strength, she was incredibly giving. She gave regularly to local churches, animal shelters, and organizations. She believed in community, family, and friendship. She dedicated much of her life to supporting those around her. Her passions were rooted in love, fun spirit, and healing. She farmed, tended to her garden, and cared for animals, big and small. She also enjoyed shopping and fine cuisine with friends and family by day and by night was a skilled country dancer. Her legacy lives on in the fields she tended and the lives she touched. She will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Private family services and burial will be held. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.
