Edna Marie Helton was born in Oakland, California on December 6, 1914 to Forrest and Flora Hoppock. She was one of six children. In her time she saw America fall in love with the automobile; become electrified; win two World Wars and add two new states.
In her personal life, she came to the Joplin area in 1926, attending school in Joplin. She fell in love with Joplin and never wished to leave. In 1933, she met Herbert Merrill Helton and they were married on July 30, 1934. They were blessed with a son, Donald Edwin, the following June. The Depression and the second World War were life defining events for her as the young family struggled economically, especially when Herb had to go off to war. The war ended and then there was a time of prosperity.
In 1967, she went to work at the Missouri Regional Diagnostic Clinic, which she enjoyed greatly and made many lifelong friends. The kids at the clinic always called her Grandma, a precursor to later events.
In 1969, her husband sadly parted from her in death. Yet, this event would lead Donald to wed Donna Sue Elsten and bring into her life two grandchildren, Dean Edwin and Darin Wayne.
In 1980, she retired from the clinic which allowed her to travel and enjoy many friends and family that had been scattered over these United States. She loved playing for churches and was an accomplished pianist, though never professionally. She dedicated her life to God and was beloved by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Marion, Alvin, Martin; her mother, Flora; her father, Forrest; sisters, Edith and Ruth; husband, Herbert Merrill; and her son, Donald Edwin.
She is survived by daughter-in-law, Donna; grandsons, Dean and Darin; granddaughter-in-law, Stephanie; great granddaughter, Natalie; as well as may more extended family members and many friends.
At the request of Edna, memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Humane Society.
The family is planning a visitation on Wednesday from 5-6:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
