Erik Musgrove

Erik Ryan Musgrove, age 41, passed away Friday April 29, at his home in Lamar. 

Erik was born in Oakland California, December 8 1974 to Shelly Ann (Strong) Ryan. He was a welder by trade and had worked locally for Thorco Industries. 

He is survived by his Children Zachary and Erika Musgrove and a grandson Mason all from Kansas, His mother Shelley Ryan of Lamar, a brother Scott Musgrove of Springfield, MO, and a sister Misty Marti and Her husband Andy, of Lamar, and many nieces and nephews.


Neil Felker

Neil Felker, age 73, Carl Junction, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2016 at his home after an illness.

Neil was born October 8, 1942 in Joplin to the late Udah K. Felker and Maud Ella Patterson Felker and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.

He worked at the former Grandpa's store on North Main for over 20 years and at the Botany Shop for several years. He then moved to Illinois when he took a job with Missouri American Water Company, only to move back to Joplin with the company and retire in 2004.

Neil enjoyed collecting guns and fishing equipment and fished any chance he got. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Keith Felker, Carterville; a daughter, Stacey Landes and husband Chris, Carl Junction; one sister, Janice Booe, Boise, Idaho; a brother, Mike Felker, Carl Junction; three grandchildren, Kyleigh Felker, Josh Landes, Trent Landes; and two great grandchildren, Avery and Abby.

Services are planned for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Rev. Bob Simon will officiate. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Felker, Dusty Felker, Josh Landes, Trent Landes, Tom Berry and Ken Pierce. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Booe and John Booe. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Parker Mortuary.

Joyce Eaton

One of God’s angels Thelma “Joyce” Eaton age 73, passed away at home surrounded by her family. 

She was born July 26, 1942 to John Carroll Jones and Thelma Elizabeth Trotter Jones in San Antonio, Texas. She married Ross Eaton September 18, 1981. Joyce retired from Levolor Company, Greensboro, NC in 1996. She and Ross moved to Carthage, MO, and she went to work for USA Tank Storage Systems retiring in 2012. 

She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Melissa Helton, of Gilmer, TX, Merinda House, of Alba, TX, and Tonya Bloomhuff of Coal Valley, IL. Sister Barbara Bodecker of Dallas, TX, and Brother Ronnie Jones of Longview, TX. Seven Grandchildren and Four Great Grandchildren. Contributions to the American Cancer Society in her name in care of the Mortuary. 

No services are planned. Arrangements under the care of the Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory.

Jack McClary

Mr. Jack Curtis McClary, 50, of Rogers, Arkansas, departed this life on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at his residence after months of declining health.

Jack entered this life on October 13, 1965, in Denver, Colorado, born to the union of James and Carol Sue (McMillion) McClary. He graduated in 1983 from the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, Oklahoma. He resided in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa area before moving to Jane, Missouri in 1986. His employment history included La-Z-Boy in Neosho, Missouri and Specialty Packaging in Bentonville, Arkansas. He enjoyed fishing, basketball, bike riding and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Sue McClary; two sisters, Jana McClary and Janea McClary; and an infant brother, Jansen McClary.

Jack is survived by his father, James McClary of Bella Vista, Arkansas; a sister, Jamie Ellis and husband, Scott, of Rogers, Arkansas; two brothers, James McClary of Chickasha, Oklahoma and John McClary of Jane, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. McClary are 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Pastor Lowell Sartin officiating. Burial will follow in the Jane Cemetery. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Scott Ellis, Jr., Joshua Ellis, James McClary, II, Bill McClary, Adam Lewis, Phillip Lewis, Jacob Lewis and Matthew Lewis. Heather Dunagan

Heather Joleen Dunagan, age 39, of Lamar, passed away Saturday morning, April 16, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.
      Heather was born September 3, 1976 at Humansville, Missouri to Doyle and Suzi (Strong) Dunagan.  She graduated from Lamar High School in 1994 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Missouri Southern in 2012.  Heather had worked for Watco in Pittsburg, Kansas and TAMKO in Lamar.  Most recently, she was a Mental Health Specialist at Pathways in Nevada, Missouri. Heather was an animal-lover who pampered her dogs and cats.  She enjoyed travelling and well-planned cruises topped her list of favorite vacations. Naturally compassionate and generous with her time, Heather’s most gratifying roles were those of caregiver for her mom, enthusiastic farmhand for her dad, and best friend to her fiancée, Mike Trost.   
      Preceding Heather in death were her grandparents, Dean & Mary Strong and Joyce Dunagan McEldowney; four uncles, Larry Strong, Vaughn, Lee, and Robert Dunagan; and several cousins.
      Survivors include parents, Doyle and Suzi Dunagan, fiancée Mike Trost, all of Lamar; her brother, Doyle Dunagan, Jr. and wife, Jennie of Stockton, Missouri; nephews, Ryder & Trace Dunagan; many cousins and a large extended family.
      The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 18th at Daniel Funeral Home.  Private burial will be at a later date.

      Memorial contributions are suggested to the Dunagan family in care of Doyle Dunagan or the funeral home.

Tylor Moore

Tylor B. Moore age 18, of Carterville passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. 

He was born on June 27, 1997 in Joplin, Missouri. Tylor was a landscaper and all around handyman. He was the type of man that would help anyone do whatever they needed done. 

Tylor is survived by his mother, Ericadawn Newman; sister, Haley Jefferies; grandmother, Marilyn Moore; Uncle and Aunt, Chris and Stacy Moore; and cousins, Bailey and Aidyn Moore; all of Carterville; his father, Braden Ash and stepmother, Christina Ash; half- brother, Bo Ash; half- sisters, Jymme Ash and Tierney Ash; grandmother, Bethie Biffany, grandfather, John Biffany, great grandfather, Sarge Howard; Aunt Barb, Aunt Holly and Uncle Mike, along with 3 cousins all of Garfield, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Everette W. Moore, and his uncle William Bruce Hightower; great grandma Ann Howard, and Grandpa Jim Ash. 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Webb City with Pastor Shaun Watson officiating. The family will be present for a visitation on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until service time at the church. Burial will follow in Carterville Cemetery.

Aubrey Price

Aubrey Leroy Price, age 91, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Webb City Health and Rehab, Webb City MO.

Mr Price was born March 14, 1925 on a farm near Welch, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of 13 children born to Hiram and Lucy (Keller) Price. He had lived in Oswego since 1964, moving from Hallowell, KS.

He hauled milk for Kraft Foods and later owned, operated and managed several different service stations in Oswego. He is fondly remembered by many for giving them bubble gum when their parents bought gas from him.

He was once active in the community, coaching Little League baseball, serving on the Little League board, being elected and serving on the Oswego City Council and on the Westside Homes Board of Directors. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oswego, KS.

Aubrey was married to Bonita Goves on September 22, 1948 in Oswego, KSA. She preceded him in death September 20, 2013, just 2 days short of their 65th wedding anniversary. Two sons, Richard Price and Ricky L Price also preceded him in death.

He is survived by a daughter, Kay Glendenning, Oswego, KS; a son, Kenneth Price and wife, Patti, Webb City, MO; four grandchildren, Melissa Torchia and husband, David, Angela Price, Sean and Allison Price. He has four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 3:00 pm, Monday, April 18, 2016 at McKee Cemetery, north of Hallowell, KS. Pastor Bob Conway will officiate.

Viewing hours will be from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, Sunday April 17, 2016 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Oswego, KS.

Robert Raines

Robert Maurice Raines, Jr. age 54, of Lamar, Missouri, died unexpectedly at his home, Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

Robert was born July 1, 1961 at Jefferson City, Missouri to Robert Maurice Raines Sr. and Loretta Louise (Bemboom) Raines. He attended Stockton High School and was a driver for Murphy Farms for 13 years. Robert had also worked at the Nevada Walmart before becoming disabled. He loved NASCAR and dirt track racing as well as the outdoors and fishing.

On April 10, 2001 he married Sheryl Brockman at Lamar, Missouri and she survives. Also surviving are his mother, Loretta Penner of Lamar; three sisters, Victoria Mossack, Robin Spencer (Bryan Stewart) of Lamar, and Mary McWilliams of Lamar; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; cousins; sister-in-law Shelly Gibbs (Willie Hastings); and brother-in-law Jeff (Becky) Brockman.

Preceding him in death were his father Robert M. Raines Sr. and a sister Maxine Grayson.

A gathering to celebrate Robert’s life will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, April 17th at Daniel Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until service time Sunday at the funeral home.

Private family burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Samuel Vasquez

Samuel A. Vasquez, 21, Carthage, MO, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Samuel Anibal Vasquez was born October 25, 1994 in Santa Barbara, CA to Anival Vasquez and Silvia Castanon. He graduated from Carthage Senior High School, Class of 2012. Samuel worked as a shift manager at the Braum’s restaurant, Carthage, MO. He was a member of the Nazarene Church, Carthage.

Survivors include his mother, his father, one brother, Edwin Vasquez; and two sisters, Leslie Vasquez and Keila Vasquez.

He was preceded in death by one nephew and one niece.

Randy Bole

Randy John Bole, 63, of Roseland, Kansas, passed away at 9:57 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the University Of Kansas Medical Center. 

He was born on April 20, 1952 at Columbus, Kansas, the son of Tony J. and Ethel Mae (Richard) Bole. He graduated from Southeast High School in 1972. Following graduation, Randy joined the United States Army, serving for 39 years, from 1972 to 2011. He served two tours in Iraq, where he received the Iraq Campaign Medal w/two campaign stars and the Bronze Star Medal. After his career in the military, Randy farmed with his brothers and later worked for Watco Railroad. 

On January 4, 1982, he was united in marriage to Joyce Burns at Miami, Oklahoma. Membership was held in the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church at Scammon, KS; Cherokee American Legion Post #35, where was currently serving as the Post Commander; Eagles Club; Enlisted Association of Kansas Army National Guard; and the Cherokee Gun Club. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping and going to Fisherman’s Paradise on Grand Lake. 

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Bole of the home; a son, Anthony Bole of the home; a daughter, Billie Jo Fenimore of Pittsburg; three brothers, Brad Bole and his wife, Cindy of rural McCune, Chris Bole and his wife, Susan of rural Cherokee, and Craig Bole and his wife, Tami of Columbus; a sister, Linda Khalifeh and her husband Cyrus of Joplin, MO; a grandson, Caleb Fenimore of Cherokee, KS; and several nieces and nephews. 

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday (April 19) at the Cherokee City Cemetery with Fr. Larry Parker officiating. Military Funeral Honors will be provided by the Kansas Army National Guard. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Brenner Mortuary. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home to sign the register book. Nancy Steward

Nancy C. Steward, age 73, Webb City, passed away at 9:11 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at her home after an illness.

Nancy was born September 10, 1942 in Joplin to the late Doler Allen and Dalpha Kayser Allen and had lived in the Joplin area most of her life.

She worked at the former St. John's Regional Medical Center as the operating room scheduling nurse for 34 years, retiring in 1995. Nancy enjoyed traveling, visiting casinos and playing bingo.

Nancy married Don Steward on July 3, 1995 in Miami, Oklahoma. He survives at the home.

Additional survivors include her children, Jeff Thompson, Lori Berry and Robin McCann; a sister, Opal Richardson; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Memorial services are planned for Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until service time at the mortuary.

Ron McConnell

Ronald Andrew McConnell, 58, Neosho, died April 14, 2016. 

 He was born November 29, 1957 in McAlester, Oklahoma, the son of William Andrew and Margie (Hyatt) McConnell. Ron moved to Neosho from McAlester in 1986. He was the owner and operator of Neosho Gun and Pawn for the last 28 years. He enjoyed going to gun shows and studying his Bible and loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed going to Silver Dollar City with his family. 

 Ron married Angie Mund on August 30, 1986 in Neosho, and she survives. Also surviving are his father, William (Bill) McConnell of McAlester, OK; three children, Andrea Doke and husband, Phillip, Emily Lewis and husband, Harold (Scooter) and Josh McConnell, all of Neosho; four grandchildren, Landon Doke, Lyndsey Doke, Braylon Lewis and Bostyn Lewis; one sister, Debbie Botts of Duncan, OK and two brothers-in-law, Michael Mund and Greg Mund, both of Bonne Terre, MO. Ron is preceded in death by his mother; brother, James Lewis McConnell and grandson, Beckham Lewis.

Tina Henson

Tina Marie Henson, 57, Sarcoxie, Missouri formerly of Carthage, Missouri departed this life on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Sarcoxie Nursing Center surrounded by her loving family.

Tina entered this life on January 30, 1959 in Carthage, Missouri to the union of Ralph D. and Dorcas A. (Youngblood) Myers. She attended Carthage Schools and was a lifelong area resident. Tina was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her family dearly. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting and spending time with her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Dorcas Crum; her grandparents; one brother, Danny Myers and one sister, Tisha Rose Crum.

Tina is survived by her daughters, Crystal Lambeth and husband Scott of Sarcoxie, Missouri and Teresa Palumbo and husband Steven of Mountain Grove, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Taylor Lambeth, Garrett Lambeth, Rylee Lambeth, Zachary Henson, Lectah Palumbo, Faith Palumbo and Gracie Palumbo; one brother, John Crum and wife Debra of Bentonville, Arkansas; her nephew and niece; as well a host of other family and friends.

Russell Smith

Russell L. Smith, 75, of Reeds passed away at 11:34 p.m. Wednesday April 13, 2016 at his residence. Russell was born July 6, 1940 in Carthage. He was the son of Clarence Smith and Thelma Smith. Russell was a lifetime resident of Carthage. He was self- employed having his own Lawn Care Business for several years. Russell was an honest, hardworking family man.

Russell was united in marriage to Lola Smith on April 22, 1963 in Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2014. Russell is survived by one son, Michael Smith, Sr. of Granby, MO, one daughter Peggy Hopper and her husband Jerry of Granby, MO, one brother Jay Smith of Sarcoxie, MO, three sisters Lorene Hendricks and her husband Buddy, Della Neel and Nancy Brooks and her husband all of Carthage. Four grandchildren, Jeremy, Jamie, Eric and Starlet and 7 great grandchildren. Russell was preceded in death by one grandson Michael Smith, Jr, 5 brothers Bobby, Manuel, Daniel, Robert and Roy Smith and one sister Linda Smith.

Brenda Garvin

Former Seneca resident Dr. Brenda Davidson Gavin, 67, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died suddenly March 17, 2016. A nationally recognized venture capitalist and Philadelphia business leader, Brenda nurtured many new life science companies and mentored an extraordinary number of both young and established colleagues. Struck down by a catastrophic cerebral hemorrhage, Brenda continued to help others to the end, providing gift-of-life donations to four organ recipients.

Brenda was born April 21, 1948 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to William J. (Bill) Davidson and Erma Dee (Nolan) Davidson, who owned and operated the Otasco store in Seneca for many years. Brenda grew up in Tulsa, OK and Springfield and Seneca, MO. She was a 1966 graduate of Seneca High School. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree at Baylor University in 1970 she worked as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania and for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Brenda returned to Missouri in 1973 to train in veterinary medicine and was awarded her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Missouri in 1977.

Immediately after vet school graduation Brenda joined the two-year Epidemic Intelligence Service program at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA. As a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, she was a member of the CDC team that identified the major source of the bacterium that resulted in 39 cases (3 deaths) of Legionnaire's Disease at Indiana University.
In 1979 Brenda entered the Master of Business Administration program at the University of Texas-San Antonio where she first heard of and was intrigued by the emerging field of venture capital. After earning her MBA in 1981 she joined International Minerals and Chemical Corporation in Terre Haute, IN and later moved to Chicago to manage IMC's venture capital investments and business development activities.

Brenda returned to Philadelphia in 1986 as Director of Business Development for SmithKlineBeecham Animal Health Products. She remained with SmithKline until 2002, moving into the firm's venture capital division and eventually being named president of its bioscience venture capital subsidiary, S.R.One. 
 
In 2002 Brenda co-founded Quaker Partners, a $700 million venture capital firm based in Philadelphia that focused on health care and biotechnology development in the region and she remained active with the firm until her death. Brenda was one of the earliest and most prominent women in venture capital investing and was a singular mentor to innumerable women in the field. During her career Brenda worked with scientists and physicians to start many new companies and guided numerous new start-ups as a board member and investor. While recognized for her scientific understanding and business acumen, she is best known for the extraordinary breadth of her relationships and connections in the science and business worlds, able to effortlessly connect potential leaders with new companies, investors with new product ideas and both young and seasoned colleagues with new opportunities.

Brenda was an accomplished cook and loved to entertain. An avid reader, she was a longtime member of a small book discussion group made up of friends and business colleagues. She was an active member and leader at Overbook Presbyterian Church, where for 30 years she treasured its diverse membership and superlative music program.

Brenda maintained close relationships with many of her Seneca High classmates and was excited by the prospect of seeing them at the Class of '66 50-year reunion scheduled for this coming summer.
Brenda married Laurence (Larry) Gavin, M.D., an emergency medicine (ER) physician, on May 30, 1987 in Philadelphia, and he survives. Additional survivors are their son, Zachary William Gavin of Philadelphia, her mother Erma Davidson Trogdon and her sister, Glenna Davidson Murdock (husband Jim), both of Loveland CO. Her father, William (Bill) Davidson predeceased her in 1984.
On March 25, 2016 the family received friends at Chadwick-McKinney Funeral Home, Ardmore, PA. A memorial service took place at Overbook Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia on Saturday, March 26, 2016. Cremation has been conducted.

Martha Newton

Martha V. (Turner) Newton, age 88, passed away on April 13, 2016, at her home.

Martha was born on June 6, 1927 in Carthage, Mo., the daughter of the late H.O. Patrick and Myrtle (Kerr) Patrick. She graduated from Duenweg, High School. She worked as a machine operator for several manufacturing plants, and she worked fifteen years for LA-Z-Boy in Neosho, Mo. She was a member of Granby Christian Church and she was attending the Diamond Christian Church.

She married Paul E. Turner on March of 1946, and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1988. She then married Woodrow “Newt” Newton. They moved to California in 1990, moving back to Granby in 2010. Together they enjoyed traveling and dancing.

She is survived by one son, Bill Turner, Neosho; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, by three brothers, William Patrick, Rue Patrick, and H.O. Patrick, Jr.; and four sisters, Betty January, Sarah Frances Hasselbring, Mary Patrick, and Louella Patrick.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Stone Cemetery. Mike Wardlow, Minister will officiate. The family will receive friends 3-4 p.m. Sunday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Salvation Army in care of the mortuary.

Gene Terry

Gene L. Terry, 91 of Carthage, MO passed away April 13, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. 

Gene was born January 6, 1925 in Johns Town, Nebraska to Clyde Everett Terry and Mary Hayes. Gene was a tax accountant and owned and operated Terry Accountant and Tax Service for several years. He attended Cross Roads Baptist church and was a very devoted Christian. Gene served in the United States Army and was in the Battle of the Bulge in the 106th Infantry division, May 22, 1943 to December 1944. 

Gene was united in marriage to Wilma Jeanne Snider December 24, 1952 in Aurora, MO. she survives. Gene is survived by six sons John Terry (Karol) of Carthage, MO, Stephen Terry (Charretta) of Bonney Lake, WA. Philip Terry (Anita) of Heber Springs, AR., Mark Terry (Lisa) of Lafayette, LA., Thomas Terry (Cara) of Carthage, MO., and Joel Terry (Lori) of Carthage, MO., one brother Everett Terry of Denver, one sister Martha Durham of Bakersfield, MO., twenty six grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren. Gene is preceded in death by his parent’s one brother and one sister. 

Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday April 18, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday April 17, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Park Cemetery Carthage, MO. Online condolences can be made at www.ulmerfh.com.

Cheryl Teeters

Dr. Cheryl E. Teeters, 69, of La Russell, Missouri, died on April 9, 2016 at her home after a brief battle with cancer.

Dr. Teeters was born on February 24, 1947 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to the late Howard and Annalea Burkett Teeters. Mother, Annalea, was a La Russell native and thoughout the years many family trips were made to the Burkett grandparents’ family farm.

Cheryl’s father was a teacher and her childhood was spent in the “boot heel” of the state living in small towns like Lutesville, Hayti and Bernie. She graduated from Caruthersville High School in 1965. An outstanding student, her lifelong love of the great outdoors was born after a trip to the national Senior Girl Scout Roundup in Button Bay, Vermont in 1962. She was the only female member and one of the top scorers of the school’s Rotary Rifleman team. Her adept shooting skills were used throughout her life, hunting and teaching at youth shooting camps.

Cheryl received her B.S. in Education in 1969 from Southeast Missouri State University. In 1984 she obtained her Masters in Recreation and Park Administration from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. She taught and coached high school in St. Louis and later worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation before earning her PhD in Environmental Science at Oklahoma State University in 1994.

Later that year she accepted a teaching position in the Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management program at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, retiring in 2013 with the distinction of professor emeritus. She was a much loved charismatic compassionate educator and inspiring lecturer able to engage her students with her excitement, knowledge and animation. Many summers were spent on backpacking expeditions with colleagues and students.

She was actively involved in many organizations throughout her career. Cheryl was a past officer and member of the Missouri Coalition for Education in the Outdoors, an Outdoor and Hunter Skills Education specialist with the Missouri Department of Conservation and an active member of the Wilderness Education Association.

Cheryl relocated to La Russell upon her retirement to escape the brutal Michigan winters and to take advantage of the longer golf season while being close to cousins, Patricia Guinn and husband Rodney, Fred Whitehead and wife, Terri and Linda Heman and husband, Larry, all of La Russell and a multitude of second, third and “adopted” cousins. An only child, she loved spending time with her Missouri family, whether at family get-togethers or attending Sarcoxie High School sporting events. Her fun loving personality and sense of humor always made family events a special occasion.

A celebration of Dr. Teeters’ life will be held at graveside services at Harvey Cemetery, La Russell, Missouri on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Harvey Cemetery Association or the Joplin Humane Society, c/o Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home.

Leslie Campbell

Leslie Ann (McColgin) Campbell was born April 5, 1919 in Granby, MO. to Leslie H. McColgin and Nelle Langley McColgin. She graduated from Joplin Senior High School and attended Lindenwood College where she received a degree in business. She married John (Jack) Campbell in 1940. He has preceded her in death. During World War II she was active in the USO and Red Cross.

In 1950 the family moved from Joplin, MO. to Pittsburg, KS. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the History Study Club and founding member of Crestwood Country Club. She was also active in Cub Scouts and Brownies. An avid fisherman Leslie Ann appeared on Harold Ensley’s TV show. For over 25 years she was known as “Mother” to the foreign students at PSU. She was honored for her work by the International Students Association, the Chinese Association and the Thai Association. Leslie Ann was also involved with the Jack Campbell Printing Company and continued the business for several years after Jack’s death in 1995.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Jerry Campbell of Naperville, Ill. and Fr. Doug Campbell of Wichita, KS. and one daughter, Julie Mayfield of Tulsa, OK. She is also survived by three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The family is very grateful for the excellent care that their Mother received at Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home in Tulsa, OK. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Simeon’s Foundation, 3701 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Tulsa, OK 74106-9910 or to a charity of choice and contributions may be left at the mortuary. Kenny Smith

Kenneth E. Smith, age 89, of Asbury, Missouri passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016 at his home following an illness.

Kenny was born February 6, 1927 in Asbury, Missouri to the late James and Lena (Michie) Smith.

He was a veteran of the WWII, serving in the United States Navy from May 1944 to June 1946. He graduated in 1944 from Carl Junction High School. He worked as a coal miner for P & M Coal and Clemons Coal, retiring in 1994. Kenny was a member of American Legion Post 13, Joplin, Missouri, Local 14 UMWA, Pittsburg, Kansas, and the Western Twirlers Square Dance Club, Joplin, Missouri. He was a Christian and attended Asbury Baptist Church.

Kenny married Betty Eppright on October 30, 1954 in Miami, Oklahoma, and she survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Cindy Smith, Joplin, Missouri, Kenda Fenix and husband, Bill Jr., Seneca, Missouri, Sherry Boyd, Asbury, Missouri, Brandy Crow and husband, James, Asbury, Missouri; six grandchildren, Brenna Mountford, Billy Fenix, III and wife, Chelsea, Tucker Fenix, Gus Mason, Quenton Crow and Mackenzie Crow; and three great-grandchildren, Phoenix Martin, Zeke Fenix and River Mountford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Debra Sue Smith, one brother, Wilfred Smith, and one sister, Virlene Long.



Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home with Mike Wilkins pastor officiating. Burial will follow at the Webb City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ronald LeRoy Sundquist I, 78, Neosho, MO, passed away April 9, 2016 at his home in rural Neosho.
Ronald LeRoy Sundquist was born March 26, 1938 in St. Paul, MN the son of Alice Sundquist. Ron retired from Thermal Engineering, Joplin. Ron loved his cherished dog Clyde. 
 
Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Sundquist; his wife Patty Sundquist in 1992 and his wife Maxine Sundquist in 2012 and one granddaughter, Amber Sundquist Fleming.

Ron is survived by one son, Ronald L. Sundquist II, Neosho; one daughter Rhonda Sundquist and husband Kevin Johnson, Knightdale, NC; granddaughter, Brianne Sundquist; grandsons, Zachary Long and Dakota Long and three great-grand-children.

Skia Nash

Skia Gabriel Jean Nash, 17, passed away, April 10, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital.

Skia Gabriel Jean Nash was born October 16, 1998 in Vinita, OK. She loved the outdoors and especially fishing, even noodling. She loved music and played the trumpet in the Seneca Band, Baxter Springs Band and Joplin Band. Skia loved her family and had a way about her that made people laugh. 
 
Skia is survived by her mother, Tonia Cox, Grove, OK; her grandparents, Michael Nash and Kathy Nash; great-grandmother, Jean Hundley, Burlington, NC; siblings, Rodney Chowning and wife Jessica, Charleston, SC, Carly Cox, Grove, OK and Samantha, Galena, KS; Aunt and Uncle Sheana and Randy Lankford, Seneca; one niece, Felicity Chowning, Charleston, SC; Cousins, Haley, Caleb, Joey and wife Tabitha and a host of family and friends.

Skia was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Hoyle Hundley.

Gerald Carnes

Gerald Lee Carnes, 69, passed away Tuesday, April 12 in his Webb City home surrounded by family and friends after a 4 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Gerald was born in 1947 to the late Lillian Jarnigan and Eugene Carnes in Carthage, MO. Gerald was a 1965 graduate of Carthage Sr. High School and was drafted into the Army for service in Vietnam. After serving his time in the army, he married Debbie DeWitt in 1967 and they had 3 children, Shawn Carnes of Nashville, TN., Kelli Carnes Burrough of Diamond, MO. and Mandy Carnes Meadows of Carthage, MO.

Additional survivors include a sister, Sue Carnes Ivey of Dallas, TX., and 2 stepchildren, Andrea Fryar Bailey of Carl Junction, MO., Jason Fryar of Pittsburg, KS. and 9 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne McCoy Carnes in 2007, and 2 brothers, Leonard Carnes of Boyertown, PA. and Bob Carnes of Carthage, MO.

Gerald was very involved with the community, serving as president of the Webb City chapter Jaycees, coaching little league baseball and actively sponsoring fundraising events. In addition to being a lifetime machinist, he also owned Carnes Sharpening Service in Webb City.
During the 2011 Joplin Tornado, Gerald volunteered his sharpening services for rescue and cleanup operations in the area.

Since his early teens, music was his passion, playing drums in his first band with his brothers called The Castaways. Gerald went on to play drums for many regional acts in the area. He was one of the founding members of Denny and the Cruisers, actively playing all over the four state area. Gerald made music a huge part of his life, playing drums and owning a karaoke business up until 2012.
Family and friends will host a Celebration of Life this Sunday, 6PM-9PM at The Woodshed - located inside "Cherry's Art Emporium on the Square", 311 S. Main, Carthage, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate to the Carthage Humane Society.

Edna Lee Snow Lett, 83, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of the Neosho area, died April 12, 2016 in Des Moines, following a one year illness. 

 Edna was born Nov. 27, 1932 in Seneca, Missouri, the daughter of Walter G. and Fern W. (Wilson) Snow. She was a homemaker and enjoyed bowling and camping. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. 

Edna married Laurence Lett and he precedes her in death. She is survived by three children, Benda Peterson of Juneo, Alaska; Joyce Barrett and husband, Dennis of Des Moines, Iowa and Rick Lett and wife, Cindy of Phoenix, Arizona; one brother, Don Snow of Seneca; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Laurence Lett, Jr.

Terry Mack Holstine, Sr., 56, of Arma, Kansas, passed away peacefully at 4:31 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at his home. 

He was born August 12, 1959 at Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Mack and Betty (Lucas) Holstine. He attended local schools in Kansas City. 

On December 15, 1992, he was united in marriage to Linda Edwards. She survives at the family home. Mr. Holstine worked for ABS School Supply as the warehouse manager. Survivors include his wife, Linda Holstine of the home; his father, Mack Holstine of Kansas City, KS; a son, Terry Mack Holstine, Jr. of Arma, KS; three daughters, Jessica Ann Marie Holstine of Ft. Scott, KS, Melissa Sue Dawn Doyle of Golden City, MO, and Chelsea Lynae Holstine of Ft. Scott, KS; a step-daughter, Rebekah Kay Amerson of Junction City, KS; three sisters, Diane Coffey of Lamar, MO, Michelle Dawn Cano of Kansas City, KS and Nichole Mausser of Meadville, MO; eleven grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Dorothy Gourley

Dorothy Mae Gourley, age 89 of Galena, Kansas passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Communities of Wildwood, Joplin.

Dorothy was born May 10, 1926 in Junction City, Kansas to the late George W. McClain and Ella Johnson. She was a homemaker for many years but later retired from Citizen State Bank of Galena after 20 years of making sure it was always clean and ready for their customers.

Dorothy married Alfred 'Joe' Gourley and he preceded her in death on December 16, 2013. Additionally she was preceded in death by all of her siblings.

Surviving Dorothy are daughters, Karen Channel and husband, Bill of Joplin, Kathy Porter and husband, Dave of Galena, Mary Jane Mills and husband, Dave of Flat Rock, Michigan; son, Joe Paluskas and wife, Shannon of Coopersville, Michigan; 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild.

Graveside services to honor both Dorothy and Joe will take place on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena.

Edna Green

Edna Marie Green, 84, Neosho, died April 13, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, following a short illness. 

 Edna was born Sept. 7, 1931 in Tekamah, Nebraska and moved to Neosho in 1958 from Kansas City, Missouri. In 1968, she began working for Vanda Beauty Counselor and worked with that organization for nearly 50 years eventually becoming a distributor with customers throughout the United States. She loved to cook, quilt, paint, garden, and collect antiques. She was a member of the Northside Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the WMU. 

Edna married Carl Martin Green on June 24, 1950 in Lebanon, Missouri and he survives. Additional survivors include three sons, Mike Green and wife, Pam of Republic, Missouri; Brent Green and wife, Brenda of Springfield, Missouri; and Bart Green and wife, Catherine of Naperville, Illinois; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Deckard and wife, Dorothy.

Lucille Silvey

Lucille Silvey, 95 years old from Oronogo, Missouri passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016, after complications from pneumonia.

Lucille was born July 20, 1920, in the Pine District in rural Jasper County, Missouri to Malinda and James Turpen. Lucille married Perry Silvey on April 20, 1940, and they were married for 62 years. She retired from Elders Shirt Factory in August 1982. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, looking for arrow heads at the river, doing word searches, gardening and family time. She was a member of the Purcell Baptist church for over 60 years. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Malinda and James Turpen; her husband, Perry Silvey; her sisters, Velma and husband Marion Minkler, Lettie and husband Ora Harry; her brothers, Lawrence and Ira Turpen; her son, Jack Silvey, and her daughter-in-law Bobbie Silvey. 

She is survived by her sons, Bob and wife Jeanette Silvey and Bill Silvey; her daughter-in-law, June Silvey; her sister- in-law, Ella Mae Turpen; her grandchildren, Rick Silvey, Jinger Sentlinger, Shannon Silvey, Rachille Silvey, Rosanna Rion, Cristina Erickson and husband Travis, Kelli Kuennen and husband Scott, Amber Silvey Buell and husband Travis; her great grandchildren, Justin and wife Niki Sentlinger, Jacob and wife Allyssa Sentlinger, Shaffer and wife Arryn King, Logan Watkins, Ashleigh, Alex and Allison Rion, Gracie, Tyler and Colten Erickson, Frederick and Calvin Buell, Avery and Hailey Kuennen and her great-great grandchildren Annleigh, Paige and Trynity Sentlinger and Lincoln Sentlinger,

Corey D. VanWey, 38, passed away Saturday April 9, 2016.

He was born September 29, 1977 in Carthage Missouri. Corey was a lifetime Carthage resident. He worked for 14 years in lawn care and was employed by the Jasper County Special Road District. He enjoyed Hunting and Fishing. 

Corey was united in marriage to Jamie Hurtt July 7, 2012 at Calvary Hill, Carthage, Missouri, she survives. Corey is survived by his wife, one daughter Kayli Jade VanWey of the home and two sons Kyler James VanWey of the home and Zavery Prater of Carthage, MO. His Mother and Stepfather Linda and Joe Davis and his father Dennis Charles VanWey all of Grove, OK. One Brother Travis VanWey (Amber) of Grove, OK, one sister Mistie Cole (Johnny) of Carthage, two brother-in-law’s Dustin Hurtt and Kenney Hurtt. Grandparents Charles VanWey Sr. of Carthage, Meg Blasé of Fresno, CA. and a Grand-Mother-In-Law Pat Comfort, Joplin, MO. Father-In Law James Hurtt of Moberly, MO and Mother-In-Law Sharon Hurtt of Joplin, MO. also survived by a numerous Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and a host of friends. Corey is preceded in death by his grandparent Leonard and Marjorie Maggard.

Alan Counts, 56, Stella, Missouri, died April 9, 2016 at National Healthcare in Joplin, from complications of a car accident in August, 2015. 

 Alan was born June 2, 1959 in West Plains, Missouri and had moved to the Southwest Missouri area in June of 2006 from St. Louis. He worked as a cook at Indigo Sky Casino and he enjoyed cooking, he was an avid Cardinals Fan and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family. 

 Alan and April (Hill) were married on December 12, 1998 at West Plains and she survives. Additional survivors include two sons, James Counts and wife, Dusti of Edmond, OK and Tyler Counts of the home; one grandson, Jaxon Counts; his father, Jerry Counts of West Plains and three sisters, Deborah Greenfield of St. Louis; Brenda Lewis and husband, Delbert of West Plains and Carmen Wilson of Mt. Home, AR.

Dave Clifton

Glen D. 'Big Dave' Clifton, age 66, Joplin, passed away at 11:51 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2016 at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.

Dave was born May 15, 1949 in Springfield, Missouri to the late Woodrow Clifton and Julia Casteel Clifton and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.

He was a driver for Martin Oil Company and 4-State Trucks for over 40 years. Dave enjoyed his friends; watching old westerns and the company of his puppy, Bam Bam. Dave was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. Family meant everything to Dave and will be missed by all that knew him.

Dave was married to the former Barbara Hurlbert and then married Retha Smith. Retha preceded him in death on March 22, 2010.

Survivors include his children, David Clifton and his wife, Teresa, Joplin, Melissa McAllister and companion, Scott Rosenberg, Joplin, Rebecca Stegall and Travis Lambeth, Joplin, Jennifer Clifton, Joplin; step son, Shawn Smith, Joplin; two brothers, Woodrow Clifton, Lebanon, Tommy Clifton, Joplin; two half brothers, Michael Daily and Danny Daily, both of Joplin; and six grandchildren, Kylea Welton, Jordan McAllister, Peyton McAllister, Kolten Stegall, Kennadi Stegall and Raydan Rosenberg.

Services are planned for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Brother Jimbo Crum will officiate. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Sheldia Todd, 68 passed away April 9, 2016 at her home in Granby, Missouri. S

Sheldia was born in Carthage, MO, May 22, 1947 to J.B. Clayton and Cupy (Patton) Clayton. She was a lifetime Jasper County resident and had worked at Big Smith, Wal-Mart and Fairview Greenhouse. Sheldia was a member of the Salvation Army Church, and a member of the 2590 post Carthage, the ladies Auxiliary and the Salvation Army ladies home league. 

Sheldia was united in marriage to Carroll Todd, November 14, 1970 in Reeds, Missouri, he survives. Sheldia is survived by three daughters Carol Morris (Frank) of Marionville, MO., Janet Vinzant of Carthage, MO and Christy Todd and (Chris Hensley) of Granby, MO. Ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. One sister Francis Clayton of Carthage, MO and one brother Troy Clayton of Cassville, MO. Sheldia is preceded by her parents and one brother Max Clayton. 

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday April 15, 2016 at Fasken Cemetery east of Carthage. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday April 15, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home, prior to the graveside service. Lucy Adams

Lucy Carol Adams, age 57 of Joplin, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016 at Freeman Hospital following an almost 5 year long battle with cancer.

Lucy was born January 11, 1959 in Texarkana, Arkansas to the late Philip Thamert, Sr. and Carol Millis Thamert. After graduating from Carthage High School, Lucy took time to raise her family prior to returning back to M.S.S.U. and receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. She worked for Sebastian Equipment in the accounting department prior to retiring due to health issues. Lucy was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Joplin.

Lucy loved her family and doing anything outdoors including walking and hiking. Lucy loved to collect anything having to do with lighthouses. Before she became ill she was very athletic, she enjoyed playing tennis and golf.

Surviving Lucy include four sons, Blake Adams and wife, Samantha of Carl Junction, Jake Adams and wife, Rebecca of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Luke and Levi Adams, both of Joplin; daughter, Sarah Adams also of Joplin; grandsons, Tucker, Landen, Kale and Cooper; brother, Philip Thamert, Jr. of Carthage; step mother, Jolynn Thamert of Joplin; brother in-law, Mark Hoskins as well as 2 nieces and 1 nephew.

Other than her parents, Lucy is preceded in death by sisters, Kerri Marston and Angie Hoskins and a stillborn son, Noah.

Funeral services are planned for Wednesday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin, burial to follow at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

LaDon Burnett

LaDon D. Burnett, age 44, of Purdy, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016, in her home.

She was born January 21, 1972, in Rogers, Arkansas, the daughter of Carl and Joyce (Stebens) Burnett, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was a great-nephew, Aaron East.

Surviving are her best friend, Stan Marney of Purdy, Missouri; one brother, Carl Loyd Burnett, Jr. of Neosho, Missouri; two sisters, Iva Lee Humphrey of Joplin, Missouri and Therese Sharp of Rocky Comfort, Missouri; one nephew, Derek Burnett; seven nieces, Crystal, Tabbatha, Vivian, Kylie, Tasha, Savanna and Sidnie; five great nephews and four great nieces.

LaDon graduated from high school in McDonald County. For several years she was a bartender at Double Deuce in Wheaton. Some of her favorite pastimes were fishing, swimming, camping and hunting. She was a free spirited and fun loving woman. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. Put a hammer in her hands and she would outwork the men. She loved the outdoors. When it came to summer time she was a river rat. She loved her family and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Rocky Comfort Cemetery, under direction of McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday in McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton.

Sherry Sappington

Sherry Lou Sappington was born February 12, 1955 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She passed from this life suddenly on April 7, 2016. Sherry spent her youth in Claremore, Oklahoma then she and her very large family moved to Stark City, MO. She later moved to Springfield, MO, where she spent the past 26 years. Sherry graduated from East Newton High School in 1974. She worked her way through college and graduated from Crowder College school of nursing as an LPN in 1984. She was a member of Grant Community Church in Springfield.
Sherry was compassionate and worked fearlessly to advocate for her patients at numerous jobs, from working with the elderly in nursing homes, to taking care of inmates in mental health for the State of Missouri, to in home care. She spent the last months of her life caring for her parents. She was truly gifted in understanding what needed to be done to heal and was always willing to step in when anyone needed help. She was quick witted and funny, opinionated and strong. She could make you laugh and want to smack her at the same time but it was hard to resist the twinkle in her eye and her smile.

She was a volunteer for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate). There are children who have beautiful lives with loving families because she wouldn’t give up on doing the right thing.
Sherry leaves behind two fabulous children, Emily Sappington and Duncan Sappington and one grandson, Julian Garnica-Sappington of Springfield, MO. She loved them more fiercely than anything. They were her heart, her greatest joy. Also, Tyler Caldwell of Phoenix, AZ, whom Sherry loved and considered one of her own.

She is survived by her children and grandson, two brothers, Ralph Sappington, Granby, MO, Jerry Sappington, Galveston, TX, five sisters, Tina Banks, Neosho, MO, Kathy Sappington, Neosho, MO, Gina Nicsinger, Overland Park, KS, Dina Campbell, Stark City, MO, and Mary Sappington, Neosho, MO, many nephews, nieces, loving friends and family. She will be missed deeply.
Sherry was proceeded in death by her parents, Bill and Jessie Sappington, brother, Richard Sappington and sister, Brenda Sappington.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled at Unity of Springfield, MO on April 23, 2016 at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to CASA of Springfield.

Melinda Stine

Melinda Sue Coberley Stine age 56, succumbed to her battle with colon cancer on Saturday April 9, 2016. 

Melinda- known as me and or Sue to her family and friends was loving and much loved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all.
Melinda was born on November 13, 1959 to Orville “Jim” and Ruby “Weston” Coberley.
Melinda grew up in Joplin and attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a graduate of Sunnydale Adventist Academy in Centralia, Missouri. She loved the Lord and was spending time with Him daily in study and prayer. 

Melinda loved spending time with her grandbabies Harley and Jase, who called her Ga, and with her family and friends. Many weekends you could find her spending time with Todd, the love of her life, taking road trips in their convertible while looking for bargains at rummage sales. Mel also enjoyed reading and making Afghans for family and friends. 

Melinda was known for always thinking of others and putting their need and wants before her own. She was a hippie at heart and loved bright colors, unique fashions, flip flops and being barefoot.
She worked tirelessly at a variety of jobs to support her family, as her children grew up. At the time of her death she was employed by KCPL Company of Kansas City, MO. She was very excited and proud when in 2012 she learned that she had been awarded the Celebrity Staff/ C and A Industries Employee of the year award. 

She will be remembered for her love, laughter, strength, and fun loving spirt. She could be gentle as a lamb and fierce as a lion. She was always there a lend a hand, ear or a comforting hug.
 
She was loved unconditionally and is survived by Todd Smith of the home. She is also survived by her children James Standley, and Gwendalyn Haase, husband Chris, grandbabies Harley and Jase. Her parents Orville “Jim” and Ruby Coberley, one brother Mike Coberley and wife Edith, one sister Amy Hoagland and husband Terry, and her nieces and nephews Jennifer and Husband James, Brandon, Ben, and Holley, as well as a great nephew and niece. All of Joplin. And many family and friends. 

She said may times “No crying at my funeral, and no hanging around at my grave! Celebrate me with laughter, love a good party. 

She was an advocate for colon cancer awareness and could often be heard telling us all, “don’t forget to check your BUM”. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday April 16, 2016 at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery Joplin, Mo. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 pm Friday at the Mortuary. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society in care of the Mortuary.

Joe Plummer

Joe A. Plummer, 81, Carthage, MO, passed away Sunday evening, April 10, 2016 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO. Joe Arthur Plummer was born November 24, 1934 in Carthage, MO to the late John Henry Plummer and Bessie (Sidenstricker) Plummer. Joe was a graduate of Carthage High School, Class of 1952. He worked as a plasterer for Greenwood Bros Plastering Company. Joe married Shirley Lindley on November 24, 1955 in Diamond, MO; she survives. He was a member of the Oil of Joy Ministries, Diamond, MO.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Janis Lynn Updegraff (husband Larry), Carthage, MO; one son, William Wayne Plummer (wife Debbie), Joplin, MO; four sisters, Lois Jewel Fenimore, Carthage, MO, Thelma Bass, Carthage, MO, Virginia Darlene Wilson, Carthage, MO, and Ailene Dewelt, Joplin, MO; seven grandchildren, Angelia Ruiz, Melissa Ruiz, Alyssa Plummer, Tyler Dobbins, Kristie Goade, Stacie Brane, and Amanda Updegraff; and seven great grandchildren, Alyc Ruiz, Lexi Plummer, Layton Dobbins, Jacob Goade, Akaysha Mitchell, Gabbi Brane, and Kaden Brane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Henry Ross Plummer, and Lawrence Dean Plummer.

Bob Hays

Robert J. Hays II, age 36, Parkville, Missouri, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016 at his home after a sudden illness.

Bob was born April 14, 1979 in Joplin to Robert Hays and Connie Rakes Hays and had lived in the Kansas City area a short time, moving from Joplin.

He worked as a sous chef for several years at Crabby's in Joplin and Rogers, Arkansas; Wilder's Restaurant in Joplin, Anton's, Kansas City, and most recent, executive chef at Barrel 31, Kansas City.

Bob is survived by his wife, Kathryn; a son, Skyler Paul Hays; his parents, Robert and Connie Hays, Carl Junction; two brothers, Chad Andrew Hays, Webb City, Gabriel Aaron Hays, Carl Junction; his maternal grandmother, Leila Rakes, Carl Junction; mother-in-law, Sue Beth Sharp, Grove, OK; sister-in-law, Amanda Moutos and her husband, Christopher, Warrensburg, MO; brother-in-law, Andrew Culbertson, Grove; and granny, Susan Sharp, Grove.

A celebration of life is planned for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Joplin.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial account has been established for Kathryn Culbertson Hays at Great Southern Bank, Joplin.

Susan Penn

Susan Jane Penn, 66, of Noel, Missouri, departed this life on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at the Golden Living Center in Anderson, Missouri, after months of declining health.

Susan entered this life on March 14, 1950, in Noel, Missouri, daughter of the late Floyd and Nellie (Cash) Penn. She was a lifelong resident of Noel, Missouri. She graduated 2nd in her class from Crowder College School of Nursing in 1992. She was a traveling RN for several years before beginning her employment with Golden Living Center. She enjoyed singing, playing the piano and spending time on her front porch. She was a member of Noel Faith Tabernacle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Floyd Albert Penn. 

Susan is survived by her three children, Larissa Tuell and husband, Kenny, of Noel, Missouri, Scott Goodwin of Anderson, Missouri and Greg Goodwin of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Andrew Tuell, Brian Goodwin, Holly Goodwin and Alex Tuell; two brothers, Stephen Penn and wife, Patricia, of Rogers, Arkansas and Samuel Penn, Sr. and wife, Kathy, of Pineville, Missouri; a sister, Sharon Nelson of Rogers, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Noel Cemetery in Noel, Missouri with Rev. Brent Beauford officiating. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Greg Goodwin, Kenny Tuell, Robert Nelson, Lloyd Penn, David Penn, Darrell Burnett and G.W. Tompkins. Roy Derfelt

Roy Leon Derfelt, age 93, a well-known businessman, passed from this life into the presence of his Lord and Savior at 8:10 pm, Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Communities of the Wildwood, Joplin, MO.

Mr. Derfelt was born August 17, 1922 in Galena, KS. He was the youngest of four children born to John Olin and Charlotta Clarice (Bennett) Derfelt. He was a lifetime resident of Galena.

He graduated from Galena High School with the Class of 1941. He met the love of his life after he was admitted to St John’s Hospital, Joplin, MO with pneumonia, H. Virginia Tyler was his student nurse. Dec 7, 1941 was an even more infamous day because it was their first date. They were married in a private ceremony on March 16, 1943 in Galena KS during Virginia’s lunch break from the hospital.

Roy was leaving Galena to serve in the US Army Air Corp during World War II. He was in combat on a small island in the Pacific and witnessed the surrender of the Japanese on that air strip.

Roy returned home to work at Eagle Picher smelter in Galena before getting a job at Spencer Chemical Co. While working there, he began studying at Kansas Teachers College in Pittsburg. He transferred to the Kansas City School of Mortuary Science Kansas City KS.

In 1951, he joined his father as a funeral director at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS, a profession he continued to practice well into his 80’s. He eventually became sole owner of the business. It was in 1977, he purchased a funeral home in Baxter Springs, KS. He provided ambulance service to the communities and the surrounding area.
He served on the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts for several years.

He was senior deacon at First Baptist Church Galena where he joined in 1933 at the age of 9. He held countless offices at the church including Sunday School teacher and treasurer of the church, In the 1970’s he was church camp director for the KOAM Youth Encampment. For several years, he served on the Ministers Benefit Committee with the BMA of America. He was a Gideon in the Cherokee County camp. He was also a retired member of the Galena Fire Dept. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge for 70 years as well as several other masonic organizations. Other organizations he had held membership were the VFW, the American Legion, the Galena Chamber of Commerce, the Lions club (where he was a charter member), Kansas Funeral Directors Association and the Galena Mining and Historical museum.

He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia. Two sons, John Derfelt (wife, Imogene), Joplin, MO, Jerry Derfelt (wife, Peggy), Galena; two daughters, Molly Hilton, Springfield, MO, and Mary Vogel (husband, Fred), Galena; 14 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, and large number of nieces, nephews, and friends too close to be called a friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John M Derfelt, two sisters, Una Mooney and Frieda Paxson, one son in law, Gary Hilton and one daughter in law, Frankie Derfelt.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm, Sunday, April 10, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Galena, KS. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery Galena, KS.

Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to either First Baptist Church or the Gideon’s in care of the funeral home.

Paul Cox

Paul Willis Cox, 87, of Joplin, MO, died April 6, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO.

Born Oct. 15, 1928, in Joplin, he was the son of Homer and Pauline Davis Cox. He lived most of his life in Joplin, MO and Pittsburg, KS. He married the love of his life, Modena Lee Melton, on April 7, 1951. By profession he was a music teacher beginning his teaching career at Metz, MO.

Paul was drafted into the U. S. Army during the Korean War serving in the band at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. After discharge from the military he returned to teaching serving both elementary and junior high schools as band teacher in Pittsburg, KS. Later in his teaching career he became a guidance counselor at the Pittsburg Middle School.

Paul served Trinity Baptist Church, Pittsburg, KS as a deacon and as the music director for twenty years. Later, he attended South Broadway Baptist Church before retiring and moving back to Joplin. In Joplin, Paul joined with Fellowship Baptist Church where he taught a senior adult Sunday School class for many years and played his clarinet in the church band.

Paul loved attending Missouri Southern State University basketball games with his brother, playing ping-pong, hitting the greens at the golf course and visiting with his friends. His fellow school teachers in Pittsburg, KS honored Paul for his love of golf by holding an annual P. Cox Golf Tournament for several years.

Paul’s love for music can be seen today in the life of many of his former students and even his family members as they carry-on his musical traditions. His constant encouragement is often mentioned by former students. Many claim he was their best teacher. A few have said if it wasn’t for him, they would have quit school. Most of his children and grandchildren play musical instruments and one is planning to major in music when they attend college. He is attracted to the idea of becoming a teacher like his grandfather. Paul’s lasting musical legacy is summed up best in Mr. Cox’s Opus Facebook page where several have left positive comments. He will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Modena Lee Cox and a grand-daughter, Leslie Denise Snapp.

Survivors include a brother, Robert Cox of Joplin; two daughters, Diane Snapp (Lynn) of Joplin and Paula Shepherd (Larry) of Bella Vista, AR; son Rob Cox (Shelly) of Cheyenne, WY; seven grandchildren, Alisa Watts (Josh), Jeremy Snapp, Gabe Shepherd (Amanda), Candace Lee (Matt), Mikaela Cox, Bryce Cox, Jamerra Cox; eight great-grandchildren, Kyle Watts (Michelle), Khanin Watts, Kameron Watts, Kayla Watts, Ella Shepherd, Aaron Lee, Sarah Lee and Joseph Lee; and one great-great-grandson, Maddox Watts.

Funeral services for Mr. Cox are 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Joplin, Missouri. Burial will follow in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4:00 p.m. at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary.
