Shelby Shumaker

(From Parker Mortuary)

Shelby Layne Shumaker, age 22, Joplin, passed away at 7:39 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at her home after a sudden illness.

Shelby was born November 26, 1993 in Joplin and was a lifetime resident.

From the time Shelby entered this world she did it at her own pace.

In a rush and in the wee hours of the morning, surprising her waiting family.

In a rush to talk and walk a social butterfly was emerging. Spirited and stubborn with a flare for independence.

When Kelsey was born Shelby took this as an opportunity. She had a real life baby doll to mother over and protect even as they grew. Though the struggle of makeup and clothes during their teenage years kept it a lively household. Shelby always had Kelsey’s back. The love of sisters is unwavering.

Shelby loved choir and cheer leading and friends. Always Shelby was having friends over and staying at friend’s homes. If you were lucky enough to be considered a friend to her you had her loyalty until the end.

Shelby loved her family. Plain and simple. Being an aunt is a role Shelby enjoyed immensely spending time with Rylee and Eirik was always a highlight of her day.

Shelby had an amazing son. Steven took after her spirited ways. Though nervous about being a young mother, she was determined to give her son a good life. Working to provide for him and better both their lives.

Shelby is survived by her mother and stepfather, Tammy and Steve Baker, Joplin; her son, Steven James; father, James Shumaker; one brother, Colton Shumaker, Webb City; one sister, Kelsey Shumaker, Granby; stepbrother, Jason Baker, Joplin; grandmother, Peggy Baker, Joplin; grandfather, Bob Pearish, Oronogo; and aunts and uncles, Kimberly Pearish, Bobby Pearish, Robin Pendergraft and Bertha Mae McGowin.
