Carol Sutherland

Carol Rae (Gwinn) Sutherland, age 79 of Diamond, Mo., went to her Lord and Savior on April 2, 2016, after a brief illness at Freeman West Hospital.

Carol was born in Beckley, West Virginia on September 22, 1936 to Golda Belle Gwinn and Alfred Ray Gwinn. She grew up and attended Woodrow Wilson High School where she exceled academically, winning the State of West Virginia mathematics competition her senior year.
She attended Radford College in Radford, Va. From 1954-1956 and the Concord University in Athens West Virginia graduating in 1958. While at Concord Carol met her husband, Leland ‘Bob’ Sutherland and they were married January 31, 1958. Carol and Bob were married forty-three years, with Bob preceding her in death on September 12, 2001.

Carol and Bob had two children Jefferey Alan Sutherland of Milford, Oh., and Susan Elaine Sutherland Wilson of Diamond, Mo., and a foster son, James Schneider, of Terre Haute, In.
Carol worked as a librarian for Vigo County in Terre Haute In. for twenty-five years. She loved to sew, cook, enjoyed theatre, and her grandchildren. She served her Lord by volunteering her time and possessions.

Carol relocated to Diamond, Mo. In 2005 to be closer to her daughter and granddaughters. She was an active church and staff member at Christ Community United Methodist Church of Joplin. Carol also volunteered and was very active with Avalon Hospice of Joplin.

Survivors include her son Jefferey Sutherland; daughter Susan Wilson and husband Kevin; foster son, James Schneider; brothers, George Gwinn and wife Lita, Fairfax, Va., and David Gwinn and wife Korky, Lexinton, Ky.; grandsons, P.J. Sutherland, Milford, Oh., and Tyler Sutherland, Salt Lake City, Utah; and granddaughters, Megan Wilson and Heather Wilson, both of Diamond, Mo. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Pamela Sutherland.

Funeral services will be Held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Christ Community United Methodist Church. Pastor Bob Dart will officiate. The visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday at New Harmony Cemetery, Terre Haute, In.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity in Carol’s honor.
