Jeff was born on May 21, 1952, in Wichita, Kansas, to Mary Clouse. As a baby, he was adopted by Carlos and Betty Crabb of McPherson, Kansas.

On August 16, 1975, he married the love of his life, Linda Ekdahl, at College Heights Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. She survives him.
