(From Parker Mortuary)Shirley D. Murphey, age 87 of Joplin, Missouri, entered heaven’s gates on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at Joplin Gardens following a short illness. Shirley was born July 13, 1938 in La Due, Missouri to the late Roy and Mary (Varner) Briggs.
Graduating in 1956 from Clinton Missouri High School, Shirley entered Kansas City Junior College to get her certification in secretarial work. Soon after, Shirley married Joseph H. Murphey, Sr. on August 13, 1957 in La Due and began a long journey together. Though only worked as a secretary for just a few years, Shirley was a homemaker for several years while raising her kids and taking care of household needs. Shirley and Joseph were long-time members of Fellowship Baptist Church of Joplin where they served in various places throughout the years.
Those left to mourn her passing include her husband, Joseph of Joplin; sons, Joseph H. Murphey, Jr. of Lenexa, Kansas and Brian Murphey of Joplin; seven grandchildren; brothers, Shelby Briggs (Marilyn) of Clinton, Clyde Briggs (Donna) of Clinton; sisters, Bonnie Winters and Esther Singer, both of Clinton; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Other than her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Watkins; brothers, Uel, Glenn, Lester and Jim Briggs; and a sister, Wilma McKeaigg.
Funeral services are planned for Friday, September 26, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church of Joplin with visitation starting at 1:30 up to service time. Burial will take place on Saturday, September 27th at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
