Lena Steele

Mrs. Lena Nora (Carr) Steele, 96, of Webb City, Missouri, departed this life on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2015, at St. Luke’s Care Center in Carthage, Missouri, after a recent decline in health.

Lena entered this life on June 8, 1919, in rural Newton County Missouri in the Marion Township (Pepsin area) the youngest of six children born to the late Hugh Elbert and Nora Jane (Powers) Carr. She was a lifelong resident of Webb City, Missouri and a 1937 graduate of Webb City High School. On January 9, 1942, in Webb City, she was united in marriage to Richard W. Steele and to this union three children were born. Throughout her life she was a hardworking and devoted homemaker. She was a sixty-three year member of Central United Methodist Church in Webb City, serving as church secretary for several of those years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Lena enjoyed gardening, spending time in her kitchen, attending church activities, working crossword puzzles and was a talented seamstress. She lived life by the Golden Rule and was thoughtful and kind to everyone she encountered, always seeing the greatness in each individual. She always conducted herself gracefully and tried to set a good example for her family members, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of sixty years, Richard W. Steele; five siblings, Crystal Greninger, Ruby Martin Hilton and Warren, Harvey and Homer Carr.

Lena is survived by her three children, James Steele of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Diana Spencer and husband, Richard, of Golden, Missouri and Mary Wilson also of Lee’s Summit; six grandchildren, Symonne, Dax, Travis, Chad, Heather and Holly; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Steele are 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2015, in the Chapel of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home with Rev. Clint Lambeth officiating. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Joe Porras, Travis Spencer, Dax Wilson, Jim Steele, Chad Wilson, Jason Barnes, Virgil Carr, Richard Spencer and Doug Corner. Hazel Wright

Mrs. Hazel Mae Wright, 86, of Carterville, Missouri, passed away, Thursday morning, October 29, 2015, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri, after a sudden illness.

Hazel was born March 23, 1929, in Galena, Kansas, to John Wesley and Serena Mae (Daniels) Russell.

Nothing gave Hazel more pleasure than caring for her family. She was a happy homemaker and wonderful cook. She loved surprising her family with homemade cookies and other treats, especially her famous cherry pudding. She was the heart of her family and the only thing that gives them comfort is knowing that she’s no longer suffering and that she’s currently walking the streets of gold in Heaven.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Otis Wood; and two siblings, Marvin Russell and Iva Jane Hostler.

Hazel married Dale B. Wright on October 14, 1955 and he survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughters, Janie Williams of Joplin, Missouri and Becky Palmer and husband, Ed, of Webb City, Missouri; two grandchildren, Bradley Callen and wife, Amy, of Chino Hills, California and Rachael Durland and husband, Chris, of Joplin; four great grandchildren, Nicholas, Derek, Amelia and Joey; a brother, Otis Wood, Jr. and wife, Ann, of Springfield, Missouri; as well as a host of other family and friends. The family wishes to acknowledge with great appreciation all the palliative care nurses at Freeman Hospital for their compassion and excellent care of Hazel. A special loving thank you to Carthage Health and Rehab employees for their excellent care of Hazel for the past year.

Graveside services are 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2015, at the Carterville Cemetery with Rev. John Wilkins officiating. Jerry Penner

Mr. Jerry Max Penner, 71, of Neck City, Missouri, departed this life on Friday, October 30, 2015, at his residence, after a long illness.

Jerry entered this life on October 10, 1944, in Melrose, New Mexico, one of six children born to the union of the late A.J. and Johnny Rose (Carroll) Penner. He was raised and attended high school in Portales, New Mexico. He has resided in Neck City, Missouri, since the early 1960’s. In 1963 he was drafted into the United States Army serving his country faithfully during Vietnam. After being honorably discharged he returned home to Neck City. Throughout his life he was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid collector. He loved visiting with his friends and neighbors and was known as the “Official Greeter” of Neck City. Jerry was of the Baptist faith.

Jerry is survived by one son, William Penner of Neck City, Missouri; four sisters, Mary Summers and husband, Wayne, of Carthage, Missouri, Ann Hinkle and husband, Mike, of Neck City, Kathy Stanley and husband, Merl, of Webb City and Wanda Long and husband, Mike of Sarcoxie, Missouri; a brother, Jess Penner and wife, Judy, also of Webb City; his beloved dog and companion, Beau; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Penner are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2015, in the Chapel of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Stanley officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Webb City Cemetery. Gretchen Blake

Gretchen Spooner Blake, age 77, formerly of Joplin, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at her home in Marietta, Georgia.

Gretchen was born in Joplin to the late Dorothy Rogers and Philip Spooner. She attended Joplin High School and graduated from Gulf Park College. She earned two undergraduate degrees from Texas Women’s University. She spent most of her life in Dallas, Texas where she raised her four children. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2009.

Gretchen had a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh. She loved color and loved holidays and it showed in her clothes and home decorations.

Gretchen was an avid sewer. For years, she made custom placemats and sold them in craft shows. About 15 years ago, she was introduced to quilting and never turned back. She was an active member of the Allen Quilting Guild and has spent many hours lovingly creating works of art. It was her passion and when she lost the use of her hands, her family helped with the mechanics. Her creativity was immense and was active until the very end. The design of one last quilt was finished the week before she passed.

She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. She loved her car and loved to drive and didn’t mind driving many long hours to see them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Leslie Blake.

She is survived by her brother, Ted Spooner, of Dallas, Texas, her sons, Jim Wiencek of Kennesaw, Georgia and John Wiencek of Tampa, Florida, her daughters, Becky Williams of Marietta, Georgia, and Alice Richardson of Cypress, Texas, and four grandchildren, Samie Williams, Nikki Williams, Blake Richardson and Kyle Richardson.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Webb City, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers contributions are requested to the ALS association in care of the mortuary.

Janie Browning

Mrs. Marcella Jane “Janie” Sharp Browning, 45, of Rocky Comfort, Missouri, departed this life on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Janie entered this life on March 17, 1970, in Bethpage, Missouri, daughter of Roy and Marcella (Henle) Sharp. She was a lifelong resident of McDonald County Missouri. Besides being a homemaker she also worked as a waitress. She enjoyed dancing, attending ballgames and spending time with her grandchildren. She attended Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church in Rocky Comfort, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Sharp.

Janie is survived by her three children, Joey Martinez and wife, Mallory, of Goodman, Missouri, Latisha Fulford and husband, Dustin, of Rocky Comfort, Missouri and Trevor Browning of Springdale, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Kelcey and Chase Martinez; her mother, Marcella Sharp of Rocky Comfort, Missouri; two brothers, David Sharp and Timothy Sharp both of Rocky Comfort; two sisters, Sara Johnson of Warren, Arkansas and Pearl Gillespie of Neosho, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Sascha Hodgkinson

Mr. Sascha Alexander Hodgkinson, 34, of Pineville, Missouri, departed this life on Saturday, October 24, 2015, in Webb City, Missouri, after a sudden illness.

Sascha entered this life on March 14, 1981, in Ashtabula, Ohio, son of Roy Hodgkinson and Brunhilde (Ludolph) Hodgkinson. He was raised in Pineville, Missouri and attended McDonald County Schools. For the last twenty-five years he has resided in Pineville, Missouri and Lowell, Arkansas. Sascha worked in the field of custodial maintenance throughout his life.

Sascha is survived by his precious two children, Kayleigh and Korbin Hodgkinson; his father, Roy Hodgkinson of Pineville, Missouri; mother, Brunhilde Taylor of Youngstown, Ohio; three sisters, Susan Harris of the state of Virginia, Kathy Hyland and husband, Bill, of Ashtabula, Ohio and Elisabeth Hodgkinson-Mercell and husband, Jared, of Pineville, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Frances Arnold

Frances Irene (Smith) Arnold, 86, of Anderson, Missouri, formerly of Wichita, Kansas and Terral, Oklahoma, peacefully departed this life in her sleep early in the morning of Friday, October 23 at the Golden Living Center in Anderson, Missouri, due to natural causes.

Frances was born July 12, 1929, with a twin brother Jimmie, in Terral, Oklahoma, to the late Napoleon Bonaparte “N.B.” Smith and the late Anna (Hodges) Smith. She was raised in Terral and spent her teenage years in San Diego, California, where the family moved during World War II. She had a lifetime love of horses, and worked as a horse trainer and groomer at a race track in San Diego. She later returned to Terral, Oklahoma, where she met Rollie Andrew Arnold Jr., a truck driver, of Wichita, Kansas. They were married in June of 1950, in Terral, and made their home in Wichita.

Frances was a homemaker and, briefly, a nurse's aide and a clerk at David's department store in Wichita. She enjoyed being with her family in Wichita and Terral. She was proud of her Cherokee and Choctaw heritage, and enjoyed all things western, including music, clothing, cowboy history and culture. She and Rollie purchased a small farm near Nevada, Missouri, where they planned to retire, and spent as much of their free time as possible on the farm making improvements and enjoying the countryside with their youngest son Bruce and her mother Anna. They sold the farm and moved to Winfield, Kansas, when Rollie was diagnosed with lung cancer, and he passed away soon thereafter. Frances and Bruce continued to live in Winfield, before returning to Wichita to live near her other son Kenneth. Frances and Bruce moved to Noel, Missouri, in the early 1990s and later in that decade Frances lived in Bella Vista, Arkansas, with her sister Charlotte, until Charlotte's death, after which she returned to rural McDonald County, Missouri, between Anderson and Pineville.

Frances was skilled with tooling leather, mostly crafting belts, wallets, purses and other personal items, and a saddle. She enjoyed drawing and later became a talented quilt maker. She also enjoyed spending quiet time in nature.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rollie, brothers Charles and Jimmie Smith, sister Charlotte MacArthur, and stepson Rollie Wayne Arnold. She is survived by brothers Lynn (Gwen) of Imperial Beach, California, and Robert (Mary) Smith of Wichita, sons Kenneth (Jan) of Wichita and Bruce of McDonald County, cousins and children of Peggy Thomas and Georgeanna Anderson of Terral and Phil Davis of Bowie, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Funeral Service was held Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at at Tracy Cemetery outside Anderson. Pastor Marilyn O'Brien officiated.

Jimmie Wasson

Mr. Jimmie Ray Wasson, 71, of Anderson, Missouri, departed this life into Glory on Thursday afternoon, October 22, 2015, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri, with his loving family by his side.

Jimmie began his earthly journey on November 8, 1943, in Anderson, Missouri, one of nine children born to the late Carl and Jennie (Wood) Wasson. He was a lifelong resident of Anderson, Missouri and a 1962 graduate of Anderson High School. In May of 1962, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving his country faithfully during Vietnam. After being honorably discharged in July of 1966, he returned home to Anderson and on November 8, 1966, he was united in marriage to Marcella Butler. They were blessed with two ornery boys and one beautiful daughter. He retired from the McDonald County School District where he was a custodian for twenty years at Anderson Elementary. After retiring he worked an additional five years as janitor at the McDonald County Courthouse. He was currently the “Master Chef” Poppy’s Daylight Donut’s located on Main Street in downtown Anderson. Jimmie was an active member of New Life Church in Anderson and was always involved in numerous community activities. For over thirty years he mowed and maintained the New Bethel Cemetery in Anderson. He enjoyed fishing, skeet shooting and was a loyal fan of both the Royals and the Chiefs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Charles Wasson; and three sisters, Freida Wasson, Dorothy Thompson and Mary Ray.

Jimmie is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Marcella Wasson of the home; three children, Stephen Ray Wasson and wife, Angela, of Raymore, Missouri, Gary Alan Wasson and wife, Erica, of Anderson and Jessica Leann Pratt and husband, Marcus, also of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Keaton, Raegon, Maggie, Lane, Ellysia and Chance; a brother, George Wasson and wife Sandra, of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee; two sisters, Mabel Teague of Carthage, Missouri and Hazel Drake and husband, Ivan, of Anderson, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Wasson are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015, in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Bro. Tom Ellis officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the New Bethel Cemetery in Anderson. Duane Cross

Marvin Duane Cross, age 84, of rural Lamar, passed away, Monday October 19, 2015 at his residence after a short illness.

Duane was born, December 14, 1930 to Ora and Nadine (Bratton) Cross in Dade County. Duane attended Rockdale, a country grade school in Dade County, and later graduated from Golden City High School in 1949. After High School, he served in the United States Navy.

In 1953 he married Joanna Foster and they later divorced in 1978.

Duane was a farmer, and raised cattle. He drove a truck for North American Van Lines and was co-owner of the Lamar Livestock Barn for a short time. He started Cross Machinery and Salvage in 1968. In 1976, he started Cross Manufacturing, located in Mindenmines, MO, which is still operating today. Mr. Cross’ second salvage yard, known as Hilltop, was purchased in 1995 and is still operating today. He loved going to Auctions, and had traveled to Mexico and Canada, as well as 46 of the 50 states, having dipped one foot in the Atlantic Ocean and the other in the Pacific Ocean. He was a member of the former Harmony Baptist Church, and his family said that he led a very interesting life.

Preceding him in death, were his parents, Ora and Nadine Cross; an infant brother, Truman Cross; and a brother in law, H.C. Hooper Jr.

Survivors include a son Jon Cross and wife, Chris; a daughter Diana (Cross) Enright and husband Robert; a son Mark Cross and wife Marilyn; a daughter Karen Cross and fiancé Sam; one sister Zelma Hooper, all of rural Lamar; 10 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Daniel Funeral Home with burial to follow at Greenfield Cemetery, Jerico Springs, MO.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, October 23, 2015 at Daniel Funeral Home.

Jerry Campbell

Jerry Eugene Campbell, age 79, of Lamar, Missouri died Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Truman Healthcare Center of Lamar after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Jerry was born January 2, 1936 at Joplin, Missouri to Alan Mitchell and Marguerite Fontella (Davis) Campbell. He graduated Joplin High School and served his country in the United States Air Force. After serving in the military, he married Wanda “Kay” Wilson, on June 20, 1958, at Forest Park Baptist Church in Joplin, and together they raised three children. In 1971 he graduated MSSU with a Bachelor of Education.

Jerry owned and operated several greenhouses and nurseries during his career as well as working as a General Contractor in Arkansas, building houses with his son. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and was a member of REACH Church in Carthage, MO.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Kay; two daughters, Kaylynn (Dean) Connell of Brixey, MO, Cassie (Brian) Miller of Lamar, MO; one son, Camden Campbell of Leavenworth, KS; two brothers, Davey Campbell of Georgia and Kenny (Dixie) Campbell of Joplin, MO; six grandchildren, Erin (Justin) Bouckaert of Arnold, MO, Cabree Miller, Kaleb Miller, and Chase Miller, all of Lamar, Dane Connell and Daniel Connell of Arkansas; and four great-grandchildren, Brant, Adelyn, and Teagan Bouckaert, all of Arnold, MO, Makinley Miller of Lamar; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Daniel Funeral Home.

Betty Boles

Betty M. Boles, age 93, of Joplin, formerly of Lamar, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital.

Betty was born July 28, 1922, in Irwin, Missouri, the youngest of the four children of Barney and Myrtle (Garrett) Crockett. On June 16, 1940, at Neosho, Missouri, she married Paul Boles and they owned and operated Boles Jewelry in Coffeyville, Kansas for many years. Paul preceded her in death in 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walter and Everett Crockett; and a sister, Inez Quackenbush.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry (Annette) Boles of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Kenny (Linda) Boles of Joplin; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Crockett Jones of Pittsburg, Kansas; four grandchildren, Felicia (Bill) Maher, Napa, California, Byron (Tracy) Boles, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Leigh Anne (Jeff) Johnson, Franklin, Indiana, Eric (Alison) Boles, Shawnee, Kansas; nine great grandchildren, Stefan, Anna, Mackenzie, Keaton, Grayson, Griffin, Sydney, Simon, and Sarah; and several dear nieces and nephews.

Betty’s family will gather for a private graveside funeral service conducted by Mike Gage at Howell Cemetery.

Tommy Williams

Tommy Leroy Williams, age 77, of Lamar, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015 at his home following a long illness.

Tommy was born September 9, 1938 at Smithville, Missouri, the youngest of the three sons of Allen and Rosa (Tate) Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Woody & Wanda Williams and O.J. Williams; and his parents-in-law, Harold & Lorna Babcock.

Survivors include his wife and closest friend for more than 35 years, Clara (Babcock) Williams, of the home; a son, Rusty (Debbie) Rawlings, Jerico Springs; a daughter, Amber (Derek Merando) Williams, Pittsburg, Kansas; four grandchildren, Justin Rawlings, Jennifer Rawlings, Kolby Bevins, and Kaden Merando; two nephews, David Williams and Steven Williams; three nieces, Pat Burr, Linda Franklin, and Juanita Boyd; several great-nephews and great-nieces; and dear friends, Kim & Connie Roehrs & family.

In addition to farming in the Verdella/Bluff Chapel area, Tommy had worked at O’Sullivan Industries for 25 years, retiring in 2001. An ideal day for Tommy would include horse-back riding, preferably on his favorite steed, Blaze. He enjoyed fishing and camping trips with Clara, often to Branson. They were great travel companions, sharing adventures and making vacation memories. Tommy was a league bowler for many years and a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan. The Royals could also count on Tommy to cheer them on unless, of course, they were playing the Cards. His football favorites were the Rams and Chiefs and he followed them faithfully. Tommy was a quiet man of many interests and talents, but his first priority was always his family and spending time with any and all of them.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3rd, at Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Tuesday at Daniel Funeral Home.

David Disney

David Lawrence Disney, age 86, of Golden City, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Truman Healthcare Center where he had been a resident for the past three weeks. The Disney family is thankful for the wonderful care and compassion shown by the nursing home staff.

David was born April 14, 1929, at Laverne, Oklahoma, one of the three children of David and Charlotte (Roberts) Disney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Iris; and his brother, Cecil.

As a small child growing up through the Dust Bowl Days, David remembered his mother wiping his eyes each morning as they would be caked shut with dirt. While playing outside with his brother, Cecil, a dust storm quickly blew up. They had to crawl home on their hands and knees and had trouble finding their house. Later the family moved to Princeton, Missouri where David, Cecil, and their sister, Iris, walked to see the movie, The Wolfman, and it was dark when they left the theater. David loved to tell about being so afraid that they ran all the way home.

The Disney family moved to Golden City to own and operate Disney Service Station. David began a 42 year career at Wholesale Supply (Meeks) in Lockwood and helped Cecil by working at the station every Saturday. David’s sister, Iris, became ill with rheumatoid arthritis just as he started working at Meeks. He used his paycheck to cover her nursing home bill every week until she passed away.

On September 8, 1961, at Lockwood, David married Sharron Lynn Taylor and they had shared nearly 46 years together before her passing on June 12, 2008.

Survivors include a son, Craig Alan (Sherry) Disney, Bloomfield, Missouri; a daughter, Kathryn Boehne, Golden City; two brothers-in-law, George Riley (Dixie) Taylor, Golden City, and Eldor Von Stroh, Republic, Missouri; six grandchildren, Summer Mahala (Bryan) Peters, Theodore Michael Boehne, Brittany Shane Martin, Taylor Brooke Disney, Deana Lynn Stevens, and Adrienne Faith Culp; and five great-grandchildren, Isaac Scott Stevens, Isabella Stevens, Mallory Faith Culp, Jackson Elliott Martin, and Anna Charlotte Peters.

David was a die-hard Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fan. He umpired Little League baseball games in Golden City for many years and was known to have major differences with opposing team’s fans. David raised a huge garden every year and shared his abundant harvest. He was a member of Golden City United Methodist Church. David’s life was characterized by love for his family, hard work and honesty, and his family considered him to be the best dad and grandfather ever.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Golden City with Pastor Lonnie Pennell officiating.

Blanch Stevens

Blanch Stevens, age 72, of Lamar, passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at her home surrounded by family.

Blanch was born November 26, 1942, in Barton County, Missouri, to James and Cora (Hayward) McCulley. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bob McCulley and an infant brother; sisters, Flossie Tuck, Pearl McMackin, Barbara McCulley and an infant sister.

On June 6, 1961, at Tijuana, Mexico, Blanch married the love of her life, Lewis “Steve” Stevens and they made their home and raised their two children, Stevi and Gary, in Lamar. Many will remember Blanch as their hairdresser and confidant, as she worked as a cosmetologist and owned and operated beauty shops for many years. She was an accomplished artist, working in oils and tole painting, inspiring many budding artists who attended her art classes. She was a wonderful cook, sharpening her skills while cooking at her sister’s Tuck’s Café. She was a self-taught quilter and enjoyed collecting antiques. Her first priority, however, was always her family, and her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Steve, of the home; two children, Stevi (Doug) Robertson and Gary (Sheila) Stevens all of Lamar; two brothers, Bud (Gloria) McCulley and Earl “Butch” (Suzie) McCulley of Lamar; three sisters, Mabel Jones, Reeds, Missouri, Ida May Kozoil, Joplin, and Janie Freeman, Lamar; seven grandchildren, Cassie, Kyley, Brian, Tyler, Caleb, Sami Jo, and Dylon; 13 great-grandchildren, Braden, Kaden, Haley, Araya, Xander, Isaiah, Lauren, Jackson, Peyton, Gavin, Victoria, Hudson, and Kole; and a special niece and caregiver, Karen Tuck Johnson.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 29th at Daniel Funeral Home. Burial was in Lake Cemetery.

Cheryl Yvonne Schmidt, 63, Carthage, MO passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at her home. Cheryl Yvonne Kepler was born October 13, 1952 in Kansas City, MO to the late Pete Kepler and Ruth (Clark) Kepler. She was a graduate of Wyandotte High School, Class of 1970 and then attended the University of Kansas for two years. Cheryl worked for 35 years as a longshoreman in Long Beach, CA. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Carthage, MO where she was part of a women’s bible study and also served as a church volunteer.

Survivors include one daughter; Marlena Yvonne (husband Ernest) Olivas, Carthage, MO; one son; Michael Rene (wife Brittany) Olivas, Lakewood, CA; two brothers; Raymond (wife Linda) LaPietra, Lenexa, CA, and Robert (wife Kristy) LaPietra, Lenexa, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, DeeAnna LaPietra.

Pauline Frances Per was born January 1, 1917 in Girard, KS to the late Frank Per and Jenny Frances (Prosnecker) Per. She was the owner and operator of Pauline’s Diner and Thad’s Skelly Station in Avilla, MO. She was a cook at Judy’s Truck Stop, Jasper, MO, for 32 years, worked at Cooky’s Café in Golden City, MO, and was a Greeter at The Women’s Rest Center in the Jasper County Courthouse. She was a member of the Laugh a Lot Club in Avilla, MO. Pauline was a member of Fairview Christian Church, Carthage, MO.

Survivors include two sons; Michael T. (wife Robin) Cearnal, Seneca, MO, and William J. (wife Linda) Cearnal, Joplin, MO; two daughters; Stephanie (husband Danny) Hensley, Carthage, MO, and Cindy (husband Danny) Dillon, Ridgedale, MO; one sister; Stevie Eidson, Carthage, MO; thirteen grandchildren; Shawn Michael Cearnal, Joshua Thaddeus Cearnal, Sean Michael Johanson, Brent Hensley, Shelly Deruy, Matthew William Cearnal, Seth Baldwin, Nicholas Ramsay Renfro, Nathaniel David Renfro, Nolan Austin Renfro, Daniel Dillon, Dana Dillon, and Derek Dillon; twenty-one great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LaRae Lewis, 64, passed away October 29, 2015 at Joplin, MO. 

LaRae was born December 10, 1950 in Puyallup, Washington to Alvin Miller and Rosanna Bower Miller. She was a longtime Carthage resident and had lived in the Carthage area for the past 25 years, LaRae was a homemaker and a member of the Central Christian Church of Joplin. 

LaRae was united in marriage to Ron Lewis on February 25, 2000 in Carthage, MO, he survives. LaRae is survived by two sons Ron Burdette of Webb City, MO, and Ronald Lewis of Cudahy, WI, four daughters Stephanie Brown of Webb City, MO, Sabrina Tyndall of Webb City, MO, Lisa Purser of Fairland, OK, and Valerie Crites of Joplin, MO, seventeen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. LaRae is preceded in death by her parent’s two brothers James Thomas Miller and Leroy Webster Miller, and one grandson.

Teddy Rouse

Teddy Dean Rouse, 79, Granby, passed away October 29, 2015 at his home, following a brief illness. 

He was born November 18, 1935 in Neosho, Missouri, the son of Fred and Madge (Nigh) Rouse. Ted was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Neosho High School in 1953. He earned his B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla School of Mines and served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Ted spent his career as a chemical engineer, eventually becoming an executive with EFCO in Monett. He was an avid competitive golfer and loved animals, fishing, traveling, grilling and his annual trips to Hot Springs, as well as visiting family in Michigan and Florida. Some of his favorite trips were to Spain, Italy, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Mexico, but he loved his cabins on the water most of all. Ted designed his own home in Granby and cabin in Noel. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Neosho and loved the area he was raised. He was a rabid St. Louis Cardinals Fan, and rooted for the St. Louis Rams and Missouri Tigers. He never lost a game of cards his whole life and he loved to dance. 

Ted married Geraldine Shipman on November 3, 1960 in Granby, Missouri, where they raised their two sons. Geraldine preceded him in death on June 26, 2009. He is survived by a son, James Wade Rouse of Michigan; a sister, Marilyn Price of Indianapolis and a brother, Roy Rouse of Austin. In addition to his wife, Ted is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Todd Rouse.

Roberta Kay Courtright, 60, passed away at her residence in Friestatt, Missouri on October 29, 2015.

Kay was a longtime Quapaw, Oklahoma resident, she recently moved to Friestatt to be closer to her family. Kay was born on September 13, 1955 to Roy Reed and Maxine Towner in Van Buren, Missouri. Kay worked at Sandstone Gardens in Joplin and Greenhouse in Joplin. She enjoyed flower gardens and arrowhead hunting. 

Kay is survived by one daughter Michelle Chaney of Evansville, Indiana, one brother Keith Reed of Goodman, Missouri, two sisters Rhonda Ford of Mount Vernon, Missouri, and Kayle Peacher of Reeds, Missouri. Kay was preceded in death by her parents.

Jerry Buchanan

BUCHANAN, George J. "Jerry" Age 84, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2015. 

Born March 3,1931 in Dallas, Texas, Jerry graduated from Woodrow Wilson High in 1948. He then entered Southern Methodist University and lettered in baseball for the Mustangs. 

In 1950, Jerry transferred to Drury College, Springfield, Missouri, where he began his professional baseball career in combination with his fledgling journalism studies. He soon signed a bonus contract with the New York Yankees and played his first organized game as a pitcher for the Joplin Miners. 

After serving in the U.S.Army from 1951 to 1953, Jerry continued with the New York Yankees, pitching for their various farm teams, which included a winter season in Cartagena, Colombia. Jerry ended his playing career with the New Orleans Pelicans in 1958 and shortly thereafter joined American Airlines, retiring in 1996. 

Along with his friends and neighbors, Jerry will be missed by his family: brother, Tom, and his wife, Gail; nephew, Ben, and his wife, Deborah; grand nephew, Taylor, all of Atlanta, Georgia. Memorial services will be held at 3 pm on Friday, October 23rd in Restland Wildwood Chapel Dallas. Reception following at Jerry's family home.

Buchanan was on the 1950 Joplin Miner team that was loaded with talent including future big leaguers, Steve Kraly, Bob Wiesler, Lou Skizas, Cal Neeman and a shortstop with the last name of Mantle.

Buchanan had great stories about that era and then some later in life about Mantle when “The Mick” moved to Dallas and would encounter Buchanan, at the counter performing his duties for American Airlines at the Dallas –Ft. Worth Airport. I’m not going to get into any detail here other than Buchanan telling how Mantle would totally embarrass him by some of the things he would yell at him, for everyone to hear.

Probably the thing Buchanan was best known for as a young pitcher was his warm-up routine. While batters swung weighted bats before heading to the plate, he had a brick stashed in the bullpen and would throw it during his warm-ups. It made the ball seem lighter just like the weighted bats did for the bat used during the official plate appearance.

Velma Rogers

Velma B. (Coffey) Rogers born Feb. 20, 1919 and died at 96 years of age on October 29, 2015.

She had been very well cared for by The Good Samaritan (an Assisted

Living facility in Verona, MO) since May 2, 2014

Preceding her in death was her husband of 48 years (Leonard F. Coffey) who died Sept. 10, 1985 and was the father of their four sons: Ron K. Coffey of Webb City, MO, Roger L. Coffey of Pasadena, CA, Doug K. Coffey of Neosho, MO, and Dennis L. Coffey of Prescott, AZ. Also preceding her in death was her loving and devoted second husband of 18 years: Mr. Edward Rogers (who passed away on January 5, 2009).

In addition to her 4 sons, Velma B. (Coffey) Rogers is survived by numerous fine Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren scattered across numerous locales around the country. Velma (Coffey) Rogers lived an incredibly joyous life. This was evident both within her numerous life experiences of 90 plus years, and also more importantly, in terms of bringing 4 sons into the world--each of which were very fortunate to gain fine success from their own endeavors. They in turn produced multiple further heirs to the Coffey Family of tradition and self-worth.

Along with Velma and Leonard Coffey producing four sons to help create their legacy, Velma was further enriched in her long life by experiencing numerous adventures of travel throughout the USA and abroad with her since deceased life partners.

May our Mother: Velma B. Coffey now “Rest in Peace” from such an incredibly great ride!

Visitation will be from Sunday, November 1st thru Monday, November 2nd at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, MO. Graveside services and internment will be at Ozark Cemetery in Joplin, MO on Tuesday, November 3rd at 2 pm.

Jane Waynick

Sherry “Jane” Waynick, 66, passed away Saturday, October 17, 2015, at the Washington County Hospital, Washington, Kansas after a three year battle with lung cancer.

A graveside service will be held on November 7, 2015, 11 AM in the Park Cemetery in Carthage, MO.

Jane was born June 2, 1949, in Carthage, MO, daughter of William “Richard” Waynick and Mary Perry, Waynick, Scheetz. She attended Carterville Elementary in Carterville, MO and graduated in 1967 from Nebraska City, NE High School. Jane retired September 30, 2015, from the theater custodial department of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE. During the eight years Jane was employed at the University, she developed meaningful friendships with co-workers and students.

Jane was an avid University of Nebraska football fan and enjoyed watching the games. She loved animals and throughout the years fed many stray cats as well as having several pets of her own. Jane’s greatest joy was family. Over the years she made several trips to MO to visit family and to enjoy a show in Branson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents Roy and Sally Waynick and Lew and Bertha Perry; brother William “Bill” Waynick Jr.; step-father Herald Scheetz; four uncles; three aunts; and four cousins.
Survived by sister-in-law Dianna Waynick, Springfield, MO; nephews and spouses Mark and Jaye Waynick Ozark, MO, David and Cathy Waynick Dardenne Prairie, MO; great niece Payton Waynick Kansas City MO; great nephews Brandon and Nolan Waynick Dardenne Prairie, MO; aunt Rosalie Perry Joplin, MO; several cousins; step uncle and aunt Ernie and Zetta Scheetz and their family. Bill Hoffman

William Frederick Hoffman, Jr. died on October 26, 2015 at the Missouri Veteran’s Home, Mt. Vernon, Missouri. He was born on October 5, 1931, in Chicago Illinois to William Frederick Hoffman, Sr. and Hedwig Elizabeth Weiss Hoffman.

Bill grew up in Chicago. After graduation from Carl Schurz High School, he joined and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1955. Bill was stationed at Fort Crowder in Neosho, Missouri as a military policeman when he met Joyce ZaDean Johnson Joplin, Missouri. Bill and ZaDean were married on March 7, 1954 in Joplin.

Bill attended Joplin Junior College and Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas and earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1959 and Master’s degree in 1968. He started his teaching career at Carthage High School in 1959. He left Carthage High School in 1968 to teach in Joplin. He taught history at Memorial High School and then Parkwood High School until his retirement from teaching in 1989. Bill always had a second job while teaching. He worked part time at Sears in Joplin for many years, then started selling Jayco camper trailers in the 1970’s. He owned and operated Trailers and Sailers on old Route 66 until he closed the business in 2014.

Bill was a loving husband, devoted father and friend to many. He was a hard worker and there was very little that he could not fix or build. He was an avid reader and loved to travel. After he retired from teaching, he and ZaDean took many trips in the U.S. They also took many trips to Europe with their niece, Pat Grider Rodgers and her husband, Jack. These trips brought to life his love of history and made many wonderful memories.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sister Florence Clancy, brother Robert Hoffman, two step brothers, Richard and Roger Hoffman and a step sister, Mary Lou Hoffman. He is survived by his wife, ZaDean, two sons, Bill Hoffman and partner Maria Straus, and David Hoffman and wife Sheila, two daughters, Michele Sexton and husband Dean, and Julie Hoffman and partner Alicia, six grandchildren, Matthew Lonardo, Nicole Hoffman, Rachael Hoffman, Deandra Sexton, Luci Dickinson-Hoffman and Sally Dickinson-Hoffman, and five great-grandchildren, Aria and Arlo Lonardo and Allison, Aimee and Nicholas Pitts one sister, Hope Mijalski, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2015 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, followed by a memorial service at the funeral home.

Patsy Williams

Patsy Lee Williams, age 53, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away suddenly at her home on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.

Patsy was born on April 14, 1962 to Charles Tracy, Sr. and Elizabeth Fattig Tracy Hutchison in St. Joseph, Missouri. She has lived in the Joplin area for over 30 years, a period of that time working as a Teacher's Aide for handicapped children. Patsy was of the Pentecostal faith but was unable to attend church do to her health.

Surviving Patsy are her mother, Elizabeth Fattig Tracy Hutchison of Joplin; sons, Luke and Derek Williams, both of Joplin, Justin Tracy and wife, Shyla of Carl Junction; grandchild, Emma Joy; sisters, Penny Sue Day and husband, Frank of Fairland, Oklahoma, Lisa Wheeler and husband, Mike of Joplin and Sherri Sluder and husband, Randy of Joplin; brother, Charles Tracy, Jr. of Joplin; 11 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Charles Tracy, Sr.; step-father, Jerry Hutchison and seven siblings.

Services are planned for Monday, November 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Family will receive friends starting at 1:00 p.m. up to service time the day of services. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

Sally J. Chaligoj, age 60 of Carl Junction passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Mercy Hospital of Joplin. 

She was born on March 7, 1955 in Neosho, Missouri to James M. Gowen and Minnie (Freel) Gowen. Sally was a member of the Smithville Christian Church and a homemaker. 

She married Rick J. Chaligoj in May of 1979 in Webb City, and he survives at their home. Sally is also survived by her sons, Joe Chaligoj and wife Celeste of Joplin, Brad Chaligoj of Carl Junction, Jesse Chaligoj of Carl Junction; along with 6 grandchildren, Carley Chaligoj, Brock Chaligoj, Veda Chaligoj, Amarah Chaligoj, Rebecca Chaligoj, and Aidan Chaligoj. 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Smithville Christian Church. A visitation will be held on Monday from 1:00 PM until service time at the church. Burial will follow in Carl Junction Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Smithville Christian Church in her memory.

Rexanna Reynolds, age 62, Joplin, passed away at 11:18 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Mercy Hospital after a sudden illness.

Rexanna was born April 15, 1953 in Joplin to the late Rex Reynolds and Patricia Ann Lindley Reynolds and had lived in Joplin most of her life.

She was a homemaker.

Joyce Beach

Joyce Faye Beach of Carl Junction Mo went home to be with her Heavenly Father on October 25th 2015 at 10:40 am at National Health Care in Joplin Mo.

She was preceded in death by her Father John H. Clevenger, her Mother Nellie M. Seward, and her two sisters Linda Clevenger and Cathy Severs. She was survived by her two Brothers Kenneth Clevenger and Johnny Clevenger, her three daughters and son, Nellie Blankenship, Randy Sorter, Kathleen Conway and Tracy Burris. She had eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and spiritual children, family and friends who loved her.

Joyce was born on June 6th 1949 in Richie Missouri. She was a long time homemaker and Deliverance Minister, devoted mother and best friend to many. Joyce was truly a woman after God’s own heart and it was her calling to lead others to Christ.

A memorial service will be held on October 31st at 10:00am in Pioneer Missouri at Mt. Olive Cemetery any one that knew and loved her is welcomed to attend. Services will be officiated by Tony Intessimone.

Joyce Gullett

Joyce A. Gullett, age 60, Joplin, passed away at 8:02 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2015 at Cox South Hospital, Springfield, after a short illness.

Joyce was born September 25, 1955 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania to the late William Boehmler and Ruth Walton Boehmler and had lived in Joplin the past 25 years.

On May 26, 1979 Joyce married Chester N. Gullett in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Joyce studied accounting at the McCann School of Business and Technology in Hazleton. She worked as an accountant at Hardy, Wrestler and Associates for the past 25 years.

Family meant everything to Joyce. Whether she was cooking for their weekly Sunday dinners; taking camping trips to Stockton Lake; playing the piano or just spending time watching grandchildren's activities, she was happy doing all of it. Joyce was a proud supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs, but will be the first to tell you that it wasn't until Joe Montana became quarterback. She was also a faithful member of Christ's Community United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Chet, of the home; two sons, Jason Gullett and his wife, Ashley, Joplin, Craig Gullett and his wife, Laura, Joplin; grandchildren, Tyler, Bryson, Josiah, Truman, Parker; one brother, Richard Boehmler and his wife, Lynn, Hazleton, Pennsylvania; two sisters-in-law, Arlita Gullett, Joplin, Juanita Taylor, Carl Junction; two brothers-in-law, Duane Gullett, Lawndale, California, Clay Gullett, Apple Valley, California; and several extended family members and many friends.

Services are planned for Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Chris Sloan will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3-4:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

John Miles

John F. Miles, age 89, of Webb City passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at his residence.

He was born on November 12, 1925 in Chetopa, Kansas to Clarence W. Miles and Leila (Lollar) Miles. John graduated from Chetopa High School, a World War II veteran, and retired from the MKT Railroad. He married Mary K. Miles on July 28, 1944 in Oswego, Kansas and she preceded him in death on January 1, 2013. John is survived by his son, John David Miles of Webb City; daughter, Susan Lynn Forshee of Grove, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Clarence W. Miles of Pittsburg. 

John has been taken for cremation and the family will have private services at a later date.

Mary Ann Kinderman

Mary Ann Kinderman, age 78 of Joplin, Mo. passed away early Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at her home following an illness.

Mary Ann was born on August 6, 1937 in St. Louis, Mo. the daughter of Louis and Ruth (Payne) Quest. She has been an area resident for the past ten years, moving to Joplin from Russellville, Al. Mary Ann spent her days caring for her family as a homemaker.

She married Elmer Kinderman on December 11, 1954, Elmer preceded Mary Ann in death on February 6, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents and by a sister.

Mary Ann is survived by two sons; Brian Kinderman of Russellville, Al., Brad Kinderman of Dublin, Oh., one sister; Nancy Jennings of Joplin, two brothers; Louis Quest, Jr. of Joplin, Ray Quest of St. Louis, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Reverend Rex Robertson, will officiate. Burial has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2015 at the Springfield National Cemetery in Springfield, Mo. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Mark Snow

Mr. James Mark Snow, 66, of Ozark, Missouri, formerly of Sarcoxie, Missouri and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, departed this life on Monday, October 19, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mark entered this life on November 2, 1948 in Joplin, Missouri to the union of the late James Lee “Bud” and Margaret Ann (Smith) Snow. Mark was a 1966 graduate of Sarcoxie High School. In 1967 he enlisted in the United States Air Force returning home in 1971. He attended MSSC and obtained his bachelor’s degree. While attending college he was employed by Atlas Powder and Sperry Vickers both of Joplin, Missouri as well as working for Sperry Vickers in Brandon, Mississippi. In early 1982 he began his career with Hertz in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. During these years he spent eighteen months in London and Ireland for Hertz. Mark was involved in several organizations and activities, Director of Applications Development, served on IT curriculum board of Cameron University, Hertz IT Intern Program, Hertz Europe Infrastructure Service Center, Dublin, Ireland. Mark had a very successful career with Hertz, retiring in 2012. After retirement he returned to the Ozarks. He became reacquainted with high school sweetheart, Sharon Long and they were united in marriage on November 18, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Ozark, Missouri. Mark enjoyed family, yard and landscaping, traveling, golf and antique street rods.

He is preceded in death by his first wife; Carol Snow; and biological parents; James Lee and Margaret Snow.

Mark is survived by his wife Sharon, of the home; stepchildren; Doug Mitchell and wife Dot of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Cody Jacobs and wife Cinnamon of Strafford, Missouri, Dustin Jacobs and wife Aubrey of Sparta, Missouri, Stacey Venosdel and husband Darin of Strafford, Missouri and Cassie Carter and husband Joe of Huntsville, Arkansas; father, Richard “Pop” Kinney of Sarcoxie, Missouri; his sisters, Leigh Ann Hartman and husband Scott of Joplin, Missouri, Cary Schorers and husband Mike of Argyle, Texas, Thea Lawrence and husband Bryan of Republic, Missouri and Shelly Kinney and husband Bill of Miami, Oklahoma, brothers; Blaine Nordstrom and wife Janice of Joplin, Missouri, Mike and Dale Kinney both of Sarcoxie, Missouri, grandchildren; Allie, Chance, Ryker, Sophia, Slayde, Rocco, Harper, Eric, Brady amd Brihanna; several nephews and nieces as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services with full military honors for Mr. Snow were held Friday, October 23, 2015 in the chapel of Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home with Brother Blaine Nordstrom officiating. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, west of Sarcoxie, Missouri. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers were Scott Hartman, Gan Nunnally, Dennis Carter, Darin Venosdel, Cody Jacobs and Dustin Jacobs. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Fagg, Don Long, Ryker Venosdel, Slayde Jacobs, Brady Grider, Eric Grider, Rocco Jacobs and Joe Carter.

Paul Oberzan

Mr. Paul E. Oberzan, 55, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at his residence, after a long illness.

Paul was born January 5, 1960, in Oswego, Kansas, born to James and Ruby Louise (Donaldson) Oberzan. He was a former resident of Commerce, Oklahoma and graduated from Commerce High School in 1978. He attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma. Paul was employed as a service manager for Newell Coach in Miami, Oklahoma prior to his retirement. He was a gifted painter and a talented artist.

Paul was preceded in death by his mother.

He is survived by his father, James Oberzan, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, his daughter, Aimee Oberzan, of Joplin, Missouri and her mother, LaChrista Earle, of Miami, Oklahoma, a brother, Michael Oberzan, of Joplin, Missouri, a sister, Kathy Hutson and husband, Mike, of Derby, Kansas, and two nephews; Troy and Cody Hutson, of Derby, Kansas.

Kim Lancaster

Kimberly Ann Lancaster, age 55, of Neck City, Missouri passed away October 25, 2015 at her home. 

Kim was born on March 9, 1960 in Kellogg, Idaho to William and Jean (Silvey) Pierce. She lived most of her life in Missouri where she attended Alba and Webb City Schools, graduating in 1978. 

On September 27, 1980 she married Rick Lancaster and he survives at their home. Kim is also survived by a daughter, Amber; son, Jeremiah; grandchildren, Tristen, Ellis and Kymber; four brothers, and wife’s Bill and Janeene Pierce of Carthage; Rick and Carla Pierce of Neck City, Gary and Jo Pierce of Purcell, Ed and Gina Pierce of Neck City; along with numerous nieces, nephews and large extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Brenda Jankowski and Janetta Furdaus.

 Kim has been taken for cremation and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ron Beck

Ronald Lee Beck, 52, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at his home with family by his side.

Ron was born January 4, 1963 in Joplin to Bob Beck and the late, Mary Ann Frakes Beck. He was a lifelong resident of Joplin and worked 35 years for Eagle Picher. Ron loved his family and was constantly surrounded by great friends. Ron recently gave his heart to Jesus Christ and was attending St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he volunteered many hours of his time.

Ron is survived by his father, Bob Beck of Joplin; sons, Chris and Matthew Beck of Joplin, Travis Beck and fiancé, Tina of Joplin, Kody Beck and fiancé, Nicole of Charleston, South Carolina; 12 grandchildren that he thoroughly enjoyed; sisters, Linda Trenary, Debbie Strickland and Becky Davied, all of Joplin; nieces, nephews and many extended family and friends that will all miss Ron's big heart.

Services for Ron are planned for Thursday, October 29th at 6:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary, Joplin. Family will receive friends following the service. Cremation will take place following services and his ashes will be buried at a later date.

J. D. Wendleton

James David "J. D." Wendleton, 94, a longtime resident of Jasper County, died on Saturday, October 24, 2015 in Carthage of injuries from a recent fall. 

J. D. grew up on a farm in Cooper County, Missouri where he was born on March 18, 1921 to Lon and Grace (Hendrick) Wendleton, the fourth of five children. 

J. D. was married to Nancy Wolfe of Cooper County on October 7, 1943 in Wildwood, New Jersey before he was deployed to the South Pacific during World War II. He served in the Navy and saw combat as a gunner on Navy planes. When J. D. returned after the war, he finished his education at the University of Missouri with a degree in Agriculture. About 1948, he came to Jasper County where he taught agriculture to veterans. J. D. did custom farming in the area during the 1950s, then worked for 22 years at Atlas Powder Company. He continued his small farming operation until the end. His wife Nancy died in 1988. 

He is survived by his four children and their families: Karen Jones and husband Chris of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Jean Perry and husband John of St. Louis; Kim Wendleton, Susan Dawley and husband Jim of the Carthage area. Grandchildren are Derek Jones, Heather Jones, Laurel Bernard, Travis Perry, Wyatt Perry, Adam Perry, Nathan Dawley, and Cailin Dawley. He also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren, a sister Dorothy Hull of Albuquerque, and many nieces and nephews. 

A memorial service will be held at Ulmer Funeral Home in Carthage on Friday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a time of visitation at Ulmer's from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 103 Hodge Drive, Carl Junction, 64834, where J. D. attended in his last years. Peggy Rentfrow

Peggy Irene Rentfrow, age 87, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 8:58 a.m. Sunday, October 25, 2015 at her home following a five year illness. Peggy was born November 6, 1927 in Joplin, Mo. and was a lifetime Joplin resident. Peggy was an artist, and seamstress, and enjoyed cooking, and playing cards.

Peggy married James H. Rentfrow Sr. April 15, 1946 in Joplin and he survives. Additional survivors include a son, James H. Rentfrow Jr. and wife Rebecca, Joplin, three daughters, Sherron A. McBee and husband David, Diamond, Mo., Sandra Kaye Brackett and husband Allen, Duquesne, and Kathy De Armond, Joplin, two brothers, Ronald Stephens and wife Shirley, Joplin, and Donald Stephens and wife Joyce, Carl Junction, Mo., 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hal and Hazel Stephens, two brothers, Sonny and Bill Stephens, one sister, Betty Stephens, and two granddaughters, Rhonda Martin, and Shawn Rentfrow.

Donovan Samson

Donavon Samson Sr., age 91 of Joplin, Mo., passed away Thursday afternoon, October 22, 2015 at his residence in Joplin following an illness.

Donavon was born on July 5, 1924 in Newport, Nb., the son of Frank and Myrtle (Register) Samson. He worked twenty five years as a glass worker for the Libby-Owens-Ford Company retiring in 1978. He moved to Joplin in 2011 from Bentonville, Ar. where he was active in the Rogers Christian Church and the Bentonville Senior Center and the Joplin Senior Center.

He married Marie Ashcraft on October 12, 1945, she preceded him in death on July 27, 2014. Donavon was also preceded by his parents and three brothers and three sisters. 

Survivors include two sons; Donavon Samson II, Joplin, Mo., and Steven Samson and wife Julie of Granger, In., two daughters; Donna Dean and husband Dan, Swanton, Oh. and Karen Ruark of Joplin., four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel, Roger Hasselquist, will officiate. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the National Cemetery in Fayettville, Arkansas.

Kristy Tate

Kristy Lea Tate, age 43 of Joplin, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 following a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Born September 1, 1972 in Joplin, she was a homemaker, loving wife, caring mother and grandmother. Her lifetime was devoted to her family.

She is survived by her husband, Monte Harold Tate, with whom she had spent twenty-two years. Additional survivors include three sons, Jacob Simpson and wife Amanda of Joplin, Kody Simpson of Joplin, Kristopher Watts of Langley, OK; two daughters, Summer Tate and Savannah Tate, both of the home; two grandchildren, Gabriella True Randall and Leana Willow Simpson; her mother, Sandy Taylor of Branson, MO; and a sister, April.

Kristy was preceded in death by grandparents, Willie and Alice German, with whom she was particularly close.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at South Joplin Christian Church.

Lola Bladl

Lola Mae “Maizie” Bladl age 87 of Joplin, Mo passed away October 22, 2015 surrender by family at her home. She was born on March 27, 1928 in Joplin, Mo the daughter of Irvin and Maggie Nellie “Mitchell” Vaughn. She married Frank J Bladl on January 20, 1950 in Joplin, Mo he preceded her in death on August 15, 1997. Lola worked as a waitress for Rafters and Wilder's restaurants. She loved to play cards, play bingo and being around her family.

Lola was also preceded in death by her parents a daughter Mary Ruth Anderson on September 26, 2013, three brothers: Vernon, Floyd and Virgil Vaughn; two sisters: Lela Clemens and Pearl West; and a great grandson Christopher Vaughn. Survivors include a daughter Kathy Mitchell and husband Mark Jeffries of Carl Junction, Mo, a son Frank J. Bladl Jr. of Joplin, Mo; three sisters; Eunice Kiser, Lora June Ashens, and Letha Patton; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. 

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday November 6 2015 at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory with Pastor Jeff Swart Officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary.

Harry Leneau

Harry Marshall Leneau 81 of Jasper, MO passed away October 23, 2015 at his home. 

He was born December 3, 1933 to Harry and Avis (Marshall) Leneau. Harry was a scientist and inventor. 

Harry was united in marriage to Judith Bok on July 6, 1974. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Heather Bragg of Chicago, Illinois. One sister, Peggy Davis of Chicago, Illinois. One grandson, Aaron Bragg.

Gail Davidson

Gail Lee Davidson, 70, of Neosho, MO, formerly of Moberly, MO, passed away October 16, 2015 at Freeman Hospital. 

Gail was born September 15, 1945 in Moberly, MO to Charles Marion and Esther Mae (Nichols) Davidson. Having served in the U.S. Army from 1965 - 1968; Gail was a patriotic American who loved his country and often shared that love of country with others. Gail was an engineer for the Norfolk Southern Railroad for nearly 40 years. He was a member of Neosho United Methodist Church. 

Gail married Cheryl Greening on December 22, 1973, and she survives. Also surviving are four children, Dawn Brand and husband, Jeff of Moberly, MO, Shawn Davidson and wife, Genie of Moberly, MO, Greg Vitt and wife, Linda of Imperial, MO and Suzanne Puckett and husband, Stuart of Neosho, MO; eight grandchildren, Lexie Brand, Nick and Jack Davidson, Joseph, Patrick and Victoria Vitt and Sam and Stuart Puckett; and one brother, Charles Davidson and wife, Ibia. Additional survivors include brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

 Entombment was held Friday, October 23, at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO.

Richard Porter

Richard Dale Porter age 64 of Carthage, MO passed away October 22, 2015. 

He was born November 7, 1950 to Arville and Clara (Jordan) Porter. Richard was a mechanic and construction worker. He was a member of the Jasper Baptist Church and a 33-year member of the Brotherhood of Bikers where he served as vice-president. 

Richard was united in marriage to Patsy Russell on October 24, 1969. She preceded him in death on January 25, 1999. He then married Sandra Mader on September 11, 1999. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Richard D. Porter II. One step-daughter, Sandy Bouse. One brother, Gerald Porter and wife Linda. One sister, Karen Rush and husband Rocky. Two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 26, 2015 at Dudenville Cemetery, east of Jasper. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 25, 2015 from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Weng Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Dudenville Cemetery.

Verla Spry

Verla M. Spry passed from this life at Aaron Manor in Fairport NY on October 20, 2015 at the age of 97.

Verla was born near Avilla, MO on November 22, 1917, to the late Ella (Stotts) and Manley Jenkins.

Verla grew up in Avilla, MO, then attended Joiners Business College in Carthage, where she met Marvin Alexander. In 1940 they were married at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC where they had both accepted governmental employment positions.

Marvin was called to Army service in 1943, which took them both to Georgia for Marvin’s training. Marvin was sent overseas in late summer of 1944, after which Verla returned to Kansas City to be with Marvin’s family while awaiting the birth of their son, Glenn Alexander. Sadly, Marvin did not get the chance to meet his son who was born only a few months prior to being killed in action in April, 1945.

Several years later, Verla married Minden Spry. They had a daughter Sheila Spry (Packard). Upon re-entering the workforce Verla was employed at the Bank of Carthage, where she worked for nearly thirty years as a savings manager. She developed many close friendships with her customers and co-workers alike during that time.

Verla was energetic, social, and fun loving. She was a member of BPW and Soroptimist, as well as other organizations to which she devoted her time and energy. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage. She loved people, traveling, and reading, but most of all her family to whom she passed along her love of life and many other positive attributes.

Verla will be greatly missed by her surviving family which includes her son, Glenn and his wife Kris of Fairport, NY, their daughter Melanie and her partner Chasity; daughter Sheila Packard, her husband Jim of Rolla, MO, and their children Ian and Alyssa. She also is survived by her nephew, Maurice McCoy of Carthage.

Verla was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Alexander, as well as husband Minden, three siblings and her parents.

With the support of Aaron Manor and Hospice of Rochester, Verla was able to live her final days in comfort. Sheila and Glenn were with their mother in her final hours of life.

A memorial service will be held in Carthage at a later date followed by burial of her ashes at Park Cemetery. Arrangements will be handled by Ulmer Funeral Home.

Calvin Pearman

Calvin L. Pearman, 84, passed away October 19, 2015, in Carthage, MO. 

Calvin was born January 25, 1931 in Iola, Kansas to Hugh Edgar Pearman and Irma Russell Pearman. Calvin was a longtime Carthage resident living here for over the past 55 years. He was a teacher and taught Math and Physics at Carthage Senior High and Math at PSU. He worked many years at Schreiber’s also. Calvin served in the United States Navy and served in the Korean War. 

Calvin was united in marriage to Ruby E. Crocker July 22, 1955 in Iola, KS, for 60 years. She survives. Calvin is survived by his wife, two daughters Debra Naysee and husband Ali, and Lisa Anne Qualls and husband David; two sisters Norene Wilson, and Shirley Cahalen; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Russell Pearman. 

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday October 24, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday October 23, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be Park Cemetery Carthage, MO with full military honors. Contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Faithfull Friends Animal Advocates in Neosho in care of Ulmer Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made at www.ulmerfh.com.
