Nancy Platt

Nancy J. Platt, 91, Carthage, MO, passed away Saturday morning, November 26, 2016 at the Communities of Wildwood Ranch, Joplin, MO. Nancy Jane Givens was born August 19, 1925 in Carthage, MO to the late Thadeaus R. Givens and Alice (Agnew) Givens. She graduated from Carthage High School, Class of 1943. She then attended two years of college at Missouri Valley. Nancy married Thomas Warren Platt on September 21, 1946 in Carthage, MO; he preceded her in death on July 20, 2004. She was a homemaker and a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Platt, Carthage, MO, and Kathy Platt, Tollesboro, KY; four grandchildren, Dustin Irwin, Jenni Cully, Kelly Bauer, and Thomas Ogden; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one grandson, Christopher Bauer.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Fr. Steve Wilson will officiate. Nan Clarkson

Nancy Lynn "Nan" Clarkson, age 55, Joplin, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Mercy Hospital of Joplin.

Nan was born May 5, 1961 in Joplin, daughter of the late Donald Lee Clarkson and Betty Ruth Clarkson. She attended and graduated from Eagle Picher State School. She enjoyed the friendships she made working for many years at Joplin Sheltered Workshop.

Nan is survived by her brothers, Andrew Clarkson and wife Anne of St. Louis, Missouri, John Clarkson of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters, Janet Clarkson of Overland Park, Kansas, and Annie Clarkson of Joplin; nieces and nephews, Joy, Juli, Jenni, Joe, Josh, Drew, and Grey Clarkson.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 12:00 noon in Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment of her ashes will be private in Mount Hope Cemetery next to her parents.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Joplin Sheltered Workshop.

Chris Reynolds

Christopher Herman Reynolds, 55, passed away on November 19, 2016 at his home in Joplin, Missouri after a courageous battle with cancer.

Chris was born on January 2nd 1961 in Topeka Kansas to Ralph and Marian Reynolds.

Chris grew up in Springfield Missouri. He graduated Parkview High School in 1979. Following graduation Chris joined the Army where he excelled, becoming an Army Ranger, Green Beret and Special Forces Operator. He served in the military for more than 10 years. After leaving the military Chris earned a degree in Business Management from Missouri Southern University.

After working in manufacturing and transportation Chris went to work at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin Missouri where he worked as a Security Officer.
Following the 911 attacks on America Chris returned to the military and served as a member of a Special Forces Team in the Middle East.

Chris continued to serve his country, protecting US Diplomats in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and later as a member of Global Response Staff.

As a boy Chris spent a lot of time on his uncle’s ranch and it sparked a passion for the outdoors that stayed with Chris for life. Lessons learned on the ranch helped mold Chris into the man he would become. His strong work ethic and dedication to doing things right would later guaranty his success in life.

Chris shares his passion for the outdoors with his daughter Emmy.

Chris loved being a father more than anything. He loved spending time with his daughter. Whether cooking, shooting, turkey hunting or snuggling on the couch Chris was happiest when he was with Emmy.

In 2009 Chris met his fiancé and they set about building a horse barn and stable. Chris designed and helped build the barn at Finley River Stables. He was an excellent horseman, he loved riding and thrived on taking care of the barn and he horses.

In addition to a passion for horses Chris was an excellent businessman He was capable of juggling many business projects at once and was instrumental in helping start and manage a new business as well as helping to grow an established business.

Chris lived his life with confidence and he had an “all in” personality that was nothing short of inspiring.

In 2014 Chris began his battle with cancer. As with everything else in his life Chris gave this fight his all and was an inspiration to others.

Chris was a loving father and brother, devoted fiancé, patriot and an incredible human being.

Chris is preceded in death by his father Ralph, Reynolds his mother Marian Reynolds, his cousin Ruth Van Buren and his good friend Terry Walker.

Chris is survived by his daughter Emmyrson Grace Reynolds-Questelle his fiancé Sheila Williams, her son Dalton Williams, his sisters Mary Caroline Stanley and Iris Jeannine Sims, a brother Frank Reynolds, as well as cousins, his military brothers in arms and many close friends.

A memorial service will be held at the National Cemetery in Springfield Missouri on Monday December 5th at 11am immediately followed by a visitation with family and friends and celebration of Chris’s life at Finley River Stables 655 Arbour Road Sparta MO 65753.

Johnny Donaldson

Johnny Robert Donaldson, age 79, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 4:29 p.m. Sunday November 27, 2016. Johnny was born January 10, 1937 in Alpena, Arkansas. He has been a resident in Joplin since 1968. Johnny retired as Tool and Dye Manager for Eagle Picher Industries, Precision Products Department. He was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church, and was a member of the American Society of Tool and Mfg. Engineers.

Johnny married Robbie Jean Etter July 6, 1957 in Monett, Mo. and she survives. Additional survivors include a son, John Donaldson, Joplin, two daughters, Diana Prater and husband Rick, Wyandotte, Ok., and Deborah Souter and husband Blake, Rogersville, Mo., three brothers, Gene Donaldson and George Donaldson, both of Ks., and Hugh Donaldson, Ar., seven sisters, Nadene Henderson, Mary Armstrong, Rose Becker, and Virginia Allen, all of Ks., Freda Roach and Rita Holt, both of Ca., and Carolyn Elmborg, Joplin, nine grandchildren, Brandi Dodson and husband Richard, Joshua Locke, Ami Hall and husband Gerod, Jetta Walker and husband Cliff, Shaun Locke and wife Tasha, Brad Prater and wife Janet, Judd Donaldson, Hannah Souter, and Hailey Souter, and 15 great grandchildren. Johnny was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Oberzan, and a great granddaughter, Madisyn Jade Walker.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Forest Park Baptist Church Worship Center with Dr. John Swadley and John Donaldson, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joshua Locke, Shaun Locke, Judd Donaldson, Richard Dodson, Gerod Hall, and Cliff Walker. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Forest Park Baptist Church Chapel. Memorial contributions are requested to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.

Robert Richardson

Robert L. Richardson, age 72, of Carthage, Missouri, formerly of Exeter passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Carthage Health and Rehab Center.

He was born June 18, 1944 and lived in Missouri his entire life. He was of the Baptist Faith and loved singing, his church and writing cards and letters.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Maplewood Cemetery in Exeter, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.

Roxie Guinn

Roxie A. Guinn, 90, Stella, Missouri, died November 27, 2016 at Freeman West in Joplin, following a sudden illness. 

 Roxie was born November 15, 1926 in Stella, one of fourteen children, the daughter of John A. and Edna (Jackson) VanSlyke. She was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Stella, class of 1944. She co-owned and operated a dairy farm with her husband, Clifford, working along- side with him all of their married life. She enjoyed reading, genealogy, traveling, sewing, gardening, cooking, baking and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Stella Baptist church and Sunday school teacher since the mid 1940’s.

Roxie and Clifford Guinn were married May 20, 1944 in Bentonville, Arkansas and he survives. Additional survivors include two sons, Klint Guinn and wife, Vickie and Keith Guinn and wife, Sheila, all of Stella; six grandchildren, Joe Guinn, David Guinn, Jaysa Bookwalter, Jaclyn McCully, Justin Guinn and Rachel Neher; twelve great grandchildren, Shelby, Taylor, Mason, Kaitlyn, Josie, Morgan, Alivia, Cole, Jaxson, Caleb, Remi, Wyatt and one to be born in April, 2017 and special friends of over 63 years, James and Norma Mills and John and Donna Carmichael. She is preceded in death by her parents and thirteen siblings. 

 Services will be Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 at 11 am at the Stella Baptist Church, Rev. Jerry Yarnell and Rev. Stanley Upchurch will officiate. Interment will follow in the Macedonia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 pm at Stella Baptist Church. Mildred Parker

Vera ‘Mildred’ Parker, 93, Neosho, died on November 29, 2016 at her home in Neosho, following several months of declining health. 

Mildred was born July 2, 1923 in Tipton Ford, Missouri and was a lifelong Newton County resident. She was a homemaker and loved to cook and was an avid Bible reader. 

 Mildred married Robert C. Parker on May 30, 1944 in San Diego, California and he preceded her in death on July 7, 2002. She is survived by two children, Jickie Parker of Neosho and Diane Schafer and husband, Gary of Springfield, Missouri; one brother, Grover Harris of Neosho; two grandchildren, Gary and wife, Ruth and Alex and wife, Amy and great grandchildren, Morgan, Spencer, Owen and Grant. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by five brothers, Pat, Ellis ‘Joe’, Jimmy, Carl, Leonard ‘Jick’. 

 Services will be Friday, December 2, 2016 at 1 pm at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, Rev. Bob Dart will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Tipton Ford. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Schafer I, Gary Schafer II, Alex Schafer and Spencer Schafer. The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from noon until service time. Dorothy Coombs

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Knell Coombs, daughter of the late Louise Meuschke Knell and Frank W. Knell Sr., was born on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1918, in Carthage, Missouri. She was the oldest of five children, all of whom are previously deceased. Dorothy graduated from Carthage High School in 1936 and attended Lindenwood College in 1937.

On September 30, 1941, Dorothy was united in holy matrimony with Arthur Miller Coombs, who passed away on January 12, 1966. During World War II, they lived in Long Beach, California, and Great Falls, Montana. After the war they returned to Carthage, Missouri, where they were blessed with six children: Helen Smith, Galveston, TX, Barbara (Dr. Henry) Crotwell, York, SC, Jon (Karen) Coombs, San Marcos, CA, Sandi (Kevin) Checkett, Carthage, Nancy (Arthur) Hanson, Sandy, UT and Laura (Alan) Segervall, Half-Moon Bay, CA. After Mr. Coombs died, Mrs. Coombs ensured all her children graduated college and earned Master’s degrees. She was mother-in-law to six, grandmother to sixteen, and great-grandmother to seven.

A devoted sports fan, Dorothy loved the St. Louis Cardinals and looks forward to meeting Stan Musial, along with Abe Lincoln and her beloved Art. She was the loudest supporter at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. Dorothy loved cheering on her kids at swim meets, and was known fondly as “Coach Coombs” by the team members.

Dorothy enjoyed baking for her family, members of her church, the senior center, and friends who could no longer leave their homes. Her cinnamon sugar donuts were famous for making the law office of Checkett & Pauly close for an hour to sample some while they were still hot. She regularly shared pans of cinnamon rolls with friends and family.

She was honest. She was opinionated and shared her feelings. She didn’t suffer fools, and she did not like breaches of etiquette. She even occasionally carried grudges. Despite these things--and a little because of them--she is well-loved and will be missed.

Dorothy lived passionately and to the fullest. Always on the move and looking for the next party, she adored travelling as a young woman and continued adventuring to Europe into her ninth decade. She believed in a life well-lived, a world worth exploring, and the value of family and friends. She was fiercely protective of those she loved, who were many.

“Nana,” “Granny,” “Mom” celebrated a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with her children, as well as six of her grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. She was surrounded by loved ones when she passed on November 26, 2016.

Visitation will be held Tuesday November 29 from 6-7pm at Knell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 30 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Knox Laurance

Knox Nicholas Laurance, infant son of Shay and Jessica Laurance, of Carl Junction, Mo., became one of God’s littlest Angels on Sunday November 20, 2016.

Knox is survived by his parents; one sister, Stella Laurance of the home; paternal grandparents, Terry and Suzzette Laurance, Carl Junction, Mo.; maternal grandparents, Doug and Shelly Ross, Carl Junction, Mo.; paternal great-grandparents, Howard and Ruthann Laurance, Fred and Peggy Kiser; maternal great-grandparents, David and Wilma Ross, and Barney and Sharon Fuller, all of Carl Junction, Mo.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Carl Junction Cemetery. Reverend Joe Morris will officiate.

Bessie Lawless

Bessie Lavone Lawless, 94 and a retired LPN of Carthage, Missouri, passed away November 27, 2016. Mrs. Lawless was born on June 22, 1922 to Sam and Viola “Minkler” Storm in Oronogo, Missouri.

As a teenager, her family moved to Barton County where she graduated from the Lamar High School Class of 1940. After graduation, she was married to Elmer Ned Lawless on July 27, 1940 in Jasper. Elmer was employed by Standard Oil and later DX Oil Company for many years. Mrs. Lawless always said she never had a job she didn’t like. During W.W.II she was employed as an inspector at the Tent Factory in Lamar. Later, she moved to Kansas City where she worked at North American Aviation as a riveter building B25’s. After the war ended, she worked at Barton County Hospital and Barton County Ambulance Service. For the next 42 years, she was employed by the Lamar Clinic and Dr. Cain. She held membership in the Missouri State Association of LPN’s for 20 years.

Her husband of 52 years passed away in 1992. In 1993, she moved to Carthage to be closer to her family. Mrs. Lawless retired in 2000, only to start volunteering at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, the Red Cross and McCune Brooks Hospital. Wherever she was, she was having fun. She loved people, gardening and her many flowers.

Mrs. Lawless is survived by one son Gene Lawless of Joplin and one daughter Lois Prier of Carthage, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Elmer, her mother and father, one sister and seven brothers; all of her brothers were enlisted in W.W.II.

Mrs. Lawless was a member of the Lamar Methodist Church for fifty years. In 1993, after moving to Carthage, she became a member of the Carthage Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Konantz-Warden Funeral Home in Lamar. Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m., prior to services at Konantz-Warden Funeral Home.

Fred Anderson

Fred Anderson completed his last race here on earth on November 24, 2016, after almost a four year positive and courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born November 6, 1950 to Jack and Willanna (Chase) Anderson. He lived in Seneca throughout most of his life and graduated from Seneca High School. He obtained college degrees in Drafting and Design, Journalism, Broadcasting, and Dietetics. He worked in Nutrition Education, TV & Radio, Programming director with Operation Enterprise, roofing, DJ, and retired from Milnot in Seneca after 20 years as a Lab Technician in 2013. He was a very talented and intelligent man with diverse interests, very athletic, and always had a great sense of humor. Fred enjoyed running, swimming in his pool, listening to music, painting, gardening, coin collecting, rock laying, collecting St. Louis Cardinals memorabilia, watching & listening to his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, supporting Seneca Indians sports, and coaching & watching his daughter Summer’s sports and activities.
Fred was a Sergeant first class in the Army during the Vietnam War at the Pentagon and in SE Asia. He served as Communications Officer with the Army Chief of Staff Intelligence. Along with other medals, he received the Army Meritorious Special Service Commendation Medal for tour of duty in Korea, Cambodia and Laos, which he took great pride in being presented to him by General Omar Bradley.

Fred married Charlene (Yust) Anderson on September 12, 1996 and recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Seneca. He is survived by his wife Charlene; daughter Summer of the home; son Zack Anderson of Blue Springs, M0; daughter Jennifer Jones and husband Dan and three grandchildren of Joplin, MO; brother Terry Anderson and wife Cathy of Bradenton, FL; sister Susan McDonald and husband Terry of Fairhope, AL; and numerous nieces & nephews, in-laws, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and special cousin Sammie Mailes. 

Fred was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, brother, and uncle who loved life and being with family and friends. Special thanks to all of his doctors and staff at Joplin Freeman, Tulsa Cyberknife, and Avalon Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Summer Anderson College Scholarship Fund through Campbell Funeral Home at P.O. Box 380, Seneca, MO or Community Bank and Trust in Seneca, or to the Cancer charity of your choice. 

Visitation for Fred will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home on Thursday, December 1, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside services with Military Rites will be at the Seneca Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on December 2, 2016.

Jeff Roush

Jeffrey Allen Roush, age 54, Joplin, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at his residence after an illness.

Jeff was born June 1, 1962 in Joplin and was a lifelong resident.

He worked as a detailer in the automotive industry for several years. He had also worked at Morton Cabinet Company and Lozier, Inc.

Jeff is survived by a sister, Sheila Nash and her husband, Ronnie, Joplin; a brother, Michael Roush, Joplin; an uncle, Wilbur Roush and his wife, Barbara, Joplin and several other extended family members.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Merle Roush and Charlotte and Dale Doll and a brother, Steven Roush.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

Charles Hopkins

Charles F. Hopkins, age 70 of Galena, passed away at Freeman West Hospital on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at 3:15 PM.

Charles was born on May 18, 1946 in Joplin, MO to the union of Robert Sylvester Hopkins and Frances Idella (Still) Hopkins. He attended school in Riverton, KS until the ninth grade, when he transferred to Quapaw High School. He graduated from Quapaw with the Class of 1963.

Charles worked as a Processor at Eagle Picher for many years before retiring in 2007. He had also worked previously as a Route Driver for the Bunny Bread Company. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, and also served as a Union Rep for the Eagle Picher Union. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Springs City, MO. His hobbies included being a T-Ball Coach and Softball Coach, as well as playing men’s league slow-pitch softball, bowling, camping, and fishing. Above all else, he was a family man, and loved his kids and grandkids.

Charles was united in marriage with Vicki N. Matthews on August 1, 1970 in Douthitt, OK. She survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Janet Woodward of Phoenix, AZ, and Sheila Hopkins of Maricopa, AZ; three brothers, Robert “Bobby Joe” Hopkins (wife, Edna) of Mesa, AZ, Mike Hopkins (wife, Judy) of Miami, OK, and Rex Hopkins (wife, Barbara) of Miami, OK; three grandchildren, Faith Woodward, David “Bubba” Woodward, and Bryce Woodward, and one great-grandchild, Scarlet Lynn Woodward; as well as countless nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and five sisters.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 from 6-7:00 PM at Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena.

A funeral service will be held at Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 10:00 AM. Following the funeral service, Mr. Hopkins will be taken for cremation. Burial of cremains will take place at Lowell Cemetery at a later date.

Anthony Nieto

Anthony J Neptali Nieto, 25, of Joplin, Missouri, was called home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, November 21, 2016, after a very tragic accident.

Anthony was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri, on August 31, 1991, to parents Nelson and Kimberly Pelt Nieto. Anthony started public school in Joplin and was then home-schooled after 1st grade. He had worked for Walmart and most recently, he had worked as a service tech for Fletcher Toyota. Anthony had a lot of big dreams. He wanted to move to California so that he could design and customize sports cars. He also wanted to design his own video games.

Throughout the years, Anthony made a lot of good friends. Together with his brother Sebastian, they all played a lot of dodge ball and video games. In the summers, they would get together and play baseball in the park. They also enjoyed going to music concerts at different venues. Anthony took a trip to Colorado with his brother and friends; later hoping to move there. Anthony loved life and he lived with a big generous heart.

Anthony was a giver and he loved to help people. When he got his 1st driver’s license, he made the choice to be an organ donor. Due to his untimely passing, his gift of life will be able to help many, many people.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nelson Nieto; his grandparents, Jack Pelt, Kathleen Merl, Juan Nieto and Rosa Isolina Andrade Nieto.

Anthony is survived by his mother, Kimberly Nieto of the home; his brother, Sebastian Nieto of Joplin; a sister, Christina Nieto of the home; half brothers, Ronal Nieto, Juan Nieto and Fabian Nieto, all of Connecticut; a half sister, Doris Nieto of Cuenca Ecuador; his grandfather, James Merl, of Joplin. Anthony is also survived by numerous other family members, both of the United States and of Ecuador; as well as many, many friends. In addition, he is also survived by his beloved dog Gizmo.

Anthony wholeheartedly believed in Jesus Christ. John 3:16.

Cremation arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.

A celebration of Anthony's life will be held at a later date. Other services are pending.

Mr. Charles Basil “Chuck” Plant, 82, of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Friday, November 25, 2016, at his home after a recent decline in health.

Chuck entered this life on May 6, 1934, in Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, one of twelve children born to the late Augustus and Lillie (Deslippe) Plant. He was raised and attended school in Amherstburg. On December 5, 1964, he was united in marriage to Sandra Holland and to this union five children were born. They resided in Florida; Vancouver, British Columbia; West Plains and Poplar Bluff before moving to Joplin in 1974. Chuck worked in the field of insurance throughout his life. For several years, he served as district manager of Combined Insurance of America, later owning Tremont Insurance of Joplin. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin and a Veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

His parents and ten siblings preceded him in death.

Chuck is survived by his wife of nearly fifty-two years, Sandra Plant, of the home; five children: Tara Mahoney and husband, Robert, of Boxford, Massachusetts; Geoff Plant and wife, Melissa, of New Bern, North Carolina; Marla Testerman and husband, Bradley, of Joplin; Jana Shipley and husband, Mark, also of Joplin; and Sonda Newton and husband, Timothy, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; thirteen grandchildren; a sister, Marie White, of Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Mass for Mr. Plant will be held on Monday, November 28, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin, Missouri, with Father Justin Monaghan officiating. Entombment will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Geoff Plant, Gregory Plant, Grant Testerman, Connor Mahoney, Aidan Shipley, Collin Shipley and Timothy Newton. A Prayer Service and Rosary is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin with Visitation to follow until 4:00 p.m. Memorials are being directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and contributions may be left at the mortuary. Amy Smith

Amy Elizabeth Smith age 41 of Joplin, Mo passed away on Thursday November 24, 2016 at her home. 

She was born on May 25, 1975 in Joplin, Mo, the daughter of Richard and Nancy “Phipps” Smith. Amy graduated from Joplin High School in 1993. She then earned her Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education from Missouri Southern State College and her Masters in Special Education from William Woods University. She worked as a resident advisor for Lafayette House in Joplin, Mo. Amy drew her strength and purpose from serving others. She was a member of Impact Life Church, served with S.O.S. Ministries, attended bible studies at The Light at Joplin, served as the family historian, loved Jesus, animals, her family, and especially her nieces and nephews.

Amy was preceded in death by her grandparents: Lee and Mildred Phipps and Gene and Elizabeth Smith, and two step-sisters Tricia Cain Petefish and Sandy Estabrook Petefish. Survivors include her mother Nancy Kloeckener and husband Mark of Joplin, Mo; father Richard Smith and wife Sherry of
Broken Arrow, Ok; two brothers: Scott Smith, and wife Jeanne Ann of Grove, Ok, Jamie Smith and wife Susan of Joplin, Mo; three step-brothers Casey Kloeckener and wife Heaven of Baxter Springs, Ks, Terry L. Templeton of Wichita, Ks, and Steve D. Templeton of Wichita, Ks; two step-sisters: Sarah Gould and husband David of Joplin, Mo, and Diana J. Riffle of Federal Way, Wa; nine nieces and nephews: Cameron and Courtney Smith, Jordan and Faith Collingsworth, Dylan, Shayla and Savannah Gould, and Eric and Kevin Deems.

Neal Boydston

Neal R. Boydston, age 57 of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Freeman Hospital.

Neal was born on January 9, 1959 in Kansas, the son of Dale and Yale (Larimore) Boydston. He lived most of his life in Joplin. He worked for Pearl Brothers as a Manager and for Boydston Woodworking for over 20 years.

He married Emily (McGehee) Boydston on April 12, 1992 she survives. Additional survivors are 3 Daughters Jamie Crandell and husband Wayne of Joplin, Sarah Epperson and husband Tommy of Joplin, and Chasley Boydston of Joplin. One son Kevin Boydston and wife Lacie of Joplin, 2 step daughters, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Neal was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Peggy Collier and Shirley Walker. One brother Ted Boydston.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 28 2016 at Mason-Woodard Mortuary with Roger Hasselquist, officiating. Burial will follow at Burkhart Cemetery, Racine, Mo. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4-5 p.m. at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.

Lola Elam

Lola C. Elam, age 88 of Carthage, passed away early Friday, November 25, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin following an illness.

Lola was born on July 18, 1928 in Pea Ridge, Ar., the daughter of William and Thelma (Ricketts) Berry. She has been an area resident since childhood. Lola was an entrepreneur, accountant, and counselor and actively volunteered for several organizations. Lola was most recently a member of Grace Point Assembly of God in Carthage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands; Harry Staples, Richard Diggs, and Bill Elam, and by her brother, Richard Berry. Survivors include two sons: David Diggs of Washington DC, Richard Staples of Carthage, two daughters; Dian Wicklund of Carthage, Susan Zimmerman of Oronogo, one sister; Martha Cate of Ft. Smith, 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2016 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Pastor Danny Graves of Richland will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery on Locust Road (D highway) east of Alba. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.

Jim Hughes

James C. Hughes, age 81, of Neosho, Missouri, passed away in his home surrounded by all his family on Saturday, November 26, 2016. Mr. Hughes, son of Print and Alma (Wray), was born on January 4, 1935, in Columbus, Ohio, where he was raised and loved spending time at his uncle’s farm. In his early years he attended several schools, and graduated from San Bernardino High in San Bernardino, California. Jim served his country proudly, serving in the United States Army. He later attended college where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry from Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, California.

Jim met his wife Sharon Sue Moore and was united in marriage on October 25, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio. Subsequently he accepted a job as a chemist for San Bernardino County. Within a few years memories of the farm came flooding back to him and he moved his family to Purdy, Missouri.

Jim had a passion for animals and that is what he based his future and his life on. His desire to own his own dairy farm led to also raising pigs, beef cattle, dogs, and cash crops.

Jim later went on to become an advocate for the pet and agricultural industries, writing editorials in many magazines and a member of many associations. He was the Chief Editor of the Kennel Spotlight Magazine, President of the American Professional Pet Distributors Association, Inc., and a member of the Wheaton Saddle Club and Young Dairy Men’s Association. With Jim’s love of writing, he wrote two books “Bugle Ann” and “Zero the War Dog” which were published and enjoyed by many.

Jim had a love for Jesus Christ and if he could leave one thing to his family and friends, it would be his faith. He was a member of the Rocketdyne Road Church of Christ in Neosho where he was an elder and was always there to lend a helping hand.

Jim was not a man of many hobbies and together with his wife, decided to contribute to several charities on a regular basis. He enjoyed playing country music and was the co-host of a radio talk show. Jim loved spending time with his family and friends, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Sharon Sue Hughes, of Neosho; two sons, Doug Hughes and his wife Deana, and Bob Hughes and his wife Stephanie, all of Wheaton; one daughter, Trisha Pointer and her husband Henry, of Neosho; eight grandchildren, Chadd Hughes and his girlfriend Mica, Jesika Banta and her husband Shaw, Shayla Stehlik and her husband Eli, Brandon Pointer and his girlfriend Victoria, Andy Pointer and his wife Celina, Jakob Hughes, Colton Pointer, and Kassie Pointer; eight great-grandchildren, Hadley Hughes, Lailah Banta, Haylon Hughes, Remington Stehlik, Preston Pointer, Breanna Pointer, Hensley Hughes, and Beckett Stehlik.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis, and his step-father, Richard “Doc” Cozad.

Memorial contributions may be made to one of Jim’s chosen charities: St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, or the Fair Haven Children’s Home, and entrusted to the White Funeral Home and Crematory, P.O. Box 890, Cassville, MO 65625.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at the Rocketdyne Road Church of Christ in Neosho, with Denny Kruse, Minister, Doug Hughes and Bob Hughes officiating; burial to follow at Muncie Chapel Cemetery in Wheaton. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on November 29th at the Rocketdyne Road Church of Christ in Neosho.

Shelah Russell

August 10, 1968- November 25, 2016

Shelah Russell was doubly blessed with beauty, inside and out. We could say Shelah lost her battle with cancer, but I say that’s nonsense. I know my sister. I’ve watched her my whole life. Her stubborn but awesome personality, laughing with her friends, hanging out with her family. I know what she’s made of. Cancer never stood a chance against her. I know it wore down her body. I know it exhausted her strength. And I know it took her life. But cancer couldn’t dim her smile. And what a smile it was! Everything good, everything wholesome, everything pure about her life was found in her smile. But there was more...a hint of mischief, a sense of self-confidence, an unmistakable kindness. It was the kind of smile that drew people to her. That smile was there as far back as I can remember in my childhood. The ravages of cancer, chemo and radiation could not wipe it from her face. Cancer was helpless against it.

Cancer could do nothing to diminish either. When chemo robbed her of her hair, she sported some of the coolest headwear you’ve ever seen, looking good all the while. Even more striking than her physical features, though, was her inner beauty. It was a beauty that shined through her eyes and smile every day of her life. Cancer tried to take it from her, but failed miserably.

Cancer couldn’t steal Shelah's popularity. To know her was to love her and to root for her. We should all be so lucky to have as many friends as Shelah did. She touched more people in her time on earth than most of us could in 100 years. From her doctors and nurses to her friends and strangers to children she had never met, no one entered Shelah's orbit without being inspired by her. Cancer was utterly helpless to interfere.

Cancer was unable to break Shelah’s spirit. Her zest for life shined brightly to the end. Her confidence and adventurousness were undimmed. She took everything cancer could throw at her and kept going. She endured pain that would have hobbled the toughest adult. She found energy in the face of draining treatments. She maintained a positive outlook in the bleakest of situations. Where was cancer’s victory in that?

Cancer ripped a hole in the lives of everyone who loved Shelah. Cancer left us devastated and heartsick. Cancer robbed the world of someone who had done and would of continued to do great things, someone that did make and would of continued to make a difference.

But cancer did not beat Shelah. It never ever stood a chance! Fly high with those new wings sister, I love you so so so much and will miss you while I spend my time on this earth without you. But I will see you again! -Your baby brother Rey

Survivors include, one son, Patrick John (PJ) Hathaway, of Braidwood, Illinois; one daughter, Meghan Wagge, of Wilmington, Illinois; her parents, Patrick and Ann Williams, of Neosho, Missouri; one brother, Rey Bryand, and his wife, Jessica, of Neosho, Missouri; two sisters, Raquel Ballard, and her husband James (JR) Ballard, of Plainfield, Illinois and Crystal Grgec, and her husband, Stanko, of Springfield, Illinois; one step-brother, Rick Williams, Berwyn, Illinois; one grandson Keegan Peterson; maternal grandmother, Faye Compton, of Moulton, Alabama; one great-grandmother, Virginia Hahn, of Cicero, Illinois; one special friend and companion, Sean Allison, of Braidwood, Illinois; and all of her very special nieces and nephews and a multitude of family she loved dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 3, 2016 2:00p.m. at PT's on 66, 113 E. Baltimore St. Wilmington, IL 60481.

Frances Preddy

Nanah Frances Cox Preddy was born March 3, 1929 in rural Barry County, the daughter of Frank and Nanah (Hopkins) Cox. She passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Cassville Health and Rehabilitation. Frances’ mother, Nanah, died after giving birth to Frances. Frances was raised by her maternal Grandmother, Jessie Hopkins, and joined a household with 12 children. Frances being the baby was raised by her many aunts and uncles. She attended rural schools throughout Southwest Missouri and graduated from Cassville High School in 1947. In 1953, she married Joseph Allen Preddy in Cassville, Missouri, where she resided the remainder of her life.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Allene Cook and Madge Bonvicin and a brother, Buford who died as an infant. Her husband Joe passed away in 2014. Surviving are her children, Annette Henderson of Cassville and Joseph Paul Preddy and his wife, Luann, of Barre Vermont; three grandchildren, Nanah Devon Forsythe and her husband Preston of Shell Knob, Missouri and Jake Ryan and Lauren Elizabeth Preddy of Barre, Vermont. Also surviving are her dear niece, Sue Scheurich and her husband Greg of Joplin, Missouri and nephew, Steve Bonvicin of San Diego, California. Additionally, many cousins and friends dot the countryside, too many to mention.

Frances worked in Cassville at various clerical jobs with one of her favorite being Culver Funeral Home which is now Fohn Funeral Home. She served in many capacities from bookkeeper to hearse driver, hairdresser to funeral singer. Frances volunteered all her life for organizations in this community. She delivered Meals on Wheels from 1974 to 2009 when her health kept her from the regular route.

As a member of the First Baptist Church of Cassville she attended services regularly. Joe was a Methodist and Frances was loyal to the Cassville United Methodist Church as well, serving as Sunday School Teacher and Choir Member for years. Frances and Joe attended both churches faithfully.

Besides her family the joy in her life was singing. She was a member of the Stamps Melody Girls Quartet and the Treble Tones Sextet. Frances sang solos in Church and for a multitude of weddings and funerals. Her idea of a great time was going to a Sundown to Sun-Up Gospel Singing.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cassville under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Pastor James Weaver will conduct the services.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Monday at Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the choice of the contributor in honor of Frances.

Margaret Usery

Margaret Usery, age 73, Joplin, passed away at 6:26 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Mercy Hospital.

Margaret was born January 29, 1943 in Springfield, Missouri to the late Bob and Mary Powell.

She worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone, now AT&T for over twenty eight years in Springfield, Tulsa and Jacksonville, Florida. She returned to Joplin in July of 2016.

Margaret married Virgil Usery on November 24, 1979 in Joplin. He survives at the home.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Debbie Hankins, Palm Springs, California; a son, Randy Usery, Phoenix, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Connie Usery, Topeka, Kansas; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by a son, Steve Usery, in 2015.

Services are planned for Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Jeff Martin will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services in the chapel. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at White Oak Cemetery, Rogersville, Missouri.

Deanna Griffith

Deanna Darlene Robertson Griffith was born Jan. 4, 1939 to Fred Benjamin and Lucille Amelia Robertson in Henryetta, OK. She was one of seven children. She graduated from Henryetta High School in 1957.

Darlene was married to Bill Wise in 1957. Three children were born during this union, Lucia Deann, Gayla Ruth and William E. Wise Jr. She moved to Joplin, MO in 1969. In 1972 she married George Griffith in Jane, Missouri. She has two 'bonus' sons from this marriage, Jeff and Steve Griffith. She and George now have ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Lucille Robertson, two sisters, Lawana (Lee) Francisco Jobe and Alice Mall, and three brothers Burley Dean Robertson, Bob F. Robertson, and Bill (Bulldog) Robertson. She is survived by her husband, George Griffith, daughters Lucia Bush, Carthage, MO, Gayla White and husband, Rick of Bentonville, AR, son Bill Wise Jr. And wife, Rhonda of West Siloam Springs, OK, Jeff Griffith of Brewton, AL, Steve Griffith of Ft. Walton Beach, FL. Granddaughters, Casey Shaw and husband John, Rogers, AR, Kendall Ratcliff and husband Jackson, Little Rock, AR, Melanie Griffith Pollard and husband Brandon, Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Lacey Garrett and husband David, Tahlequah, OK. Grandsons, Rodney O'Brien, Joplin, Mo, Ryan Bush, Jane, MO, Trent Wise and wife Dailey, Waynesville, MO, Shane Clark and wife Shelley, Bentonville, AR, Eric Stephens and Matt Stephens, Tahlequah, OK. Great Grandchildren, Katelyn and Natalie O’Brien, Miles Shaw, Benelli Wise, Kaci Ann and Chase Clark, Keller Stephens, Copper and Zane Garrett. Sister, Donna Dickey and husband, Carl Don, Lake Eufaula, OK. Many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She was loved and will be missed by all.

Funeral services for Mrs. Griffith are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Jane, Missouri with Pastor Rick Haskins officiating. Burial will follow in the Jane Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes. Rodney Rearrick

Mr. Rodney Gene Rearrick, 44, of Goodman, Missouri, departed this life suddenly on Thursday, November 24, 2016, at Freeman Hospital in Neosho, Missouri.

Rodney entered this life on July 17, 1972, in Neosho, Missouri, son of Bobbie and Recia (Evans) Rearrick. He was raised in Neosho, Missouri and was a 1990 graduate of Neosho High School. On March 4, 1995, he was united in marriage to Lisa Rice and together they have shared the last twenty-one years. They resided for several years in the Springfield and Branson, Missouri area. Throughout his life he worked in the field of security. Rodney was of the Baptist faith.

Rodney is survived by his wife, Lisa Rearrick of the home; one son, Jacob Washington Rearrick of the home; his mother, Recia Clark of Goodman, Missouri; a brother, Shane Rearrick of Webb City, Missouri; seven half-sisters, Glenda, Gloria, Gail, Gwen, Gaye, Goldie and Jerri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Nadine Smith

Nadine Smith, a native of Lockwood, MO and a resident of Baton Rouge, LA departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, in Sunrise Senior Living on Siegen, Baton Rouge, at the age of 92 years.

She was born Oct. 14, 1924 in Lockwood, MO to Dewey M. and Bernice (Maxwell) Knier. Nadine was united in marriage to John L. Schneider on Aug. 27, 1944 in Lockwood, MO who preceded her in death. She was united in marriage to Everett L. Smith, on Aug. 8, 1958, in Springfield, MO who also preceded her in death. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law Pauline and Arthur Carrier and brother-in-law Paul Murrell. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Sylvester of Baton Rouge and her two granddaughters, Jennifer and Janelle Sylvester of Austin, TX; her step daughter and son-in-law Joan and Jerry Rutter of Corpus Christi, TX; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law: Vinita Murrell of Columbia, MO; Duetta and Jim Edwards of Salem, MO; and Martha and Roy Fortner of Lee’s Summit, MO. She also is survived by 12 nieces and nephews, her former students, other relatives and friends.

Nadine received her AA degree from Southwest Baptist University, her B.S. in Education degree from Southwest Missouri State University and her Master’s in guidance and counseling from Kansas State University. She also attended the Louisville, KY, Baptist Theological Seminary Training School. She taught elementary school in Miller, MO and Home Economics in Miller, Greenfield and Lockwood high schools for several years. She was the guidance counselor at Lockwood, Stockton, Laquey and Richland school systems in Missouri prior to her retirement. She resided in Lockwood, MO most of her life. She moved to Baton Rouge, LA in 2011 to be near her daughter and granddaughters. She was a longtime member of the Lockwood Baptist Church and was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. She received the Lifetime Service Award from Southwest Baptist University and numerous other teaching and service awards. She held fast to her Baptist faith all her life and provided a large amount of service to her churches, schools and communities. All who knew her, loved and admired her.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the Lockwood First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Lockwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday until service time in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Baptist University Knier Family Scholarship. Ron Holmes

Ronald Joe 'Ron' Holmes, age 58 of Joplin, passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at his home following a short illness.

Ron was born January 24, 1958 in Lafayette, Indiana to the late Phillip Holmes and Helen Mattingly Holmes. Prior to illness, Ron worked as a mixer for Annie's Bakery in Joplin. He graduated high school from Jefferson High in Lafayette, Indiana. Ron was an avid Chicago Cubs fan as well as doing anything outdoors. He enjoyed hunting fishing, bird watching, but most importantly, his grandchildren were his pride and joy.

On August 3, 1979, Ron married Gloria Atkinson in Joplin and she survives of the home.

Carol Kerr

Carol I. Kerr, age 78, Joplin, passed away at 11:12 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016 at her home after an illness.

Carol was born June 28, 1938 in Baxter Springs, Kansas to the late Jess Hodge and Daisy Vader Hodge and had lived in the area all of her life.

She worked at the American Red Cross for 22 years, 17 of which as the executive director, retiring in 2001. Carol was a graduate of Baxter Springs High School in 1956 and was a member of the 56 Gals Lunch Group. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Baxter Springs.

Carol married James Kerr, Sr. on March 18, 1967 in Joplin. He survives at the home.

Additional survivors include her children, Kathy Kerr, Louann Karleskint, Grove, Oklahoma, James Kerr, Jr., Carthage, Mary Jo Loverton, Huntsville, Illinois, Carla Kerr and Darla Kerr, both of Carl Junction; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by a son, Charles Cole.

Memorial services are planned for Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel.

Rev. Jeff Street and James Kerr, Sr. will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, in care of Parker Mortuary.

Zach Hopper

William Zachary Hopper, 39, Seneca, MO, passed away suddenly November 18, 2016.

William Zachary Hopper was born August 11, 1977 in Joplin, MO, the son of William R. “Bill” and Carla Elaine (Webb) Hopper. Zach loved the outdoors. He loved to fish and hunt. Zack was a member of the 1995 State Champion Seneca Indians Football Team. Zach formerly worked as a welder and he was a devoted grandson to Augusta Webb.

Survivors include his father William “Bill” Hopper, Seneca; mother and stepfather, Carla and Mark Parrish; one sister, Andrea McGrew and husband Shawn; grandmothers Augusta Webb and Betty Hopper, both of Seneca; several aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Zack was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Carl Webb and Rex Hopper.

Funeral services under the direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca will be held at 10:00am, November 28, 2016 at the Seneca Assembly of God with Pastor Denny Sikes officiating. Charles Rice

Charles Otis Lewis Rice age 83 of Carterville passed away on November 22, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital. 

He was born on May 11, 1933 in Marion, Ohio to Claude O. Rice and Catherine A. (Cook) Rice. Charles was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Korean War, and a furniture salesman until his retirement. 

He is survived by several close friends. Charles has been taken for cremation and there will be no services scheduled. He will be buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Deborah Brockway

Deborah Ann Brockway, age 60 of Carl Junction, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Mercy Hospital following a sudden illness.

Deborah was born November 3, 1956 to Larry Brockway and Patsy Davis Vananda. She was once a restaurant manager for the family business in Jackson, California. Deborah had a special way of making everyone feel loved and cared for. In fact the last several years, she has lived with and cared for her precious mother. Deborah was passionate about all animals, adopting many throughout the years. She loved the Lord and all of His creation. Deborah was a member of Carl Junction Christian Church.

She is survived by her mother, Patsy Vananda of Carl Junction; brother, Ed Ingle and wife, Julie of Joplin; sister, Cathy Smith of Springfield, Missouri; step father, Gary Ingle of Ukiah, California; and her nieces and nephews that were very special to her.

Her father, Larry Brockway has preceded her in death.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Robert Fullerton

Nathan Burns

Nathan Andrew Burns, age 33 of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at his home.

Nathan was born on March 23, 1983 in Joplin, the son of Benjamin and Annie (Mitchell) Burns. He has been a lifetime area resident. He worked as a cook for Instant Karma Gourmet Hot Dogs and at Blackthorn Pizza & Pub. Nathan was an avid music lover and was known in the downtown music scene. He loved going to concerts of all kinds, from local basement shows, to jamming with his friends in a living room, to big arenas. Nathan was also quite an artist, all of his life he would do drawings for his family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, aunts and uncles, Missy and Scott Jackson of Carl Junction, Mo., David Burns of Joplin, Loretta Richey of Joplin, Kim Starkey of Rogers, Ar., Mary Vantresse of Joplin and Robby Burns of Palm Bay, Fl., many cousins and close friends.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel, with Paul Moser, officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation on Monday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marland Scheffler

Marland Scheffler, 80, Granby, died November 19, 2016 at his home. 

 He was born June 16, 1936 in Pierce, Nebraska the son of Harold and Hilda (Schulty) Scheffler. Marland served in the National Guard and had worked in the construction business as a heavy equipment operator. 

 He is survived by three daughters, Natalie Middleton, Nancy Rehder and Pam Scheffler; sister, Kathy Hickford; twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Western Twirlers Dance Club, 1801 W. 2nd St., Joplin, MO.

Helen Torrence

Mrs. Helen Udene Torrence, 91, of Aubrey, Texas formerly of McDonald County Missouri, departed this life on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at the Whitesboro Care Center in Whitesboro, Texas, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Helen entered this life on June 1, 1925, in Jane, Missouri, born to the union of the late Fred and Martha (Plummer) Copeland. She was raised on a farm near Jane and was a graduate of Pineville High School. She furthered her education at the University of Arkansas, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Education. She taught home economics and art both in Missouri and Oklahoma. On November 10, 1985 she was united in marriage to Henry Joseph Torrence and together they shared twelve years before his passing on January 23, 1998. She resided in Walnut Grove, Missouri before moving to Denton, Texas in 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Jack and Bill Copeland.

Helen is survived by her three stepdaughters, Theresa Tucker of Ft. Worth, Texas, Connie Weber of Avondale, Arizona and Vanessa Torrence of Aubrey, Texas; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a sister in-law, Betty Copeland of Dewey, Oklahoma; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Torrence are 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Pastor Marilyn O’Brien officiating. Jennifer Jaryno

Jennifer Dorothy Jaryno, age 33, of Lamar, Missouri, passed away Friday, November 18, 2016, at her home.

Jennifer was born February 5, 1983, in Denver, Colorado, to Thomas and Cynthia (Rezzer) Jaryno. After graduating from Dakota Ridge High School, Dakota Ridge, Colorado, in 2001, she moved to San Diego, California where she worked in computer services at San Diego Credit Union. In 2014, Jennifer moved to Lamar to be near family.

Survivors include her daughter, Jaya Rivers of San Diego; her mother, Cindy Fowler of Lamar; grandparents, Gene and Dorothy Cope of Milford; a sister, Sarah Jaryno of Lamar; a niece, Brandy, and a nephew, Anthony; and aunt, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Milford Christian Church, 758 E. Highway C, with Cliff Hazard officiating.

Lillian Diederich

Mrs. Lillian J. Diederich, 93, of Grandview, Missouri, formerly of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Monday, November 21, 2016, at the Beautiful Savior Care Center in Belton, Missouri, after a recent decline in health.


Lillian entered this life on April 16, 1923, in Morris, Oklahoma, one of five children born to the late John Harrison and Cora (Hull) Owen. She was raised and attended school in Carl Junction, Missouri. On December 28, 1941, she was united in marriage to Sylvester William “Bud” Diederich, whom she had only known for eight days, a marriage that would endure the next sixty-eight years. They resided in Kansas, California, Washington and Oregon before returning home to Joplin in 1955. Throughout her life she was a devoted homemaker and caregiver to the elderly. She volunteered at area nursing homes and for over twenty-five years she and Bud delivered Meals and Wheels to the area homebound. She had a great love for people and was always lending a hand to people in need. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin and upon moving to Grandview she became an active member at Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son, Terry; two sisters, Arlie Frizzell and Helen Spence; two brothers, Earl and John Owen; and a daughter in-law, Anita Diederich.


Lillian is survived by her son, Craig Diederich and wife, Becky, of Grandview, Missouri; six grandchildren and spouses, Renita Hale, Jacob Blume, Kurtis Blume, Jay Diederich, Christina Tompkins and Jessica Holden; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.


Funeral Mass for Mrs. Diederich will be held on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Coronation of our Lady Catholic Church in Grandview, Missouri, Father Stephen Hansen officiating. Calvin Ackerson

Calvin C. Ackerson, 91, Seneca, MO, passed into eternal rest at 9:30am, November 20, 2016 at Webb City Health & Rehab after a short illness.

Calvin Clay Ackerson was born August 12, 1925 in Seneca, MO the son of Charles J. and Goldie Ackerson. Calvin was a Navy Veteran serving his country during WW II. He also served for 12 years on the Seneca City Council. During that time, he served several years as Mayor Pro-tem. Calvin served as a Pastor 63 years. He was instrumental in building churches all over the world. He was the Pastor at Evangel Temple, Greeley, Co from 1971-1984; Peoria Assembly of God from 1984-2014 and also was the Pastor of Seneca Assembly of God, Eastside Assembly of God and the Peoria District. Calvin was also known for his love of painting. Calvin painted several murals on Seneca Businesses portraying early scenes of Seneca. 

 
Calvin C. Ackerson married Freida Mae McElhany July 18, 1947 in the State of Washington and she preceded him in death September 9, 2006.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Gates, Seneca; three sons, David W. Ackerson and wife Dolly; Donald N. Ackerson and wife, Connie and Daniel R. Ackerson and wife Denise all of Seneca; 11 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Calvin was preceded in death by one brother, Clifford Ackerson; one sister, Genevieve Rogers and one son-in-law Roger Gates.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 pm, Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Seneca Assembly of God.

Destin Shryock

Charles "Destin" David Shryock, age 22, Carl Junction, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016, at his home.

Destin was born August 24, 1994 in Joplin, he attended Carl Junction Schools, and worked at Kohl's Department Store in Joplin. He was an avid Seattle Seahawks fan, and loved fishing. He was devoted to his family, and was always there to add a smile to everyone's face. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Rosa Shryock, uncles, Monte England and Craig Shryock.

Survivors include his parents, Kathie England-Hinds and Johnny Hinds, father, David Shryock; siblings, Kallie McDaniel and husband Michael, Macie Shryock and Braxton Isley, Courtney Hinds, Hadlee Hinds, Johnny Hinds, Trinnatea England, Raden England all of Carl Junction; special sisters, Ronnie Burwick and Vannatea Burwick; grandparents, Charles and Bonnie England; uncles, Richard England and wife Judy, Ronald England and wife Diana, Rusty England and wife Debbie all of Carl Junction, Mark Shryock and wife Joan of Stella, Missouri; aunts, Betty Deiter and Allene Lawson; nieces and nephews, Bailee McDaniel, Khloe McDaniel, Ryder McDaniel, Rowan Bruffy, and baby Isley; several cousins and other family members.

Lyle LaFon

Lyle W. LaFon, 60, passed away November 20, 2016 in Joplin, Missouri. 

Lyle was born April 9, 1956 in Carthage, Missouri to Wayne LaFon and Betty “Donalson” LaFon. Although he was raised in the Dudenville Community, he lived in Carthage all of his adult life. Lyle worked as a foreman for Leggett & Platt Branch One for 37 years and was a member of the White Oak Presbyterian Church, southeast of Dudenville. He studied music at MSSU, enjoyed hunting and fishing and made a trip to Canada to moose hunt. 

Lyle was united in marriage to Sandra M. Pickering on November 5, 1989 in Jasper, Missouri; she survives. Lyle is survived by his mother Betty, one daughter Karen Foster and husband Bob of Bentonville, Arkansas, four sons Lyle Wesley LaFon and wife Anna of Lonoke, Arkansas, David Pickering and wife Dawn of Seneca, Missouri, Kevin Pickering and wife Molly of Royers, Arkansas, Scott Pickering and his wife Wendy of Cave Springs, Arkansas, eleven grandchildren Kaleb, Justin, Ali, Emali, Joshua, Sara, Abbi, Glen, Mitchel, Chance, Melanie, and Pauleen, one brother Leslie LaFon and wife Janet and one sister Lora Howerton and husband Ron, both of Carthage. Lyle was preceded in death by his father, Wayne LaFon, in 2006.

Patty Keys

Patty Ann Keys, age 82, Joplin, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Park Meadows in Kansas City, Kansas.

Patty was born January 29, 1934 in Grand Island, Nebraska, daughter of the late John and Edna Nelson. She attended Joplin Schools and graduated from Joplin High School in 1952. She then attended Cottey College before graduated from Joplin Business College. Patty worked for First National Bank, Newman's Department Store, J.C. Penney, and Tri-State Motor. She was a member of First Community Church, and a very active volunteer for St. John's Hospital. She was a former member of St. John's R.S.V.P., Credit Women's Organization, Ladies of the Shrine Club, Ladies Elks, Silver Hair Legislative, Women's Club of Joplin, Joplin Credit Women's Organization, Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Joplin Business Women.

Patty enjoyed playing bridge with friends, (four times a week), bowling, and was a talented seamstress who was known for her doll clothing, and making outfits for the Ladies Elk's Christmas Program.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

Inurnment of her ashes will be at a later date in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.

Marilyn Berry

Marilyn Berry, 77, passed away November 20, 2016 at her home in Joplin, Missouri. Marilyn was born in Shattuck, OK to Charles Roberson and Fern Bishop Roberson November 26, 1938. She was a longtime Joplin resident.

Everyone that knew Marilyn Berry has heard the phrase "Don and Marilyn's Workshop . . . Don works, Marilyn Shops". It was even the recorded message on her answering machine, even though it couldn't be further from the truth. Daycare owner, beautician, employee at Precious Moments Chapel, co-owner of a diesel company and a talented painter are just a few of the job titles on her resume, but what she enjoyed most was being a homemaker. She spent hours keeping multiple gardens, decorating and then re-decorating, finding any new recipe she could make and watching her grandkids and great grandkids grow. She was a seamstress, storyteller, cheerleader, advice giver, and so much more. She built a life of memories for not only herself, but for her family. To know her was to love her. She had the purest heart whose love came with no expectations, just a hug that held on a little tighter.

Marilyn was united in marriage to Don Berry August 19, 1956 in Syracuse, MO; he survives.

Marilyn is survived by two brothers Gary Roberson of Colorado Springs, CO and Roy Roberson of Lake Village, AR, one daughter Connie Hammond of Springfield, MO, two sons Chris Berry and wife Valerie and Michael Berry Sr. all of Carthage, seven grandchildren Andrea, Caleb, Seth, Mike Jr, Madi, Lindsey, Keisha, eight great grandchildren Eli, Ace, Kenzie, Max, Harley, Sutton, Brinley, and Emersyn.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents and one brother Charles Roberson Jr. .

Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 25, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.

Stephen Brown

Stephen Brown, age 99, Joplin, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2016 at Mercy Hospital.

Stephen was born February 10, 1917 in Gloster, Louisiana to the late Ollie Brown and Elizabeth Adams Brown and had lived in Joplin since 1945, moving from Shreveport, Louisiana.

He worked at the former First National Bank and Trust Company for nineteen years, retiring in 1981. Stephen was a longtime member and Deacon Emeritus at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. He was a past president of the NAACP; past Grand Master of Myrtle Lodge #149, AF & AM; and Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Joplin. Stephen was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.

He married Ethel L. Sabbath on January 27, 1936 in Gloster, Louisiana. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2008.

Stephen was also preceded in death by two daughters, Equilla Brown and Dorothy Fowler; a grandson, Michael Land; and siblings, Dan Brown, Richard Brown, Arch Brown, James Brown, Hastine McCall, Samantha Hall, Nataniel Lilton and Ollie May Bryant.

Survivors include his children, Herman Brown and wife, Dixie, Raytown, Missouri, Eliza Melson and husband, Charles, Joplin, Stephen Brown, Jr. and wife, Shirley, Kansas City, Perry Brown, Olathe, Kansas, Wanda Williams, Grandview, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Services are planned for Monday at11:00 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church. Rev. Samuel Nero, Jr. and Rev. B.G. Roberson will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Pallbearers will be Bruce Land, Matthew Williams, Simon Williams, Keith Brown, Vincent Brown and Craig Byers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tre Weathers, Tristan Weathers, Jeffrey Brown, Lamonte Ratcliff, Anthony Weathers and Stephen Cockrell.

Our loved one was waiting for his angels to come get him, he will be missed by all.

Randy Blevins

Richard Randall Blevins, II (Randy) passed away on Thursday, November 17th, 2016 at West Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was born on March 5th, 1947 in Joplin, MO to Richard and Enid Boswell Blevins. He graduated from Carl Junction High School, and went on to the University of Missouri-Rolla. He received his degree in Chemical Engineering and later went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management. After a successful career, he retired to Iowa in 2014. Some of Randy's hobbies and enjoyments included playing the trumpet, working on his Corvettes, reading, watching the Saint Louis Cardinals, all animals, but most of all, he loved his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Barb of West Des Moines, Iowa; his daughter Cari Bergman, and husband Jon, of West Des Moines; his son, Cory Blevins, and wife Kristie, Davenport, IA; his mother Enid Blevins of Joplin, and his 5 grandchildren : Taylor, Avery, Adison, Blake and Kinley.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary with family receiving friends starting at 9:00 a.m. up to service time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Randy’s name to the Animal Rescue of your choice.

Linda McMillian

Linda Frances McMillian, age 66 of Neosho, died Nov. 22, 2016 at Carthage Health and Rehab in Carthage, following an illness. 

 Linda was born July 7, 1950 in Santa Ana, California, the daughter of John and Nelda L. (Weiser) Wyatt. She was a teacher and last taught at Noel, Missouri. She loved playing cards; watching movies and old shows; learning to quilt; doing things for others and keeping in touch with family and friends. She was a member of the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church. 

 Linda and Sam McMillian were married on May 18, 1974 in Neosho and he survives. Additional survivors include four children, Steven Adam McMillian, Amanda Dawn McMillian, Melony Ann McMillian and James Ernest McMillian and wife, Marissa Ann; one brother, John Wyatt and wife, Nancy and four sisters, Susan Keith Philliber, Rebecca Ann O’Dell and husband, Randy; Deborah Lynn Wyatt and Cheryl Priscilla Lupton and husband, John. She is preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Sarah June McMillan. 

 Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 at 10 am at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, Pastor Ken Robinson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Neosho Memorial Park Cemetery, south of Neosho. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 7 pm at the Clark Funeral Home, Neosho. Alan Osborne

Alan Brent Osborne, 62, passed away November 22, 2016 at his home in Carthage, Missouri. Alan was born at Hamilton  Air Force Base in San Rafael, California, on May 27, 1954 to Hugh and Charolette “Breeze” Osborne.

Alan was a longtime resident of Carthage, graduated from Carthage High School in 1972, attended the University of Missouri where he attained his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage.

Alan is survived by his sister Teresa Ford, one nephew Luke Ford, both of Carthage, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral arrangements are pending notification of family and friends. Arrangements will be under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.

Billie French

Billie Francis French age 86 of Joplin, Mo passed away Monday November 21, 2016 at the National Health Care Nursing Home Joplin, Mo. 

She was born on February 27, 1930 in Joplin, Mo the daughter of Sylvia Jones. Billie attended Joplin school growing up. She married Albert French on November 30, 1946 in Joplin, Mo. Together they were ordained Pentecostal Ministers and served on several mission trips together, he preceded her in death on July 15, 1980. She earned her Missionettes Leadership Certificate and served with Women’s Ministries Department for several years. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Joplin and later led church service at Messenger Tower. 

She was also preceded in death by her mom, two sons: Phillip and Bill French, a daughter Nancy Derrick, two sisters: Norma Sadler and Betty Wilson. She is survived by a son Charles French and wife Tassnee of Thailand, a brother Tommy Jones of Joplin, Mo, two sisters: Joan McMullen-Thompson and husband Tommy of Joplin, Mo and Evelyn Allen of Kansas City, Mo, Several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Pm Wednesday November 30, 2016 at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory with Boyd Crook officiating. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to service time at the Mortuary. The family suggests contributions to the Messenger Tower the Touch of the Masters Hand. In care of the mortuary. Arrangements entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Herman Killingsworth

Herman Dewey Killingsworth, age 80, Webb City, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital.

Herman was born February 6, 1936 in Carthage, Missouri, son of the late George Dewey Killingsworth and Edna Mae Benedict Killingsworth. He graduated from Carthage High School, worked for the Carthage Police Department, then worked as an investigator for MFA Insurance Company. He then worked as Chief Deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department. He also spent several years as a truck driver for C.F.I. before retiring as Director of the Transportation Training Department at Crowder College in Neosho. He enjoyed the outdoors, and spending time with his grandkids. In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Raymond.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Killingsworth, whom he married September 30, 1980; daughter, Angela Killingsworth of Webb City; grandchildren, Tabatha Killingsworth-Campbell and husband Jeffrey of Carl Junction, Amisha Killingsworth of Carthage, and Danika Killingsworth of Lawton, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Hunter Herman Killingsworth, Aizeah Dewey Killingsworth, Serkan Ayden Kurt, Sophia Liann Campbell, Amirah Lynn Teeter; step-sons, Jack Van Hooser and wife Brenda of Coweta, Oklahoma, David Van Hooser and wife Loretta of Sand Springs, Oklahoma.

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
