Stevie Marie Meredith, age 42, Joplin, MO was born on June 3, 1983, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Steven and Allison (Lake) Smith. Stevie passed away on May 25, 2026, in Kansas City, Kansas.

Stevie lived a life marked by care, hospitality, and sincere devotion to the people around her. She had a natural gift for making others feel welcome, comfortable, and valued, and she carried that gift into every part of her life. Whether she was opening her home, preparing a meal, or offering thoughtful words, she did so with a gracious spirit that reflected the best of who she was. Her presence had a way of making ordinary moments feel special, and her absence will be felt profoundly by all who knew her.

Among the many things Stevie loved, caring for babies held a special place in her heart. She was gentle, attentive, and deeply nurturing, and she found joy in the simple and meaningful work of tending to little ones. She also loved cooking. Meals prepared by Stevie were more than food. They were expressions of love, comfort, and togetherness, often shared in the company of family and friends.

Stevie was also known for her love of entertaining and hosting. She took great pride in bringing people together and creating gatherings that felt warm, joyful, and memorable. Holidays were especially dear to her, and she loved hosting them for everyone. She understood the importance of tradition, celebration, and shared time, and she made those occasions feel full of life and meaning. Her home was often a place where laughter, conversation, and good food came together, and many cherished memories were made under her care.

She was a thoughtful gift giver, always remembering the small details that made a person feel seen and appreciated. Stevie had a remarkable ability to choose gifts that reflected genuine understanding and affection.

Stevie also had a love for plants, and she appreciated the beauty and calm they brought into a home. She enjoyed tending to them and watching them grow, finding satisfaction in their quiet resilience and natural grace. In many ways, her care for plants reflected the way she lived her life, with patience, attention, and a deep appreciation for growth and beauty in everyday things.

Along with her parents, Stevie is survived by her beloved husband, Kyle Meredith; children, Aurora Ellington, Jaxson Ellington (Sophia), and EvieLynne Meredith; grandchildren, Bea Ellington; siblings, Ben McCarty and Mia Wireman; and best friend, Geoff Crowder.

She grew up in Richland, Missouri and graduated from Richland High in 1954. She was a certified cosmetologist and graduate of the Springfield Beauty Academy.

Johann’s pride and joy was her family, who looked to her as a steady, kind, and honest presence in their lives. Her determination and unstoppable work ethic was matched by her boundless generosity and loving support towards her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Johann loved tending to her perfectly manicured yard – her home, garden, flowers, and the local birds brought her endless entertainment and peace. The deer and squirrels loved her yard as much as she did–they will miss her, but the feeling probably would not be mutual.

Kay Wells

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

On May 26, 2026, Kay Wells, 91, departed this earthly realm with a hoot and a bang. After a final swig of her home cough remedy (compliments of her old friend Jack Daniels), and a last look at her favorite eye candy (a cardboard stand-up of Rege-Jean Page), Kay was outta here.

She raised four children with love, sacrifice, and reminders of: “Dummy up”; “I’m gonna twist a knot in your tail”; and “Can’t never did anything.”

She was devoted through thick and thin in her 61 years of marriage to her high school sweetheart, Jerry. She enjoyed eight peaceful years after his death. She enjoyed time with her ever growing family and dear friends. However, she most enjoyed her own company, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, reading, and watching her beloved Cardinals on TV with her two cats, Katy and Beckett. She lived independently until the end as that was the only way she would have it. We will always hear her contagious laughter most remembered as she was reading Erma Bombeck in the Joplin Globe (a daily ritual.) The sounds of Randy Travis and Vince Gill will also be a warm reminder of her.

Kay was exceedingly bright, had a keen sense of humor, and was generous and kind. We marveled at her uncanny recall of every address where she had lived since birth, phone numbers, birthdates of family and friends, and the exact location of any item in her home. Kay took in and cared for many, many cats and dogs through her life. For those she couldn’t she gave of her time and treasure. She had a strong sense of right and wrong, and how to treat others and instilled these values in her children and grandchildren. Her love, humor, wisdom, presence, and big warm hugs will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

She is survived by her children, Craig Wells and wife, Mona (Cape Girardeau MO); Scott Wells and wife, Kirsten (Joplin); Karen Wells Fisher (Joplin); and Anne Wells (Joplin.) Grandchildren Kurt Wells and wife, Cathryn (Colorado Springs CO), Kyle Wells (Sikeston MO), Avery Wells and wife, Meghan (Kansas City MO), Aren Wells and fiancée, Paige (Chicago IL), Jerad Fisher (Joplin MO), Blake Fisher and wife, Lexus (Joplin MO), Meghan Wells and wife, McKaela (Knoxville TN.) Great grandchildren, Ari and Eden Wells (Colorado Springs, CO), Nadia Wells (Kansas City MO), Veryn and Hudson Fisher (Joplin MO), and Milo Wells (expected to make his arrival at any time in Knoxville, TN.)

In lieu of flowers, Kay requested that memorial contributions be made to the Joplin Humane Society. In honor of her wishes no memorial service will be held. A book is available to sign at Mason-Woodard mortuary.

Chestley Styles

(From Ozark Funeral Home)

Chestley Sinnott Styles was born November 25, 1923, in Camden, Arkansas, the first son of Chestley Key Styles and Allie Blanche (House) Styles. He was 102 when he died on May 3, 2026, at his home in Rosamond, California.

After graduating in only three-and-a-half years from high school in Buckeye, Arizona, Chestley enlisted in the army; he was just 19 years old. He served during World War II as a machine gunner guarding the perimeter of General George Patton’s Third Army headquarters in Europe. One of Chestley’s favorite stories from the war was about meeting General Patton and showing him the features of the “Quad Fifty” anti-aircraft weapon he operated.

In December 1945, Chestley’s army service ended. His awards included the Bronze Star, Victory Medal, good-conduct medal, and four battle stars for the European Theater of Operations.

Following the war, Chestley married Juline Marston. They made their home in Palmdale, California. Chestley secured a job in the Palmdale office of the Los Angeles County Road Department, a job that provided security for a family that grew to include seven children. Tragically, Juline died in 1968, when she was just 37 years old. Chestley later married Juanita Sutton, who died last August.

During his life, Chestley valued hard work and integrity. He was a life member of the Catholic fraternal organization the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included fishing and hunting, and he enjoyed going out into the desert to practice target shooting. He also enjoyed music from the big-band era: Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman were some of his favorites.

Chestley’s was preceded in death by two brothers and sisters-in-law—Marcus “Mark” Styles, Maureen Styles, William “Bill” Styles, and Glenna Pruitt—a grandson, Nicholas Frye; a great-granddaughter, Astrid Groves; a son-in-law, John Frye; and a brother-in-law, Paul Morse.

He is survived by seven children: Linda Marston-Reid and her husband Scott of Mexico, Marian Styles and her husband John Shannon of Virginia, Kathryn Fisher and her husband Larry of Kentucky, Joe Styles of California, Martha Frye of Tennessee, John Styles of California, and Teresa Dale of Florida. His legacy also continues with nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Diane Morse of Washington, as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Chestley might well want to say to those who carry on: “I always did the best I knew how.”

Burial will be Friday, June 5, 11 a.m. at Butler Creek Cemetery, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas.

Steve Jordan

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

With deep love and heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of Stephen Wayne Jordan, a devoted husband, father, Pop-Pop, and friend. Steve succumbed to illness at the age of 76 at his home in Joplin, surrounded by his loving family on May 26, 2026, following a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.

He worked in grocery store management, starting as a meat cutter at age 15, learning the business and advancing rapidly to become a store manager in his early 20s. He continued to run and manage stores for nearly 40 years. Toward the end of his career, he worked as the supervisor of the grounds crew at Missouri Southern State University, a job he truly enjoyed.

He is also survived by a sister, Mary Hayes, and brother-in-law, Lyman Hayes of Joplin, Missouri.

Steve was an avid fly-fisherman and bird hunter, billiards player, and Chiefs fan who enjoyed the great outdoors and building lifelong memories with his family. In his retirement, Steve could be found cruising the Caribbean, shaking down a slot machine, or tying his own flies for the next family fishing trip to Roaring River. In his later years, nothing brought Steve more joy than his grandchildren, and he took immense pride in each of their latest accomplishments and adventures. He will forever be remembered as an honest, hardworking man with an unwavering love and devotion to his loved ones. Sylvia Roberts

(From Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home)

Sylvia Diane Roberts, 86, of Reston, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, surrounded by family.

Sylvia was born in Wichita, Kansas, on December 15, 1939, to Wilmer Glenn Brice and Leona Ruth Brice (née Zane). She spent much of her childhood in Baxter Springs with her mother and stepfather, Dr. Robert R. Brookshire, enjoying many happy hours at the public library and Saturday matinees at the movie theater.

After high school - where she acted in school plays, endured a physics teacher who believed women should not be taking his class, and skipped gym class whenever possible - she attended the University of Kansas earning a bachelor's degree in psychology.

Post-college, Sylvia moved to Kansas City, where she met a man she would marry and have two sons with. She soon discovered, however, that her husband was not the man he had pretended to be, and the marriage ended in divorce.

Determined to build a better future for herself and her boys, she pursued higher education despite being advised by a graduate school advisor at Washington University in St. Louis to stay home and raise her children instead of entering the master's program. Sylvia ignored the advice, enrolled, and ultimately earned her Master's Degree in Social Work.

Within a few years, Sylvia rose to become Chief of Social Services for Johnson County, Kansas, dedicating her professional life to helping others and advocating for those in need. While attending Washington University, she also met the man who would become her beloved husband, Milton W. Roberts. They married in 1973 and shared many happy years together until his passing in 2007. Through their marriage, Sylvia became a devoted stepmother to Milt's daughter, Danielle, while Milt became a loving father figure to her two sons.

After completing their degrees, Sylvia and Milt moved the family from St. Louis to Kansas City. After their youngest child left for college, they moved to Washington, D.C., where they both worked for a private company that operated group homes for people with developmental disabilities.

In retirement, Milt and Sylvia moved back to Kansas City, where Milt passed away. Sylvia then spent her time taking art classes, caring for her mother, and enjoying the company of her sister Sharon and niece Serena. She also volunteered with the Assistance League of Kansas City.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sylvia enjoyed doll collecting, gardening, spoiling her cats, bowling, researching genealogy, and she loved watching competitive ice skating, theater, ballet, movies and football.

Sylvia is survived by her children, Danielle Smith (David), Michael Strelow (Ruthy Tyre), and Todd Strelow (Ed Crump); her grandchildren, Milton, Marcus, and Diana; her great-grandchildren; her siblings, Betty-Anne Tague (Gary), Mary Lou McDonald (Mark), Robert R. Brookshire II (Marijo), and Sharon Carmichael; as well as extended family and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

Sylvia will be remembered for her intelligence, resilience, humor, and adventurous spirit. She was always ready for a new experience and brought warmth and laughter wherever she went, especially through her unforgettable laugh. She believed deeply in caring for people who were disadvantaged, rejected prejudice and bigotry in all forms, and raised her children to think independently and compassionately.

Sylvia will be laid to rest at Seneca Cemetery on June 1, at 2 p.m. A graveside memorial service will precede the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
