Joshua Shira

Joshua Levi Shira, age 27 of Wyandotte, OK, passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.

Born April 22, 1988 in Joplin he lived in the Joplin area his lifetime. Joshua worked as a stocker for G&W Foods in Seneca and had previously worked for Joplin Humane Society and for Wendy's in Neosho. He was a Christian.

On August 8, 2008 he married the former Candy Ann Fernside at Carthage. She survives.

Additional survivors include three children, Tyler Montgomery, Zach Morris and Gage Fair; his mother, Mindy A. Darnaby of Joplin; two brothers, Aidyn Cole Shira and Caleb Shira; three sisters, Chantel Ring of Granby, MO, Brittany Felton and husband Kevin of Joplin and Caylina Elizabeth Shira; maternal grandparents, Judy and Gary Ring of Granby; maternal grandfather, Keith Nance of Joplin; paternal grandparents, Sam Shira of Galena, KS, Stella Brotherton of Vinita, OK; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Dale Shira.

Funeral services will be held 6:00 p.m. Saturday at Parker Chapel with Ira Hawkins officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Joplin Humane Society.

Gregory Schaut

Gregory John Schaut, age 62 of Neosho, died Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was an electrician.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Burial of ashes will be at the Fort Scott National Cemetery at a later date.

Georgia Shadwick

Georgia Alberta Shadwick, 94, Neosho, died May 28, 2015 at her home in Neosho, following an illness. 

Georgia was born February 24, 1921 in Center Point, Iowa. Georgia was a homemaker and she and her husband enjoyed dancing in years past. She enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Georgia married Homer Shadwick on April 10, 1946 and he preceded her in death on April 11, 2008. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Mobley and Pat Staver; three sisters; five grandchildren, Autumn Wood, Laura Stroud, Karen Gaskin, Alan Kula and Ashley Mobley; four great grandchildren, Kayden Wood, London Mobley, Dustin Gaskin and Shilah Stroud and three sisters. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Anna Gage.

No services are planned at this time.

Doris Whithorn

Doris Jean Whithorn, 77, Neosho, died May 29, 2015 at Medicalodge in Neosho, following four months of ill health. 

Doris was born Oct. 18, 1937 in Kansas, the daughter of Homer J. and Lenora (Whitson) Whithorn. She lived most of her life in the southwest Missouri area and graduated from Granby High School. She worked in the food service for Neosho Public Schools and retired in 1999. Doris enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews, collecting lighthouses, gardening and cats. 

She is survived by a sister, Helen Jelley of Neosho; sister in law, Daisy Whithorn of Winfield, Kansas; nieces and nephews, Sharon Otten and husband, Jamie of Neosho; Diana Payton of Neosho; Molly England of Plano, Texas; Bonnie Bryant and husband, Dennis of Winfield, Kansas; Homer Whithorn and wife, Kim of Topeka, Kansas; Danny Whithorn and wife, Doreen of Omaha, Nebraska; Steve Gossman and wife, Veta of Scott City, Kansas and Gerald Gossman and wife, Norma of Garden City, Kansas and numerous great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Irene Gossman and one brother, John Whithorn.

Edith Waggoner

Edith Allene Waggoner, 91, passed away May 28, 2015 in Joplin, MO. 

Edith was born February 22, 1924 in Miller, MO to Guy V. Pettit Sr. and Ada P (Jones) Pettit. She was born and raised in Miller, spent time in Carthage, and Lamar area and had been in Joplin for the last 5 years. Edith was a seamstress and worked at Big Smith Manufacturing for 20 years. She attended the Masters Touch Ministries in Joplin. She enjoyed fishing and family get togethers. 

Edith was united in marriage to James Preston Waggoner July 19, 1942 in Lamar Missouri he preceded her in death July 11, 1992. Edith is survived by one son Larry Waggoner of Joplin, MO, two grandchildren Anne Shipman of Joplin and Paul Waggoner of Webb City, three great granddaughters Anovia, Brianna and Jade all of Joplin, several nieces and nephews. Edith is preceded by her parents and husband two sisters Freda Stamate of Sacramento, CA, and Virginia Clements of Lamar, MO, one brother Guy V. Pettit Jr. of Martinez, CA, one grandson Bryan Waggoner

Lorrain Duff

Lorrain Duff, age 85, Joplin, passed away at 11:40 p.m. Sunday, May 24, 2015 at a local nursing center after a long, loving life.

Mrs. Duff was born May 9, 1930 in Stone County, Missouri to the late Sydney Gillette and Marie Hosick Gillette and had lived in the Joplin area since the mid 1950's.

A homemaker, Lorrain worked hard to maintain the home while raising four sons, finishimg her degree and teaching school for several years. She also worked for World Book Encyclopedias in sales and training.

Lorrain was an active and faithful member of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women's Club.

She married Rogers Duff on May 21, 1947 in Monett, Missouri. He survives at the home.

Additional survivors include four sons, George Edward Duff, Carthage, Steven Rogers Duff, Joplin, David Duff, Joplin, Phillip Alan Duff and his wife, Chrissie, Joplin; seven grandchildren, Rachael, Mollie, Jake, Gretchen, Jordan, Max, Paris; and three great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Lorrain was preceded in death by an infant son, Douglas Knight; two brothers and one sister.

Services are planned for Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Byers Avenue United Methodist Church. Max Rainey will officiate. Interment will follow at Sarcoxie Cemetery. The sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. Thursday at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Byers Avenue United Methodist Church.

Joan Renick

Joan (Goostree) Renick, 86, of Neosho, passed away on May 22, 2015, following a long illness. 

She was born September 17, 1928 in Wheaton, Missouri to Floyd and Mary Goostree. She graduated from Neosho High School, Class of 1947. Joan worked for J C Penney’s in Neosho and Joplin before marrying John D. Renick in 1953 in Granby. John worked for Shell Pipeline Co. and they lived in several states during his career, finally retiring back in Neosho in 1984. Joan enjoyed bowling, earning many awards, and she enjoyed traveling. 

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jody and Jo Renick, Kingwood, TX; two grandsons, Justin Renick and wife, Chy and Jonathan Renick; and two great grandsons.

Mary Lou Breyer

Mary Lou Breyer, 83, went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 25, 2015 surrounded by loved ones. 

Mary Lou was born on March 31, 1932. She was an educator to her very core. She was a 32 year veteran in the profession and loved it dearly. She taught remedial reading and elementary education in several districts throughout her time, mostly staying around the Springfield area. She valued her school children, and their education more than anything else. She also went on to meet her husband, Lyle Breyer, during her time as a school teacher. They were married on May 25, 1967. Mary Lou also had a soft spot for her “adopted family” and her church family. She was an active member of the choir and used her voice to connect with her Savior. She loved gospels and hymns and felt closest to Him when listening to them. 

Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Breyer, and her parents. Survivors include her best friend, Nora (Mozelle) Sandlin, Nora’s children, John Sandlin (Marinda Sandlin), Sandy Mills (John Mills), Tammy Berry (Rick Berry), and Timothy Sandlin (Maria Sandlin). She was also “Grandma Mary Lou” to Brad Toler, Jonathan Sandlin (Kara Sandlin), Monica Wyatt (Andrew Wyatt), Grant Berry and Mozie and Ruby Sandlin, Eduardo and Christian Vazguez Hernandez.

Bob Quillin

Robert A. Quillin passed away Monday May 25, at his home near Lamar, Mo. 

Bob was born October 4th, 1946 in Lamar, Mo, to Orville and Lucille (Vincent) Quillin. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield in 1969. In August of 1969 Bob married Cheryl Robison and celebrated their 45th anniversary this past year. To this union were born two daughters, Jill and Elizabeth. Bob was a cattleman, rancher, teacher and realtor. He was a member of many civic and professional organizations and was active in the Masonic Lodge of Jasper, Scottish Rite Valley of Joplin, and Abou Ben Adhem Shrine. Bob was enjoyable to be with. He loved having a good time and seeing other have good time. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob is survived by his wife Cheryl of the home and his two daughters, Jill Clements and husband Tom of Arvada , CO, and Elizabeth Klein and husband Josh of O’Fallon, MO.

Mary Ivy

Mary Ellen Shively LaMarr Ivy, age 82 of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 22, 2015 following an illness.

Mary Ellen was born on September 18, 1932 to the late Jacob Amos Shively and Ethel Hester Lamb in Joplin. She was raised in "New Addition" just north of Joplin, working hard all her life. Mary was a loving sister, aunt, mother and grandmother, taking care of her family's every need. She worked at Keller's BBQ, and later as an inspector at Miller's Manufacturing. She loved her pets, going to church, arts & crafts and gardening.

Surviving Mary is her brother Raymond Shively, her daughters, Judi Ekhoff & husband, Larry: Teresa Parker & husband, Tim: sons, Tim LaMarr & wife, Tracey, Roy Ivy and wife, Cindy; and Phillip Ivy; grandchildren, Shadron and Joanna Ekhoff, Ryan and Simin Ekhoff, James LaMarr, Jaden LaMarr, Adam Parker and Toni, Eric Parker and Savanna, and Kaylee Wright and Mac; 10 great-grandchildren and many, many extended family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Ivy Jr.; brother, Amos Shively and a sister, Martha Jane Neff.

Graveside services are planned for Wednesday, May 27th at 11:00 A.M. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Family will receive friends Tuesday between 6-7:00 P.M. at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Independent Living Center, Joplin, MO.

Dixie Sparks

Dixie Marie Sparks, age 85, of Lamar, MO died Friday, May 22, 2015 at her home following an illness.

Dixie was born June 30, 1929 at El Dorado Springs, MO, to Royston Thompson and Gladys I (McCudy) Thompson. She grew up and attended school in El Dorado Springs. On November 15, 1952, she married Lindsey Clyde Sparks at Nevada, MO and together, they raised three children. Lindsey preceded her in death March 29, 2002. Dixie’s passion was bowling. She bowled many years with her children, grandchildren and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, board games, crocheting and plastic canvas. Dixie was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves as well as the Springfield Cardinals and was involved in her grandchildren’s sports. She always had a smile for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Robert (Amy) Sparks, Sheldon, MO; two daughters, Linda Enochs & Roger Box, Marshall, TX and Janice (Wayne) Seaton, Lamar, MO; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, William “Bud” (Maxine) Thompson, Nevada, MO and James (Virginia) Thompson, El Dorado, MO; two sisters, Alice Meek, Pittsburg, KS and Martha Sparks, Lamar, MO; numerous nieces, nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Lindsey, she was preceded in death by her parents in the 80’s.

Louise DeVries

Louise Broadwater DeVries age 87 of Joplin, Missouri passed away Friday May 22, 2015 at the home of her daughter surrounded by family members.

She was born January 31, 1928 in Carthage, Missouri to the late Benjamin and Rosie Mae (Mabie) Broadwater.

Louise was a homemaker, wife and mother. She cherished her children and her grandchildren. She delighted in family gatherings and a house full of laughter.

She married Paul DeVries on February 10, 1948 in Joplin, Missouri and he preceded her in death on August 1, 2011. She was also preceded in death by six brothers, and three sisters.

Dale Randall

Clarence "Dale" Randall, age 89 of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin following a sudden illness.

Dale was born March 19, 1926 to the late Cecil Randall and Cloe Roten Randall in Ritchie, Missouri. Dale worked for Empire Electric, retiring after 35 years of service. He was of the Catholic faith and served our country in the U.S. Navy.

In September of 1947, Dale married Betty Lou Hatfield in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on October 23, 1998.

Dale is survived by a son, Donald R. Randall and his wife Linda of Joplin; daughter, Marilynn Cargile, also of Joplin; grandchildren, Ronald and Randall Nichols and Sean and Ritchie Randall; 9 great-grandchildren and many extended family and friends.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Wanda Caldwell

Wanda Pearl Caldwell, 82, Neosho, passed away May 16, 2015, following a short illness. 

Wanda was born March 21, 1933 in Picher, Oklahoma, the sixth of eight children to Robert and Hazel (Clark) Kirk. She attended schools in Granby, Missouri and on June 9, 1950, married Curtis Stephen Caldwell in Neosho and two children were born of this marriage, Stephen Caldwell, Jr and Sheree Lynn Caldwell-Buhr. She and Curtis spent the early part of their married life traveling and working on the pipe lines. They returned to Neosho in 1956 and she was a homemaker. She worked briefly as a manicurist and Curtis was a self-employed carpenter in the Neosho area. In later years, Wanda loved to work in her yard and play cards with friends and especially loved visiting with her great granddaughters. She was a Christian and previously attended the First Christian Church of Neosho. 

Wanda is preceded in death by her husband, Curtis in December, 1996, her parents and five siblings, Dorthea Kirk, Gerald Kirk, Helen Holt-Hart, Louise Kirk and Rose Ann Gore. She is survived by her two children, Stephen Caldwell, Jr. and wife, Gretchen of Joplin and Sheree Lynn Buhr and husband, Al of Neosho; two siblings, Ione Yost of Afton, Oklahoma and Bob Kirk of Webster, Texas; three grandchildren, Rachel Caldwell Mullins and husband, Chris, Stephanie Hessee and husband, Eric and Vince Schoonover and three great granddaughters.

Dee Davison

Harold “Dee” R. Davison Jr., 70, of Kansas City, MO, passed away May 15, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 6, 1945 in Spokane, Washington to Harold Sr and Alma (Young) Davison, who preceded him in death.

Dee was a long time resident of Kansas City, MO where he and his wife relocated from Joplin, MO. Dee was a dedicated salesman throughout his 40 year career. In his free time, you could always find Dee at a bowling alley where he bowled fourteen ring scores or playing golf where he strived for a hole in one. He also enjoyed volunteering as a Youth Bowling Coach as well as marshaling at Shoal Creek Golf Course. He may not have sung on pitch, but it was not hard on the ears; while if you asked him to whistle a tune, he hit it spot on. An avid Ebayer where he traded bowling and golf gear. But ultimately he enjoyed looking for “a good deal” for family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Sandi; son, Chris Davison and wife Mary; daughter, Casey Ward and husband Doug; grandchildren, Patrick, Alex, Emilee, Andrew and Braydon. As Dee went through life, he learned that it was not important to have a lot of friends, but real friends. Thank you for being a part of his life. Love, the Davison Family.

Billie Worthington

Billie Louis Worthington, age 83 of Joplin, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, following a sudden illness.

Billie was born September 17, 1931 to the late Ernest Jacob Worthington and Addie Maddie Jenny Blankenship Worthington in Harrison, Arkansas.

Billie was a machinist for many years working from Joplin to California and back. He attended church at Shepherd's Chapel in Gravette, Arkansas. Billie proudly served our country in the U.S. Army, winning numerous medals throughout his time of service in the Korean War.

On July 20, 1951, he married Betty Lamb after just a few dates together in Bentonville, Arkansas. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include sons, Wayne Worthington of Anza, California, Danny Worthington of San Dimas, California; daughters, Dixie Lujan of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Cheryle Ann Guthrie and husband, Mike of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; brother, E.W. "Chuck" Worthington and wife, Kitty of Springfield, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 4 great, great-grandchildren plus many extended family and friends.

Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Gerald Worthington, three brothers and two sisters.

Services for Billie will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri. Burial will take place following the service at 2:00 P.M. at the Fayetteville National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Marie Smith

Lena ‘Marie’ Smith, 97, Neosho, formerly of Unionville, Missouri, died May 21, 2015 in Joplin, Missouri, following a short illness. 

Marie was born June 18, 1917 in Martinstown, MO, the daughter of Robert F. and Ethna (Brown) Hodges and was raised in Martinstown before moving to Unionville, where she lived most of her life, until moving to Neosho in 2006. She was a self employed hairdresser and cosmetologist. She loved being with people and sharing a cup of coffee and cookies with her customers. She was an avid doll maker and enjoyed raising flowers. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Martinstown and attended Sweetwater Baptist Church while living in Neosho. 

Marie married Charley Daniel Smith on June 6, 1941 at Brookfield, Missouri and he preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1976. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Pinkerton and husband, LeRoy of Carrollton, GA and Charlene Casady and husband, Thomas D., II of Neosho, MO; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Robert Utter

R. Wade Utter, age 38, passed away of a long illness Wednesday May 20th, 2015.

He was born March 13, 1977 in Carthage. Wade was a lifelong resident of Carthage and worked as a recruiter for Freeman Hospital. He was also a photographer and contributor for the Carthage Press and co-author of the book “Images of Carthage”. Wade graduated from MSSU May 14, 2005 with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. He was a member of First Christian Church in Carterville. 

Wade was united in marriage to Gwen Faucett August 8, 1998, she survives. He is also survived by his parents JoAnn and Bob Evans of Carthage and Robert and Terri Utter of Springfield, MO, two sons, Evan Utter and Chastin Utter of Carthage, one brother Chris Evans, and one sister, Wendy Evans Bastings, grandparents Lene Swoveland of Joplin and Doris Evans of Carthage. 

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday May 27, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Visitations will be held Tuesday May 26, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at Ulmer Funeral Home. Ruth Bunton

Ruth Elaine Wood Bunton, 85, of Irwin, Missouri, died Friday, May 22, 2015.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Ruth was born near Irwin on December 26, 1929, to Carl and Clara (Davidson) Wood. She graduated from Lamar High School and Cottey College. As an elementary school teacher at Liberal, she met Donald Frank Bunton. They married on December 26, 1950, at Lamar First Christian Church and began farming near Irwin that year.

Ruth's greatest devotions were family, church, farm and community.

As a girl in the 1940s, she became a member of the Irwin 4-H Club. In 2008, she was inducted into the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame, and in 2011, she was recognized by Barton County 4-H for 50 years as a volunteer leader. For many years, she enjoyed serving as a Union Township election judge.

She was Don's partner in raising children and crops, expanding their family and farm over the years. In later years, she was her sons' advisor as they continued to farm in Irwin.

Ruth was baptized in 1939, and she was a lifelong member of Lamar First Christian Church. She served there in many roles, including some 25 years as teacher of the Sunny Corner class and leader of beginner church for toddlers. She also enjoyed many years in the Ambassadors class and the Keen-Agers group.

Above all, Ruth was devoted to her family, and took great joy in her children, their spouses, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her son Martin Bunton and wife Brenda; her son Michael Bunton and wife Cathy; her son Matthew Bunton and wife Laura (all of the Lamar area); her daughter Kristie Bunton of Saint Paul, Minnesota; her daughter Katharine Proctor and husband Matthew, of Joplin; her grandchildren Aaron and Mindy Bunton, Cara and Rod Hoevet, Wynne and Aaron Dogotch, Adam and Ruth Bunton, Molly Bunton, Emily and Chris Runion, Beth and Tyler Branstetter, Benjamin Bunton, Brian and Hailey Bunton, and Luke, Lydia, Clara, Carl, Conrad and Caroline Proctor; her great-grandchildren Drew Bunton, Gabriel and Isaiah Hoevet, and Elyanna, Elsa, Titus and Silas Dogotch; her brother Charles Wood of Sheldon; and her sister-in-law Virginia Bunton of Liberal.

A memorial service will be held at Lamar First Christian Church at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015, and the family will stay at the church afterward for fellowship and visiting until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Ozark Christian College.

Shirley Tracy

Shirley Jean Tracy, age 73, of Joplin, MO, peacefully passed on from this life in her home on May 20, 2015 at 1:20 a.m. surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with cancer. Shirley was born in Cardon, OK on January 7, 1942 to Mary and Clifford Reber. Shirley lived with her grandparents, Chris and Mildred Payne from the age of 3. She and Gene Tracy were united in marriage on November 5, 1977. Both say it was the wisest decision they ever made. They and their blended family lived in sweet harmony.

Shirley retired from Radiation Oncology & Associates working for Doctors Ditzel, Myers and Pacheco. Her years spent with them was one of her favorite subjects to discuss. Shirley was very involved and active with spending time with family and loved ones. In the winter months you could find her building fires and having wiener roast or sledding with her grandchildren, in the spring she would be planting flowers, and as soon as summer hit she would be out in the blackberry patch or swimming.

Shirley was preceded in death by both her grandparents, parents, and a brother, Walter Reber, and half brother, Chris Hoyt. Shirley is survived by her husband Gene, her daughters; Madora Baker, Tamara Breedlove and husband Nick, a granddaughter Casey VanStory and husband Eric and their two children Tavyn and Zane, and a grandson Ukiah Camp. Shirley is also survived by stepdaughter Tonna Thomas and husband Tom, stepson Terry Tracy and wife Lin, sister-in-law Colleen Reber Black, and grandchildren; Tracy Johnson and husband Chris and their six children, Lisa Thomas, Joe Thomas and wife Andrea and their two children, Rebecca Moore and husband Alex, Tabitha Bullette and her two children, Tyler Tracy, and Kyle Tracy making a total of twelve great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Gideons International in care of the mortuary.

Funeral services have been schedule for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Bob Martin and Keith Jackson, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Lowell Koile

Lowell Harry Koile, age 80, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Joplin Health and Rehab following an extended illness.

    Lowell was born February 15, 1935 to the late Keith Koile Sr. and Agnes Swanson Koile in Ashland, Wisconsin. He has lived in Joplin for nearly 50 years, moving from Pierce City, Missouri. Lowell was a farmer and loved to garden. He was part of a non-denominational home church.

    Surviving Lowell are a brother, Clayton Koile and wife, Becky of Joplin; sister, Darlene Adams of Zapata, Texas; sister in-law, Donna Koile of the state of Iowa plus many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

    Lowell is preceded in death by brothers, Keith Koile, Jr., Leon Koile, Clinton Koile and an infant brother; sisters, Madeline Starling and Alice May.

    Funeral services are planned for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26th at Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri, with Gaylen Van Loon and Greg Wilbert officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

Roy Campbell

Roy Burton Campbell age 97, of Joplin passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at his home. He was born on June 27, 1917 in Newtonia, Kansas to Leslie Burton Campbell and Hattie May (Biddlecomb) Campbell. Roy worked for Oronogo Mutual Mining as a shovel operator, and also worked for the Webb Corp as a welder where he retired in July of 1982. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, and was also a past Grand Master Mason at the Carterville Masonic Lodge. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, crafting bird houses, and he enjoyed raising his cattle.

 Roy married Mildred Passley on February 19, 1938 and she preceded him in death on December 3, 1985. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dennis Campbell on April 20, 2014; and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Dixie Feagans of Cassville, MO; son, Dale Campbell and wife MaryAnn of Oronogo; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Jean Campbell of Carthage; special friend, Dorothy Jean Shireman of Webb City; a special niece, Sandy Brown of Carterville; grandchildren, Kelli Pryor and husband Andrew Rosenstein, Robb Pryor, Tammy Fink and husband Joel, Chari Doty and husband Duane, Aaron Campbell, Randy Craig and wife Joni, Angie Shuster and husband Mike, Keesha Loveland and husband Mark, Kristie Forbes and spouse Johnna; 18 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City. Bob Charles Jordan, age 78, passed away May 21, 2015 at the Veterans Alzheimer’s Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo. He was born on October 8, 1936 in Miami, Ok. He is survived by his wife Darlene Jordan of Raymore, Mo his brothers: Bill Jordan of Belton, Mo, Paul Mosbaugh, Ron Mosbaugh and Don Mosbaugh all of Joplin, Mo; step children Danny Osborn and Glenna Hataway, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

 Bob Graduated from Joplin High School class of 1955, served four years in the United States Air Force. He retired from Winfield, Ks Branch of General Electric. Bob loved the Lord; he was blessed with many musical and entertaining talents and was a member of the Elk Lodge in Winfield, Ks.

Donna Cooper

Donna Cooper, 76, of Joplin Missouri, passed away on May 21st surrounded by her loving family.
Donna was born in Joplin Mo on August 23, 1938.

 Donna worked at a variety of professions, including Restaurant Management, Property Management and a myriad of other occupations. Her most important role was raising her 3 Sons, and assisting in raising 2 of her grandchildren, and being involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives. Donna was a great and loyal friend to many and was always there for anyone who needed her. She loved cooking for family and friends with anyone and everyone invited to gather and partake. She was happiest working in her yard with children at play nearby, and visiting on her porch, or having coffee at the kitchen table with her sisters and many lifelong friends. She was exceptionally proud of the 2 story tree house she built for her great grandchildren just a few years ago.

 Donna was known as a woman of great love and kindness having a great sense of humor and tremendous generosity.

 Donna is survived by her three sons Bill Cooper, Steve Cooper and Chris Thorn (Shenan). Her precious grandchildren Stephanie Cooper-Barnes, Matthew Cooper, Jacob Cooper, Benjamin Cooper, Hanah Schrader and Kya Thorn, and great grandchildren Isaiah, Gabby, Samsun, and Titus, three sisters, Nina Barnett, Gladys Lane and Lorayne Barnett, one brother, David Barnet, and numerous close nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

 Donna was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Jerry Barnett.

 Memorial services will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with her son, Steve, officiating.

Dan Turner

 Dan L. Turner, age 68, of Joplin, passed away on Thursday May 21, 2015, at his home following an illness.

 Dan was born on October 17, 1946 in Blackwell, Ok. the son of the late James and Sarah Turner. He has been a resident of Joplin for the past forty-two years. He married Joyce Whitlock on September 15, 1972. Together they raised four children. He was a member of Central Christian Center. He has worked at the Water Treatment Plant, as an auto and diesel mechanic, and as a truck driver. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and riding motorcycles.

 Dan is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Joyce Turner; three sons, Mike Turner and wife Joan, Ponca City, Ok., Dan L. Turner, Jr. and wife Crystal, Joplin, and Juston Turner, Joplin; one daughter, Lacanda Mikeska and husband Anthony, Joplin; three sisters, Joetta Wood and husband Larry, Joyce Matthews and husband David, and Judy Turner and Mark Stohr; nine grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Dawnya Niccole Turner; and three brothers, Ogletha Dewayne Turner, James Robert Turner, and George Edward Turner.

 Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Pastor Doug Wilkerson will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.

Helen Lowe

Helen L. Lowe, 93, of Sarcoxie, Mo departed this life on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Sarcoxie Nursing Center.

Helen entered this life on June 10, 1921 in rural Wentworth, Mo to the union of the late Charlie and Minnie (Spangler) Hatfield. She was united in marriage to Harry Lowe on March 10, 1941 and together they shared forty six years until his passing on October 31, 1987. She worked many years for Juvenile shoe factory. Helen was a lifelong resident of Sarcoxie. She enjoyed working, gardening, spending time with her family and friends and sewing, making many of her own clothes. She served several years on the Sarcoxie City Council and was a member of the Sarcoxie New Beginning Church of the Nazarene. Helen will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Helen is survived by two sons; Jim Lowe and wife Mary of Neosho, Mo and Randy Lowe and wife Dana of Seneca, Mo., six grandchildren; Kevin Lowe, Rusty Lowe, Chad Lowe, Christie Evans, Stacie Jones and Jeramy Lowe, elven great grandchildren, one sister; Nell Aleshire of Sarcoxie, Mo as well as a host of other family and friends.

Margaret Lois Patton passed away May 16, 2015 at Granby House. 

She was born January 26, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of James Lowell and Lulah Augusta Prather. Margaret married Wendell Patton and he preceded her in death on March 23, 1999. Margaret was a homemaker in Neosho before relocating to Kansas City. The family resided in Kansas City, North, where she was close to her family. Following retirement, Margaret and Wendell moved back to Neosho. She devoted much of her time volunteering her services to St. Canera’s Catholic Church, where she was a member, Crosslines and Freeman-Neosho Hospital. Margaret had many friends and enjoyed playing cards with them and family. 

Margaret is survived by her four daughters, Joyce Montez and husband, Ben, Sharon Cochren and husband, Mike, Donna Brown and husband, Bill, and Debbie Vogt and husband, Rick; eleven grandchildren, B.J. Montez, Audrey Russell, Theresa Hamby, Gina Riddle, Bryan Whipple, Stephen Whipple, Christi Kalmbach, Angela Vogel, Jay Brown, Sarah Vogt and Emily Vogt; nineteen great grandchildren; her youngest brother, Charles Prather and many nieces and nephews. Marian Russell

Marian L. Russell age 91 of Evansville, IN formerly of Joplin passed away Monday May 18, 2015 at the Heart Hospital Deaconess Gateway in Evansville, IN. She was born on March 6, 1924 in Joplin, Mo the daughter of Norval and Florence “Brackett” Hopwood. Marian worked as a medical transcriptionist for St John’s Hospital until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church. 

Marian was preceded in death by her parents, a brother John Hopwood and three sisters: Frances Russell, Charlotte Hopwood and Florence Allen. Survivors include her daughter Linda Boostorm and husband Robert of Evansville, IN, a brother Samuel Hopwood of Oak Ridge, TN and wife M.J., a sister Carol Gallagher and husband Joe of Lewisville, TN, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was born January 15, 1934 in Barton County, Missouri to Elvage and Effie (Glenn) Duncan. Wilma worked as a waitress for several area restaurants. and was a member of the Grand Avenue Church of God, Carthage, MO.. 

Wilma was united in marriage to Marion Bruffett Jr. on September 24, 1954. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2010. Survivors include one son, Mark Bruffett. of Jasper, MO.. One daughter, Jane Adams (Jeff) of Neosho, MO.. Three brothers, Tom Duncan of Lamar, MO., John Duncan of Valley Center, Kansas and Linley Duncan of Springdale, Arkansas One sister, Effie Mae Heiskell of Golden City, MO.. Three grandchildren, and Five great-grandchildren. 

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 22, 2015 at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper, MO.. Cecelia Bayne

Cecilia Norine Bayne, age 82 of Joplin, Mo., passed away early Thursday, May 14, 2015, at her home following a short illness.

Cecilia was born on November 30, 1932, in Flint, Mi., the daughter of Elsie Floyd and Mary Elda (Wildman) Brown. She has been an area resident for many years, moving here from Baldwin Park, Ca., and she worked as a sales associate at Wal-Mart. Cecilia was a member of the North Main Street Baptist Church.

She married, J.E. Stepp on December 24, 1949. He preceded her in death in 1955. She then married Robert Bayne on October 18, 1956. Robert preceded her in death in 2000. Cecilia is survived by four daughters: Karen Warren of Justin, Tx., Cheryl Garrison of Chesapeake, Va., Laurie Bayne and Jodi Morris, both of Joplin; three sons: Roy Stepp of Joplin, Ed Stepp of Strasburg, Co., David Stepp of Bristol, N.H.; six sisters: Mildred Box, Jeanette Perkins, Lois Smethers, all of Grants Pass, Or., June Colona of Sun City, Ca., Patricia Kelley of Joplin and Veda Annunziato of Paso Robles, Ca.; fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two brothers: Dale and Richard Brown, and two sisters: Evelyn Knorr and Marjorie Sykes.
Cecilia is to be cremated with the family holding a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at College View Baptist Church with J.R. Slater and Ed Stepp officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Michael “Mike” Campbell age 44 of Joplin, Mo passed away Saturday May 16, 2015. He was born on November 14 1970 in Joplin the son of Jerry and Charlene “Smith” Campbell. He worked as a handyman in the area. He enjoyed going to church, fishing, the outdoors and especially loved his daughter. 

He is survived by a daughter Ashton Campbell-Stringert of Joplin Mo, his parents of Joplin, three brothers: Shawn Lucas of Joplin, Robert Lucas, of Joplin and Brad Campbell of Webb City, Mo.

Sue Westfall

Kathaleen Sue Westfall, age 60, of Neosho, Mo. passed away at 11:47 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2015 at her home following a lengthy illness. Sue was born August 7, 1954 in Joplin, Mo. and had lived in Neosho the last 30 years. She was a graduate of Webb City High School in 1972, and attended MSSU. She served with the Nursing Staff at Joplin Regional Rehabilitation Center for 7 years, and later was employed with CFI. Sue was a member of the Hornet Christian Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, Flea Markets, and collecting stained glass.

Sue married Michael Westfall November 19, 1976 in Joplin and he survives. Additional survivors include a son, Joshua Westfall and wife Kacee, Joplin, one daughter, Angela Westfall, Pea Ridge, Ar., her Mother, Norma Duncan, Joplin, one sister, Sharron Lassiter and husband Charles, Joplin, and two grandchildren, Celese Nadine Hacker, and Dylan Miles Westfall.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Butch Ward, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.

Ricky Frizzell

Richard Dale ‘Ricky’ Frizzell, 64, Neosho, died May 17, 2015 at Freeman Neosho ER. 

Richard was born Aug. 29, 1950 in San Diego, California and graduated from El Cajon High School. He moved to Oklahoma in 1970 to be with grandparents and attended ECU School in Ada, Oklahoma. He then moved to Mt. Home, Arkansas and worked with the Mountain Home Church of Christ. He moved to Harrison and Batesville, AR; Miami, Oklahoma to establish new congregations . He later moved to Neosho in 2002. He was a bus driver for the Neosho R5 School District and a member of the Highway 60 Church of Christ. 

Richard Frizzell and Teresa Osborn met in Oklahoma and married on January 1, 1975 in Mountain Home, Arkansas and she survives. Also surviving are four children, Steven Frizzell and wife, Alexis of Bella Vista, AR; Stephanie Lay and husband, Landon of Springdale, AR; Jennifer Freeman and husband, Chris of Basehor, KS and James Frizzell and wife, Christy of Raymore, MO; his mother, Violet ‘Vi’ Frizzell; two sisters, Caroline Poirier and husband Kent and Rosalie Copeland, both of Fresno, CA and seven grandchildren, Ava, Jack, Emily, Ellie, Alex, Josie and Aurora. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Lee Frizzell and grandsons, Josiah and Caleb Freeman.

Lee Foster

William “Lee” Foster, born 19 August 1932 in Newton County, Missouri, went home to be with his Lord on 17 May 2015, after an extended illness. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Ethyl Fennimore Foster, and a sister, Betty Ann Foster. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Dixon Foster (married 23 May 1952); a son, Michael Foster and wife, Mary Vandiver Foster; a daughter, Denise Foster Bicknell and husband, Tim Bicknell; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one brother, Bobby R. Foster; one sister, Doris McLaughlin and husband, Harry; numerous cousins and many friends. 

Lee attended West Benton School for 8 years, Neosho High School for 4 years and Joplin Jr. College. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a B.S. in Accounting. Lee attended Wichita State where he worked on his Master’s in Business and he served our country in the Naval Reserves for eight years. Lee was employed by Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas in the accounting department. He was asked to attend the first computer class and was transferred to data processing where he became a supervisor in data processing in the finance department. Lee and his brother purchased their father’s business, Foster Produce in 1971. They, along with Jack Bishop, built the new market on South Rangeline in Joplin, Missouri in 1976. Lee attended First Christian Church in Derby, Kansas and served in various capacities including Board of Directors, Treasurer and Sunday School teacher. He also attended College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, Missouri and Oakwood Christian Church in Neosho, Missouri. Lee loved traveling, fishing, crossword puzzles, spending time with family, map reading, rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Antonio Spurs, and researching his genealogy. He was an avid member of the Gideons International and served in various capacities. 

Taking Matthew 28:18-20 to heart – “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Lee was dearly beloved by his family and will be greatly missed.

Bill Ogle

William Edward Ogle, age 89, of Sarcoxie, Missouri departed from this life on May 14, 2015. 

Bill as he was known entered this life on July 21, 1925. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy in Pearl Harbor during WWII. Bill was a retired truck driver. 

Bill was united in marriage to Lois Fite. She survives. Other survivors include, six sons, Michael Ogle (Holly), Mitch Ogle (Vickie), Matt Ogle (Tina), Mark Ogle, Morris Ogle, and Max Ogle (Christy). Three daughters, Anna Ogle Newman (Michael), Debbie Parker, and Diana Ogle. Twenty three grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Gloria and Marie, two brothers, Harold and Bob. 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2015 at Avilla Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 till 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Weng Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Avilla Cemetery.

Bill Denton

Billy Gene (Bill) Denton, age 73 of Carl Junction; formerly of Joplin, passed away at Missouri Veterans Home in Mount Vernon at 4:13 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2015 after a lengthy illness.

Born March 3, 1942 in Baxter Springs, KS, he was the son of the late Wheeler Leroy (Dick) Denton and the former Anna Marie Carmack and lived in the Joplin area his lifetime. A 1960 graduate of Joplin Senior High School, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. Bill worked 31 years for Fleming Foods and then worked for Americold Logistics at the Carthage Underground until retirement. He was a member of College View Baptist Church. Bill loved his girls and was always focused on his family. He was an extremely hard working man, who also enjoyed fishing, gardening and working in his yard.

On September 10, 1966 he married Carol J. Galbraith in Joplin. She survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Tricia Abel and husband Eric of Piedmont, OK, Pam Courtney and husband Curt of Arma, KS; his brother, Bob Denton of Joplin; four grandchildren, Taylor and Ben Abel, Cole and Drake Courtney; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, George Reno.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Parker Chapel with Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with Duke Denton, Eric and Ben Abel, Curt, Cole and Drake Courtney, Lance and Barry Galbraith serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends preceding the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans' Home in Mount Vernon, in care of the mortuary.

Norman LaFountain

Norman LaFountain, age 55, of Lamar, passed away May 4, 2015 at his home.

Norman was born in Boston, Massachusetts where he spent his childhood and graduated from high school. He had lived in Lamar for the past eight years and had worked as a fork lift operator at Thorco Industries. After retiring due to declining health, Norman had more time to spend with friends and hobbies he enjoyed. He had a natural “green thumb” and would introduce himself to neighbors by giving them one of his many houseplants. Animals were drawn to Norman and he was a wonderful dog-sitter for travelling friends. Music was a major interest to Norman, and evenings devoted to karaoke with friends like Jessie Taylor were a favorite pastime. He also appreciated the opportunity to board the bus and spend a day at Downstream. Many will remember Norman as a practical joker with a boisterous, infectious laugh that made everyone feel just a little better because they had spent time with him.

A graveside funeral service was held Friday, May 15th at Lake Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Quigley officiating.

Mitch Miles

Mitchell “Mitch” Eugene Miles, age 69, of Lamar, Missouri, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.

Mitch was born March 14, 1946 at Arcadia, Kansas to Eugene Miles and Shirley Dean (Kirksey). He graduated Arcadia High School in 1965 and went on to receive bachelor degree in music from Pittsburg State University. On February 10, 2005 he married Anne Shirley (Estes) at Pittsburg, Kansas. She survives of the home. Mitch had worked as a music teacher in the Jasper School System, had worked as a cosmetologist and was the Pastor of Full Faith Church in Carthage for 20 years. He enjoyed singing in the Lamar United Methodist Church Choir where he attended. Mitch also was an avid hunter and fisherman and was known for his ability to grow “The Best Tomatoes”.

In addition to his wife Anne, he is survived by two daughters, Kristi Carter of Lamar and Karla (Darrin) Alumbaugh of Carthage; two sisters, Anita (Charles) Callahan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Marilyn (Steve) Snider of Pittsburg, Kansas; five grandchildren, Kirsten Miles, Brylee O’Banion, Kaden Carter, Ashleigh Alumbaugh and Cheyenne Alumbaugh. Mitch was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was held 1 pm, Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Lamar United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Turnbough officiating.

Darlene Gardner

Darlene Joan Gardner, age 92, of Lamar, MO, died Monday, May 11, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin. Darlene was born April 22, 1923 at Milford, Missouri to Luther Alexander Runion and Leonora Fannie (Onwiler) Runion. She attended school at Milford. On March 23, 1981 she married Bill Gardner and he preceded her in death March 11, 2011.

Darlene had worked for Barton County Memorial Hospital as a nursing assistant. She was a member of Eastern Star and the VFW Lady’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, Howard (Myra) Dockery of Richardson, TX; three daughters, Darla (Dean) Grant of Lamar, MO, Brenda (Harold) Sprenkle of Jasper, MO, and Opal Dockery of Milford, MO; grandchildren, Jack Truman of Milford, MO, Melisa Irlandi of Port Charlotte, FL, Kathy (Hans) Vos of Rotterdam, Netherlands, Shannon (Grant) Hill of Edmond, OK, Skipper (Tomesha) Montgomery of Cullman, AL, Kevin (Leslie) Dockery, of Wylie, TX, Mary Dockery of Nashville, TN, Lori (Scott) Dockery, of Iowa City, IA and Mandy (Eddie) Browning of Lamar, MO; twelve great-grandchildren and one brother, Earl (Betty) Runion of Bethany, OK.

In addition to her husband, Darlene was preceded in death by three brothers, Luther Runion Jr., Paul Runion, and Gerald “Bud” Runion; and two sisters, Virginia Medlin and Margaret Costley.

Lou Scroggs

Lou A. Scroggs, age 89, of Lamar, passed away Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2015 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.

     Lou was born August 5, 1925, near Piedmont, Oklahoma, to L.A. and Ona (Stephens) Hampton.  She graduated from Piedmont High School in 1943 and moved to California during World War II.  In 1949, Lou married Bub Rix and they made their home in Barton County.  In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, Lou worked for many years as a dental assistant for Dr. Ralph Dimond.  Many will also remember her as their Merle Norman consultant.  After Bub’s death in 1980, Lou became very active in Republican politics, first with a run for mayor of Lamar.  Over the years, she was influential in many local, state and national candidate campaigns and was appointed to the Council for Aging by Governor Ashcroft.  Lou was instrumental in the re-activation of Barton County Republican Women’s Club, serving as president many years.  She was also president of 4^thDistrict Missouri Federation of Republican Women’s Club and was named Missouri Republican of the Year in 1996.

     On August 17, 1996, in Lamar, Lou married Dick Scroggs.  In their nearly 19 years together, they shared love, respect, and a desire to improve and enrich their community, state and country through political involvement.

     In addition to her husband, Bub, Lou was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Rusty Hampton; two sisters, Wanda Johnston and Iva Jean Laepple; her daughter, Marcia Witham; and a granddaughter, Samantha Gartman.

     Survivors include her husband, Dick, of the home; son-in-law, Bill Witham, Lamar; a sister, Roberta Hampton, Lamar; a brother-in-law, Don (Sharon) Scroggs, Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Randy (Katie) Day, Russ Day, Melissa (Bob) Oertle, all of Lamar; five great-grandchildren, Amanda (Nathan) Stewart, Megan (Aaron) Heiskell, Lynsi Oertle, Cedric, and Alexis Gartman; and a great-great-granddaughter, Charlotte “Charlie” Stewart.

     A memorial service was held at Friday, May 15^th at First Baptist Church of Lamar, followed by a visitation/reception in the church fellowship hall.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date.

Don Miller

Don was born August 17, 1935 at Lamar to Roy and Marry (Hooper) Miller and was a life-long Barton County resident.  Empowered by common sense, a strong work ethic and a “can-do” attitude, he met and conquered challenges in his working career and personal life as a leader.  As a general contractor, Don could build a quality barn, garage, or family home from the ground up.  He was a trucker, instrumental in moving O’Sullivan Industries from Sullivan, Missouri to Lamar as well as working for them as a plant foreman.  He was involved in the creation of Stockton Lake and worked tirelessly to provide rural water to Barton County.  Don was a natural auto mechanic whose shop was always open to family and friends.  In addition to outside employment, he also farmed and raised livestock.  Don especially enjoyed horses and had served as president of the Lamar Saddle Club, announced rodeos, and was point rider for the Bicentennial Wagon Train.  While raising his family, he had been a T-ball and baseball coach and took up golf in order to spend time with his boys.  He was a member of Milford Christian Church and enjoyed the fellowship of his morning coffee group.

      On February 4, 1956, at Carthage, Don married his forever dance partner and love of his life, Jane Miller, and she survives of the home.  Also surviving are their four children, Pam (Joe) Judd, Peg (Bill) Jeffries, Chip (Jerri) Miller, and Brian (Cassie) Miller, all of Lamar; a brother, Gerry (Brenda) Miller, Lamar; two sisters, Dorothy (Dwight) Parks, Lamar, and Vicki Miller, Sarcoxie; an aunt, Zelma Hooper, Lamar; nine grandchildren, Crissy Knox, Jared Jeffries, Justin Jeffries, Jenny Reaves, Tara McConnaughey, Karli Buzzard, Kaleb Miller, Chase Miller, and Cabree Miller; 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

      Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 16^th at Daniel Funeral Home with Cliff Hazard and Pastor Robb Hodson officiating.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Opal Kidd

Opal C. Kidd, 84, Carthage, MO, passed away Wednesday May 13, 2015 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage, MO. Opal C. Counts was born October 20, 1930 in Washington County, VA to Claude Edgar Counts and Martha Elizabeth (Francisco) Counts. She graduated high school in Meadowview, VA. She married Ermond Elmer Kidd on November 24, 1952; he preceded her in death on June 5, 2001. Opal worked as the store manager of Davidson’s Shoes on the Carthage Square. She was Methodist by faith. She was an amazing mother, loved rummage sales, refinishing furniture, shopping, part Southern Bell, part Annie Oakley, a quick wit and age had ripened her sweetness. She was a classy dresser, a green thumb, a bird lover, and had that certain positive outlook that “every day is a good day”. She will live on in our hearts forever.

Survivors include two daughters; Kristina A. Hodkin (Jeff), Carthage, MO, and Terry L. Dillon, Kansas City, MO; two sons; Larry E. Kidd (Cristina), Houston, TX, and Vincent T. Kidd (Jana), Neosho, MO; one sister; Zana Davis, Goodletsville, TN; one brother; Claude Edgar Counts Jr., Meadowview, VA; nine grandchildren; Kasie Kidd, Mary Jo Marconi, Paul Kidd, Ethan Dillon, Sean Dillon, Ashley Osborne, Alicia Osborne, Jaclyn Kidd, and Natalie Kidd; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; Dessaline Surber; a son-in-law; J.R. Dillon, and a still born baby son.

Graveside services will be held at 4:30 PM on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Dudman Springs Cemetery. Rev. Ron Franklin will officiate. Billie Mariott

Billie J. Mariott age 71, Joplin, Missouri passed away Wednesday May 13, 2015 following an illness.

She was born June 19, 1943 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Billie worked at St John’s Hospital for 30 years, retiring in 2007 and was a member of Grace Apostolic Church for 35 years.

She is survived by two daughters; Glenna Mitchell and husband Jim, Joplin, Missouri, Tammy Adamson, Joplin, Missouri, four grandchildren; Amie Mays, Andrew Mays, Cassidy Adamson, Bon Adamson, one great grandchild; Aiden Bradshaw, two brothers; Jamie Collier, Jack Lane, two sisters: Margie McMillan, Charlotte DeBolt, and her cherished pet, Maggie.

She was preceded in death by Thomas (Tommy) Mariott in 1993 who was her partner in crime for 35 years.

Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are; Bon Adamson, Dylan Smith, Andrew Mays, Jimmy Mitchell, Cassidy Adamson, and Amie Mays.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Monday May 18, 2015 at the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary chapel with Brother Gary Garrett officiating. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Marjorie Barrow

Marjorie Inave Barrow, age 83 of rural Joplin, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Galena Nursing Center following an extended illness.

Marjorie was born on October 17, 1931 to the late Eldon Webster and Nanny "Addie" McCullah in Seneca, Missouri. She has resided in the Joplin area most of her life.

Marjorie loved people and loved dressing up for occasions. She worked as a retail clerk for several companies in and out of Joplin such as Shady Lady and J.C. Penney. She also worked for her son doing accounting work. Marjorie was a member of First Baptist Church in Carl Junction, Missouri for many years.

She married Thomas Wright Barrow on March 31, 1967 in Miami, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on May 23, 2002.

Marjorie is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Hittle and husband Roger of Asbury; sons, Randal Lee Grant and wife Amy of Marshall, Texas, Roger Harold Grant and wife Letha of Bixby, Oklahoma, Eldon Duane Winkelman and wife Kelly of Oronogo; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; many extended family, friends and her faithful dog companion, Trouble, that will miss her greatly.

Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings.

Graveside services for Marjorie are planned for Saturday, May 16th at 11:00 A.M. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

Larry Black

Larry David Black, age 66 of Joplin, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the Webb City Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Larry was born July 5, 1948 to the late Lee Black and Mildred Margaret Wells Black in Joplin. He graduated from Joplin High School with class of 1967. He later attended classes at Missouri Southern State College. Larry served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Later, Larry worked for Allgeier Martin as a surveyor for many years. Larry also was a reserve officer for the Newton County Sherriff's Department. He was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Joplin.

He is survived by a special friend of many years, Peggy Watkins of Joplin; sons, Michael Black and wife Tammy of Belle Vista, Arkansas, Daniel Walker of Willard, Missouri; brother, Steve Black and wife Chris of Carl Junction; sisters, Donna Wilson and husband Alvin of Joplin, Kathy Soza and husband Larry of California; 2 grandkids and many extended family and friends.

There will be no formal services at this time.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.

Nancy Pennington

Nancy A. Pennington, 72, of Carthage, MO left to be with the Lord at 9 p.m. Saturday May 9, 2015 at Freeman Hospital. 

Nancy was born October 20, 1942 in Carthage, she was the daughter of Almous Spruce and Geda Watson, She attended school in Carthage and married Sherman Pennington October 11, 1958 he preceded her in death January 4, 2011. She was a former member of the CB club “The Odd Ball Bunch”, Nancy retired from St. Luke's Nursing Home and was a charter member of the Fellowship Baptists Church, she enjoyed cooking crocheting and her grandchildren. 

Survivors include three daughters; Tracy Silvers and her husband Jerry of Webb City, Terrie Rutledge and Kelly Borchgardt and her husband Richard all of Carthage; nine grand children Stephanie Stanley and her husband Ian of Carterville, Jeffery Silvers and Jenny Hubert of Anderson Darren Silvers and his wife Sarah of Joplin, Tausha Hayes of Jasper, Toni Watson of Carthage, Brittany Smith and her husband David of Carthage, Garrell Dry and his wife Kali of Joplin, Dakota Borchgardt of Carthage and Ashley Borchgardt of Lancaster; sixteen great grandchildren, Ethan and Hunter Shoup, Hayden Stanley, Faith Silvers, Kinzie Hubert, Jordan, Rylan, Kaylyn, Brooklyn and Justin Hays Haylie, Jaden and Cody Watson, Jericho and Jasper Smith Alzeala Crist and three great great grandchildren Riley, Zane and Kaley Watson. Surviving siblings include one brother Dale Spruce and one sister Barbra Spruce both of Carthage. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and husband one sister Neoma Colbaugh and one brother Donnie Spruce. In loving memory of a wonderful wife, mother, mimi, daughter, and sister. Mother you will always be loved and remembered, we could not have asked for a better mother. Until we meet again in heaven, we will love and miss you so much. 

Nancy's wishes were for cremation and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday May 17, 2015 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Carthage, the reverend Charles Chrisman will officiate. Bobby Gooch

Bobby Dale Gooch, 68, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, May 10, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bobby was born March 22, 1947 to Robert Gooch and Wathenia Constanz and again in 2012, as a believer of Jesus Christ.

Bobby graduated from Joplin Senior High School in 1966. He spent much of his youth at The Joplin Boys Club, where he excelled in boxing. Bobby won multiple Golden Gloves Championships in the fourstate area. He could often be found drinking coffee at McDonald’s early in the mornings before making his way to the fishing hole, hunting field or golf course. Bobby was a member of The Joplin Golf Club and spoke fondly of his time playing with the “noonies.”

Bobby spent his life in the service of others, beginning with service in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War, serving as a MP. He was a member of the Joplin Police Department, where he served as a patrol officer and paramedic. Bobby transferred to the Joplin Fire Department, where he continued to serve his community for 21 years, before retiring as a Driver/Engineer. He served as Vice President of the local chapter of the International Association of Firefighters and secretary of the Southwest Coalition of Firefighters for 8 years of his career.

Bobby is survived by his mother, Wathenia Constanz, and mother-in law, Virginia Baggerly, both of Joplin. His wife, Marlene Baggerly Gooch, a daughter, Krissy Gooch, his sons, Aaron Gooch and wife Julie, all of Joplin, and Brian Simonds, of Hasty, Colorado. Five grandchildren, Luke Loveall, Kaitlyn and Abigail Gooch, Breanna and Trysten Simonds. He is also survived by two sisters, Linda Ackerson and husband, Ron and Joyce Smith and husband, Mark. Bobby considered Ron Ackerson, David Grinder and Louie Gannon to be “brothers.”

Bobby was preceded in death by his father, Robert Gooch, and two sisters, his twin Brenda Anastopolis and Anita King.

A graveside service will be held at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery on Thursday, May 14th at 10:00 am. Members of the Joplin Fire and Police Department’s Honor Guards will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like everyone to send a happy thought Bobby’s way next time you drink a cup of coffee, cast a line, or tee off.

Olen Robbins

Olen L. Robbins, age 76, passed away on Sunday May 10, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, following an illness.

Olen was born on April 12, 1939 in Rolla, Mo., the son of the late James L. and Letha (Firestine) Robbins. He served in the United States Army. He worked as a machinist for Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. He married Betty Benedict- Fox on June 28, 1987 in Topeka, Ks. They moved to Joplin in 2005. He was a member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church. Olen loved classic cars and restored many cars. He was a member of many Classic Car Clubs.

Olen is survived by his wife Betty Robbins, Joplin, three sons, Olen Randy Robbins and wife Tracy, Oronogo, Mo., James Robbins and wife Donna, Middleburg, Fl., and Don Fox and wife Stacey, Lebanon, Mo.; two daughters, Connie Luellen Robbins, Denison, Ks., and Pamela Wagler and husband Steve, Evansville, In., two brothers, Carl Robbins and wife Dolly, Joplin, and Elvin Robbins and wife Eileen, Joplin; one sister, Wanda Myers and husband Galen, Joplin; fourteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1:00 Wednesday at Harmony Heights Baptist Church. Reverend Charlie Burnett will officiate. A second service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Topeka, Ks. Reverend Peter Whitebird will officiate. The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. Thursday prior to the service. Burial will be at Topeka Cemetery in Topeka, Ks.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation in care of the mortuary.

Lisa Lowrance

Lisa Gail Lowrance, age 57, Joplin, passed away on Friday May 8, 2015, at KU Medical Center, following a sudden illness. 

Lisa was born on April 17, 1958 in Canton, Ms., the daughter of the late Luther and Jimmie Ruth (Poole) Graves. She graduated from Mississippi State University in 1980 with a B.S. in Education. She married Rob Lowrance on August 2, 1980. Together they raised two children. She was a special education teacher for the Joplin R-8 School District at Soaring Heights Elementary School. She enjoyed making cupcakes and spending time with her two grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter Brooke White, Joplin; one son, Josh Lowrance and fiancé Tarah Reynolds, Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Landon and Riley White; and her mother and father –in-law, Bob and Patt Lowrance, Jackson, Ms. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Buddy Graves.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Reverend Reid Vance will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to KU Medical Center Transplant Division in care of the mortuary.

Kevin Matthews

Kevin Franklin Matthews Sr., 49, Joplin, MO, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO after a sudden illness. Kevin Franklin Matthews was born on December 4, 1965 in Cape May Court House, NJ to Wayne Matthews and Sandra (Pritchard) Matthews. He was a graduate of the Middle Township High School, Cape May Court House, NJ, Class of 1981. Kevin married Patricia Ann Nichols on January 22, 2005 in Rio Grande, NJ, she survives. He worked as an auto parts salesman at Four State Trucks, Joplin, MO.

Additional survivors include one daughter; Gladys Jessie, Brook, IN; three sons; Timmy Jessie Jr., Lafayette, IN, Curtis Dodd, Farmington, NM, and Kevin F. Matthews Jr., Joplin, MO; one brother; Wayne Matthews, Dennisville, NJ; and three grandchildren.
