Dennis Hopkins

Dennis Earl Hopkins, age 62, Neosho, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014 at National Health Care Center after an illness.

Dennis was born July 24, 1951 in Neosho to Howard Hopkins and Erna Weber Hopkins. Dennis had lived in the area all of his life.

He received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Missouri Southern State College and worked as a substitute teacher for the Joplin and Neosho school districts for 8 years. He was a successful salesman in the auto and mobile home industry and managed many pieces of real estate property. He truly was a jack of all trades.

Dennis raised and trained doves to release at special occasions. He enjoyed spending time in his shop, tinkering with ideas or working on home improvement projects. His favorite time was spent with his children and all of his grandchildren.

Dennis is survived by his life partner and companion, Pamela Vorhees, Neosho; children, Michele M. Vorhees, Carl Junction, Johnny B. Vorhees and his wife, Erin, Joplin, Scotty J. Vorhees, Joplin; one brother, David Hopkins and his wife, Kelli, Columbia, Missouri; two sisters, Cynthia Hopkins, Racine, Wisconsin, Sandra Craig and her husband, Scott, Kansas City, Missouri; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A celebration of Dennis’ Life is planned for Monday at 6:00 p.m. at Joplin Family Worship Center. Pastor Dan Wermuth will officiate. Friends will have the opportunity to share memories of Dennis during the celebration. The family will receive friends afterward. The family will scatter Dennis’ ashes in a private setting at a later date.

The family has invited all of his friends attending to wear their favorite flip flops in his honor.

Bob Balcom

William Robert ‘Bob’ Balcom, Sr., age 74, Webb City, passed away at 8:50 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 at his home after an illness.

Bob was born August 23, 1939 in Hesperia, Michigan to the late Earl Balcom and Ruth Gurney Balcom and had lived in the Joplin area the past 24 years, moving from Michigan.

He worked for the Hesperia, Michigan school district for many years. After moving to the Joplin area, he worked for Main Street Joplin for ten years and had also worked as a security guard for Gary Hall for several years.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving as a gunner’s mate from 1956 until 1962. Bob was a baseball fan and followed the Detroit Tigers even after moving to Missouri. He played fast pitch softball for many years when he was younger.

He married Sue Studebaker on July 28, 1973 in Hesperia, Michigan. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include three children, Bobbi Barnett and her husband, Justin, Joplin, William Robert Balcom, Jr., Joplin, Chad Balcom, Republic; siblings, Vera, Laura, Alice, Art, Oradon; grandchildren, Austin, Cailyn, Josiah, Courtney, Hailey, Tuff, Cameron, Wyatt; and close family friends, Patty, Becca, Tracy, Dr. Scott McClintock and Tamara Colson.

A memorial visitation is planned for Monday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the United Way, both in care of Parker Mortuary.

J. R. Polen

Juan Roberto "J.R." Polen, age 24, a loving son, father, brother and uncle, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo following a sudden accident.

J.R. was born October 29, 1989 to Robert L. Polen and Magda Lupi Rodriguez in Joplin, Mo. He has lived in the Joplin area all his life. J.R. served his country in the United States Army National Guard for two years.

He is survived by his mother, Lupi Rodriguez and fiance', Mickey Lilly of the home; son, Mick Rhys Polen-Wilder of Neosho; sisters, Marli Polen and Katy Polen both of Joplin; maternal grandparents, Manuel and Madaleyme Rodriguez of Miami, OK; 2 nieces; 1 nephew and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that will greatly miss him.

J.R. is preceded in death by his father, Robert and his paternal grandparents, Bill and Bonnie Polen.

Services are planned for Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 6:00 PM in the Parker Chapel. Visitation will follow the service. A burial of ashes will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to help cover funeral expenses.

Shirley Van Hooser

Shirley Ann Van Hooser, age 77, of Harrison, Arkansas, passed away at 12:45 a.m. May 30, 2014 at Hospice of the Hills Hospice House, Harrison, AR.

Shirley was born January 24, 1937 in Joplin, MO to the late Leo R. Schrader and Helen Woodford Schrader.

She worked as an administrative assistant for Autotronics in Joplin, MO for several years. She loved the outdoors and was a member of the Grand Lake Sailing Club and the Sailboat Racing Program. Shirley was an avid golfer and will be missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Blaine Van Hooser. They married October 4, 1978 in Miami, Ok.

Additional survivors include three daughters, Traci Phillips and her husband, Scott, Joplin, MO, Marla Phillips and her husband, O.J., Harrison, AR, Cheryl Estes and her husband, Johnny, Harrison, AR; two stepsons, Buck Van Hooser and his wife, Kathy, Springfield, MO, Craig Van Hooser, Springfield, MO; one sister, Arlene Patterson and husband, Richard, Joplin, MO; eight grandchildren, Reagan Armer, Johnathan Phillips, Misty Hawley, Cody Estes, Cory Estes, Dr. Ashley Merrick, Antoinette Martin, Carson Van Hooser; nine great grandchildren and one on the way.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a brother, Leo W. Schrader and an infant son, Gregory Riggs.

Memorial services are planned for Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel in Joplin, MO. Rev. Bob Simon will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services at the mortuary. Julianna Ewing

Julianna Phoebe Ewing, 19, Stella, died May 29, 2014 from injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident east of Neosho. Julianna was born Nov. 8, 1994 in Topeka, KS. She graduated from East Newton High School and just completed her first semester at Crowder College and attended Gospel Lighthouse Church in Neosho.
Julianna is survived by her mother, Elsie Ewing, Neosho; her father, Floyd Ewing, Pineville; two brothers, Matthew Ewing and wife, Valerie, Neosho and Kevin Ewing, Chanute, KS; her paternal grandmother, Patricia Kay Womelsdorf, Pineville and numerous aunts, uncles and friends.

Jimmie Eastin

Jimmie Bobs Eastin, 84, Neosho, died May 28, 2014 at Medicalodge, following an extended illness. Jimmie was born Dec. 24, 1929 in Keighley, Kansas.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and worked as a drafting engineer. He was a former member of the Neosho First Baptist Church. Jimmie married Virginia Maxine Hopkins on Oct. 31, 1953 in Springfield, MO and she survives. Also surviving are four sons, Jimmie Bo Eastin, Owensboro, KY;
James Eastin, Jefferson Eastin, and Joel Eastin, all of Neosho; 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Daisy (Hammer) Eastin and a sister, Audrey Ruth Eastin.

Dottie Cable

Dorothy M. (Dottie) Cable, age 87 of Joplin, MO, passed away at her home.

Born April 25, 1927 in Ottawa, IL, she was the daughter of the late Virgil R. Swanson and Burnice Mustered Swanson and had lived in Joplin since 1951, moving from Chicago, IL. A registered nurse, she received her training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.

She was a member of the American Optometric Auxiliary and served as past president for the Missouri Optometric Auxiliary and Lions Club Auxiliary. She was a Deaconess and Board member of First Christian Church. She and her husband conducted 23 missions to Central and South America to provide free eye care to the poor with Voluntary Optometric Services for Humanity (VOSH). She was co-chairman of Crossline Churches of Joplin (1985-1986). A 12-year Board member of the Red Cross, she served as Instructor Trainer in Home Nursing – Child Care and Parenting, Disaster Nursing Instructor and as AIDs Education Facilitator, presenting programs to various industries and educational groups. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter FI. She was a former Board member of Y.W.C.A., Carver Nursery and Joplin Woman’s Club.

She married Dr. Robert C. Cable on December 21, 1949 at Ottawa, IL. He survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Robert D. Cable of Brockwell, AR; two daughters, Belinda Pace and husband Dan of Brockwell, AR, Sally Fitzgerald of Mountain Home, AR; a brother, William Swanson of Ottawa; a sister, Teri Hoyt of New Lenox, IL; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Cindy Howard; two sisters, Virginia Stevenson and Jean Blase; and a brother, Delbert Swanson, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10:00 AM at First Christian Church with Dr. Jeff Snell, Rev. Fred Pugh and Bill Abernathy officiating, after which the body will be cremated. Dottie’s ashes will be preserved until the passing of her beloved husband at which time their ashes will be combined and interred at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church or Crossline Churches of Joplin.

Trixie McNeff-Vogt

Maureen P. “Trixie” McNeff-Vogt, 72, passed away May 27, 2014 in Freeman Hospital; Joplin, MO. Trixie was born February 13, 1942 in Middlesex, England to William George Bishop and Kathleen Constance “Goodwin” Bishop. Trixie was a resident of Carthage for the past 15 years moving from the Monett area. She was a retired manager of Casey’s General Store in Monett. 

Trixie is survived by Bill Vogt of Carthage, MO., two daughters Karen Peters of Wichita, KS. and Denita Douglas of Neosho, MO. and four sons Kevin Stocker of Aurora, MO, Chris Stocker Bradenton, FL , Mike Vogt of Joplin, MO and Mark Vogt of Carthage, MO, Eight grandchildren Annesha Umbarger, Dustin Packwood, Dalton Peters, Chelsah Douglas, Kevin Douglas, Jason Fisher, Ben Vogt and Adam Vogt, and 10 great grandchildren. 

Trixie is preceded by one brother Robert Bishop of Cambridge England.

Dorothy Schooley Taylor, 93, of Carthage, MO, passed away Monday, May 26, after a long illness.

She was born on August 10, 1920, in Pittsburg, KS, to the late Fay and Floyd Schooley. Dorothy graduated from Carl Junction High School and attended Joplin Business College. On June 8, 1941, she married Claude B. Taylor Jr. She was an avid bridge player, loved to travel and always enjoyed sharing a glass of wine with family and friends. 

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Fay and Floyd, her husband Claude, her sister Dorene Woods, an infant son Clayton and Son Bryan (Skip). Survivors include 3 daughters Marcia Ray of Rolla, MO, Betsy Taylor and partner Mary, Eureka Springs, AR, and Cindy Morrison and husband Gid of West Planes, MO; a daughter-in-law, Pam Loyd Taylor Borland and husband Gary of Carthage, MO; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Sybil Jean Church, age 85, formerly of Carl Junction, passed away Saturday,May 24, 2104 in Coeur d'Alene Idaho.

She was born July 1, 1928 in Carterville, Missouri to Ira and Ada (Vandergrift) Call. Sybil married Billy Gene Church April 28, 1944 she was a beloved Mother and homemaker and later owned and operated an Antique store in Catalina Arizona. Sybil and Bill lived in Kellogg, Idaho; Catalina, Arizona; Carl Junction, Missouri and finally Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. After her husband's death in 2004 Sybil volunteered for Hospice of North Idaho for 9 years.

Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Billy Gene Church, 3 brothers, a sister and a son George G. Church.

She is survived by a son David and wife Shelley Church of Bayview, Idaho; Granddaughters April Kahabka, Jennifer and Shane Torok, Stacy and Rick Mattis, Jennifer Williams and Dan Weeks, Marcy and Preston Jerome; Great Grandchildren: Blake, Loren and Alex Torok, Justin and Kaitlyn Kahabka, Kelsie and McKenzie Mattis, Nathen and Peyton Jerome.

Syble Stewart

Syble Stewart, age 94, of Joplin, passed away on Wednesday May 28, 2014, at her home.

Syble was born on November 02, 1919 in Galena, Mo., the daughter of the late Eli A. and Clara Mae (Ralston) Gunn. She has been a resident of Joplin for the past twelve years, moving from Ozark, Mo. Prior to that she lived in Modesto, Ca. for twenty-five years, where she worked as a switchboard operator for the Modesto Irrigation District. She married Billy Stewart in February of 1940. He was a pastor and Syble devoted much of her life working with him in the ministry and teaching numerous Sunday school classes. She was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church and she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class. She enjoyed word search puzzles.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Stewart and wife, Elizabeth, Webb City, Mo., and Lee Stewart and his wife Regina, Modesto, Ca.; one brother Walter T. Gunn and wife Rebecca, Springfield, Mo., six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren .She was preceded in death by her husband Billy D. Stewart and one brother, Leonard Gunn. 

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Spokane Cemetery in Spokane, Mo. Bill Rice will officiate. Friends may sign the register during regular visiting hours at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Donald Mossburg

Donald Ernest Mossburg, age 67 of Neosho, MO, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO.

Donald was born June 02, 1946 in Bluffton, IN to the late Ernest and Jean Lee Mossburg. Donald served in the United States Marine Corp, retiring as a Sergeant E-5. After serving as body guard to their chaplain in the military, he began his career in over-the-road trucking. He was an owner/operator and President of Mossburg Trucking, Inc., before retiring in July of 2010.

Donald is survived by Carol Connor Mossburg whom he married August 05, 2003, in Miami, OK. Additional survivors include one son, Jesse Mossburg and wife, Lori of Montana; step-daughters, Jackie Rounds and husband Doug of Pierre, SD, Christina Young, Iowa Park, TX; sister, Sharon Kyle of Tennessee, half-sister, Karen Ohning of Indiana, half-brother, Terry Fair and wife Mary of Hartford City, IN and 8 grandchildren.

Donald is preceded in death by one daughter, Nicole Mossburg Goetz; two sons, Donald E. Mossburg II, Donald E. Mossburg III.

Inurnment of ashes will take place at the Mossburg Family Cemetery in Wells County, Indiana at a later date. Donald’s special wish of taking a last ride in an 18 wheeler will be fulfilled by his longtime extended family/friend, Barry Stevens, of Ft. Wayne, IN.

Gerald D. Howard

Gerald D. Howard age 63 of Joplin passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

 He was born on June 19, 1950 in Joplin, Missouri to R. Warren Howard and Betty Mitchell Howard. Gerald was a salesman in the lumber business for many years, a Kansas City Chiefs fan, and adored all of his grandchildren. 

He married Teddy Evans on January 30, 1970 in Carterville, Missouri and she survives at the home. Gerald is also survived by his mother, Betty Howard of Joplin; sons, Shelby Howard and wife Lindsey of Joplin, Stacy Howard and wife Alanna of Joplin, Shawn Howard of Joplin; grandchildren, Jodie Howard, Aleah Howard, Carlie Howard, Brodie Howard, Dalton Howard; brother, Harold Howard of Wilson, Oklahoma.

Ann Shaver

Marjorie (Ann) Shaver, 78, Neosho, passed away at her home in Neosho on May 26, 2014. 

Ann was born October 10, 1935 in Sadler, TX to Milton and Ruth Short. Her family moved to Arkansas when she was young, her father was a rural Methodist minister, serving dozens of churches in North Arkansas. As a ten year old, she met her husband to be while her father was pastoring the church in Evening Shade, Arkansas. Ann graduated from high school in Mammoth Springs, AR and obtained her degree at Hendrix College in Conway, AR. She began her career teaching high school English in El Dorado, AR and later in Cassville, MO. In 1959, Ann married Roy Shaver and left teaching to raise her family. The Shavers moved to Neosho in 1968 and Ann returned to teaching in 1976 at East Newton High School, retiring in 1994. Ann was an active member of the Neosho United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and participated in United Methodist Women. She volunteered with the Freeman Health System Auxiliary, where she served as president and was honored as volunteer of the year. She enjoyed quilting as a member of the Crowder Soft Stitchers and the Grove Oklahoma Grand Lake Quilting Guild. She was a member of the Fortnightly Study Club and Chapter JO PEO Sisterhood. She was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook, and frequently hosted church and club groups in her home.

 Ann is survived by her husband, Roy Shaver and four children, Mike Shaver, Astoria, NY; Beth Shaver, Nashville, TN; Susan Shaver and husband, Scott Wiederholt, Atlanta, GA and Lisa Shaver, Waco, TX and two grandchildren, Lydia Ann and Eli Christopher Wiederholt. She is also survived by her sister, Evelyn Carter, West Palm Beach, FL and a beloved sister in law, Amy Shaver, Batesville, AR. Ann is preceded in death by her parents and older brother, Jack Short.

Geraldine Davidson

Geraldine G. Davidson, 88, Stella, died May 26, 2014 at Freeman West Hospital, following a short illness.

Geraldine was born May 22, 1926 in Joplin, MO, the daughter of Charles C. and Mildred (Eaton) Millard. She was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Midway School in 1944. Geraldine was a homemaker and after her children were grown, she graduated from Crowder College with an Associates of Arts degree. She was an avid writer and had published a novel, she wrote poetry, short stories and songs. She was an avid genealogist and she loved being a Grandma. Geraldine was a member of the Jones Chapel Church and had a love for children’s ministry and missions and was a member of the Ladies Auxillary. 

Geraldine married John Bruce Davidson on Jan. 17, 1948 at Monett, MO and he preceded her in death on July 12, 1999. She then married Tony Gene Woodrum on March 30, 2003 and he preceded her in death on April 3, 2004. Geraldine is survived by four children, Jerann Deardorff, Neosho; John Davidson and wife, Susan, Joplin; Wendy Linton and husband, Bill, Stark City, MO; Jill Greer and husband, Jan, Stark City, MO; twelve grandchildren, Jeff Wilson and wife, Poppy; Larry Deardorff; Tabetha Meadows and husband, Dana; Eric Linton, Ryan Linton, Jared Hopkins, Zachary Greek, Tehya Deardorff, Casey Wilson, Corey Persinger, Cody Persinger, Alisha Wilson and Kendra Wilson; twelve great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and a sister, Barbara June Oxendine, Joplin. Also surviving are three step children, Joyce Meredith and husband, Harold, Neosho; Gary Woodrum and wife, Evelyn, Pittsburg, KS and Angela Glunt and husband, Kevin, Lenexa, KS and four step grandchildren, Joshua Glunt, Andrew Glunt, Meghan Woodrum and Michael Woodrum. Geraldine is also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Davidson.

Sylvia Thurman

Sylvia N. Thurman, 81, Neosho, died May 27, 2014 at her home in Neosho, following a lengthy illness. 

Sylvia was born Feb. 23, 1933 in Harrisburg, AR and moved to Neosho in 1977. She had worked at Tyson Foods and was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, fishing and camping.

 Sylvia married Delmar Thurman on Aug. 13, 1956 and he survives. She is also survived by two sons, Bobby Thurman and wife, Kim and Ricky Thurman, all of Neosho; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a brother, Joe Johnson, Buckeye, AZ and a sister, Sharon Johnson, Granby, CO. She is preceded in death by a son, Wayne Thurman in November 1980.

Helen Carr

Helen I. (Selvey) Carr, age 97, of Lamar, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.

Helen was born December 8, 1916, at Lamar, one of the eleven children of Roy and Essie (McManis) Selvey. On March 13, 1938 at the Selvey family home, Helen married Herbert Harold Carr who preceded her in death February 21, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jim Carr in 1996; a grandson, Peter Carr in 2008; four brothers, Martin, Gene, Leland, and Bob Selvey, and a sister, Lorene Norwood.

Helen and Herb farmed in Barton County for 24 years, first in the Forest Grove community, then 15 miles south of Lamar in the Duval neighborhood, and the last 12 years on a farm 10 miles southeast of Jasper. After moving to Carthage in 1962, Helen began an 18 year career as a piece goods department manager and buyer for Belk-Simpson on the Carthage Square. Many will remember her daily KDMO radio broadcast of sewing tips and Belk’s promotion. KK Highway, just south of Lamar has been her home for the past 40 years. Helen was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lamar and she truly enjoyed the friendship and fellowship of her church family and many friends. She was an accomplished seamstress, a hospitable homemaker, and a natural care-giver throughout her life. Always active in her community, Helen volunteered at Good Samaritan, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, was a Pink Lady at Barton County Memorial Hospital, and a member of Atheneum, Sew & So Club, and 20th Century Club. She was the last surviving member of Lamar High School Class of 1935.

Survivors include three sons, Jon (Sheila) Carr, Carthage, Bob (Marti) Carr, Joplin, Scott (Lexa) Carr, Lenexa, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Amy (Joel) Beck, Jeff (Jennie) Carr, Tara (Jay) Pearson, Greg Carr, Erin Carr, Kristin Carr, and Ryan Carr; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Keith Selvey, Carl (Beverly) Selvey, Don (Thelma) Selvey, all of Lamar, and Ron (Donna) Selvey, Bolivar, Missouri; a sister, Louise Caruthers, Lamar; and a large extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28th at First Baptist Church of Lamar with Pastor Robb Hodson officiating. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Daniel Funeral Home.

Bob Arnold, age 64, of Lamar, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 29th at Lamar United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Dwain Brixey

Dwain G. Brixey, age 85 of Joplin, Mo., passed away May 24, 2014 at Freeman Health System following a short illness.

 He was born August 21, 1928 in Joplin, and was the son of David and Elisabeth Elliott Brixey. He attended Joplin Schools and served in the United States Marines from 1946 to 1947 and in the Navy Reserves in Korea from 1950 to 1951. He served on the Cruiser Juneau, CLAA 119, in the Sea of Japan. Dwain married Lois Mae “Dollie” Goswick on August 5, 1953. She preceded him in death on January 9, 1988. Dwain worked at Farmers Chemical Company in Joplin, Mo for 23 years and for Economic Security Company for 13 years retiring in 1992. He was a 45 year member of the Racine Baptist Church in Racine and volunteered in the Genealogy Room at the Joplin Public Library for a number of years. He was a long time member of Post 534 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and belonged to the John C. Cox Cemetery Project for 10 years.

 Dwain is survived by 1 brother Perry Brixey of Texas, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Douglas Dwain, 1 brother Melvin Brixey, 1 sister, Betty Kinney, and long time, friend Wanda Beets.

 Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Osborne Cemetery, Joplin, Mo.

Betty Magers

Betty (Elizabeth) Emily Magers went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 22 at her home near Joplin. She was 82. She was born on December 17, 1931 near Joplin to Ira and Lucile Davis.

She married Marvin Magers on June 14, 1953. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage until his passing on July 27, 2001. We know that they are joyfully together again!

Betty graduated from Joplin High School in 1950. She graduated from Joplin Junior College in 1952 with an Associate’s Degree in Business. She worked at the offices of Hercules Powder before her children were born. She worked in the office of Medical and Merchants Collection Company from 1974 to 1986. All who knew her adored Betty with her sweet, kind personality. She was a member of Iron Gates Christian Church. She was also a member of Women of Wall Street Investment Club.

Betty’s survivors include her son, Miles Magers of the home; daughters, Sarah Williams (Steve), Joplin, Marvena Clay (Tony), Carthage; sister, Iris Hayward, Eugene, Missouri; grandchildren, Beth Tressler (Joel), Austin Williams (Chelsea), Henry Williams, Miles Williams, Charles Williams, Ericka Lyons, Alex Clay, Evan Clay; great grandchildren, Lydia, Bodey, Paloma, Molly, Owen, Toby, Brittany, Taylor, Kaylee, Kelsey; and four great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Davis. Services are planned for Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Charles Stillman, Minister, will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Austin Williams, Henry Williams, Miles Williams and Charles Williams. Michael Williamson

Michael Shane Williamson, age 40, Saginaw, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at his residence after a sudden illness. Michael was born January 27, 1974 in Joplin and was a lifetime resident. He was a 1991 graduate of Webb City High School and worked as an engineer at the Joplin Holiday Inn. Michael had also worked as an HVAC tech for Midway Sheet Metal for several years.

Survivors include his mother, Karen Garren, Joplin; a son, Gavin Williamson, Joplin; two brothers, Jeffrey Sweeten, Edna, Kansas, Nicklaus Garren, Joplin; one sister, Chelsey Shofe, Joplin; his father, Paul Williamson, Florida; maternal grandmother, Thelma Legg, Indianapolis, Indiana; and several extended family members, including cousins; aunts; nieces and nephews. Memorial services are planned for Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Denny Carver will officiate. The family will receive friends following at the Joplin Holiday Inn.

Vi Green

Vi Green, 86, Joplin Missouri, passed away peacefully at 1:50 am Thursday, May 23, 2014 at her home after an illness of several months.

Vi was born November 10, 1927 in Stafford Kansas, the daughter of the late John and Ethel Meireis Kueck. She then lived her school years in Sylvia Kansas, graduating from Sylvia HS and then attending Sterling College.

Vi married her high school sweetheart, Emmett Green, on June 12, 1948. They moved to Lamar, Missouri in 1951 and then to Joplin in 1954 where they made their home. She was preceded in death by her beloved Emmett in 2002 and grandson Christopher in 2010.

She is survived by her 2 children Cathy St John with her husband Gregg of Cincinnati, Ohio, and her son Lyle with his wife Pam of Carl Junction, Mo. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Jeffrey St John with his wife Natasha of Mint Hill North Carolina, Courtney Mirabile with her husband Joey of Alpharetta Georgia, Sydney Vernon with her husband Philip of Joplin, and Mallory and Kirsty Green of Carl Junction; five great-grandchildren: Samuel and Lucius St John, Oliver Vernon and Benjamin and Lily Mirabile; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Green was a homemaker and an excellent cook who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and an active volunteer within the Joplin community. She was recognized as a distinguished volunteer with the Freeman Hospital, serving as Auxiliary President and in many other capacities for over 20 years.

Vi was a woman of great faith who showed her gentle spirit to all whose paths she crossed. Her life was a testimony to her Lord, and she truly embraced her role as servant, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand mother and friend. She was a role model and mentor to many. During her membership at Villa Heights Christian Church for over 60 years, she served in numerous ways including singing in the choir, helping with VBS and teaching toddlers as “Miss Vi”. In addition, her home also was always open to the youth group activities and to many Ozark Christian College students who passed thru Joplin. She was devoted to her family, willing at a moment’s notice to be of help in any way she could. But the apple of her eye was her grandchildren whom she truly treasured and who affectionately called her Nanny. She was actively involved in making sure that they all knew the importance of faith and the Creator who makes all things possible.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Villa Heights Christian Church.

Services will be held the following day on Friday, May 30, at 10:00 AM at the church with internment to follow at Ozark Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Villa Heights Christian Church or to a ministry of choice.

Jessie Ogle

Jessie Clarence (JC) Ogle, 74, a lifelong Southwest Missouri area resident, friend to many and servant to all, passed into his Lord’s presence on May 22, 2014.

Jessie was born to John Victor and Goldie (Patterson) Ogle on January 26, 1940, the third of their six boys. He was known for his steadfastness and service. Jessie’s work career included long stints as a laborer for Carthage Marble, a soldier, a carpenter, and a ranger at Frank Childress Cub Scout camp. He served his country in the 203rd Engineer’s battalion of the Missouri National Guard for over twenty years, retiring as an E6. Jessie served others by volunteering with Boy Scouts of America for over forty years. He served his faith his whole life in many leadership and ministry positions, including over forty years at the Union Chapel United Methodist Church of rural Carthage, and the last twenty two years at Countryside Church of Jasper County. 

Survivors include his wife Judith, two sons Kent Douglas (Sondra) Ogle and Kerry Dean (Deidra) Ogle both of Webb City, one daughter Tina (G.A.) Flesher of Carthage, and three brothers Virgil David (Donna) and Richard Wayne Ogle both of Carthage, and Noel Dennis (Rosetta) Ogle of Willow Springs. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jack Ogle of Joplin, Courtney Flesher of Arma, KS, Samantha Flesher of Carthage, Kyle (Alicia) Ogle of Nixa, and Kasey Ogle of Webb City. Jessie will also be missed and remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Jessie was preceded by his parents, two brothers Victor Eugene and Jackie Lee Ogle, and a daughter Kelli Lynne.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel, with a memorial service led by longtime friend Pastor Jim Manley. Barbara Manning

Barbara Louise Manning, age 74, Webb City, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at her home.

Barbara was born October 5, 1939 in Neosho, Missouri, daughter of the late Melvin and Katherine Duffield Haslip. She graduated from Commerce High School in Commerce, Oklahoma, and spent her life taking care of her family. She was a member of Frisco Church in Webb City. Barbara was a very loving person who devoted much time and energy organizing fund raisers for local charities, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by two brothers, Irley Haslip and Greg Haslip.

She married J.C. Manning on June 18, 1960 in Joplin, he survives at the home. Additional survivors include her three sons, Terry Manning and wife Peggy of Webb City, Marty Manning and wife Lisa also of Webb City, and Darren Manning of Joplin; sisters, Twyla Hunley and Sharon Crow both of Joplin; 10 grandchildren, Maddie, Zach, Ryan, Christian, Deagan, Destiny, Tisha, Justin, D.J., and Kenzie; seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Larry DeGonia officiating. Interment will follow in Hazel Green Cemetery, Boulder City, Missouri with family serving as pallbearers.

Junior Jones

Junior Lee Jones, 80, of Carthage, passed away at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Carthage Health and Rehab.

Junior was born on February 2, 1934 to Mark and Florence (Coady) Jones. He retired after 20 years from McCune Brooks Hospital where he did maintenance work. Junior was a member of the Bykota Church of Carthage. Junior served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Junior married Frances Hutchens on November 5, 1998 in Bullhead City, Arizona. She survives. Other survivors include a son Michael Beauchamp and wife Kim of Duquesne, two daughters Lisa South and husband Andy and Michelle Waisner and husband Steve both of Carthage, three brothers Bob Jones and wife Thelma, Richard Jones and wife Judy, and Art Ewing and wife Susan all of Carthage, five sisters Freda Beam and husband James, Wilma Jane Leal and husband Joe, both of Carthage, Rose Selves and husband Tim of Joplin, Mary Hood of Carterville, and Edith Baker of Carthage, and four grandchildren. Junior was preceded by his parents, one son David Jones, one brother Kenneth Jones, and one granddaughter.

Stanley Slifer Sr.

Stanley Leon Slifer, Sr., 88, of Spavinaw, OK, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 surrounded by his family.

Stanley was born December 12, 1925 to the late Wilmur and Margaret Osenbaugh Slifer in Easton, PA. Stanley enlisted in the United States Navy, serving for two years and then enlisting in the United States Army where he retired with more than 20 years of service to our country. Stanley owned a few business throughout his life, one of which was repairing motorcycles.

In February of 1959, he married Patricia Rodgers in West Minster, MA. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include two sons, Stanley L. Slifer, Jr. and wife Trish of Joplin, Harry E. Slifer of Spavinaw, OK; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Stanley is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Slifer.

A private burial of ashes will take place in West Virginia at a later time.

Carrol "Deanie" Skelton

Carrol Dean McClanahan Skelton was born June 25, 1947 in Joplin to Estell and Juanita McClanahan. Carrol passed away 6:30 a.m. on May 21, 2014 in her sleep and went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ.

She was a lifetime area resident. A graduate of Joplin High School in 1965, she married Alva Skelton, Jr. on November 6, 1970, and together had three children, Malynda Elwin and her husband Mike of Springdale, Arkansas, Douglas Skelton and his wife Denia of Joplin, and Kelli Owen and her husband Tom of Joplin.

She is a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Her working career lasted more than a decade for the Pillsbury Company of Joplin. In her retirement she enjoyed the crafts class at her church, shopping, and most of all being a very devoted and loving grandmother to her seven grandchildren who adored her.

She is survived by her husband, her children, and her grandchildren, Mackenzie, Maranda, Jackson, Jossatt, Matthew, Elizabeth, and Angie; her sisters, Norma Campbell and husband George, Karen Eubanks and husband John, and Patricia Smiley and her husband Lawrence all of Joplin, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Friday, May 23, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Youth Group, in care of Parker Mortuary.

Bobby Huffman

Bobby L. Huffman, age 74, Carthage, passed away at 8:02 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at his residence from a sudden illness.

Bobby was born January 27, 1940 in Joplin to the late Robert O. Huffman and Pansy G. Tyndall Huffman and had lived in the Joplin area all of his life.

Bobby worked at Allgeier-Martin and Associates for 40 years and retired as an electrical engineer. He then worked part time at Cakes By Diane in Diamond for several years.

Bobby attended the Missouri School for the Deaf, Fulton and was a faithful member of Crossroad Baptist Church, Carthage.

His family meant the world to him and he will be missed dearly.

He married Joan M. Black on November 22, 1963 in Joplin. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include his children, Angela Turnbeaugh, Oronogo, Tina Webb, Webb City, B.J. Huffman, Mason City, Iowa; siblings, Shirley Mailes, Joplin, Joann Laney, Gardner, Kansas, Ronald Huffman, California, Frank Huffman, Joplin; grandchildren, Kandis Elkins, Krista Moser, Kayte Cutler, Lacey Malcom, Lexi Webb, Libby Webb, Rowdy Webb, Ali Richardson, Jordan Richardson, Jade Richardson and one on the way, Baby Carriger; and great grandchildren, Braxdon Elkins, Brynleigh Elkins, Taegyn Malcom and Kason Moser.

Services are planned for Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Crossroad Baptist Church, Carthage. Rev. Bob Morgan will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Ronald Edens

Dennis Bradley Gallagher, age 71, Joplin, passed away at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at his home after an illness.

Dennis was born May 26, 1942 in Ophir, Utah to the late Reulon Reno Gallagher and Arline West Gallagher and had lived in Joplin since 1988.

He worked as a cutting room manager in the apparel industry and was associated with Pykettes Manufacturing for 25 years and King Louie International for 16 years. Dennis was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He married Glenna Poole on March 24, 1984 in Menan, Idaho. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include his children, Kira Gunter and her husband, Dave, West Valley, Utah, Shauna Brems, West Valley, Utah, Jason Gallagher, Murray, Utah, Melissa Harris and her husband, Michael, Clovis, New Mexico, Shane Gallagher and his wife, Alisha, Nanjing, China; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services are planned for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Dan Belnap will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Lt. Col. Raymond Vawter

Lt. Col. Raymond Macy Vawter, US Army, Ret., age 84 of Galena, KS, passed away at 2:25 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO after a sudden illness.

Born March 28, 1930 in Oakley, KS, he was the son of the late E.Y. and Mae Marecek Vawter and grew up in Garden City, KS, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He graduated from Kansas State University in January 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was also a member of the KSU men’s basketball team. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in The United States Regular Army. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1953-1973. He taught ROTC at the University of Iowa from 1956-1958 and received his Master’s Degree from Iowa State University in 1963. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam.

After retiring from the Army, he was a longtime resident of Frankfort, KS, Rock Springs, WY, and Bella Vista, AR. He was a member of the Masons, Lions Club and Rotary Club. He was an EMT for the Frankfort Volunteer Ambulance Service. At age 54, he went back to school at Garden City Community College and became a Registered Nurse. He worked as a nurse for 12 years. He was also a member of Our Savior Anglican Church, Joplin, MO.

On July 5, 1953 he married Peggy Joan Meyers. She preceded him in death September 25, 2013.

Survivors include a son, Jon Vawter and wife Angela of Overland Park, KS along with their son, Jackson; a daughter, Karen Fowler and husband Russell of Bella Vista, AR along with children, Macey Brake, Kyle Fowler and wife Margret, and Kristian Fowler Addison; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 27th from 6:00-7:00pm at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, MO. Memorial services will be Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00 am at Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista, AR. Graveside service with Military Honors will be Thursday, May 29th at 1:30pm at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.

Mildred Morgan

Mildred L. Morgan age 90, Collierville, TN formerly of Tulsa, OK, passed away May 18, 2014, following a brief illness.

 She was born November 9, 1923 in Gibbon, OK, to Floyd Hermon and Fairy Morgan Bledsoe. She married Lewis A. Morgan on November 27, 1946 in Wichita, KS. Mildred was a loving and creative full-time mother and homemaker to her husband and their three children. The family resided in Joplin, MO until the late 1950’s when Mr. Morgan was transferred to Memphis, TN by his profession. They remained in Memphis until 1971 when he was again transferred, this time to Tulsa, OK. The couple resided in Tulsa until Mr. Morgan’s death on July 8, 2004. After his death she moved to Collierville, TN to be near to her children. Throughout their lives, Mildred & Lewis were devout members of the United Methodist Church, their most recent membership being Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK. 

Mildred is survived by one son, Joe Morgan and wife Nelda of Union City, TN, two daughters, Denise Holliday and husband Steve of Collierville, TN, and Jana Blackwelder and husband Keith of Hernando, MS, six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, a brother, Floyd Dale Bledsoe. 

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Osborne Cemetery with Reverend Jarel Burnside Officiating. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK.

Emma ‘Lois’ Crawmer, 86, Neosho, died May 20, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, following an illness.

Lois was born July 17, 1927 in Stark City, MO, the daughter of Gus and Bertha Miracle. She was a lifelong area resident, a homemaker and a lifetime member of the Clear Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Lois and Ezra Crawmer were married on June 14, 1947 and he preceded her in death on October 28, 2009. 

She is survived by four children, Jim Crawmer and wife, Marcy, Neosho; Shelia Freund and husband, Scott, Neosho; Betty Waterbury and husband, Mike, Perryton, TX and Jan Allen, Springfield, MO; one sister, Erma Uto, Dufur, OR; nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather Crawmer, two sisters, Maxine Tracy and Lucille Tracy and a brother, Kenneth Miracle.

Margaret ( Meg) W. Johnson, 89, of Springfield died Monday, May 19, 2014 at Ozark Riverview Manor in Ozark, Mo. 

She was born August 7, 1924 in Chanute, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Olive Welch. Her twin sister, Lola Welch Manley, was her lifelong best friend. Meg graduated from Chanute High School in Chanute, Kansas where she met her husband of 55 years, Wayne D. Johnson. Meg worked part-time with Wayne in his architectural firm and also in real estate in Springfield. She enjoyed many years as an office manager at the Housing Authority in Joplin. Meg and Wayne traveled extensively, and she enjoyed many social activities, groups and friendships including her SMMA art group, a couple’s bridge club and they were one of the founding couples of Twin Oaks Country Club.

 Survivors include three sons, Stan and wife Debbie of Springfield, Rick and wife CJ of Lebanon, and Brian and wife Janice of Springfield; one daughter, Kim Keltner and husband Kurt of Rogersville. Eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Her sister, Lola Manley of Springfield and Lola’s children and grandchildren whom she enjoyed and visited often. Meg was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, her parents and one brother.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri. A remembrance of Meg’s life will be celebrated at the home of Kurt and Kim Keltner, Rogersville, Mo on Sunday, June 1 from 1-5 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

David L. Hutchison, age 41, of Webb City, Mo. passed away at 8:09 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2014 at his residence in Webb City, David was born October 24, 1972 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and had lived in the Webb City-Joplin area the last 20 years. David was a journeyman plumber and had formerly worked for Satterlee Plumbing Co. in Joplin.

David is survived by his three daughters, Olivia Hutchison, Webb City, Mo., Karlee Black, Tulsa, Okla., and Lauren Black, West Mineral, Ks., his Mother, Sandra Hutchison, Webb City, his Father, Bill Hutchison and wife Susan, Cookeville, Tn., two brothers, William Hutchison, and Shannon Frank, Charleston, S. Carolina, three sisters, Kimberly Anne Hutchison, Plano, Tx. Mary Piepmeier, Greensboro, N. Carolina, and Jennifer Frank, Portland, Ore.

Memorial Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home in Webb City followed by cremation. Dick Lowe

Richard Edward “Dick” Lowe, 83, of Joplin, MO passed away Thursday, May 15th, surrounded by his family.

Dick was born to Fred and Geneva Lowe of Joplin February 16,1931. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1949. Dick served his country in Korea, as part of the Army’s 7th Infantry Division. Following his two years of active service, Dick began working for AT&T. During his 38 year career, Dick and his family moved around the United States thirteen times. He retired from AT&T in 1989 and started his own consulting company, L.A.W. Consulting.

Dick married the love of his life, Jo Ann Vernon of Joplin, MO in 1955, and was happily married for 58 years. He was a devoted father to daughters Dy Ann and Jessica. Family was very important to Dick. After retiring from the consulting business, Dick moved back to Joplin, MO to be closer to his brothers and sister and was an active member of Forest Park Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and enjoyed working on the Church’s building expansion.

Dick was preceded in death by his siblings Robert Lowe (Louise), William Lowe and Patricia Patchin (Ed).

He is survived by his wife Jo Ann, daughters Dy Ann (Chuck) of Leawood, KS, Jessica Lowe of the home and his three grandchildren, Lauren Stilley, Sam Stilley and Le Ann (James Luce) . Also surviving is sister-in-law, Helen Lowe of Joplin, brother-in-law Gary Vernon (Sharon) of Joplin, brother-in-law Ron Vernon (Pat) of Mustang, OK and many nieces and nephews. Dick lived his life by loving God, his family and the church.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 21st, 11:00AM at Forest Park Baptist Church Chapel: 725 Highview Ave., Joplin, MO 64801.

Betty White

Betty Jane White, 88, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014 at her residence following an extended illness.

Betty was born December 07, 1925 to the late Charles and Edith Bliss Stowe in Bridge Port, CT. She was a homemaker most of her life, taking great care of her children and her husband.

She married Bill J. White on August 28, 1946 in Columbus, KS. They were very happily married for over 68 years together. Bill survives of the home.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Carol Matters and husband John of Joplin; three sons, Gary White and wife Debbie of Lee Summit, MO, Dan White and wife Gayle of Asbury, Dave White of Joplin; daughter-in-law, Kathy White; half-brother, Jammie Mass of CT; sister, Lita Ovesney of CT; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by one son, Jack White and a sister, Virginia Sears.

Private family service will be held at a later date.

Patricia Timmerman

Patricia Sue Murphy Timmerman, age 65 of Alba, MO, passed away at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014 at her home after a lengthy and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born December 29, 1948 in Kalispell, MT, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Isabell Olson Murphy and had lived in Alba the past 24 years, moving from California.

Patricia worked as a typesetter and bookkeeper for Circuit News and then as a teller for Citizen’s Bank (later Community Bank) in Carl Junction. She then worked at Vatterott College while attending college to obtain her credentials as a Pharmacy Technician. She worked as a Bagger and later as an Office Assistant for AJM Packaging until retiring due to ill health. Pat was truly a loving mother and her grandkids were the light and focus of her life.

Survivors include her children, Carin Timmerman of Alba, Bryon Timmerman of California, Katie Johnson and husband Jeremy of Webb City; five grandchildren, Teresa, Jeremiah, Kylee, Kaidon and Taylor; three siblings, Ann Shadwick, David Murphy and Heather Murphy-Ivey.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary. Cremation is under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Private inurnment will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.

Lois Campbell

Lois B. Campbell, age 83 of Joplin, MO passed away on Friday May 16, 2014 following a long illness.

Lois was born on April 22, 1931 in Joplin, the daughter of the late Wilmer and Veva (Drake) Lawson. She has been a lifetime area resident. She operated a licensed home daycare for many years. Most recently she worked with her sister, Lera Dill, at Magnolia House Gifts & Antiques before her health forced Lois to retire. Together the sisters sponsored a club for Belsnickle collectors. She was a member and Church Treasurer of Fairview Baptist Church. Lois loved quilt making and looked forward to displaying her quilts and vintage linens at Silver Dollar City every year at their Fall Festival. She also enjoyed crotcheting, gardening, collecting vintage linens and fabrics. Most importantly Lois loved her family.

 She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James Campbell, their daughter; Janis Powell her husband Tom of Joplin; their son Brad Campbell his wife Teresa of Libery, MO; five grandchildren; Brian Boucher, Adam Powell, Stacy DuPree, Chris Campbell, and Erin Campbell, six great-grandchildren, two sisters; Leta Sowersby and Lera Dill, both of Joplin. 

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday May 20, 2014 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Brother John Mitchell, officiating. Burial will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Harriet Hailey

Harriet Sarah Jordan Hailey, age 83 of Joplin, passed away at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center after a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born January 3, 1931 in Joplin, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Turner Jordan and lived in Joplin her lifetime. A dedicated homemaker and mother, She was lovingly known as “Nan” to her grandchildren. She was a member of Joplin Family Worship Center and particularly loved doing Street Ministry. Harriet always had warm hugs for everyone. She also enjoyed searching for things at garage sales.

On January 5, 1949 she married Raymond H. Hailey. He preceded her in death July 25, 2009. She was also preceded by a daughter, Carla Diane Hailey; a brother, Archie Jordan; two sisters, Earlene Lovell, Terry McKenzie; two grandchildren, Howard Leroy Garrett and Camie Diane Hailey; and one great-grandson, Jason Alexander Hailey.

Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Hailey, Tonya Judd and husband Shannon all of Joplin; a son, Raymond H. “Chip” Hailey, II and wife Linda of Joplin; two brothers, Albert Jordan of Battlecreek, MI, Roy Jordan of Joplin; six grandchildren, Jeff Garrett, R.D. Garrett, Stephanie Stapleton, Ray Hailey, Marcus Hailey and Tyler Hailey; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Parker Chapel with Pastor Gene Bebee officiating. Interment will follow at Saginaw Cemetery with grandchildren serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the mortuary.

Mary Simmons

Mary Louise Lindley Simmons, 92, of Carthage passed away at 10:40 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at her home. Mary was born April 12, 1922 in Carthage. She was the daughter of Ernest R. Bowen and Corda “Harrill” Bowen. Mary was a lifetime resident of Carthage and a homemaker. She graduated with the class of 1939 from Carthage High School. Mary was a lifelong member of Carthage First Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Mary was united in marriage to Nelson Lindley on October 27, 1945. He preceded her in death on October 23, 1998. Mary then married Robert Simmons on December 20, 2003 in Carthage, he survives.

Other survivors include one son; Richard Lindley and his wife Muriel of Carthage, two daughters; Carol Sheperd of Carl Junction and Patricia Jones of Tulsa, Oklahoma, five step-sons and one step-daughter; one brother, William R. Bowen of Fort Scott, Kansas and one sister, Virginia Ball of Carthage, 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by two sisters; Martha Ann Oldham and Nancy Sparks. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Carthage. Geneva Gilliam

Geneva V. Gilliam age 94 of Webb City passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Joplin Health & Rehab. 

She was born on December 1, 1919 in Mt. Vernon, Missouri to Harrison Choate and Leitha Gerieke Choate. Geneva was a seamstress for many years at Elders Factory. She married Thomas L. Gilliam on in 1948 in Bentonville, Arkansas and he preceded her in death on November 14, 2004.

 She is survived by a grandson, Thomas Holcomb and wife Renee of Webb City; granddaughter, Gina Bartley of Owasso, Oklahoma; 4 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Geneva has been taken for cremation and no services are planned at this time.

Dorothy J. Tandy age 74 passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at National Health Care in Joplin.

She was born on February 16, 1940, in Webb City to Donald (Don) E. Clemons and Ethel M. Barnes Clemons. She is a member of the Christ’s Church of Oronogo and a past member of the Webb City Christian Church. Dorothy worked at Elders Factory, Big Smith Factory and for Motorola in production.

She married William (Bill) A. Tandy on February 3, 1955, in Miami, Oklahoma and he survives. Dorothy is also survived by her son, Billy G. Tandy and wife Marilyn of Joplin; daughters, Cindy M. Hollingshead and husband Dan of Joplin, Connie Parmenter and husband Korde of St. Roberts, MO; son, Marty A. Tandy of Diamond; sister, Shirley Steverson of Webb City; brothers, Clarence (Eddie) Clemons and wife Connie of Prosperity, Donald Paul Clemons and wife Bessie of Prosperity, David L. Clemons and wife Judy of Chelsea, OK, Phillip E. Clemons and wife Jennifer of Broken Arrow, OK; 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Leonard E. Clemons. 

Funeral services will be held on Monday; May 19, 2014, at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City with Minister Ralph Shead officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

 He was an independent truck driver and served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1963. Harold was born April 4, 1937 in Riley, Kentucky to William and Naomi Withrow Leffew.

Louise Bushnell

Agnes “Louise” Bushnell, age 85, of Carl Junction, Mo. passed away at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Mercy Hospital Joplin.

 Louise was born January 21, 1929 in Lewis, Kansas. She attended St. Nicholas Grade School in Kinsley, Kansas, High School in Windhorst, Kansas, and Newman College in Wichita, Kansas. She lived in Parsons, Kansas for 27 years, and had lived in Carl Junction, Mo. for the last 26 years. Louise was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Webb City, Mo. and was a former member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parsons, Kansas. She served as Past President of the St. Mary’s Altar Society, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society. She enjoyed bowling and dancing. Her faith and her family were very important to her.

 Louise married Michael L. Bushnell October 18, 1952 in Dodge City, Kansas and he survives. Additional survivors include three sons, Patrick Mead and wife Tonja, Mooreland, Okla., Michael Bushnell Jr., Parsons, Ks., and Mitchell Bushnell and wife Pamela, Chanute, Ks., three daughters, Michelle Baldwin and husband Randy, Burlington, Ks. Christina Jameson and husband Ron, West Mineral, Ks. and Renee Pace and husband Mike, Pittsburg, Ks., 18 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, and 4 sisters.

 Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Webb City with Father Rahab Isidor as Celebrant. Rosary service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with visitation to follow. Interment of ashes will be at a later date at the Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Kansas. Jack Hyman

Jack W. Hyman, age 83, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

 Jack was born July 28, 1930 in Strong City, Oklahoma. He had lived in Joplin since 1982, moving here from Springfield, Mo. He and his wife established the Crown Video Stores in the Joplin area. He had previously worked as a Brick Mason Foreman and was involved in the construction of Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. Jack was involved in coaching his children’s sports activities and was an avid Oklahoma University Sooner fan. Jack was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Joplin. He was a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.

 Jack married Delores G. Stander November 26, 1949 in Oklahoma City, Okla. She preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 2006. Survivors include three sons, Michael Hyman, Carl Junction, Mo., Richard Hyman and wife Denise, Joplin, and John Hyman and wife Sheila, Joplin, two daughters, Marsha Arbaugh and husband Tony, Okla. City, Okla., and Debbie Hyman, Joplin, one brother, Cleve Hyman, Springfield, Mo., one sister, Laqueta Lindsey, State of Idaho, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, one of which is named after his Great Grandfather.

 Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Dr. Phillip McClendon officiating. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Betty Smart

Betty J. Smart, age 67, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 4:26 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 at her home following a sudden illness. 

Betty was born August 25, 1946 in Kansas City, Mo. to Jesse and Wanda Shanks. Betty lived in Joplin for most of her adult life. She was a graduate of Joplin High School and attended Joplin Jr. College. For the last 13 years Betty was associated with the Joplin Police Dept. and was the receptionist at the front desk for the last five years. She had previously worked 29 years for the Division of Family Services. Betty was a member of Our Father’s House Church in Joplin.

 Survivors include a daughter, Betty Petty and husband Levi, Joplin, Mo. a sister, Marlene Cogbill and husband Roger, Anderson, Mo., a brother, Randy Shanks and wife Dana, Noel, Mo. 9 nieces and 5 nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Melinda Shanks.

 Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mortuary. Pete Tatum

Walter M. ‘Pete’ Tatum, age 90, Carl Junction, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness.

Walter was born April 28, 1924 in Chelsea, Oklahoma to the late Bill Tatum and Mamie V. Church Tatum and had lived in Carl Junction for 30 years.

He was a local truck driver for 32 years, retiring from Frisco Transportation in 1984. He was a member of the Teamsters Union during his trucking tenure. Walter attended Carl Junction Church of the Nazarene. He was a wonderful husband; father and grandfather. He enjoyed working in his yard and helping others any chance he got. Walter was a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a daughter, Tresea; a brother, Fred Tatum; and sisters, Pauline Lewis and Lula Dawes.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Loretta, of the home; children, Mike Tatum and his wife, Susan, Joplin, Mark Tatum and his wife, Sandi, Carl Junction, Randy Tatum, Joplin, Tena LeMasters and her husband, Clint, Carl Junction, Kena Lakey and her husband, Louis, Joplin, Danny Tatum, Weir, Kansas; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Lizzie Dick; and a brother, Bill Tatum.

Services are planned for Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Harmony Heights Baptist Church. Rev. Charlie Burnett will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons International, in care of Harmony Heights Baptist Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Hospice for the care and compassion that they showed to Walter during his time with them.

Betty Carnes

Betty Jane Carnes, age 90, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Spring River Christian Village where she had been living for the last few years.

Betty was born June 14, 1923 in Stella, Missouri, daughter of the late Noble Jessee and Maude Carter Jessee. She graduated from Stella High School, and spent most of her life taking care of her family being a much loved wife, mother, and grandmother. Her smile lit up the room and her laughter was intoxicating. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. She also enjoyed being a delivery driver for the florist at Consumer's Grocery Store in Joplin and volunteered at American Rehabilitation Ministries. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Joplin.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Carnes who died on May 6, 1983, and an infant son, Robert Carnes, a daughter, Robin Carnes Hoagland; and three brothers, Vincel, Gene, and Max Jessee.

Survivors include her son, Kendall Carnes and wife Gayle of Joplin; a daughter, Cindy Layne and husband Randy of Webb City; grandchildren, Matt Hoagland, Maegan Spencer and husband Jess, Sara Shelton and husband Steve, Ashley Cook and husband Dave, Macy Layne, and a step-granddaughter, Robin Layne Cronin; great-grandchildren, Kendall Spencer, Brynn Cook, Kinlee Cook, Savannah Hoagland , Aliyah Hoagland and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and life -long friends whom she loved immeasurably.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Interment of her ashes will occur at a later date in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Neosho next to her beloved husband.

A. L. Bechtold Jr.

A. L. Bechhold, Jr. peacefully passed to the Lord on May 14, 2014, at the age of 91. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Wanda June Bechhold. Also surviving are sister, Doris Brock, of Missouri; son, Dennis Bechhold and his wife, Donna, of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Carol Robertson and her husband, Keith, of Monroe, La.; son, Craig Bechhold and his wife, Nancy, of Craig, Colo.; daughter, Teresa Hill, of San Antonio; and son, Kevin Bechhold. In addition to sons and daughters, A.L. had 10 grandchildren, Michelle Neber, Melissa Rust, Cynthia Hawkins, Alicia VanBuren, Bradley Robertson, Amie Wheeler, Kipp Bechhold, Lisa Bechhold, Kyle Bechhold, Courtney Cross; and many greatgrandchildren; and greatgreat- grandchildren.

Born on Feb. 18, 1923, A. L. was a long-time resident of the Joplin area. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was a deacon and treasurer for many years. During World War II he served in the Navy as a Torpedoman and an Investigator and performed shorepatrol duties. He was also a life-long member of the VFW. Following the war, he worked as a Ford mechanic in Joplin until his retirement. Some of A. L.'s interests included hunting, fishing, shooting skeet, playing his organ, riding his beloved horses Blondie and Mindy and in his younger years, pitching for a local softball team. Two of his most memorable trips were to Hawaii, where he and June had gone to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and to the World War II Memorial, which he visited with family members. In the latter months of his life, he enjoyed going out into the sunshine and strolling the grounds of the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home where he could eat the fresh, sweet pecans that had fallen from the trees.

Though A. L. will be dearly missed, he leaves his family memories of many special moments. He was devoted to his family.

Services are planned for Monday, May 19, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Parker Mortuary, Joplin. Pastor Phillip McClendon will be officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Parker Chapel on May 19.

Mike Howard

Charles Michael “Mike” Howard, age 75, of Joplin, passed away Tuesday May 13, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. 

Mike was born on January 10, 1939 in Joplin, the son of the late Charles and Louise (Scheurich) Howard. His mother passed away at a young age and he was raised by his father and step-mother Ruth Howard, in Kansas City, Mo. Mike attended high school on Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya while his father served in the Corp of Engineers. He returned to Joplin in the early 1960’s and attended Joplin Junior College. He met and married Susan Shapiro on March 13, 1963 in Kansas City, Mo. Together they raised three children. He worked as a sales manager for the Joplin Globe, Gus Shafer Ford, and Roper Pontiac. He retired in 2005. He attended the United Hebrew Congregation of Joplin. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Lion’s Club, the Tri-State Boat Club, Joplin Little League, and various Booster Clubs.

 Mike is survived by two sons, Greg Howard and wife Lisa, Joplin, and Joe Howard, Broken Arrow, Ok.; one daughter, Gwynn Caruthers, Carl Jct., Mo.; two sisters, Pat Payne, Kansas City, Mo., and Donna Church and husband Garry, Carl Jct., Mo.; and four grandchildren, Drew Caruthers, Alysha Howard, Ross Howard, and Annie Howard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Howard in 2006; and his dear aunt, Ruth “Fuf’ Teutsch. 

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Charlotte’s Angels, Amedisys Home Healthcare, and Hospice Compassus for the care given to Mike. Also, to numerous family and friends for stopping by to see him.

Janice Tanner

Janice Tanner, 76, Webb City was welcomed home by God after a lengthy illness on May 12, 2014. Born to Kenneth and Nathalee Smith on February 10, 1938 in Joplin, MO, she was a lifelong resident of the Joplin-Neosho area. Janice was a full-time mother who enjoyed collecting antiques and restoring old houses. She was employed at Fraley Funeral Supply for several years. 

Janice served her Lord as an active member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church for many years.
She was married to the love of her life, Drexal (Rex) Tanner for 55 years. He preceded her in death on Sept 14, 2009.

 
Janice is survived by two daughters, Linda Hayes (Kevin) of Webb City with whom she shared her home, Ellon Darr (Mike) of Joplin. Two sons, Stephen Tanner (Judy) of Joplin, and Tim Tanner of Houston, TX. Six Grandchildren, 8 Great-Grandchildren and one on the way. Two sisters, Edwina Cohen, Joplin, and Bonnie Grey, Drakesboro, KY. Several nieces and nephews and her faithful dog, Buddy. 

A memorial visitation will be held, Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 6:30 - 7:30 at Harmony Heights Baptist Church, 20th and Indiana, Joplin, MO A private family graveside will be held in Neosho IOOF Cemetery. The family would like to thank Oxford Hospice and Stacy and Shelly for their exceptional care to Janice.

Teresa Clark

Teresa Ann Gray Clark, age 53 of Joplin, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014 after a battle with cancer.

Teresa was born June 25, 1960 to Gary and Shelby Lively Clark in Kalamazoo, MI. Her father preceded her in death on December 31, 2013.

Teresa attended the Sperry, OK public schools. She was a Shop Manager for Travel Centers of America, and a member of Greenwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Shelby Clark of the home; son, Joshua Bundy and wife Kelly of Seville, OH; sister, Judy McCaslin and husband Leon of Neosho; brother, Jeff Clark and partner Bill Duncan of Broken Arrow, OK; aunts, Nancy Lee and husband Wayne of Huntsville, AR, Janice Lively of Golden, MO; uncle George Clark of Gentry, AR; grandchild, Brixon Bundy; step-grandchildren, Lezjon, Skyelar and Julian Mantz; several nieces and nephews and other extended family that will dearly miss her.

Services are planned for Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Parker Chapel. Public visitation will be Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 6-7pm in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Freeman Cancer Center in care of the mortuary.
