Walter M. ‘Pete’ Tatum, age 90, Carl Junction, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness.
Walter was born April 28, 1924 in Chelsea, Oklahoma to the late Bill Tatum and Mamie V. Church Tatum and had lived in Carl Junction for 30 years.
He was a local truck driver for 32 years, retiring from Frisco Transportation in 1984. He was a member of the Teamsters Union during his trucking tenure. Walter attended Carl Junction Church of the Nazarene. He was a wonderful husband; father and grandfather. He enjoyed working in his yard and helping others any chance he got. Walter was a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a daughter, Tresea; a brother, Fred Tatum; and sisters, Pauline Lewis and Lula Dawes.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Loretta, of the home; children, Mike Tatum and his wife, Susan, Joplin, Mark Tatum and his wife, Sandi, Carl Junction, Randy Tatum, Joplin, Tena LeMasters and her husband, Clint, Carl Junction, Kena Lakey and her husband, Louis, Joplin, Danny Tatum, Weir, Kansas; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Lizzie Dick; and a brother, Bill Tatum.
Services are planned for Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Harmony Heights Baptist Church. Rev. Charlie Burnett will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons International, in care of Harmony Heights Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Hospice for the care and compassion that they showed to Walter during his time with them.
