Charles Michael “Mike” Howard, age 75, of Joplin, passed away Tuesday May 13, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mike was born on January 10, 1939 in Joplin, the son of the late Charles and Louise (Scheurich) Howard. His mother passed away at a young age and he was raised by his father and step-mother Ruth Howard, in Kansas City, Mo. Mike attended high school on Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya while his father served in the Corp of Engineers. He returned to Joplin in the early 1960’s and attended Joplin Junior College. He met and married Susan Shapiro on March 13, 1963 in Kansas City, Mo. Together they raised three children. He worked as a sales manager for the Joplin Globe, Gus Shafer Ford, and Roper Pontiac. He retired in 2005. He attended the United Hebrew Congregation of Joplin. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Lion’s Club, the Tri-State Boat Club, Joplin Little League, and various Booster Clubs.
Mike is survived by two sons, Greg Howard and wife Lisa, Joplin, and Joe Howard, Broken Arrow, Ok.; one daughter, Gwynn Caruthers, Carl Jct., Mo.; two sisters, Pat Payne, Kansas City, Mo., and Donna Church and husband Garry, Carl Jct., Mo.; and four grandchildren, Drew Caruthers, Alysha Howard, Ross Howard, and Annie Howard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Howard in 2006; and his dear aunt, Ruth “Fuf’ Teutsch.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Charlotte’s Angels, Amedisys Home Healthcare, and Hospice Compassus for the care given to Mike. Also, to numerous family and friends for stopping by to see him.
