Peggy Mark

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Peggy Mark, 59, of Jay, OK, and formerly of Neosho, MO, passed away on August 23, 2023, due to complications from diabetes. Born in Carthage, MO, to Joyce Hawthorne and Harvey Brower, she leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that continues to inspire.

Peggy's journey included a connection to community and friends, educational pursuits, and working endeavors in the fields of customer service and sales—all marked by her incredible warmth, kindness, and empathy.

As a mother of four, her loving spirit shone brightest. She is survived by her daughters, Megan Daniels and Heather Barker, and she is rejoined with her sons, Dustin Allen Daniels and Dylan Lee Mark, in heaven.

While Peggy's earthly journey may have concluded, the lasting marks she left behind paint a portrait of devotion. Preceding her in the journey beyond were her brother, Michael Brower, her grandfather, Troy Peacher, her grandmother, Claudine Peacher, and her two sons. A symphony of memories and enduring love persists in the hearts of her surviving parents, Joyce Hawthorne and Harvey Brower, her two daughters, and a host of cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In honor of Peggy, a Celebration of Life Service will be held in November (Facebook invite to be shared at a later date), an occasion for those who knew her to share stories and reminisce on the many shades of her life.

Peggy's dual role as a devoted mother and cherished daughter remains etched in our hearts, a testament to her enduring love and the bonds she cultivated.

In remembrance, we share one of her many favorite songs:

My Wish - By Rascal Flatts

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to

Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small

You never need to carry more than you can hold

And while you're out there gettin' where you're gettin' to

I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too

Yeah, this is my wish (My wish for you)

This is my wish (My wish for you)

Hope you know somebody loves you (My wish for you)

May all your dreams come true (My wish for you)

May Peggy's memory continue to inspire us as we carry her legacy of love and wishes forward.

Tony Hernandez

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

In Loving Memory of
Anthony "Tony" Carl Hernandez
August 5, 1957 - August 27, 2023

Anthony "Tony" Carl Hernandez, age 66 achieved his ultimate goal by departing his earthly life to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Tony suffered a traumatic brain injury, with many twists and unexplainable events, he fought hard for 28 days surrounded by his wife, children and friends.

Tony beat the odds with Metastatic Melanoma and had been in remission over 11 months. He was born August 5, 1957 in Joplin, Missouri, the fourth of eight children and oldest son of Alta Carlene Wilder.

Tony grew up in Galena, Kansas being raised predominantly by his beloved grandmother Cleatus W. Collins. He always spoke highly of his grandmother, she was the first to tell him about Jesus and loved to take him fishing for Catfish on the banks of the Spring River.

In his late teen years his Mother married Wayne W. Justice and they moved to Neosho, Missouri where Tony graduated High School in 1975. Tony worked in his teenage years at Volkswagen, Joplin, Missouri as a parts manager then went to work for Dwyer Enterprises, Neosho, Missouri where he learned the trade of being a Machinist. He then went to work for Eagle Pitcher, Joplin, Missouri who sold to Mid-America Precision Products for most of his adult life.

Becoming a father again later in life he opened and ran Diamond-D-Trade, a resale shop on the corner of 7th and Newman Road in Joplin, Missouri. He then worked a few years for Protein Solutions of Joplin, a few years at Cott Beverage, Joplin then moved to Schreiber Foods of Carthage, Missouri where he took early retirement to focus on his fight against cancer. He made many dear and close friends in his working years.

Tony was an avid hunter and fisherman. He could shoot a bow like no other and enjoyed shooting instinctively. It was amazing to watch him bow fish. Tony was a member of the Cherokee Bow Hunting Club of Neosho, Missouri for many years where he enjoyed 3D target shooting. Tony was a gifted, self taught percussionist, learning to play on pots, pans, buckets, and actually anything he could tap on and get a rhythm. Tony was in a few bands growing up and played in many worship groups. He also played for his church, Calvary Church of the Nazarene of Joplin, Missouri before the opening of The Sheep Shed in Neosho, Missouri where he served faithfully until his injury. He was the drummer of the Black Sheep Band, worked with the youth and served as a Deacon during his many years at the Sheep Shed.

Tony struggled with alcoholism most of his life, and anyone reading this struggling with anything. Tony would want you to know that with Jesus you don't have to struggle. Once Tony was reborn 11/07/2004 he devoted his time to growing closer to God. He would spend a few hours a day learning the word of GOD, acting on it with his family life and of course practicing his speed on rudiments and paradiddles. Or quizzing his wife on what the drum he was playing was made of? Solid Maple, 3 rings - Maple, Poplar, Maple and the list goes on.

Tony proudly wore a shirt on the anniversary of his salvation day that said "My day of being REBORN in the blood of Jesus Christ" 11-07-04. He also had a 25 hive Avery he called Beano's Bees where he enjoyed the hobby of Beekeeping but more importantly enjoyed the honey.

He also enjoyed working on his hot rod El Camino, driving his Harley Davidson, watching baseball (Atlanta Braves), watching old westerns (Gunsmoke), eating meatloaf and cherry pie and feeding wildlife especially Deer & Cardinals. A master chief at making Deer Chili. He loved his fur-babies and all his Roosters. He enjoyed collecting drums, fishing lures, Native American artifacts and guns. Tony was 34% Native American which he was very proud of.

In one of his numerous notebooks laying around the house this was found among various notes of scripture and appointment dates. "I love my wife and my children with all my heart and soul. I can't make up for the past but I hope you all will forgive me someday.I think of you all everyday and I wish I could have loved you all as you deserved. Amanda, Kendra, Hannah I love you with my whole heart, never forget! Daddy, loves you! Sis, you and Mom have been my best friends. I love you! Natalie, you are the kindest hearted person I have ever known. I have always felt your love and I am sorry I did not always reciprocate it. Thank you for allowing me to be your husband. Thank you for always being there for me even when I did not deserve it. I have always said you're the BEST! When I die, I am not dead! I am with my father and I will be waiting eagerly for each of you!" Amen & All MY LOVE, Tony Hernandez October 10, 2021.

He signed and dated everything with elegant penmanship. He saved everything that had any sentimental value to him. Tony was not perfect; he was a product of his difficult and hard childhood mixed with environmental influence allowing him to show affection and love the only way he could. Those who took the time to know him, understood him. He actually had a huge heart.

Tony met Natalie in October of 1999 and they were united in Holy Matrimony, June 30, 2005. He had one previous marriage to Linda K. Simpson in which they shared two wonderful children. Tony will be greatly missed by his family, his church family, his friends, his community, and all his "babies" (his pets).

He was preceded in death by his mother, stepfather, grandmother and younger sister, Mary A. Hernandez.

Today Tony (Meme, Beano, Chick-o-stick) is survived by his wife, Natalie L. Davenport-Hernandez (Meme Little, Mom). Daughters: Amanda Nichole Hernandez (Nana), Kendra Kay Hernandez-Mynatt (Copper) and Hannah Marie Lee Davenport (Sis). Grandchildren: Kaylie, Skylar, Eliana,

James Kelso

(From Cullen Funeral Home)

Beloved teacher, musician, father, and friend, James Ross Kelso, 73, died peacefully at home in Belton, Mo., on August 15, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

James was born on July 5, 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to J D “Jack” and Helen Patton “Pat” Kelso. It was in his father’s plumbing shop that James learned the value of a strong work ethic and a good joke– two things he applied generously wherever he went. But it was his deep love of music that set his own life course.

James “Buster” Kelso played his first tenor sax gig in junior high, and knew from that young age that music was his calling. After graduating from Will Rogers High School, he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Tulsa on a full music scholarship, making lifelong memories and friends in bands such as Home Cookin’, Soul Section, and the TU Jazz Band.

As a music educator, James’s influence is still deeply felt in the Four-State area. After starting his teaching career in Eunice, New Mexico, James arrived in Neosho, Mo., in 1978, and spent the next 28 years inspiring generations of students to become both good musicians and good citizens, and developing Neosho’s jazz, concert, and marching bands into programs of distinction. He directed “The Pride of the Ozarks” Wildcat Marching Band, received numerous awards for his contributions to jazz education, and continued teaching in Chanute, Ks., until his full retirement in 2016.

To his students, Mr. Kelso was a remarkable leader and mentor who instilled in them not only a love of music but a sense of community, pride, and purpose. And to all people, he was an encourager and friend, offering anyone he met a kind word or a funny story with a twinkle in his eye. In his memory, he would hope that we all seek out the joy, beauty, and music in the world around us, and the deep humanity in each other.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Pat Kelso, and his sister, Sarajane Platten. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Berry, of Belton, Mo.; four beloved sons, Patrick Spencer Kelso (Caylene) of Oronogo, Mo., Gavin Ross Kelso (Mia) of Bedford, Tx., Kai Asher Kelso of Joplin, Mo., and Quinn Berry Kelso of Belton, Mo.; a treasured grandson, Brennan Ross Kelso, and a brother, John D. Kelso.

A public memorial service will be held at the Neosho High School Performing Arts Center in Neosho, Mo., on September 30, 2023, at 1:14pm.

Doug Mayes

(From Ozark Memorial Park Crematory)

Private Family Services will be held for Douglas Edward Mayes, 68, who died August 24, 2023, at Truman Healthcare and Rehab in Lamar, Missouri, after a battle with cancer.

Doug was born March 27, 1955, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Edmond (Eddie) Richard Mayes and Beatrice (Bea) Olivia Rives Mayes, both of whom preceded him in death as did his infant daughter, Heather Mayes.

Doug was raised in Kansas City, Kansas, attending Rosedale and Washington High Schools. While many thought he should be in school or working, he chose to go on adventures which included picking apples in Washington and hitchhiking. He followed his heart to travel and got to see lots of this great country. Some may have felt he had some crazy ideas, but in hindsight, he got to see and do things many just dream of doing. What a long, strange trip it’s been!

After his wanderlust waned, he ended up in Iantha, Missouri, where Mom had moved after Dad died. He married Venus Berry and they later divorced. To this union were born 4 children: Edmond E. (Zeke) Mayes, Zechariah Levi Mayes, Job David Mayes and Heather Mayes.

Doug worked for Cox Sawmill and Williams Sawmill and was a logger. He could play many instruments, the main one of which was the guitar. He wrote poems. He wrote music and songs that could bring you to tears and he had a voice that made you keep listening no matter what he was singing. He made jewelry, loved nature, fishing, rocks and hunting arrow heads.

Doug enjoyed eating out at El Caballos in Lamar, especially their Chile rellenos. He loved to read, especially the Bible which he knew, inside and out. Doug was saved at a young age and knew where he was going. Doug never knew a stranger. He had plenty of stories to tell anyone who would listen.

He would be the first to admit he had a substance abuse problem and would acknowledge most of his failures were due to his addictions. He had his moments when his demons got the best of him, but he was always remorseful and tried to be better the next day. Doug is survived by his 3 sons, Zeke, Levi and Job (Brandie) and his 3 grandchildren, Nadia, Zayn, and Jaden. Also, sisters Iris Walker (Butch), Mary Coon, Linda Richards, Debbie Nims (Walt), Carol Ummel (Jeff) and brother, Barry Mayes. He is also survived by his aunt, Jean Rives Foster, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was loved by many and will be missed.

The family would like to thank Truman Healthcare and Rehab and Compassus for the care they gave Doug.
