(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary)Mary Ann (Cignetti) Welch, age 92, of Joplin, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, surrounded by those she loved.
Mary was born on September 11, 1930, in Joplin to the late Albert and Alice (Emmert) Cignetti of Joplin. Mary graduated from Joplin High School with the Class of 1948.
She went on to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a long-distance operator. That same year she met the love of her life, John Welch.
After a wonderful courtship at the Joplin Green Top Roller Rink, they were united in marriage on August 17, 1949, in Bentonville. They had four children and 67 years of beautiful memories together before John passed away on October 23, 2016.
They were great skating partners and enjoyed dancing later in life and belonged to several dance clubs in the Joplin area. After retiring from Lowry’s Tri-State Office Equipment as a bookkeeper in 1996, she and John enjoyed traveling with friends and family. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who always gave of her time and heart. She will be missed by her family and those that knew her.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by one son, Tony; granddaughter, Rachael Welch; her brothers, Robert, Al, and Ronnie; and one sister, Carol Gaskill. Survivors include her sisters, Shirley LaPage, of Jefferson City, and Nancy Mayor, of Fort Worth; two sons, Mike Welch, of Joplin, and Pat Welch, and his wife, Brenda, of Halfway; her daughter, Susan Deubler, and her husband, John, of Carl Junction; four grandchildren, Jamey Smith, and wife, Kristi, of Joplin, Drew Crossland, of Houston, Spencer Welch, and wife, Amanda, of Bolivar, and Kaitlyn Wright, and husband, Brantley, of Webb City; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Tuesday, August 5th beginning at 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Mary and may be entrusted to the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin.
